One Piece 703: Waiting Room

It is a Japanese thing. I don't know if it has any basis in reality, but they think that when someone gets aroused, the blood rushes to their head (weird huh. my blood rushes somewhere else) which results in a nosebleed. You see this phenomenon in many different manga/anime series, and my students even make fun of those who get nosebleeds in class, saying that they must have been thinking about something sexy.
But yeah. Seems completely alien to the western reader.

Personally, I agree with you. Making it an actual plot point in FI was the absolute logical limit of the gag, and it's completely worn out its welcome. It makes Sanji an even more pathetic and terrible character than he already is.

I was aware that other manga's use it as well, but not that it is ingrained in Japanese culture to this extent. Must be horrible for people who have them regularly…especially females.

Yeah, no. Franky doesn't enter. He says that the grandness of the colosseum almost makes him want to, but then he says that Luffy has to head in via the entrance over there at the registry (the implication being "…a different entrance than me").

Both of your other examples continue to be funny/well-used because they're character traits that can be milked and enhanced via surround characters' reactions, steady comedic progression (Zoro went from merely having a bad sense of direction to literally walking in the opposite direction that someone was pointing), and variation (Usopp's myriad of hypochondriac conditions). There's nowhere creative you can go with "hey, let's have blood come out of Sanji's nose!" except to actually make it threaten his life… which it did. And we all breathed a sigh of annoyed relief, because we thought that's be the end of it.

Anyway, of course it's a matter of opinion in the end. I get that. If you find it funny, well then it's your lucky day, because the gag ain't going anywhere.

Amazing chapter, really good all round. Sanji's nosebleed was the first time I laughed out loud reading One Piece in a while. Looking forward to see where this tournament goes, arc's shaping up well

I still find those amusing for the most part, especially with Zoro, but Sanji"s gag was taken too far when it became a plot point and its basically just annoying now. Chopper not knowing who the real strawhats were also annoyed the hell out of me.

Anyway Chapter wasn't bad. I hate to admit this but the weird coincidence of main character named Lucy, and searching for fairies reminds me of Fairytail. But Lucy was much more badass here in this manga.

1 - So Luffy wants a fruit after all huh? Seems like some of you guys were wrong thinking he wouldn't care about it. Even though it's more of 'too strong ability get in wrong hands' than memento, but still :P That makes Sanji or Coby eating a fruit more likely… or Ussopps plant? :P

2 - Woah, Sanji gonna get used! But it seems he wouldn't care about being used, as long as it is by a pretty woman haha. Reminds me of Misfits episode s04e04 - where an Actress got a power to manipulate man and they would kill the previous lover. If she asks to kill her old lover then it's pretty similar :P

3 - Funny Toy Soldier for New Nakama!!! I wonder if it was already suggested, probably yes xD (im writing response while reading and Im not reading other posts to not spoil myself and write it faster, cause there's already 4 pages haha)

4 - Seems like people are nicely decieved by Luffy's disguise :) Maybe my prediction from last chapter will be true, it was smth like " Luffy will fight in disguise, noone will recognize him, but later on his diguise will somehow be torn apart (or he will remove it himself?) and everyone will be in shock :P

5 - Lucy? Lol isn't that a girls name? xD He could say Lucci! That would make some of guys prediction to be true haha, but in a bit different way :P

7 - Ow so someone already saw through awesome disguise of Luffy? Too bad xD

I think Oda is going to dedicate this Tournament to all previous Shounen tournaments. DBZ has already been represented. FT is represented with Luffy's name (oda can't incorp it any other way because it ended just few weeks ago) Oda is a fan of FT i am sure. Yu Yu Hakusho is up next. The participants being able to do what they want is a sign that Lucy is going to take them all out. Yu Yu Hakusho had something very similar to this happen.

What I do like about this,is that it seems that tournament isn't the penultimate thing going on in this arc,as there are still tons of subplots going on.

If this arc avoids being becoming an actual tournament arc,then everything,tourney included,is gold in my book.

I'm in the nosebleeds are funny camp but like any jokes they can be overused. It served it's point with Violet, I'm guessing Sanji's tolerance has increased so she has to be completely stunning for it to work. Violet's established as a beauty so it'll lie fallow.
What I loved about Violet were how she was trying to vamp Sanji and expecting some resistance, at least.

The other character point joke I loved was Franky being expected to keep Luffy even slightly on track but instead pretty much egging him on. He's still as impulsive and sentimental as his first appearance & that's great. Especially after he attacked Baby 5 and Buffalo pretty much just because.

