Can you explain im confused
So glad OP is back; it really is the highlight of my week. I hope Oda is back to 100% or is at least getting there; I had my tonsils removed as well and believe me THE FIRST WEEK SUCKS!! It hurts every time you swallow and the Ice Cream hardly helped (Im just talking from my personal experience though). On the bright side; the following 3 weeks of soft foods were not so bad…...........What can I say; there is actually something enjoyable about eating much of your food through a straw (forgoes that whole chewing thing). This chapter was pretty enjoyable; it gave some more spotlight Bellamy's change in persona and hints that he could ally with the Strawhats in the future. Those Fighting Fish freakin huge and were shattering the Iron Bridge; no wonder nobody ever crossed it. The character interactions were great; it is rare to see Robin and Usopp, but they really work well together. Law got a fair limitation for his DF, nice Even Caeser was portrayed more comical. Finally, Dwarves are going to be introduced; I wonder if we may get kinda a 'Santa's Workshop' allegory with the Dwarves and the Living Toys.
@Nex:
Do me a favor and give me a legitimate answer: why, to you, is the tournament awesome?
it is a remarkable demonstration of how oda took a pretty generic concept and utilized it as an ideal opportunity for world building at an impressive level.
Really? What exactly has he done to be redeemed? Ohh he believes in dreams now, that practically makes him a nice guy.
Bellamy was an asshole, not a war criminal or anything serious. Now he is not an asshole, therefore anyone still hanging onto hating him is being ridiculous.
My respect for Bellamy went up
@Monkey:
Bellamy was an asshole, not a war criminal or anything serious. Now he is not an asshole, therefore anyone still hanging onto hating him is being ridiculous.
Exactly how is he not an asshole now, based on what? Obviously he respects Luffy after being knocked out by one punch and isn't going to act tough around him, but I do wonder where it shows that Bellamy has turned into a nice guy.
it is a remarkable demonstration of how oda took a pretty generic concept and utilized it as an ideal opportunity for world building at an impressive level.
THIS.
And also a easy way to introduce many characters. Cause its not an arc involving only Dressrosa kingdom, it will probably involve Wano, Prodence and some others as well as many groups, not only strawhat's but also Marines, CP0, Underworld, Yonkou, others pirates crew, etc. It is a huge plot.
Why would Bellamy have to be a "nice guy"? This is the world of pirates, where all people pretty much do is killing and badmouthing marines or each other. Hell Luffy himself is planning to kick Kaidou's ass for no other reason that he is an Yonkou! Bellamy did exactly the same stealing Cricket's gold but Luffy stole it back and beat him already. It's just water under the bridge now.

