The action scens were nicely put together, the plot twist was obvious, the subplot was unneccesary, and well RDJ is still fun to watch

Just got back too and the plot was meh but I was satisfied with how they did the Mandarin. Robert Downey can't do wrong swore for lord. Tony and that kid though I want that kid in Avengers 2. Loved the post credit scene though

I don't see what's worng with either one. Well maybe the Thor joking does not fit into mythology as Thor (from what I remember) was one god without any sense of humor. But in some Marvel comics (Thor, Journey into Mystery ect… though I'm sure Marvel has since redone its history 1 or 3 times) it showed Thor taunting Loki when they were young (though not about being adopted- it was for Loki wasn't the usual Aesir warrior, he was smaller and skilled with sorcery)

I'll never find the article now a year later, but in Avengers, basically they were upset because he made a joke.

Thor says "My brother isn't all that bad."
And they look at Thor, semi-worried that he might be okay with what Loki is doing and that he might also go nuts and note "Your brother killed fifty guys."
"Well…he's adopted?"

It's just a light moment saying "He's my brother, but we're not BOTH crazy, honest."

Crazies interpreted that as if saying "All adopted children are evil and can never be family and that's a barrier to put in place if you never want to deal with them or treat them like blood and I'm inherantly better than him because of it." Which is of course, not really what Thor said, what he meant, or how anyone sane interpreted the line.

Particularly with the reconciliation at the end.

I was born in 1970 so I remember growing up in 70s when the "family unit" was still not free from the stereotyping from 50/60s (family is Dad-Mom-children (who were automatically thought as birth child unless told differently) ) but my household wasn't typical. Single/divorced mom raising kids was still not as common back then as they are now and my sister was technically my half-sister (she was from 1st marriage, me from the 3rd). I remember hearing the stereotypes of the half-siblings and single moms. I even had classmates say "you don't have a REAL family!"

There are still some movies/shows made that stereotype them. But I never responded like that gal did.
Maybe it was because my sis and I were raised with no distinction (save for birth order lol) by our mom. I was and still am secure as who I am despite what flops (or successful movies/shows) Hollywood wants to make on those stereotypes.

! It's because it totally changes the expectations and tone of the film. The actual bad guy is also nowhere near as compelling as Kingsley was as the pseudo-mandarin, and if you go into the cinema expecting and looking forward to the tone promised by the trailer and who the bad guy is going to be, there's disappointment. Objectively it's a fairly good film, although obviously the swerve only works the first time. Better then Iron Man 2 (which for me was practically saved by Sam Rockwell), but not as good as the original film.

Saw it(Iron Man3):

So as a summer movie I thought it was an absolute blast, it didn't do anything that made me wow, "this film is somehow special", like the avengers(which wasn't just a movie for me but also an event leading up to it) thanks to its 4(3 if you don't count the hulk) film build-up. But yeah it was insane fun.
I liked the humor the most out of all the prior iron man's, I think a strong argument can be made that the action is better than the prior films and I was at least as much invested in tony stark as in the first movie(compared to the total apathy I had in film 2 for the character).
! So my 2 cents about the controversy about the mandarin, I totally understand if people that know the comics that are invested in that character are pretty upset, but for me I enjoyed it. I could avoid all spoilers and when the reveal came I laughed pretty hard and just thought "well done guys(great marketing) that was some fine trolling". It's a bit sad to not see ben kingsley kicking ass as a bad guy again but then there are quite a few other movies where I can see that.
! ! Ideally, he'd have had the rings and been chinese. Rings are science based anyway, you can skip anyone thinking they're magical if need be. Short flashback to Mandarin finding them in a spaceship. You can easily have a chinese villain without being racist, so that's no problem.

! As for the twist… I thought it was fantastic. I really didn't see it coming which is very, very rare these days in movies. Kudos to the marketing team for keeping that one a secret (at least I didn't see any spoilers).
! I guess I can see why comic fans may be pissy about it, but honestly... it worked. It is the cinematic universe that they created, not the comic universe. I think people aren't used to having expectations shattered and movies going a different route than what they expect them too.
! I don't know much about the comics nor really have any interest in most of them. As someone who went to see a movie, I had a blast.
! I also got a kick out of the post-credits scene. I heard someone in the theater say "That was almost as bad as the shawarma one" though.
! I don't know how well this will do though compared to expectations of it because of the whole Mandarin thing. I applaud the guys for the risk and I hope it pays off. It would be a shame to discourage twists that actually lead to being surprised in movies.

I'm pretty surprised how polarising this film was. I have a colleague at work who said it was worse than 2 was. Me personally, I loved it and I think it's the best Marvel film next to Avengers. Yes there were flaws in the story but overall, it's one of the few films that had me rolling on the floor in laughter and on the edge of my seat in excitement throughout. Also best movie twist and one of the most exciting climaxes I've ever seen in a flick.

But this is the "cosmic storyline" currently going on according to Joss Whedon, and the Infinity Gauntlet is THE cosmic artifact.

I'm not saying it has to be in the storyline, but it's quite likely.

Saw the movie with low standard and thought the movie was awesome and funny (I can see why the comic fanatic wouldn't like Mandarin thing). I feel like the director definitely try to mimic the Avenger style of movie telling by adding lots of action pack while sneaking in a few laugh which totally works with Iron Man/Tony Stark. Now hopefully Thor 2 can follow up Iron Man 3.

