Now i lets hope that Chinjao is not so hot headed from now on, because that's what bringed half of his problems let's see if now he uses his head more before rushing through his problems.:ninja:
One Piece 719: Open Chinjao

-
That chapter was great; first up, props to Caribou for not disappointing my expectations and actually resembling a human being to help the old lady. Im gonna say it, Oda totally based Chinjao off the movie 'Coneheads'. I sense a change in attitude towards Luffy by Chinjao now that his head is fixed and he can get his treasure back.
-
Let this forever be a part of history http://i.imgur.com/nrELx9p.jpg
Great chapter, didn't see that twist coming. Excellent observation on Ka No Kuni detail, i wonder how it might play if Wano Kuni could be the opposite of kano. (summer island?)
-
I can't get enough of Chinjao's head. lol This guy must have had trouble walking through doors.
Good chapter, with a much needed flashback on Don's past with Garp.
Speaking of Garp, it's great to see him again even if it's a flashback. I've always been a fan of his salt 'n pepper hair back in the old days.Thor Elephant Gun doesn't look all that impressive. I can't tell if that's supposed to be actual electricity or just a shock effect.
At least it's not a G2/G3 combination attack. It's too early for that.Apparently Thor was some kind of gun back in the day. So no it has nothing to do with electricity.
-
From this chapter i just got the idea of barto being a member of big mom pirates so when he said to Cavendish that he wont be the one to kill him he meant that someone else will killhim, like Big mom that have a grudge on luffy.
What do you think ppl? -
So after this chapter we have new information:
-Gol D Roger wasn't able to defeat ALL the four emperors (of his time) and the marine admirals.
I think you should read the chapter more carefully. Chinjao said the exact opposite. And we know from before that WB was the only person in the whole world that could match Roger's strength (and that is the reason he got the title of the strongest man in the world after Roger died) so that isn't a new information at all.
-
Yea, that's what I thought as well, it's just another spot on the island / continent..
But that doesn't make sense unless they were discovering random blotches of treasure. If they were storing it and it wasn't freezing over, then they'd just be leaving it there in heaps in the middle of an icy island.
-
So after this chapter we have new information:
-Gol D Roger wasn't able to defeat ALL the four emperors (of his time) and the marine admirals.
There were no Yonkous during Roger's time. The emperors are simply the emperors because they are at an impasse, a cold war if you will where when one of them makes a significant move towards the One piece the other three will put them down and hard. So they've been shoring up their strength or at least that's what they did at the beginning but like Law said they have become complacent and content to rule their little parts of the sea.
-
Oh wow we're a bunch of blockheads. There's a raw version of the chapter but nobody remembers to let C3 know. '-'

who knows.but i always thought that the level of an emperor is higher than the level of a king(like in the roman ancient empire one emperor and several kings here and there).again is "emperor " a good translation of yonkou?
-
Maybe it's just me but I think Luffy/Oda added the "Thor" part in the Elephant Gun because the attack's movement reminds of a thunder striking the ground. :ninja:
-
I liked this Chapter over all, I'd been complaining about the fights possibly being skipped for a while now so I'm glad we got the Luffy-Chinjao fight concluded. Really glad to see Luffy use 'Thor' attacks, that Thor Axe from Strong World was incredible.
Glad to see that we got a flashback for Chinjao that wasn't too long, it really got to the point and it's always great to see a more Prime Garp in action "Forget Sandbag's, I obliterated 8 mountains into dust training for this moment." - And that's probably what happened
.
I wonder if Chinjao's treasure still exists, buried under all of that ice. Interesting that even having been retired for so long and admittedly out of touch with the new pirate age that Chinjao is still remotely familiar with Teach. Well it's a good thing we have Burgess here and that the dunce has finally recognised that it's Luffy, if that fight is executed right it'll be a good measure for the strength of the BB pirates against Luffy right now since Burgess is part of the first 4 crew members.
-

The only difference I can see here is that Luffy attacks from the sky.. so ye.
-
Oh and DC = Strawberry. We already saw a "pointed-head" guy before D:
-

I think the "Thor" aspect is just for attacks which are launched from above whilst using Gear 3 such as the Thor Axe in Strong World. Might be a new moniker Luffy's been using since Strong World; I'm not certain he's been consistent with this.
-
Oh and DC = Strawberry. We already saw a "pointed-head" guy before D:
To me its more like DC= Ussop and Strawberry=Kaku but with their heads instead of the noses since Strawberry has a square shaped head.