"I won't laugh at you." Not to mention the change in his beliefs, concerning dreams. Dreams he's trying to fulfill now, protecting Dressrosa, visiting Skypeia, his whole demeanor is pretty different really.
@Nex:
Do me a favor and give me a legitimate answer: why, to you, is the tournament awesome?
I'll answer this on, even tho it wasnt directed to me. What I like of the tournament so far, is the new characters. Characters and their abilities is one of the things I really like in One piece, Oda gives amazing character designs, and most of them are interesting to me. I also like the fighting in one piece, yes, i know there hasnt been many ''real'' fights yet, but it's always interesting to me to see new characters fighting each other. Of course I also like the stuff happening during the rounds, aka luffy vs chinjao vs the durandal guy (forgot is name, total blank). Overall, I just like the atmosphere that the tournament puts me threw, the danger, I dont rly know how to explain it, my post would of been a lot better in french haha.
@Nex:
See, what I'm wondering is this: you remember that thread X started, the one about if you wanted One-Piece to have a tourney or not? http://forums.arlongpark.net/showthread.php?t=38298
47% of the voters said no. What the hell happened to all of them?
The same thing that happened to all the people who voted against a timeskip. They realized that the world wasn't ending and have moved on. And probably many have now seen the merits.
Why am I the only person who is still not on board?
Because you have a ridiculous hang up about tournaments in general.
I know that by how I phrased the question it probably seemed like I was being a douche, but I am honestly looking for answers as to why people are so in love with this tournament. Answers other than simply "Fights."
It is in fact fun action mixed with interesting and fun characters and bits of world building. The pacing so far has been pretty good too. And as proven with this chapter, as many of us expected Oda is going to intersperse out of ring plot along the way basically making for excellent pacing and plot variety while it goes on.
I can find the good in almost anything. I mean, I am a Fishman Island defender. I love the Foxy arc. I love Thriller Bark, because I always remember the good before I remember the bad, and that's just not happening yet with this arc. :sad:
I wouldn't actually describe you that way but alright.
It was poorly done from a story-telling standpoint. Everything was riding in high gear
Uh not anymore than say the end of Whiskey Peak. We weren't rushing into a huge big fight, but into a long possibly many arced period of conflict and intrigue. Where breaks would follow and whole islands would be explored in between.
We had a princess to rush back to her wartorn kingdom to save it, but we sat through a Dinosaur island with giants, and a snow island with a wholly unrelated plot that scored a new crewmember.
Punk Hazard was the Whiskey Peak for the "Kaidou Plot" or whatever you wanna call it. Dressrosa is not going to be some vacant lot where a fight happens and a plot gets resolved. It's going to be like almost every arc, a plot and island in of itself that we are meant to enjoy. Oda isn't the type to rush through islands as scenery on the way to other things, even when he should have (Enies Lobby).
starting at the end of Punk Hazard. Doffy was on his way and he was pissed. There was a lot of tension. The whole group was on edge. They land and we get the amazing chapter 701. So many plot points are introduced. We get to see what may be the most unique and interesting island Oda's developed, and then, everything grinds to a halt for the tournament.
We stop getting to explore Dressrosa, we don't get to follow any of the other plotlines, and all that tension is gone. While I'm not a fan of tournament arcs in general, I would have probably been more okay with it if it had been introduced at a different time.
Kind of going hand in hand with the first, I want the adventure! We got a tiny little taste of the island and it was taken away from us for the tournament. One of the reasons I loved this chapter so much is that we finally got Oda doing his crazy environments and animals again.
Oda introduced like eight plot lines or whatever it was, Luffy/Franky, Robin/Usopp/Law/Kinemon, Nami/Chopper/Brooke, Zoro, and Sanji. The obviousness of us getting to see plenty was established from the start. Not to mention the tournament features aspects of the island and Dofla's people. I'm excited to learn more about his crew and what kind of group they are. And we have five of them we'll encounter here, plus Bellamy.
Barto is clearly more than strong fodder by this point and has some major plot behind him no doubt. Plus we keep meeting interesting world building peoples like Chinjao. You're acting like this is mindless fighting devoid of any spices and colors, as gray and cold as any given page of Bleach. It's really nothing like that. This is filled with the adventure aspect of One Piece, it's almost like a mix of the cantina scene in Star Wars with a Dragonball Budokai.
For a tournament, there haven't been any good fights so far. It's just been chaos, and we haven't really gotten to see much of anything outside of the very end of the B Block fight.
It's a battle royale, it's chaotic in a limited way. It's much more free and fresh that way from the usual types of fights we see. If it turned into 1v1 it would go much slower as well.
A whole bunch of characters, who, outside of Chinjao, I'm not interested in, and am convinced will just be dropped to the wayside once this is all over with.
Yes, most of them will. Just like we will never see the hiking bear again. Or the fighting dugongs. Or T-Bone. Or Johnny and Yosaku. Or any other little spices Oda's thrown on things. That's part of the adventure you know, the wierdos you meet on the way.
Bellamy's redemption.
Is good and interesting, and totally unsurprising coming from Oda. And way tamer than Crocodile teaming up with Luffy. Considering Bellamy was just an asshole who made fun of people, and Crocodile caused a civil war for personal gain and world conquering ambition.
You are ok with Slobodan Milosevic temporarily teaming up with our hero, but not the high school bully who gave you a swirly. Think about that.
