I think CDs go wherever they want. The threat of an admiral is same for everyone, whether they are part of WG or not. And they always travel with their private guards who aren't much to the likes of seasoned pirates, but are probably more than enough to take care of normal people.

As for your second question, I suspect Dofla carelessly revealed their identity in the town, while talking about slaves and shit.

Every translation I've read has something different about Law's words on Water. I'm interested in what Aohige has to say about the name but here's a take on it from a translator on the ol' tumblr.

So the translations going around online wrote that the “Watel” in Law’s name comes from his mother, and so I did a small check on google to look for some raw scans to confirm that. Here’s the original words from the raw:
Ｄは隠し名、ワーテルは忌み名"D wa kakushina, waateru wa imina"
隠し名 or “kakushina” means secret name, so the part about “D” being a secret was alright.
忌み名 or “imina”, on the other hand, has multiple meanings. The one which I feel makes most sense, is that an “imina” is a “religious name”, that can be used to describe a new name given to a person who, let’s say, has gone through Baptism. I felt that this fits with Law’s scenario because in his flashback, there was a nun back in Frevance/White City whom he calls “sister”, which seems to imply that a religion similar to Christianity exists in the White City. Therefore, it is not a stretch to think that the people from there held practices such as baptism.
So following that, I think that Watel is Law’s own baptism name, instead of his mother’s name as was provided in the manga translations. I’ve done some research and have turned up nothing on “imina” having anything to do with a mother’s name, or coming from the maternal side of the family etc.

A lot of speculation going around on the importance and focus of Law this arc. It isn't that Oda is paying more attention than he should on him, he needs too thoroughly go through his past. As he should. Not to mention we have another 9 Supernovas who were thrust into the spot light at the same time over 6 years ago who STILL haven't been all that developed and who we probably won't see a full development of all of them as is. This has heavy foreshadowing towards the NW alliance that Luffy is building. Law is just more important than the rest right now. Plus he's a D. Stay alive Trafalgar.

Well, I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but wrt the cover story, as far as I remember, the only (known) DF capable of causing the Cat's home to end up on top of the City is the Whitebeard/Blackbeard one.. :ninja:

The W.G. allows slavery if the slaves aren't from a country of the W.G.. Not sure when it was stated. Probably at the human auction house or during Jinbe's flashback.

Remember what one really big knockup stream did to Jaya; it knocked an entire portion of the island up to the Whitewhite sea.
Then there is that whitestrom thing the SHs encountered when they left FI.
It's likely neither of those but something new.

Well this chapter definitely had me intrigued and wonderfully surprised. I had thought this was Law's flashback so I didn't expect to see into Doflamingo's dreams, but I guess since they're both fighting each other in the present that it's a shared one.

Corazon tells law to get away from Doflamingo specifically because of this, so I'll await theories on this or if we're lucky, Oda will reveal what Corazon is talking about in the upcoming chapters. Ok i'll try to explain, "忌み名" (the two kanjis are 忌(-む) which means taboo or to avoid in this case and 名 which means name) which we pronounce "いみな/imina" same as "諱" which means "true name"..

So here we go, Waterloo in japanese kana is written as this ワーテルロー, Law in japanese kana is writen ロー (RO-), so if you read onepiece in japanese it makes much more sense in this case.

So his real name IMO would be Trafalgar D. Waterloo. Where "Law" and "Loo" has the same spelling. So Law is derived from Waterloo/Watelaw or whatever… he clearly got it from Waterloo.

Are you japanese? I get the reference and stuff, but still dont get the 忌み名 meaning. Trafalgar D. Waterloo doesnt make sense since Law himself splits the "Water" when he speaks about it.

Fantastic chapter.

I preferred the what things looked like initially, with Dofla only being a self-obsessed monster, but that was a tragic, strong flashback. Homing was naive, but it's not his fault. It's the villagers' for taking it out on 2 kids and a man who renounced his title.

All the parts with the Donquixote Pirates were nice, there were so many funny background events. Corazon falling in practically all of them, lol.