As far as I know yonkou means "four emperors" or something like that. I think they called them emperors because it would be easier to distinguish them from THE pirate king .

Can someone clarify if that is Caribou disguised as Gaburu seemingly ready to take on Scotch? The clothes and reactions from the crew imply its so, but I'm not sure.
-
@Light:
Since the arena was destroyed, are they gonna hold rest of the tournament somewhere else, or can they somehow fix it? :ermm:
Don't worry, Toguro is going to haul in the ring from the old Colosseum.
-

Yes, it is. The paint swabs his crew is holding and the sloppily painted on stars and "Gaburu" certainly to signify it, with the reactions of the real crew of Gaburu on the shore in complete awe. It also just makes the most sense taking into account the previous pages of the cover story.
-
Soooo basically Burgess vs Straw Hat Luffy ?
-
10/10. Arguably the best chapter of the arc so far.
Chinjao's past was great. There was no overdrawn flashback, it was simple and to the point. It was great to see Garp, especially in his prime. I guess Chinjao'll be an ally now that he's able to reclaim the treasure.
I like the way the fight went. Chinjao was a challenge, but nothing too big. It makes sense - he's old and his greatest weapon was dismantled. The Thor attack was cool. I don't think it was electrical, it just 'came from above'.
I hope we get to see Cavendish fight. It'd be a bit anti-climactic if Block D didn't happen. But, as I'm not too fond of the Colosseum, I wouldn't mind missing it as long as Cavendish fights. I taught the factory was going to be discovered when Chinjao cracked the floor.
Things are getting real tense backstage. I think Burgess is just glad someone very strong like Luffy is there, and he doesn't plan to try to kill him whatever chance he gets. From the look on his face, and that he was eavesdropping on Barto and Cav, I think Bellamy could wind up protecting Luffy from them.
Coverstory: I don't like how Caribou is going back to help just like that. He's a zealot and a rapist that only cares about money. There's been no signs of him reconsidering his ways throughout the whole thing. It just feels random.
-
No there weren't go back and read the chapter where Garp explains about the Yonkou. The Yonkou only became the Yonkou after Roger and during the great pirate era and only because they begun gathering territories(nations) for strength did they become one of the 3 powers of the world since any confrontation between them would be similar to dozens of nations going to war.
Plus during Rogers time, piracy was simply been outlaws and stuff. No one was interested in becoming kings or emperors.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I'm as assuming Coribou been with him would imply this, but who knows.
I don't see that Garp said anything about when the Yonkou term was made. Maybe I'm just reading a shitty chapter 432 translation, but I doubt it. Anyway could you provide me a link then where does Garp say that the Yonkous appeared after Roger's death?
-
Thanks guys, I should have figured as much. I'm liking where his story is going, it would be nice to see if Scotch can fire Haki imbued rounds at Caribou. Caribou abandons his brothers, steals from the granny, and now comes back with a conscience, fine but his redemptiom is not lasting long with his Ancient Weapon secret.
-
Prime Garp looks so badass can't wait to see how strong Dragon is the hype is killing me
-
i thought this will be a boring chapter (from spoilers) but it was enjoyable, and Chinjao's expression after each punch was gold haha. pretty funny shit.
-
This chapter is basically "How To Put a Flashback on Your Villain to Give Them Depth" 101. KishiKubo (yes, I'm putting those 2 names together, just to save space) should really learn from this. Its short, relevant and gives a good amount of character depth without detracting from the story too much.
I suppose we'll cut to another group next chapter, but I don't think we have much time left. Ussopp n his dwarf army are on their way there, so as much as I hate to say this, I don't think this tournament is going to make it to the finals.
-
Why didnt the audience or Gatz san recognize Luffy? He used a gum gum Move. Inflated his arm.
My explanation would be that, the first move grabbing Chinjaos head by stretching the arms was way to fast for the specators to see. The THOR Elephant gun maybe gave a huge flash when colliding with Chinjaos head so no one could, otherwise i could not explain it. I mean he is quite famous. Why the disguise if people even dont recognize his signature DF Moves with the stretching and all. In the panel before the blow his arm seems to be stretched out like 10-20 meters and his fist huge as fuck. It is obviously the mugiwara. Anyone has another explanation?
My explanation would be that, given the fact that Luffh'a armament moves are fairly new (post-time skip), the wider public may not know of them and therefore wouldn't recognize it (at least instantly) as a Gomu Gomu technique.
-
People were speculating that Garp married Chinjao's love interest, when it turns out that when Chinjao said "treasure" he literally meant treasure. It wasn't a metaphor for anyone, it was actual treasure.
I love when people come up with deep speculations and the actual reveal is something more simple and/or literal. Reminds me of the time when people speculated the burger stuck to Vergo's face was related to a Devil Fruit power (velcro DF was a common theory), but he was actually just a messy eater.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not making fun of either of the two predictions. They were good ideas. I just find it hilarious when this happens.
-
Uh…gonna have to disagree with you there. That's very clearly a "there goes Lucy/Lucy springs into action/Lucy's on the move" line. It is happening at the same time that Luffy leaps forward to use Hawk Rifle, and saying the name of the move does not really count as "Lucy's saying something!" in that context. That makes no sense. If Gyats was reacting to the "Gomu Gomu no..." line, Oda would have used something much clearer. Like "eh? ima nante...?" ("What? Did I just hear that correctly?")
While I wasn't disagreeing with this last week, and was simply making note that it could work both ways, obviously Luffy wasn't found out yet like I thought he would be by using his Devil Fruit, so I figured I should at least note that I was wrong. Good of Stephen to be around and correct things last week.
-
This is exactly what I pictured when I saw this panel.

