MARCH??!! that's way to far to wait! also am I missing something, but why cant they say okama way? is this a toei mandated change? or are they just pronouncing it in some awkward way??
Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
-
-
Why? What were they saying?
They never said "Okama"-anything back in Alabasta. Bon Clay's attacks were "Crossdresser-kenpo" in the dub.
-
Why? What were they saying?
It's the same way it was in the simulcast; "Okama Way" and "Okama Kenpo" are "Oh Come My Way" and "Oh Come My Way Kenpo", but he still refers to himself and the people of Kamabakka (and probably the New Kamas, once we get to them) as "queers".
is this a toei mandated change?
Well since they had something different before but are now using this to be closer to the Viz version, I'm going to assume that's what it is.

Didn't Bon Clay start using "Okama" during Impel Down, though? (subbed version that is)
-
Correct, in the anime Impel Down is when Bon Clay started saying "Okama". I suppose that's the one other thing that bothered me about this set, Bon Clay saying "Oh come my way Kenpo", instead of "crossdresser kenpo" like he did in movie 8.

I really like the voices of the Impel Down characters. The vice warden is actually funny; he just annoyed me in the manga, so this is a welcome change.
Marathoned the first four episodes. So great to see buggy and mr. 3 again. Weird that buggy sounded off in the trailer- he sounds exactly the same as ever now.
This arc is just so fun- the only pacing problems I've noticed are the too often and lengthy Hancock fantasies.

I don't think I can agree with this more…it's no secret that for a lot of voices, for quite some some, I have been unhappy with to START. Most have grown on me. Granny Nyon is the only one I can confidently say will never grow on me. Hannyabal is good from the start, as was all the other Impel Down characters; ie, Magellan and Saldeath. I find myself not nearly as worried about what Ivankov will sound like when he shows up in the next set.

This has been great! Ever since Kyle Herbert's revisiting Cobra in the Boss Luffy episodes during Enies Lobby, I've been almost paranoid about long absence returning characters not sounding even close, as it was with Cobra (I had to actually check and see if it was the same person.) While I wasn't too worried about Mike doing Buggy again, Barry Yandell's Mr. 2 and Duncan Brannan as Mr. 3 were a concern, but they've done quite well.
-
Yeah- only complaint so far is Jinbei's initial scene, which doesn't sound at all like his other scenes.
-
I'm really confused, I've recently started to watch One Piece and I'm just wondering something… How many DVDs have been made by Funimation. I've seen online that the DVDs go up to Collection 14 but nothing after that, is there anything after that, or has the dub just not been made yet
-
Collection 14 ends at Episode 348. The Voyages contain half as many episodes as the Collections but are released more frequently. Latest Voyage release ends at 421.
-
so just to point out, the one piece treasure box collection set are on sale right now and are going for $49.99 which means you can get about 300 episodes for $150 right now.
-
Yeah, that's a really great deal on Amazon with the big Collection boxsets for 50 dollars each. If anyone missing certain volumes that's a great way to catch up.
-
Some quick links to the One Piece sales on Amazon, I may have to buy some of these…
One Piece Collection Box Sets for ~$50 each: http://amzn.to/1NGe0UV (one day only)
One Piece Voyage sets for as low as $18.99 each: http://amzn.to/1NGebzB
One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 for the PS4 for just $19.99: http://amzn.to/1NGeiv6
J-Stars Victory Versus for $19.99: http://amzn.to/1HQXg1k -
Also sales on Pirate Warriors 3 and J-Star VS. $20.00 each; I ended up buying the former, but still can't justify the latter.
This is a "Deal of the Day" sale, btw, which I assume means gone tomorrow.
-
Oh god these sales for the box sets are amazing. unfortunately I couldn't wait and bought them full price :/
-
I still got J-Stars cheaper last week during the PSN sale when it was 12 dollars.
-
i still think they should have waited until this summer to release pirate warriors 3 so it can have the true ending and Luffy new "power up". I also think funimation should start dubbing the One Piece games since most of the main people of the series have dubbed voices now.
-

Is that still going?

