Togashi alredy transcended humanity, years are like hours for him when playing DQIX.
Hunter x Hunter II

He is so transcendent that he also accomplishes in years of DQIX that which we could in hours.

Anybody know how many assistansts Oda has at the moment?
Yep.
The SBS answer is outdated.
And mangaka definitely pay the assistants' salaries. There is confusion as to who pays how much but for (wildly) successful mangaka, it can be a comfortable position.

Out of curiosity, since I know you know a lot about this stuff, I wanted to ask. From where this practice cames from? Because, being honest here, it seems a little unwise. Mostly because it rewards people that put less effort into artwork of their manga.
While I don't know how many assistants Oda has at the moment, I can guess that he probably has more of them then Togashi. If, because again I do not know the numbers, but if Togashi gets the same amout of payment for page as Oda, it seems incredibly unfair to Oda, because not only Togashi would get the same amount of money for the work that simply looks worse, he would also made more money of it, because of lack of assistants.
I know love for what you do is practicaly prerequisit while working on any form of art, but it still seems unfair.
P.S.
How many assistants Oda has at the moment? If, of course, you can share that info. I always did like trivia.
-
^ Oda probably has a ton more money flowing in than Togashi does, right? So I wouldn't say they make the same amount or that it's unfair.

Well, Togashi may didn't have much success as Oda, but he still has lots of money from HxH and YYH. Plus, his wife also has big franchise, so I think this can make even with Oda (I think).
-
The pay per chapter is quite small. The artists make most of their money from 1) volume sales royalties, and 2) merchandising. So Togashi not producing any new volumes and not keeping HxH fresh and viable for ongoing anime series, video games, etc. means that he is NOT making anywhere NEAR as much as Oda is.
There is a scale for by-chapter pay so that Oda probably still makes a lot more than a new artist every week, but it's still a very small percentage of where the money is.
-
Togashi doesn't have assistants. Hence Happy Scribble Fun Time. In your twenties it is remarkably difficult to produce full manuscripts by yourself.
But it's possible.
As of today Oda is 40 and there's no way he could produce a manga of that caliber by himself weekly while still being a father and husband, hence assistants.
As for if the practice is fair or not, I imagine that depends on the quality of the work they produce. If it's garbage but the author doesn't care because it sells, there's something wrong. But if a reader can't tell what an assistant has done and what the author has done, that's respectable and a sure sign of solid teamwork.

I don't think there are a lot of people in Japan that could compete with Oda's yearly take.

Oh, that's nice. You know, it's nice to know that system actually works sometimes.
And that there are still people that care enough. Because honestly, I checked some of the last HxH chapters and amount of emptiness in most panels really saddens me.
And with that optimism we go into 2014!

Well, Oda did invest a lot (time, health).
-
Just a testament to the level of quality of Team Oda, even I couldn't correctly pick out what assistants did and Oda did until I was told. I think we all know he does things that move but beyond that it's very difficult to tell who is responsible for what unless you actually know.
-
Oh yes. The amount of detail in backgrounds has been exquisite, especially in Dressrosa. Especially when compared to most of other shonens at the moment. And it's all high quality stuff. The fact that it stays consistently good is even more impressive.

Do you actually get to see? It'd be great if we could get some insider info on that.

When's the next episode coming out again?

It's only a week, but the anime is taking a Togashi.

You mean during New Years? Japan's biggest holiday? Well I never.
-

Lolz! Maybe to give the fans a chance to celebrate the New Year. This is not the first time though that the anime has a week of no new episode but I think it only happened around 3 or 4 times including this week.

I sometimes wonder if we will ever know the truth about Togashi? Genious in sickness or just Dragon Quest level 100 in over 80% of the classess?
-
Yep.

Yeah, kind of suspected that since the answer is from vol 5 or 6 if i remember correctly. I also remember an interview with Oda´s assistants at one point in which, among other things, they talk about the introduction of the Supernova. Are the assistants still the same and how many does Oda have now?

It would be interesting to know how often contracts are renewed and renogiated, especially regarding the amount of payment per page and of course the royalties for volumes and merchandising.
Iirc, there was a show in Japan in which they broke down Oda´s salary, the difference of that and a newcomer in Jump would be interesting.Edit:
! The One Piece Podcast
Interesting program on TV attempted to break down Oda’s salary. They admit it’s NOT 100% concrete but they attempted to be as accurate as possible. They brought in three guests to help deal with the calculations, all of them big-time former… editors:
! Nobuhiko Horie- Former editor of City Hunter and former editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen JUMP
! Pak Chon-Hyong- Former editor of GTO @ Shonen Magazine
! Ryunosuke Ito- Former editor of Psychometrer Eiji @ Young Magazine
! First they looked at the fields authors get their money from:
(keep in mind these values are ROUGHLY in dollars)
! -Original Work
They suggested a manga author typically can make $100 per page and can move up from there with experience. Two of the panel suggested Oda is currently paid $500 per page, the other suggested $300. They went with $500. and decided to calculate 500 by 20 pages by 48 chapters per year. This works out to roughly $480,000
! (If I was doing it I probably would have calculated at 19 pages given Oda’s current work.)
! -Printing Tax
! This is the figure for tanks. Authors receive approximately 10% of sales. That roughly $4.20 times 32,340,000 tanks sold last year (!!!) times 10%. Roughly $13,582,800.
! @_@
! -Use of Properties
! This is for the anime and movie(s) whenever they’re aired or shown. The author is estimated to get about $3,000 per episode $10,000 per movie. With 50 anime episodes per year and one film that’s $160,000
! -Foreign Use
! Basically what he gets from overseas sales. They estimate it at $2,000,000.
! -Use of Characters
! Essentially what he receives for the use of characters for merchandise and DVD sales. They estimated $15,000,000.
! Add it all up?
! $31,222,800 -

It's not really my place to say but the series has grown more and more complex so…
I sometimes wonder if we will ever know the truth about Togashi? Genious in sickness or just Dragon Quest level 100 in over 80% of the classess?
He's not sick. He just suffers from a violent allergic reaction to work.