He looks more like a garden gnome to me. Especially in his old age.
-
Looks like Chinjao's gonna end up liking Luffy… whatta plot twist. Great chapter. Full of lulz.
-
Pretty good concise chapter. a few thoughts;
-the cover story is honestly boring me, seems repetitive but i feel the pay off should be big. With that said, i looked back at previous cover stories and the longest one was "From the Decks of the world" with 48 installments, so i think this cover story might end within the next 12-17 chapters which would put it on par with most of the bigger ones with 6 volumes.
-Another person to underestimate luffy, smh…even tho he did have a disclaimer that he's out of touch with the newer generation. I wonder what accomplishments exactly chinjao is referring to and with the fact that he retired 30 years ago its interesting that he mentioned blackbeard who wouldnt have been a pirate before then.
-chinjai comments about ace definitely bothered luffy and chinjao paid for it
Also, he retired 30 years ago, and i think its safe to assume he had the 500 million bounty by then and who's to say that would have been his peak? Its also interesting that it seemed like garp and him encountered each other before and as such caused garp to actually go and train to beat him. If his bounty was thought of as just for show, this should prove that he deserved it. With that said, Chinjao is definitely someone i look forward to seeing later with his newly reformed head.-
the Thor elephant gun felt misleading but it makes sense after a few of you pointed out that its like a lightning strike from up above, so pretty cool.
With the effects of what it did, i think its a gentleman's hat tip or recognition to show that luffy's current punch is comparable to that of garp's 30 years ago. Nice growth luffy, very nice. -
I was definitely one of those that thought we might have seen the factory after chinjao inadvertently split the ring but i guess thats for later.
-
someone pointed it out earlier, but i think its an interesting theory that Bartolomeo is working for Big Mam; not an actual crew member but an ally. I have little to no evidence to back up this claim but i like it. the fact that he
1.) looks physically weird while Big Mam's crew members look naturally weird as well
2.) doesnt seem like a friendly to luffy
3.) that he seems to be working for someone and as such probably a yonkou as its the new world
4.) not a friendly; so no shanks and Burgess is there so either Big mam or kaido and with the fact that luffy just challenged Big Mam i see her more likely. -
Last page is a nice leeway into the following chapters to come, Burgess and Bartolomeo both winners of their own block are interested and slightly excited about luffy's appearance, a Block D contender Cavendish is also on the prowl for luffy and Bellamy contemplating life's very existence to follow his dream to be apart of DD crew or have an epiphany, Very good stuff.
-
-
yeah this is classic one piece
it really had everything great about the series. definitely the best chapter of this arc and maybe even the best since the timeskipalso I still think Bartolomeo is on Luffy's side. he has yet to say anything to definitively express his hatred for Luffy; all of his dialogue in that respect has been noticeably ambiguous. even in this chapter, despite his sinister face, what he's saying could easily mean he's going to protect Luffy from Cavendish (and Cavendish' subsequent response would be appropriate). also Bellamy has really become an awesome character
I Have to agree with this!!. His internal struggles are making him so absurdly likeable, that I even clinched a little when I saw him brooding. Even if we have had enemies who had become allies or even Nakamas (Franky-Robin) we have never had an enemy who has had an inner struggle of this magnitude. Now presented with yet another oportunity to Join the DD family, Bellami is on the fence to wether take the offer or not (He seems to respect Luffy now and even shows some empathy towards him). Speaking of which does he have any other choices? Everybody does, but considering all the different feelings that Doflamingo inspire maybe Bellami feels intimidated to some extent. I honestly can´t understand Doflamingo. If there is a virtue that Bellami has shown is that unrequested Loyalty to the Quijote family, which captains wouldn´t love to have a crewmember with that trait. He almost worships dofla. Yet, after he visited Sky Island, it seems that a new whole world has oppened in front of his eyes, he suddenly seems as someone who can dream (Being his dream to join the DD). Even if the old Binami was a prick, I hope Oda has great plans for him. The dude deserves it