Trafalgar D. Waters Law PLOT TWIST!! That was awesome and totally unexpected. I think this confirms that Corazon is only tough on kids to get them to leave because he doesn't want to growing up as Dofla's lackeys.

Another possibility is that he's 1/4 fishman - Chimney was 1/4 mermaid and had exceptional swimming abilities, maybe Dellinger is the same, but inherits a fin and horns while staying mostly human.

He could even have been abandoned because of this before Doffy took him in, to mould him as part of the family.

I do not trust Mangastream's "taboo" translation at all.
The page before that they translated the line about the white spots on Law increasing as Baby 5 saying that she's having a lot of fun.

Ok, reading the manga I assumed that basically the people with a D in their name want freedom, mostly for themselves (like BB) and/or for other people (like Dragon). What is Laws goal? He is as opportunistic as BB, but only for revenge? His intentions doesn't really fit the pattern right know. And that was a really comfortable pattern, especially for theories. Laws goals now appear tiny and immature atm compared to the goals of the other Ds (yes, Luffy included). Even his past is no excuse. The past of the other Ds wern't that good either.

I think Oda justified it. "Tenryuubito killed and slaved our children so it's fair for us to do the same". The fact that he renounced doesn't erase all the suffer they provoked, unfortunately (it is stated by the behavior of the little-psyco-dofla) . I still wonder how the gossip about a celestial dragon family living there was spread…

I don't have the details about it, but according to Aohige they were meant to show up in the new world but due to lack of lets say fun, his editor suggested to change the thematic of the arc and he came up with what we saw during that arc, but everything was already planned.

Well I wouldn't feel either way if it was a mistranslation, and certainly not surprised since there's never been any mention of it in the past (as far as I'm aware) while Oda loves to foreshadow things and drop hints… Still, fingers crossed we get more info on 'D' next chapter.

This freedom thing you're talking about isn't a pattern.
Portgas D. Rouge and Ace didn't spend their liives fighting for freedom. Garp either. I don't even recall BB saying anything about this.

We don't even have a backstory for the majority of the D's.

If you wanna get technical, Blackbeard has shown differences from the other D's. He was afraid of death and he wasn't smiling when he thought he was going to die.

It certainly makes sense that way. The closest they came to affecting the actual plot in Shabondy was Bonney stopping Zoro from attacking the CD before Luffy did in the auction house. I got the feeling from Law's first appearance in PH that he was supposed to be introduced there, based on the crew treating the various parts of Kinemon in a way that suggested we weren't supposed to know how Law's fruit worked yet.

The only thing I'm wondering with that theory is how Luffy was supposed to escape/recover from Marineford without Law.

Because they're not like people in this chapter whose hold such grudge against Tenryuubitos. I don't see any practically efficient reasons to attack them considering the risk. Someone might be able to overpower admirals, but that doesn't mean that it's going to happen without taking any losses and risk would still be considerable regardless if they're stronger or not.

They don't have to hold a grudge, knowing what the Celestial Dragons actively do, and represent is enough of a reason to attack them for those that care. As far as risk, they don't have to overpower an admiral, they simply have to be able to run away from them, the top tier crews of the new world seem to be actively pursued by admirals or those near their level or strength anyway, so it shouldn't be anything different for them. Attacking a CD would simply mean they have done something to momentarily draw the focus of the Marines on them, but that's what being a pirate is about right? (at least part of it)

IIRC, they weren't supposed to appear either, but Oda's editors wanted to spice things up so instead of introducing them later in the NW, he sketched all 9 of them in three hours and put them in the SA arc.

His Jolly Roger is a crossed out smiley face. I don't think it's an eye patch. Rather has something to do with tthe D's. Just look at Law's Jolly Roger. It's the exact opposite.

He has the string fruit so he probably holds a patch over his eye at all times with his pretty much invisible string. Oda pretty much set Doffy up in this chapter for a Doffy eyepatch reveal soon.