You know, I really envy you. And at the same time I really don't. You must have so many cool, interesting informations and stories… that you can never tell anybody.
It's like one of the old european fairy tails.
He's not sick. He just suffers from a violent allergic reaction to work.
One does wonder why doesn't he simply end the series if working on it is a such chore for him…

Maybe he wanted chapter 339 to be the ending, but his editor has OCD and wants to hype fans for something that will never happen.
Also, now I'm watching earlier episodes of the anime. I only started watching at the CA arc, and I generally prefer manga to anime.
-

Yeah, admittedly I do. I can talk about them with industry people though so it's cool.
-

Super. Can we get this engraved and memorialized so that there will be no further debates on the subject? Please?
-

$$$$. Because he can crank out 10 chapters of scribbles at a time and get page rates and a tank's sales for that. Even with all the breaks new HxH volumes still sell quite well, well over a million per volume. Of course, between his previous volumes YuYu Hakusho, and Sailor Moon wife, he really doesn't actually need money.
And he might have some interest in telling his story still, just… no enthusiasm to put in the actual work.
-
Yeah, admittedly I do. I can talk about them with industry people though so it's cool.
I know the feeling!
I live with someone who works in the video game industry (and on very rare occasions I collaborate), and I get to see some really cool shit I absolutely can't talk about.
But I don't have the coolio people in the biz to talk about like you.

You totally got to play on a new unannounced SEGA console.

You mean… THAT unannounced Sega console? Oh boy, hype.

It's a pain in the ass. There's some stuff I can't even send my parents just because it absolutely cannot reach the net.

Thanks for the answers Greg. I hope this year you keep getting to go to cool events and stuff.

Why is the manga biz so secretive?

Its not so much "secrets" as much as it is "ordinary people having their own lives." You want to hang out and be normal and be able to hang with your friends without every tidbit transmitted to the world. Privacy. Its a thing most people want.

Hmm, I dunno. I mean, I get this, but if I would compare, say, fantasy literature industry in poland, where I live, and manga industry, the latter is way more secretive and less open about how this stuff is done and all, to be honest. I don't know the reason for it, but for me difference is there and it is visible.

Because manga is a big deal and no one cares about fantasy literature from Poland?

Har har har. Both british and american authors also seem a lot more open than manga and industry. Altough one could argue that nobody cares about literature in general anymore, But every other branch of industry dealing in popular culture also seems a lot more open than manga industry.

But the Witcher is a great series (and video game)

Currently reading Chapter 45 of Bakuman.
Very different from Togashi. -
If you look in the right avenues or live in the correct place, Hunter X Hunter anime is out!

How long has the hiatus been now.

Maybe Togashi is waiting for One Piece to be over before he gets back in the ring :ninja:

I found it on tumblr. Probably belonged to justpedothings.tumblr.com.
Stupidly good episode… though I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on the pacing. Holy will probably have a field day with Pitou in this episode.
-
You see this is why adaptations always suck. They miss out on important details. If I hadn't read the manga, I wouldn't even know exactly how Pitou's muscles worked; the anime would have just left me wondering.
Edit: Apparently that didn't happen yet in the story. Fuck, then I guess it was a good episode.

After watching the latest episode this picture is the most fitting reaction I can think of. I'd actually forgotten how OP Netero was but my god was this episode a good reminder. The only thing that irked me was that I was kinda hoping for a new animation in the opening which focused more on the invasion but I guess were not getting that until later. Other than that another fantastic episode and I cannot wait until next Tuesday.
-
I just watched the episode. Whoa that was awesome. The way the executed the early part of the Invasion is very different from the manga even though the events go the same way, just the feel of them come off differently
Anyone else was reminded of Evangelion 25 and 26 when they watched this episode? The way the pulled of the action and character introspection, and especially the constant freeze frames to invoke emotional or suspenseful responses reminded me a lot of it. They moved some scenes around from later in the arc so their can be more focus on the action and that parts and I think it's a change for the better.
Bring on next week which the preview implies will feature one of my favorite scenes of the arc! Pitou's tears of joy yes yes.
-
Dat budget saving this episode, many stillshots but I'm excite for when they use it.
Need smooth and impressive animation for Ikarugo fight. I'm disappoint if Lobsterman doesn't have mad animated skillz. -
This episode should win an award. If I was Hisoka, I'd be cuming in my pants too.
On that note, I've always wondered why Hisoka didn't go to East Groto as well? The Six Strongest characters (Meruem, Youpi, Pitou, Pouf, Zeno and Netero) in the series are there right now.