It'd be nice but it's not up to them unfortunately.
-
So I checked the sub and it does look like funi spoiled the reveal of luffy and ace having different fathers
But I guess it's not a big problem, im currently showing this to my younger sibling and I guess I can always just skip over it, or show the japanese version
UGHHH, this is honestly the biggest F*** up by the dub that I can remember, is there anything worse, it'd be like him name dropping gear 2 on the sea train IMO
-
Not a fan of how that was worded…It seems like they believed the original's intent was to directly spell it out instead of knowing Oda intentionally worded it that way on purpose so that it could conceivably make sense either way, but comes across as much more clear when you find out the truth.
-
Got my set and marathoned the entire first disc. I have to say that the dub turned out better than Amazon Lily this time around I feel. Unfortunately Momonga's still present and his voice still sucks, but hearing Buggy and Mr. 3 reprise their roles as well as Buggy's crew made up for that. And I'm giving a huge thumbs up to the voices of Hannybal and Maggelen. They also did the commentary and they're just as hilarious in real life. No issues with their voices at all. Even if Maggelen is crazy deep it seems to work for him and he nailed the comedy. I actually like Hannybal's dub voice a bit better than his Japanese voice. Dubbed Buggy and Mr. 3 sound just as good or even better than their original arcs, which is awesome.
The episodes' pacing actually weren't too bad (so far) for me, other than the interruption for the movie Little Easy Blue crap. Yup, I didn't watch the fourth episode yet but it's as shitty as I remember it, and even though I actually find opening 12's song a bit catchy, it's as jarring as ever seeing that OP for Impel Down. The plot for Little East Blue is weird to me, and I never even questioned back in the day why these people would pick these tiny little home villages of our Straw Hats out of all the islands in East Blue to represent on their little rock of an island. It makes no sense. Also, why the hell were they able to recognize Sanji right away with his wanted poster the way it is? So many inconsistencies, it's like the writers didn't even do their homework. As much as I like Strong World, it's a piss poor set of episodes to hype up Shiki. I'll say the dub voices of the Amigo Pirates are great though.
@Long:
Wow Funimation spoiling the plot twist from a future arc is almost a 4 kids level screw up
Hell the manga reads it as we both have the blood of a criminal in our veins
This went over my head watching it, even though I knew Ace's father isn't revealed until later, but that's a good point. It could have been worded better.
Seems like so many issues with the translation have happened lately, like with Nami's line before she was sent flying by Kuma. Did we get any confirmation of Mike returning yet for Marineford or is it just speculation?
-

Bandai Namco are usually the ones who hire a voice acting studio to provide an English dub. If you want to contact them, you'll have to do it via Twitter or Facebook.
I'm planning to start a Thunderclap to raise awareness to BN that the community wants English voice-overs this time around.

Thank you for this information because it is not fair that we get dubbed Naruto and Dragon Ball z games but not One Piece games since back during the Wii era, i know they are thinking it probably wouldn't be worth it but One Piece has more American dubbed fans now than it did back then. i have seen many people turned off by the One Piece being subbed games and not dubbed due to much need of reading, especially for the much younger audience .
-
I'm watching episode 423 and I hate how ace revealed they had two different fathers. that was the biggest twist when it was revealed on marineford:(
What did he say exactly?
-
@Zach:
What did he say exactly?
I posted it a couple pages back:
@midod:The dialogue goes like this:
“Our fathers..to hell with them!”
“We both got the blood of criminals flowing through our veins and that was the only gift those bastards ever gave us” -

My guess is that, if anything, there are contractual/legal issues keeping this from being done.
Also, regarding the whole Ace revealing different fathers….
I think we might be blowing this way out of proportion. The overwhelming majority of us on this thread have the foreknowledge of the truth of the matter. This is allowing us to be far more critical than if we didn't know. It's spoiling a bit, yes, but not as much as is being made out. If we take it from the perspective of someone who doesn't have any foreknowledge, the reaction is going to be "wow! So who is Ace's father then?" If anything, it's actually improving the suspense because of the curve ball being thrown. Most people will be under the assumption that they had the same father and likely won't have thought more of it, even when
! Dragon is revealed to be Luffy's father because they will still be under the same assumption. If he said who Ace's father really was then that would have been an issue. What's more is that Garp's defending of Ace's father would make people wonder even more, given that Ace indicates that his father was a criminal. If anything, I think it was excellent storytelling there, because mystery and questions are being created. Maybe not in the same way as the Japanese text, but still well done. Only most of us can't see it because of that foreknowledge.
-
Funimation didn't spoil anything, Luffy and Ace don't even share the same last name, so it was always implied that they have the same mother, rather than father
! of course, they don;t have the same mother either, as far as we know:ninja:
-
Okay, I REALLY think Joel and co knew how much fans hated the Little East Blue arc. Tell me I'm not the only one who noticed the extra hammy lines, as if they decided to try to have fun with it for the hell of it. There's a few lines that borderline broke the fourth wall like Zoro's "Wait for it" before his attack.
-
Little East Blue contains the best terrible filler OP characters ever conceived: The Amigo Pirates! They essentially crystallize the sort of creative bankruptcy of much of Toei's filler in a single pirate group (or perhaps one whole filler arc).
That may be the dub I look most forward to, if only because they remind me of an old western I saw way back when where the one token Mexican character was named simply "Amigo" who stole the show in a stunningly bad performance ("The name is Ameego. It means friend!!").