I completely agree with you on Bellamy as a character. I also hope Oda has great plans for him and maybe his inner strugles might lead to an unexpected result. (and this just adds to the flashback list of this arc that so far only one was crossed out, chinjao'/)
-
Heh, I like how Garp and Chinjao just got out of their ships to a small island for their dual, and with Garps line, it probably isn't the first time, either.
LOL, It's like 2 guys stepping out of their cars for a good old fashion fight on the street, or side walk. Still, I can relate to that. I've seen it enough times.
-
I don't think cavendish and Barto are underestimating Luffy but I think they overestimate themselves. Barto probably hasn't faced any one who could smash his barrier.
-
I havent laughed that hard from OP in a while. Reminded me why I love this series so much
-
I notice that you translated directly the attacks and you not provide an explanation of them as TN
-
It seems like Hawk Rifle doesn't have flames and what makes "Red Hawk" = "Red" is the fire obviously. That said does anyone think Thor Elephant Gun is random? I mean it seems obvious Red Hawk creates a fire via friction, but where da fuck does lightning come from?
-
Great chapter.
3rd Arc after the timeskip and the question still remains: How strong is Luffy now? Chinjao was supposed to be this "legend" but that fight was more like a warmup for Luffy. Luffy just took out a man Garp trained hard to beat in the past. That's significant.Seems like Bartolomeo wants to stop Cavendish from trying to kill Luffy rather than try to kill Luffy before him. Interesting.
Will there even be a block D? The platform was just split in half and the war is about to begin underneath the ring.
Cant wait to see whats next.
-
I have a feeling that Luffy somehow learnt how to manipulate certain elements, especially fire and electricity. He trained on a harsh island where weather conditions changes with each week that goes by. We know for a fact that his new attacks are inspired by the beasts that inhabits the island, why not the weather conditions there? Its either his haki or his rubber ability that helps him do this, I don't know… if it is his ability..we know rubber can produce heat (Red Hawk), as well as static electricity (Snake Shot, Thor Elephant) so for me that makes sense. As for haki, I'm guessing it has something to do with king's haki. I mean, there has to be something more than just making people faint. Shanks' haki was strong enough to damage WB's ship (was it wind? his aura? who knows...). Also, when Roger fought Shiki there was a sudden weather change, maybe Roger's haki has something to do with it?
I really think there's more to this. Just because he attacked from above like a lightning doesn't make it like a lightning attack. I mean, he struck many times from above before but he never called it with 'Thor'. There has to be some sort of electricity there for him to call it 'Thor'.
-
man and i was so looking forward to block D but as things are it's hardy that it will last till the end or even start..
-
BTW, how do you take Chinjao's comments about Ace? Does he hate Roger too or something, so he was happy the marines killed his only son? Or was that a way to aknowledge that Ace had the chops to be the next Pirate King and, thus, the marines did well in killing him, as in, in the marines interest, not Chinjao's particulary?
In other words, was Chinjao happy they killed Ace, or was he praising the marines for actually doing their job properly?

I was actually thinking the same thing about the conquers haki being able to effect weather somehow. It would explain the sudden lightening strike that saved luffy in lougetown, and the always convenient storms and gusts of wind and such. maybe it just makes you extremely lucky :wassat:

Chinjao's backstory is the exact mix of over-the-top power and silliness we should come to expect from One Piece. As for Bartolomeo, it's increasingly obvious that he has some connection to Moriah. The two dress similarly, both have a ghoulish appearance (though Bartolomeo's is more troll-like), and though we as the reader know that Moriah was saved by Absalom, the world thinks he's dead, which gives Bartolomeo a motive to hate Luffy. Though it's possible that Bartolomeo knows Moriah is still alive, and Moriah is the "mysterious benefactor" Bartolomeo is working for.

"Increasingly obvious" is quite a strong term to describe a connection backed by virtually nothing.

Nobody gives an inch here.
Fine, there's no damn connection. Bartolomeo may not know Moria from shit on a wall. Happy?