The saying should be changed to 'no plan survives contact with Luffy' as Law is finding out. Dofla seems to be right on the money so far, but looking forward to that getting derailed.

wasnt the behaviour of that toy soldier pretty strange towards luffy,i think he knew abt luffy and gang from the time they entered, remember there was a toy soldier who recognised luffy at start(one whose hand was bitten by the dog).well many questions there and even that girl violet was quite a strange character she was actually nice towards sanji and then after trusting sanji she said she wanted him to kill a man.

I'm hoping it's a special case since in this case, the girl was the one who was so forward with affection of the romantic kind. If not then I'm rolling my eyes as well. What is a running "gag" that works well is Sanji's love of beautiful women, the nosebleeds just don't work as well as that.

Also I'm glad Luffy "cares" about the mera mera no mi, but it seems he's not totally invested to the extent of throwing away the mission.

I'll admit, I didn't think Luffy would care about the fruit but I guess I both overestimated and underestimated him. The only downside of this is were going to be subjected to the Sanji will eat the fruit posts for the rest of the week. Sigh, another week I won't be visiting the thread regularly.

It was good to see a hint that the other strawhats can refuse to eat the fruit and it also serves as a reminder that people in the One Piece world value the ability to swim(especially since they spend most of their time on the sea). Its a nice callback to when no one wanted to eat the bara bara fruit since they valued that ability to swim.

The only person I can see agreeing to eat it is Ussop. Nami has no use for it and all the others have devil fruits.

Is it just me or does the dynamic between Luffy and Franky interesting. I don't why but maybe its because its different. This is the first time the two of them have been alone right? Its good to see that he is gaining more screen time, my dislike toward him is waning.

Sanji is kind of disappointing, when we first met him he was smooth with the ladies and they seemed to also reciprocate his feelings now he gets hugged by a girl and he's bleeding all over himself. Dude how is that supposed to be attractive to a woman, though I do think he's seen through her lies.He might act like an idiot but he is a really perceptive guy.

Oh and 3C is Luffy's statement more of a,"I already have a fruit, so I don't need another one," or a "I can't eat the fruit because you can't eat two fruits"?

At this point I think it'd be a missed opportunity on Oda's part, you already went out of your way to have Luffy ask one of his crewmates.

Might as well go the extra mile and use this to boost Sanji's Fire.
It'd be weird if Sanji who is already the Crew's designated fire user was never asked
or even referred to when considering giving it to a member.

I personally wouldn't buy it.

I love Franky's role in this arc… Finally he gets something done (on-screen, that is)... Stopping Luffy from doing stupid things is hard work.

There are all sorts of tricks you can do with the numbers, and a lot of the birthdays are indeed what they are for a reason.
3 = mi or san
2 = ni or futa or ji 32 = sanji

Mera doesn't really work though.

At this point I think Sanji needs to eat the fruit. I never thought I would say this, but he is now my least favorite crew member. His gags are really getting annoying now and imo his character needs saving. Some of you guys are going to disagree with me but oh well.

Sanji will get seriously damaged in thic arc, the only way to save Sanji will be that he eat the devil fruit. Zoro will learn how to cut fire so he can "own" Sanji. In the future Sanji will fight with Marco (and it will be a fight like first commander vs second commander, Phoenix vs Fire). Sanji now uses sky walk so he don't need really to swin after Jimbei will join (Jimbei will save all the devil fruit users who fall in water). If Jimbei joins Sanji needs a STRONGER power up so he will not become less powerful that Jimbei (because Sanji is in the Monster trio). That maybe a way to explain why Sanji can get the fruit, but i really think that the one who will get it is Coby!!!!!!!!!!

Great chapter in my opinion. The colorspread was decent, not one of the better ones though.
So much for Luffy not caring about the fruit… I'm glad my prediction of him caring turned out to be true.
Lucy entering the tournament dressed as Master Roshi was just great, as was him trashing that big tournament champion. Luffy showed them who's boss
Looks like Franky with act as coach of some sort. Also we get to rule him out as a potential mera mera no mi user. Which means one more week with the Sanji eating the fruit nonsense. "sigh"

Now, as a Sanji fanboy, I approve of his section in this chapter. It only took 703 chapters, but he did it. He got a kiss from a female... While I'm not too bothered about him falling into her obvious trap, he should at least understand it eventually. Not sure what the fuss about his nosebleed is all about. As long as he doesn't fall back to fishman island level nosebleeds, I'm not bothered about it.

The toy guy was interested, no clue what his role in this arc will be.

And yes, it has to be said, Violet for next nakama :happy: (and Sanji's girlfriend :ninja:)

Look closely, its diguised as derby hat. At least the top of it, underneath it seems to be a strawhat… but well it's partialy disguised so it should be enough :P

Hey! I was reading about it recently and heard many theories, one was that it's just a gag in mangas and doesn't really have any connection with reality, and the other was that the blood from the head rushes down and since asians (apparently) have weak nostrals the blood comes out of their noses :)
