And what I can't get away from is how absolutely full of shit he obviously is. Every single thing he says is some variant of hyperbole. And not just the usual campaign promise type hyperbole, but painfully obviously sometimes essentially impossible hyperbole.
Does Trump really want to win? Everything he does will be a series of failures to live up to anything and everything he's ever said.

I guess what I'm saying is that one would also have to be basically really stupid to support him, beyond all the belief systems he otherwise appeals to.

Well Bernie is polling better and better as we get closer to Iowa's caucus. He's nationally within 3 points of Clinton according to some polls.

Maybe he hinted at it with urging 'common sense' proposals but, eh, at least he touched on everything else he could possibly touch on in an hour. Well, Nikki Haley just gave the conservative response to the SOTU address. Nothing controversial or spiteful said. Pretty much what you would expect, dismissing Obama's promises, and a little unexpected, a bit of Republican shaming.

I don't agree with her on some things but she did good. Especially in comparison to previous responses.

Well right now the GOP is splitting under the weight of the hissy fit throwers (tea party) and the establishment. I doubt they will recover fully from this at a national level any time soon. If that trickles down to state levels the party will be in complete crisis and might actually split into two parties. A lot of this is manufactured but it's not without reason.

If the democratic party can't get together and elect someone who has consistently represented all the ideals and values they claim to hold dear then a similar split should occur and I would welcome it.

Four parties are better than two.

There's a lot I could say on this and some of it I've already said here but throwing a hissy fit isn't always a bad thing. The system needs to be shaken up if anything about it is going to change and the only way that will happen is if people, in large numbers, throw a fit basically.

More mainstream parties would be nice but it's not feasible in our current political system. The two parties are currently diametrically opposed, with most third parties existing on the fringes of the far left or far right. A multiparty system requires a climate with multiple vertices, but right now we're stuck in a one-dimensional spectrum of issues. Any effort to split either party alone would simply be handing elected offices to the opposition.