The fact that if this is all a trap for Luffy, then it's the worst storytelling Oda has ever done, because it makes no logistical sense as to how this could be a trap for Luffy.
I'm also really angry about that thing that hasn't happened.
Just to reiterate, I've never read One-Piece for the fights. I read it for the story, the world building, the characters. And right now, we've been focusing on my least favorite aspect of the series.
Except we haven't, because that's exactly the kind of OP fan I am and I'm more than sated by all the story, world building, and character development we've been seeing so far. Especially compared to the previous arc.
Thank you for a legitimate answer to my question. Like I've said, I like Chinjao and see some potential there. Burgess is interesting, but he just kinda disappeared. I mean, where did he go??
Jesus is somewhere and we will see him when Oda wants us too. He hasn't vanished because the tournament is still going on. This should kind of go without saying.
The other characters I don't feel strongly towards one way or the other. Which is disappointing to me. I mean, it really, really is. Hack has a lot of potential as a character, but no that he's beat
Hack was world building spice, and went down exactly like world building spice. Maybe we'll see him, maybe we won't.
And, the way Oda's been telling the story in this arc so far, I doubt we'll pick up where we left off. The next chapter will probably be titled "C Block." :/
I'm willing to bet you were posting or thinking that we would stay in the tournament without seeing any of the other developments until this chapter.
@Panda:
They absolutely key word there, however, being 'if'. We've seen plenty of times in One Piece that reputation is not necessarily an accurate representation of how a person truly is. Even Luffy has been talked about as being a crazy, ruthless pirate himself. All we really have to go on is what we've actually seen from Bart first-hand. First impressions are everything, as they say; and the first thing we got out of Bart – disregarding the off-screen beating of that VA -- is him throwing a bomb into the middle of the audience, exactly in line with his reputation... except that it wasn't really a bomb at all, but completely harmless.
He very clearly enjoys messing with people -- which, in case you'd missed the explanation in previous threads, is where the 'cannibal' title comes from; it's effectively a sort of Japanese equivalent of calling someone a 'troll' in English -- and seems to even revel in his reputation. None of that means his reputation is actually deserved, though, and if anything, his little ball-throwing stunt would make it more likely that it is in fact not.
Not that any of that necessarily does anything to imply that he's going to end up as a 'good' guy, or an ally, or anything of the sort. It's simply that it's important to use hard evidence when attempting to create a judgement of a character's, well, character, rather than in-story hearsay and rumor.
Yes. The if is important. That's… why i used it. So, put bluntly but not to insult, i don't feel the lecture on making character judgments is necessary.
But for the sake of argument i have a couple points of contention. First, it could easily be that Barto was simply trolling in this instance because if he actually did bomb the audience he would be kicked out of the tournament and lose all hope of getting the mera mera to 'him'. And secondly, it was the "distribution of the skewered pirate barbeque broadcast". This isn't just rumors and world government propaganda. There is apparently video out there of Bartolomeo skewering and barbequing pirates (and what does one generally do with barbeque?). Granted, this could be rumours and misdirection, but the thing is rumours and misdirection would have worked just as well without ever bringing up the issue of actual video. That bit is interesting to me.
Barto's character could go in any number of directions from here, but just as likely if not more so than him turning out to be a fan of Luffy's, or whatever else, is that he is as he appears to be.
Personally, i wonder if 'him' isn't actually Kidd. Bartolomeo dresses to fit in perfectly with Kidd and his crew, specifically aims to inflict civilian causalities for the hell of it like Kidd (or pretends to), is needlessly brutal like Kidd, and has a very similar disregard for what people think.
@Nex:
Do me a favor and give me a legitimate answer: why, to you, is the tournament awesome?
I like the action
I like the plot developments and mystery around Kyros
I like the comedy
I like many of the new characters and the interaction among themselves and Luffy
I like the anticipation of one of my favorite characters in fiction participating in it
I like tournaments in general
Against my expectation, i actually really liked seeing Bellamy's character arc continue
I liked the many 'cool' and 'badass' moments so far
I like when layers of texture are added to the One Piece universe in general, in this case it's particularly interesting to see one of Garp's old enemies
I like… this can go on.
Why does it even matter to you? I'm sure i know what you're trying to do, which is to attempt to prove that the tournament portions of this arc are somehow objectively bad, which is ridiculous. It holds up perfectly well to One Piece standards and that you don't like it is irrelevant. Get over yourself.
Exactly how is he not an asshole now, based on what? Obviously he respects Luffy after being knocked out by one punch and isn't going to act tough around him, but I do wonder where it shows that Bellamy has turned into a nice guy.
Because he no longer does the thing that actually made him so hateable. Laugh and mock dreams. That is what made him such a huge asshole, and that's explicitly been shown to be gone.
Anything else is just normal pirating that we've even seen people like Zeff do, and nobody gets in a tizzy about sympathizing with him.
I noticed in every single panel Law's hands tattoos and finger tattoos are missing, i think Oda had more fun drawing his chest tattoo instead XD
Delivery in 14 minutes. So, the next section may Dof.
Are you having a stroke? What is this post lol.
He's saying Doflamingo may arrive in the next chapter, hahaha. Since the delivery is only 14 minutes away.
@Monkey:

