Was their certainty that Lucas was going to make a new trilogy?
Disney's Star Wars
-
-
@Monkey:
i dont understand how people are excited, its like hearing that the rolling stones are making a new album in 2012
It's a combination of things. I don't really care for a new Star Wars film, but as others are saying, they'd love a Thrawn trilogy or something good.
In my eyes, it means far more Star Wars merchandise, more theme park stuff with them, and possibly more funds going to games.
-
Cause Disney buying Marvel totally led to Avengers being a terrible movie.
-
All I want is a movie verison of the Thrawn trilogy books for Episode 7, 8, and 9.
-
Disney set to buy Warner Bros. next.
You heard it here first.

Mortal Kombat theme park!
OH MY GOD! I'm gonna go to prison for jumping the first Stryker character I see in the park!

This, right here.
And even if the Star Wars movie franchise doesn't blossom to extraordinary heights of awesomeness the way the Marvel Movieverse did in Disney's hands… It's still most likely better off there than under Lucas' direct control.
-
Star Wars can't get any worse than it already had in the hands of Lucas so it could only go up from here. Also no more fiddling of the original by Lucas with his stupid CGI and Greedo shot first bullshit.
-
It amazes me that Disney has far more potential to release an uncut version of the Star Wars trilogy. Disney, the company that apparently censors and lightens everything, is probably more than willing to allow Han Solo to shoot first than Lucas had.
-

I already asked this question.
But.
Why?
When they came out 25 years ago and there was nothing else they were the logical extension of the series… and for 25 years people have been touting them as the official sequels. Most of the tie-ins have built off the characters introduced since then. But aside from introducing Mara Jade and Thrawn himself being interesting, what about that trilogy makes people think it'd be so perfect for the big screen for THREE movies? It's a lot of talking and fussing about clones (already dealt with in the prequels and tv show at length) and a lot of looking for a missing battle fleet, without any major action sequences and that never does much with a pretty weak climax.
Its a nice smart tale that was truthful to the characters and the politics that would have followed the empire's collapse, and it introed a couple major characters... 25 years ago. But its been built upon and followed up, explored, and moved on from since. Announce you're making a part 7 in the year 1995 when the original cast can still sort of play the parts, (the books took place 5 years later... that crew 10 years later would have been acceptable) I'm there.
But its not the inherant instinctual place to go next now, especially not with Luke Leia and Han all aged 40 years. Episodes 1-3 weren't the story of that group of characters (really shouldn't have been about Vader at all) why should 7-9 try to be about that group?
Set it at least 40 years later, if not 400, and do something different.
I suppose the ideas of Thrawn can be adapted and used for a new cast, (Not Luke and Han and Chewie) but as it stands they really don't work and no one wants to see those iconic characters recast. (It's one thing to cast a 40 years younger guy for a prequel, like Obi Wan or Bilbo... it's another to recast for someone at the same age.)

Disney also notoriously edits their animated movie (though they do at least have the courtesy to put somewhat unedited theatrical versions on their home releases).
-
Nooooo, only George Lucas is Star Wars!
-

Yes, but they probably won't force needless edits that completely alter the context of important scenes to satisfy their own egos.

They… really don't. They throw in an optional new song on 10th anniversary re-releases in a couple spots.
They won't release Song of the South sure... 5 seconds of Fantasia is racially sensitive now... and occasional porn hidden in the backgrounds by bored artists gets recalled... but they don't edit their own stuff much.
They might reshape a story a ton when making a movie in the first place, but... they don't edit their own stuff a whole lot.
-
Indiana Jones might now be allowed to die.

I was mostly talking about the inserted song which pissed a lot of people off. Their digital recoloring also sometimes makes things look a little too bright.

Lucas, why did you sell out? Lucas…why?
-
This post is deleted!
-
So…who would you guys like to direct the new movies? I've heard Whedon mentioned a few times already. I like that idea. Who else sound good? Jackson? Abrams? Yates? Snyder? Bird? Shane Black (I have a lot of faith in this guy)? The Wachowshi's? These are just the first names to come to mind.
Who would be the worst caste scenario? Emmerich?
-
So ol' Lucas is prostituting his own creation even more, instead of letting it die through a prostitution of toys/merchandising/cartoons. live action shows. Sign me up!
Goddamn why can't old popular franchises just die? I mean next thing you know Toriyama will announce someone else will continue DB or something.
-
For yrs I been dying for someone to buy LucasFilm for a while and make new star wars movies now its finally going to happen. I like a couple of the KOTOR series but it does say episode 7 o that means a sequel, and if they are going to adapt a book(s) to do it then they should do first one that comes recent too episode 6, I think that would be Heir to the Empire though
-
I think this is the first time I heard of a buyout that I actually think is a good idea. Anyway, for the new film, I hope they just decide to make a new story set in the same universe rather than trying to focus on the same ones we already know.
When do we get the Marvel/Star Wars crossover? :ninja:
Theres already fanart:ninja:
-
Lucas, why did you sell out? Lucas…why?
Four billion dollars in cash and stock options (which may well make him one of Disney's largest individual shareholders) and he probably retains some degree of control over his individual properties.
Anyway, that supposed 2015 release date for Justice League just became infinitely funnier.
-
Fox retains the rights to old Star Wars material: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/10/30/fox-retain-rights-to-all-existing-star-wars-films/
So how many huge movies are coming out in 2015 now? Avengers, Justice League, Star Wars and Avatar. Anything else?
-
Lucas, why did you sell out? Lucas…why?
He already sold out when he made the SW prequels and that other Indiana Jones movie.
-
I hope Double Fine pitch to disney for a new monkey island game

I hope etc etc X -Wing vs TIE Fighter, Day of the Tentacle etc etc -

Disney is slowly but surely taking over the world.

