@Monkey:
It actually….is almost essentially illegal to be gay. It's a very very open law. Basically being open at all, in any way, is grounds for legal action.
The way it's worded it's not teaching, it's anything expressing homosexuality aside from in a negative light.
So any gay person acting in any way openly gay aside from in the private of their home and with people they can trust, is breaking the law.
Imagine the Republican wet dream, short of the ones who admire Saudi Arabia straight up killing gays.
It's basically one big law telling gays to hide it all forever from everyone else. It's much worse than you thought.
Oh and Putin also signed into a law a thing that forbids adoption from countries that have legal gay marriage. Which cuts off almost all of the rich countries in Western/North Europe that actually do things like adopt Russian babies. Plus Canada, and trending Scotland, trending US etc (no idea if that means people from gay marriage states are ineligible).
Yeah, it really is that bad. The law also extends to non-Russians, so a gay couple from the US could be potentially arrested.
This set of photos on Buzzfeed shows LGBT people protesting this law, with sadly predictable results. It's honestly terrifying.
Also, from what I've heard, keeping it to your own home won't necessarily save you either. If you're attacked for being perceived to be gay, the police will turn a blind eye. Heck, they'll probably join in. And god help you if you're trans. There's not really any escape, which is another factor into why this is so chilling.
In case anyone still believed the IOC have any strong sense of ethics over profit, well, think again.