hahaha i loled, he prolly meant that doflas gonna appear soon because of the 14 minutes

Kaido of the Seven Dwarfs :ninja:
But that was a great chapter, nice to see Robin in action finally.
Personally, I think it looks like as if Barto is sort of frightened at hearing Luffy's name, either way it's a unexpected reaction…I'm not a fan of him being a Luffy fan though.
My english is very poor. I'm looking at the dictionary. :/
All will be forgiven if you tell us where you're from and it is an interesting place that I want to hear about!
Haki was mentioned as soon as willpower and ambition were brought up.
Lest we forget that Haki is more than One Piece's version of ki.
Pretty cool chapter.
Bartolomeo's reaction to finding out Luffy's identity sorta threw me off there. I wonder why he was so startled at the revelation. Good Ol' Oda just keeps the mysteries comin'.
One thing does bother me, though. Some of you guys are wondering why Law is surprised at the marines being there. . .Where? Where did that happen? All I see him is doing a facade, one that Robin instantly saw through, but Caesar didn't. But he didn't act surprised at all, at least not from what I've understood here.
What i understood from that panel is that he was kind of trying to keep it a secret. What i can deduce from all this is that because Caesar was with them all the time, he wanted to have part of the plan unknown so that Caesar wouldn't somehow notify DD about the marines.
Some people seem confused, so I'll make it clear.
Law gave Doflamingo the ultimatum of discarding his Warlord title, which he did, and purposely got the Marines to come to Green Bit by telling Smoker he would be there.
He's pitting Doflamingo against Fujitora, it's all part of his master plan.

All I see him is doing a facade, one that Robin instantly saw through, but Caesar didn't. But he didn't act surprised at all, at least not from what I've understood here.
I think Caesar did begin to suspect, although not in that panel. First he was upset about the possibility of the plan being leaked ("Why didn't anyone tell me!?") and then he flat out accuses Law of orchestrating everything right after Law decides to dispatch Usopp and Robin into the forest to check out the Marines/dwarves. From Caesar's perspective, he's seeing the simple exchange plan breaking down (Marine presence + SHs wandering off somewhere) into a more complicated scheme by Law. Which makes sense. Law wouldn't dare take on DD in a straight-up fight, especially when he's already told us that he's saving up his stamina for the "return trip," which to me implies, "we're going to be running away from here in a hurry," after accomplishing whatever Law's real objective is (might just be delaying DD long enough for Franky to take out the factory… or bringing DD face-to-face with an Admiral. That sort of foresight doesn't seem unreasonable, even if he didn't know which Admiral would come).
For some reason I'm getting the feeling Usopp is gonna end up saving Caesar from being killed.
great chapter im glad the focus is on the return ceaser team instead of the shitty tournament i hope next weeks chapter continues off from this one
I'm interested in these Dwarves
so you can tell someones haki level? like power levels in dbz? does that mean Bellamy got haki too?
Is Law still a shichibukai? I can't remember if he is, but if he's still a shichibukai, then wouldn't he technically be allied with the marines? Personally, I think Law choose Usopp and Robin to come with him because they aren't as well know as Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. If Law runs into the marines, he should be able to get away without a fight using his shichibukai title. If Luffy was part of Law's group, then Law's title probably wouldn't be able to prevent a fight because the marines would come after Luffy for sure + Luffy wanted to destroy the factory lol. Anyways, that's my opinion.
@Buggy:
so you can tell someones haki level? like power levels in dbz? does that mean Bellamy got haki too?
It's almost certainly not specific like that. Rather just a general sense of things. Basically you can sense no haki, barely perceptible haki, normal haki, strong haki, intimidatingly strong haki etc.. Most likely that's how it works. It also probably depends how apt you are at using CoO.
And well, every single person has haki, but yes, Bellamy has learned about and developed haki at some point.

Also, Law probably understands by now that Luffy (and Zoro and Sanji for that matter) should be kept far away from high-stakes negotiations and prisoner exchanges. That and Robin& Usopp are the best ranged fighters the crew has, and can both fight decently without being spotted (Robin with her clones and Usopp with his range, sniper skills, and botany). Law wants to make it look like its just him and DD, but Usopp and Robin are both great and being able to interfere from afar.

Except Robin is actually well-known and Sanji is actually unknown.

even before luffy ever became famous ROBIN was famous. The whole enes lobby arc was centred around her and we all saw how desperately they want to silence her. She may not be as famous with common folk as luffy or zoro but with marines she's very well known i guess. Atleast on paper they havent revoked Law's shichibukai status yet. But who knows what order has been given to marines by Akainu regarding Laws status.
If Law actually manages to bring down Kaido, I doubt the WG would want to cut him loose. A shichibukai that beat a yonkou?
If Law actually manages to bring down Kaido, I doubt the WG would want to cut him loose. A shichibukai that beat a yonkou?
At that point he'd quit.
Why don't you people like the tournament? It's an awesome way for Oda to show his stuff! New character personalities, new powers and moves from new characters (King Punch, Bartolomeo's Devil Fruit), return of old characters(Bellamy, Jesus Burgess), and just fun character interaction. Some people are just unpleasable. :/
Anyways, I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed Law's revised tattoo. Wonder what it signifies.
Who says they don't like the tournament ?_?
About Law:
@CCC:

