Is anyone else not really seeing too much of a connection between Hody and M.Jackson?
I was going to say that. I loled when I saw it.

One of the Elder Stars is Gorbachev?!
I thought that one was the most obvious. Personally, i even think that the Five Elders are supposed to represent the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Pretty sure Killer would be inspired by Jason given his mask. Most of those seem pretty cool and fairly likely though. Also, we know Sanji is modeled after Steve Buscemi as he appeared in the movie resevoir dogs, but I guess you can't expect those types of things to be perfect
We know this? Bcause yeah I really doubt the crap out of that.
1. Everyone in Reservoir Dogs had the same outfit.
2. Steve Buscemi is a ratfaced brunette, normal looking blonde guy? What?

Everything on top of Hody's head is actually pretty Jackson esque. Nothing else though.
The jerri-curl plus that 70's cap are stuff that are Jacksonish.
Vol. 68
D: Oda-sensei, hello. In regards to Sanji, I feel that he looks like Leonardo DiCaprio-san from the western movie, "Romeo and Juliet". My friends say I'm dead wrong. Is Sanji's appearance based on someone in particular?? P.N. Noel
O: People used to guess DiCaprio a lot, in the past. But the truth is that Sanji has a much more unusual model. I might not go as far as to say "model", but I hoped to have a bit of this person's vibes come through. It's Steve Buscemi, as he appeared in the movie "Reservoir Dogs". Cool, huh? Someone at Bandai was the only one to guess correctly, a while back.
Strange but true. From Volume 68's SBS: http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/SBS_Volume_68

That doesn't explain the Gandhi guy though. Even the Gorbachev birthmark guy looks more British otherwise. I think they're just a amalgam of famous leader things.

Yep, we do. Oda said it on the SBS of volume 68

Well, i was going more for the shoalin monk thing since it is one of the most known things for people not interested in China otherwise.
Actually Steve Buscemi does resemble Sanji in his latest movie. Somehow…:wassat:
Others have pointed out my source, but I'm going to add that I'd never say we KNOW something like this without direct confirmation from Oda

Nah, Oda said that it is based on Steve Buscemi in Reservoir Dogs

Yeah, I guess Oda didn't travel back in time after watching a 2013's movie :D
Just wanted to point out that Steve Buscemi isn't THAT far off from Sanji, even if he looked like a rat on crack in reservoir dogs.

I couldn't help but think of this guy while reading this week's chapter

“The “pirate mercenary” Hildeen”
In Japanese ハイルディン (hairudin) maybe inspired by Hayreddin Barbarossa ハイレッディン(haireddin)?
Yes, it is. I believe I used that name in my summary, since it was obviously based on the infamous pirate, Red Beard.
He's spelled ハイルディーン in Japanese often.
I think the connection Zatoichi - purple could come from this

!
But yours is obviously much more likely.

Does that make Caribou-> Dorothy?
So I found this
It's pretty neat even if some of them don't make sense
Does anyone know how is Zatoichi's attitude towards the government? I mean, in the TV series or the movies. I'm wondering about it because Fujitora doesn't look like a guy for the absolute justice. He even forget the name of the island Green Bit, instead he is worried about protecting innocent people… In the reviews he use to be fighting Yakusa gangs... Not that the character should have to be the same than Zatoichi but, I'm just curious.

Anybody knows a good place to watch the films that were used as inspiration for the admirals? I'm having a difficult time trying to find the 1983 Detective Story Aokiji film

Don't be too harsh on the guy (disclaimer: may not realy be a guy, I have no idea) :P
Also wasn't there a picture of that whch would actualy be unobstructed ? I can barely see it at all.

Ops big fail of mine..
I dont know if this has been stated before, But during a Theater History class I attended, I learned about a very famous pantomime (silent) Clown by the name of George Laffitte Fox. Now I know that Laffitte is the name of a famous pirate, but I believe that Oda was also inspired by this pantomime clown. Also considering his introduction sneaking silently into the shichibukai
!
!
From what we saw of Diamante yet, he reminds me strongly of Steven Tyler from Aerosmith (especially the mouth part).
What do you guys think?
Along with some various other people, I'm finally thinking that Donflamingo's face at least is based on Bono of U2 during his early 90's phase as "the Fly".
Mostly it was a combo of the glasses and the chin that had me thinking!
Close enough :D
I'm kind of curious and kind of afraid to find out what precisely inspired Oda to create Abdulah and Jeet.
And how exactly this will go down in the US and Arabic editions.

They are based on US wrestlers. Aohige made a post about it a couple of pages ago.
Anyway, a friend of mine told me that Tank Lepanto's design was probably based on Zangief
I have never been into Street Fighter so I didn't make the connection right away, but I guess Lepanto's hair style and current attire do make him look like Zangief. All he lacks is the manly chest hair.

That's actualy reassuring.
But the latter question still remains.

I don't think it'll be a problem. To my knowledge, no character/name had to be editted when being translated and released in a certain area.

Unless that was a hoax or something.

That's just old man Bono, gotta go with pics circa 90-93.
This pic in particular made my mind go to it.
Pretty sure Killer would be inspired by Jason given his mask.
Killer is inspired by Daft Punk obviously.
Killer's helmet has been noted to bare resemblance to the French musician Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo's helmet from Daft Punk. Daft Punk was made famous in Japan by their animated film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, during this time the duo were wearing outfits made up to make them look like robots.
I really see no resemblance between killer's mask and that mask to be completely honest

Resembles the Daft Punk helmet/mask more so than Jason's. I see little to no connection with the iconic hockey mask aside from the holes.

I guess, but it doesn't really look like either now that I took another look at it

I wouldn't worry. Abdullah (with the red flag name) is the less "ethnic" of the two, and Jeet is actually an Indian stereotype- not Arabic. And the turban-wearing, hook-nosed, scimitar-licking image is no worse than Disney's stereotypes in Aladdin (which was Middle Eastern, of course). And that's only received a small amount of editing over the years (they eliminated the line in the opening song: "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face- it's barbaric, but hey, it's home!")
And of course they're based on wrestlers in the first place.