Technically he says "he took his mothers name because of the debt he owes her " in the anime sub / mangastream so although that could have been a thought earlier, this teased the possibility of them having the same father and being full brothers instead of possibly half, both have the "blood of a criminal in our veins", so people were kind of hyped for dragon, especially when it was revealed that
! Ivankov was one of dragon's best men and thought there's no way dragon would just let a son of his die and this makes it " who's ace's father kind of thing " and tbh that the name of the father was
! Gol D. Roger wasnt that hard of a guess if you know he had a different father than luffy. It changes the reveal in a later arc from being " What the hell, that's crazy, cant believe he's related to him " to " oh so that's who he's related too. neat * turns newspaper* "

What do people here think about Doffy's english V.A.?
-
What do people here think about Doffy's english V.A.?
Some people say it's not deep enough or something(compared to the Japanese actor) but I think it fits the character perfectly.
-
Doflamingo's va is perfect for the character, since it's the same actor that voice Sensui on Yu Yu Hakusho, but Doflamingo he is more calm and relaxed.
-
I think the voice is perfect and I think I like it better then the japan voice actor. Don't get me wrong, the japan voice actor does a fantastic job, I just think the sound of the english voice fits better. God just thinking about it makes me wish that we could get to dressrosa in the dub faster now.
-
I thought Doflamingo's voice was fine originally, but now I think its more fitting after reading through Dressrosa and getting a better sense of his character.
-
Can someone link me the video where doffy is controlling those two VA's, I dont think he talk's until later, I'm not sure if he's already mentioned the
! auction house talk with disco or if that's brought up later
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also did they replace crocodile
John Wasey who did the voice in 2007 doesnt have one piece listed under 2015 work
If they did replace him, how good / close to the original is the replacement

The guy has returned to play Crocodile quite a few times already, all be it in very minor ways. For example he played Crocodile during Robin's flashback in 2013.

Doflamingo in the Japanese version actually went through a bit of transformation if you look up Japanese older episodes. In his introduction scene (what, like 10-15 years ago or something?) his voice also sounds way less deep, and got increasingly deeper over time. So I think we can expect to see the English VA reflect that change, especially during Marineford and even moreso after the timeskip when we see how ferocious and psychotic he really is. I love the original voice so the English voice can't replace that for me, but I think he brings his own style to the character that still fits. I don't expect him to sound quite as deep, but I do expect him to bring the same ferocity to his character later down the road. I'd also really like him to try to channel the seiyuu's laugh better. Because the Japanese laugh so far is way superior. Hopefully he'll get used to it as he gets more used to the role and has time to flesh things out more.
EDIT: Finished watching the current set and I gotta say that it's really been great hearing Buggy, Mr. 2, and Mr. 3 in the dub again after all this time (not counting side specials). Saldeath and Sadie also sound great. Joel really stepped things up for Impel Down, so I give him a lot of credit there. Also, major LOL at Minotauros (who strangely keeps the Japanese pronunciation of Minotaur) being played by Seitz and especially the Sphix being played by Tatum. Glad they brought Tatum back, even if it was for a role like this. I'd still like him to play another side character with a bit more importance but I guess he can't change his voice up that much to pull off more than three roles in the series, two being important characters.
I saw others noticed Jinbei's up and down in tone in the dub. It was a bit jarring but I think this was done intentionally to pay homage to Jinbei's late first actor who passed away shortly after taking up the role. So I can overlook that because I think that's cool, and it actually does give some sort of homage to the Japanese track.
The set overall was great and I really didn't have any issues with the pacing for these episodes other than the Little East Blue stuff, which also got me to rewatch Strong World and re-experience Shiki's excellent dub performance. So glad to see the next set is out in January. Time to preorder it.
-
I'm really ticked off at how spoilerific the new theme song is. Started watching the filler episodes with my girlfriend and now she knows all of the people we'll see return in Impel down and marineford, and that they'll all be going there after impel down.
-
Yeah, it's like a Fairy Tail opening
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Did you guys watch the second commentary? They pretty much confirmed that Mike will likely take over the second half of Impel Down when they were talking about how both Joel and Mike hit on different parts of her personality.

Skip the theme songs and sometimes the episode titles, the anime is annoying in that sense

The VA of Sadie mentioned that her performance was a bit different between both directors.