That is exactly what I think is hinted at, I mean we saw in Punk Hazard that Law wants to escape before DD arrives. I don't think Law would want to fight DD now… unless Law though that Luffy, Zoro, Smoker and the others would hold him, ussop and Robin from beating DD. The return trip is probably gonna be a serie of teleports while DD and Fuji are forced to fight...
About Belly: I guess Luffy somehow knew that Bellamy didn't attack the skypians, maybe he's a fine psychologist… or he knew that if Bellamy attacked theskypians he wouldn't be alive to talk about it...Wiper...
That's probably why he's thinking he's alright now.
"I won't laugh at you." Not to mention the change in his beliefs, concerning dreams. Dreams he's trying to fulfill now, protecting Dressrosa, visiting Skypeia, his whole demeanor is pretty different really.
@Monkey:

But dreams weren't the only reason Bellamy was an asshole, the guy is just a prick (or magically turns differently now). In one day, his crew started stabbing other pirates just because they wanted to take their seats at the bar, beat the crap of some other pirates and stole their gold, on top the Zoro/Luffy debacle. Not to mention some guy beat Bellamy in cards and goes to get the money only for Bellamy to stab a knife right in the middle of his hand on top of burning him alive and throwing off the building. That happened in a single day, imagine what he does in a month in the town.
I am not surprised by this since Oda can't keep enemies being enemies no matter what, I wouldn't be surprised at this point if Arlong and Moria become friends of Luffy in the future if they are to meet as well. It's just the way he writes his story, I just don't believe for a second that Bellamy was an asshole only because of hating people who have dreams. By the way, I too think Bellamy has changed but I don't see that he turned a completely new leaf. He knows now that the value or dreams.

I love a well done one, problem is many manga/anime make them usaully pretty badly, tedious, etc.
I haven't had any problem with this tournament, I'm having fun with each chapter.

Hmm? But why'd you ask how Bellamy had changed if you yourself admit he has? That's true though, he was more ruthless back then, but his change makes sense to me. He was overconfident, arrogant, but was then brought down to size by Luffy then Dofla, of course he's had time to reflect on all that. As for the other villains you mentioned…I don't think Arlong would ever be redeemed. He might not have been quite as bad as Hody, but he still had nothing but hate for humans. Moria...I never saw as completely evil to begin with honestly. It seemed like before Kaidou he was more like Luffy anyway. Just my 2 cents.
Law's plan seems "interesting"…
If he had done nothing but let the marines & Aokiji take Ceasar back on Punk Hazard, this would all be over without going to any more islands. Kaidou would've dealt with Doflamingo. Ceasar's locked up. Nothing left to do.
Now, they're here, destroying factories, and fighting Doflamingo themselves, on top of what they've already done.
But what keeps this from seeming totally stupid is that Law lured the marines here himself, by telling them he was going to Green Bit. Now it's just confusing. But confusing can also be interesting, so we'll see what happens.
@Kubihige
Someone had just pointed it out, on the previous page…

Law's plan is to take down Kaidou, not DD. I think the plan involves getting both the Marines and Kaidou angry at DD at the same time.
I'm Not entirely sure how that works, but I'm betting it has some more steps after this one.
Thinking Law's plan involves getting CC captured by the Marines at Green Bit. Even if returning CC is just a distraction to destroy the Smile Factory, it doesn't do any good if Doflamingo and/or Kaidou have CC back in their possession.

I am thinking of this too, since it could also precipitate a confrontation between Kaidou and the Marines. Caesar is not exactly reliable and at the same time knows a lot of stuff about the underworld both Doflamingo and Kaidou are heavily invested in … him being captured is something neither of them would want especially considering 1) how easily he talks when tortured (such as when G5 tortured him to find out a cure to shinokuni) and 2) his skills at creating SAD.
And that's where I see the big gears turning ... it distracts Kaidou's main forces, leaving most of his empire exposed to attack (and we know it's fragile from Caribou's storyline, which shows us that at least one of his favorite islands has a citizenship that is gathering weapons and planning a revolution.) That will no doubt create a scramble in the New World from all other yonkou, New World captains, marines and revolutionaries.
Amazing foreshadowing by Oda, this is from Chap 501 Sanji is reading a list of slaves n it says Dwarves.