I saw it at midnight and I gotta say this film needed to be be played more straight. I mean seriously the film felt like an anarchy of cool liners I mean yeah they were funny but it hinders the films dramatic impact. I never really felt the stakes were high especially since the quips became abundant, so much so, it almost felt like an action buddy comedy rather than a emotionally engaging action character piece with a properly balanced humor and warmth. I wasn't expecting the Dark Knight obviously, but I wasn't expecting Ghostbusters either.

It's a fun action comedy, but it wasn't anything great or mind-blowing save for the action parts(which were excellent) and some of the dialogue and action was great but when I was trying to muster up an emotional connection to it–it just felt hollow.

I've it give it a 7/10

! Yeah, thats true. I thought Pearces performance was good, and the fight great, but…"I need more Monays!" just isn't that interesting compared to a conflict of ideology, as would be the case with a terrorist. Really, I'm sick to death of the "We can't risk offending anyone! So we'll make the villain a private businessman, Whos manipulating people from behind the scenes!" trope. The fallback used to be Businessmen and Terrorists of no One Clear Nationality, as bad as they are I'd hate to see them reduced further.

Coming from the guy who directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, it was my wet dream of an Iron Man movie. Also, I felt it rang emotionally true for me, especially concerning

! Everything related to Starks relationship with Pepper, and overcoming his trauma though the discovery that hey, I kick ass with my brain alone
Granted, it wasn't HUGE emotions, but I don't think it was aiming for that. But I do think it has a Heart, and a lot of messages I really appreciated

I get what your saying, but I I just wish they dialed back on the quips a bit. I found the constant humor inter-placed within some of the dramatic moments was really awkward and forced at points. I know this is a lighthearted character and all but man some of the humor had the unfortunate side affect of of cheapening the dramatic aspects of the film for me.

It's weird but to me this film felt more like what a Spider-Man should be, more than Iron Man for me. When I really think about it, Shane is better suited for Spider-man where that's his nook and cranny is to be that quippy even in dour moments than Iron Man.

Let's be honest here… Iron Man would lose to 75% of the villains in Marvel. If he ever crossed Magneto, he'd be finished.

Though Iron Man brings so much to the table (comedy wise) that other Marvel heroes don't.

About the Mandarin twist…

! I thought it was really funny and creative…however like others have said he was being built up to be such an amazing villain, something the Iron Man movies severely lacked. I'm alright with the twist because it took me by such a surprise but it would have been much better had Killian filled the void. He was simply a pathetic scientist with a god complex. His line towards the end "I am the Mandarin" would have been much more epic had he compared to the Mandarin we were being hyped up for.

I forgot what issue, he did come across Magneto, it was during the time Magneto was on the X-Men team or simply their ally, it was one of the ones of Avenger vs M-men fights, . Iron Man revealed he 'demagnetized' his suit so Maggie couldn't affect him … but that turned around to bite Tony as something (forgot what) hit him and made him fall. I remember Magneto commenting on that if his suit wasn't demagnetized he could has saved him from such an embarrassing fall.

Well, I liked it. Very Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for some reason. If that's the last Iron Man film, I'm okay with that. (Especially since he'll probably be in Avengers 2 anyway.)

But yes, ultimately, it would have been stronger had it carried through on its initial promise.

! the twist with the mandarin… well, I knew it in advance among other things... but... he was just so so much more interesting than the actual villain.... and the kind of enemy the films needed.
! Woulda liked to have seen more of the other suits too. Ah well.

Also the post-credits bit was great. It wasn't "Lets go have shwarma" great, but it was nice. Make sure you stick around for it.

! The Mandarin twist was perfect! Seriously, he's "Iron Man's greatest foe" so no one would expect it, but he also sucks so I doubt anyone really gave that much of a shit. When I heard there was a really weird surprise about him, I thought he was going to be an alien or something, lol.
! My only complaint was when the credits sequence made me remember Iron Man 2 exists.

Just saw it. Felt more comic-booky than the other two with some of the sillier action sequences, but hey, I'm fine with that. RDJ as Tony Stark is still the most perfect fit of actor and character in the realm of comic adaptations, so it was great.

In keeping with the other two films, it's pretty amazing how little of the film features Tony Stark actually in the Ironman suit.

I liked this one better than Iron man 1or 2.

! I do not have the comic book experience that most of you have so i wasn't really attached to Mandarin. I did my wiki research before hand and he seemed pretty OP to be a simple terrorist. Anyway don't think changing the villain from a terrorist "punishing" america for it's crimes to a man using a fake terrorist to cover up his real agenda was somehow a safer move. I don't think actual terrorist are that complicated for one, their motives are simple their methods illogical, their tactics ineffective unless they have the power to massacre millions at once but if that were the case they wouldn't be just terrorist. I think the idea that terrorism can simply be manufactured to suit the needs of whoever has enough money speaks well to this generation of the Iraq war. And I thought Killian was a strong enough force with a strong enough back up group to serve as a better threat to Iron Man than either of the last two villains by a long shot.
! The twist aside I just thought it was really well written, shot, acted, and paced. All of Iron Man films are but I thought this was the movie that I walked out feeling the most satisfied with.

Iron Man's never had any interesting villains in the comics, but the Mandarin had so much potential based on how they portrayed him in the trailers.
But I guess that's why you can never trust movie trailers.

[Hide]I would've much prefered it to have been a straight forward the mandarin attacks stark and he travels to china and after some strjggles charges his zany doom fortress just blasting it to pieces. ! I thought Guy Pierce did fine. Not as threatening and compelling as Ben Kingsly sure but he was threatening and fun enough. More importantly, if they switched, the twist wouldn't have worked nearly as well as it did since it was so heavily based on us thinking Ben Kingsly was a badass.