Found this:
_Disney Interactive has moved away from console development recently and the first response from Disney chairman and CEO Robert A. Iger about making new Star Wars games was the following: ‘We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console.’
‘We'll look opportunistically at console, most likely in licensing rather than publishing, but we think that given the nature of these characters and how well known they are, and the storytelling, that they lend themselves quite nicely, as they've already demonstrated to the other platforms.’_
Sounds promising as long as they don't go crazy over the licensing fees. -
special preview of star wars episode 7
!
! STAR WARS EPISODE VII: REVENGE OF THE GROOVEHonestly people it's not like Disney can dig a deeper hole than the one Star Wars is currently in
-
What the hell is this nonsense about Star Wars being in a hole? Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the current comics are some of the best things to come out of the franchise in years.
-
Fuck I forgot about clone wars
then again i haven't turned on my tv for actual television since…May??
-
I wonder what an aged Mark Hamil , Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford would look like playing the same characters they played 28 something years ago.
Now I doubt they'll get the old cast again, they'll most likely recast. But makes you wonder. I feel they should go the Korra route, and skip several years into the future and go with new characters all together and have old characters in some kind of cameo.
-
I definitely did a double take when I saw this news. Of course, every form of media I read is ablaze with it. Generally, I am ok with this, other than my fear that Disney will eventually own every bit of popular entertainment.
I would LOVE to see something about Thrawn in the new movies. But having that actually be the next movie trilogy, probably not the best idea. As long as they don't actually screw up the current EU universe with what they create, I look forward to it.
But if they even just mentioned Thrawn's name I'd be like, /fangasm
-
Hoooooly freaking crap!Hooooooooooly freaking heeeeelll!!Just imagine:Star Wars/Avengers crossover. No, it won't happen, but…This was crazy news.Seventh movieeee!
-
George Lucas shouldn't have done this, I mean for a guy who get on yacking about Star Wars was a story with a definitive "beginning, middle and end" or it being really being ''TRAGEDY OF DARTH VADER!'' he sure is going against his word doing this. I mean before this, regardless of all the bashing Lucas got I at least respected him for his integrity to end his story, and not let it become whored out by corporations through constant reboots, movies(though again Lucas has been whoring his own creation out for quite a while anyway)
Now I have very little respect for him as a storyteller now.

They might as well go ahead and buy Squaresoft so they can start cranking out Kingdom Hearts: Marvel Edition, Kingdom Hearts: Star Wars Edition, and Kingdom Hearts: Kitchen Sink Edition.
Though I really just want to see a Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island crossover.

I think you missed the part where they gave him 4 billion dollars.
-
If the numbers I'm looking at are right, Lucas now owns forty times as many shares of Disney Corporation as Robert Iger does.
Yep, he's the second largest shareholder after the Jobs estate though it only amounts to about 2% of the company.
-
Yeah, don't forget this part. with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing.
-
Still waiting for Disney to buy Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
Then their quest for world domination will be complete!
MWAHAHA! -
Hey, wait, does Spielberg get a cut of this? He made that bet with Lucas after all and is entitled to 2.5% of the revenue from Star Wars.
-
I was mostly talking about the inserted song which pissed a lot of people off. Their digital recoloring also sometimes makes things look a little too bright.
The new songs always have the option of watching the original movie on them.
The digital coloring brings things back to their proper vibrancy saturation. Just because you've gotten used to the dull faded copies based of prints that degraded for decades doesn't mean that's how they were supposed to look originally.
-
I love how people are freaking out and saying shit like, "They're gonna make Star Wars G-rated!"
Saying Disney is going to clean and censor Star Wars is like saying someone is going to give a bar of soap a bath. That shit is already censored and clean beyond all belief. All of the Star Wars movies are cleaner than most Disney movies for fucks sake.

You can always tell who hasn't watched Clone Wars.
Anyway, first Marvel, then Lucasfilm. Who's next?
Seeing as how they have existing contracts with Marvel and Lucasfilm as well as an extensive library of marketable characters, my gut feeling is that it'll be Hasbro.
-

Yes. You are correct. I haven't seen Clone Wars (unless you're referring to the second movie in the Star Wars trilogy Clone Wars). I was referring to the classic three and the three prequels.
-

Or they could write the story with those characters as age appropriate.
-
Hmm I wonder if it is possible to get Hamil, Fisher, and Harrison back. I figured Harrison might be the most challenging and expensive, but then again Disney has plenty of monetary resources to hire him (even after dropping 4 billion+ on Lucas).
-
Harrison would be a pain in the ass to get, I'm sure. Hamil and Fisher would probably be willing to do a voice acting job if the next film were animated. shrug Otherwise, it'd have to be a movie where Luke, Leia, and Han were much older.

Hasbro isn't a bad guess. I can see that.
