Eh…I'm still not sold yet. I'm not really into the humor. I saw the udder/tits joke coming a mile away and it wasn't funny and Hachiken being worked to death is already getting old. My one hope right now is a romantic plotline involving Mikage.

Ah, I f***ing love Rorschach, there are few characters in American comics (or even comics in general) that I like more.
Sure, those jokes are expected, but they're still funny. I like jokes like that.

Q was awesome in the JLU animated series. I was sad that he hardly did anything in season 3. He was also cool in 52 and his death was genuinely tragic, and it's so rare for death's in Marvel or DC to be genuinely moving, because you know in American comics a character can just come back a year later. Well first of all Vic isn't back yet, Renee is filling his boots, which is fine by me, Renee is cool. I'm still not convinced he won't be back, but I don't think it'll be for a while.
This doesn't have anything to do with manga though, sorry.
Okay, so I finally got around to reading the first three chapters of this series.
Not bad, so far. The story is original, it's got good humor, and some really interesting facts even if you're not really into farming and agriculture (I most certainly am not). One thing though is I think Arakawa really does need to give some more development for these characters. I mean, we still don't know why Hachiken moved from the city to an agricultural school in the first place. But perhaps Arakawa's planning on answering that soon.
So yeah, it's pretty interesting so far and I'll continue to read it.
Oh yeah, and I got a kick out of the Rorschach cow.
Er…I wish I liked this so far. Ill give it a few more weeks at least.
This chapter is another miss for me. I'm trying really hard to like this manga, but it just hasn't offered me anything yet. I know there has only been four chapters, but there is no real story and the humor isn't to my tastes.

I'm enjoying the series, its lighthearted and clearly a way for Arakawa to take a breather from Fullmetal Alchemist.
I'm enjoying it for what it is, the humour's been making me smile mostly due to all the holstein club stuff. Really liked that double page spread this chapter, Arakawa definitely hasn't lost it.

Stop reading. Seriously. You're wasting your time.
If you don't like it, then you don't like it. It's not going to become something that it's not.
Hm, honestly after devoting the past decade to FMA, I can forgive Arakawa for taking things slowly with this particular series. The beginning has no where near the amount of energy as FMA established, and then kept throughout, but is that really all that surprising given the fact that it's a slice of life series? Besides, even when Arakawa is decompressing she's still far more competent of a writer than most of her peers.
I really wish people understood the main point about this series: Arakawa is drawing from her own childhood by writing this series. Although modernized, you have to remember that she grew up on a farm in Hokkaido, so this series is her world. Most of you just want to be entertained… okay, fine. I actually like the unique idea of learning something in a Manga.
It has an Armstrong in it. Can't go wrong with that.
Chapter 5 is out. Looks like we might be getting a back story next chapter.

This. I'm enjoying it aswell.
Still wondering what the actual title of the comic actually means. The Silver Spoon award in the cafeteria makes me think of the Silver Spoon competition in schools, farms, and business cafeterias for best food and method of cooking, but then again, there's also a Horse Racing award called the Silver Spoon based on a successful race horse back in the 50s.(Coincidentally was shown at the Cleveland Museum with Balto a couple months back(not the actual body of course))
Chapter 6 and still no career choice, and a bit more of why he came to the school in the first place.
He have a dark past as a Delinquent.

Could also be a reference to the whole "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" which is what I first thought of when I saw the title.
Hah ha, I love how they did up the Colonel Sanders dummy at the end (by the way, what is it with Japan and the Colonel? This is like the fourth time I've seen a Sanders doll being shown in a somewhat ominous light in animanga land.)
kenta-kun! (from higurashi)
i dunno, i think they just love chicken
Hehe…really the last chapter. Pork Bowl!!... hehe
After FMA, a total comedy? Well, Arakawa grew up in a dairy farm, so the connection is really obvious. And the first chapter impressed me, especially the part where he's tutoring farm boys who can't do basic math and then overhears the conversation from biotech students. LOL. And I understood all of the biotech stuff.
–-They got some of the terms wrong, maybe that's a translation error (supposed to be transferring a methyl group in an enzyme), but very, very few people would notice it.
Anyway, awesome manga. I sometimes forget that farming traditionally involves heavy physical labor, and often think of fat American farmers who ride tractors and other machines all day.
Edit: Okay, so the theme is: city boy gets pwned by farm life in every way possible.
Anyone Still Reading this?Last 2 chapters were really fun.I love how a group of friend lost members one by one like it happens in every other manga but for funny reasons :D
This series is a wonderful slice of life and shows Arakawa can operate in more than one spectrum. Is anybody besides me actually following it?

To those who haven't, please give it a try and be clear that it's a slow paced slice of life, but by god if it isn't one of the best I've read.
HACHIKEN!!!…Damn...he was so close to that fated date too. :(
HACHIKEN!!!…Damn...he was so close to that fated date too. :(
So true :(
Loved how dense Mikage was to the whole thing and how she reacted!
Next couple of chapters its going to be revealed that he can't do many physical stuff because of a disease. This manga will become sad.
Wait…isn't it just fatigue? oh..nvm. XD
Poor Hachiken, he will never get a break. Got me by surprised there in the last page :(
But Mikage, finally she's aware of his feelings for her.
Yeah, I expect it more to be fatigue taking it's tool, this series is too calm paced to go into drama bomb mode.
It would be really funny if Chestnut visits him at the hospital and kicks him awake. XD
My favorite animal character next to the cute vice president. XD
New chapters out
! Daddy being a gigantic asshole doesn't even begin to cover it.
Sorry to bump this one but if someone is intersted in read here it his a good place http://manga.redhawkscans.com/reader/series/silver_spoon/ Not from the most recent chapter but is enough reason why i'm bumping this
Didn't know she had gotten a new series, I'll have to check it out.
I'm genuinely surprised to see this thread being completely forgotten; especially now that the anime is airing.
Anyway, I watched the anime's first episode and got instantly interested in the manga. Finished reading it a few minutes ago. Love it.
Now let's see if there will be other people posting, otherwise it wouldn't make much sense to post my own detailed opinion about it…
It's too down-to-earth to get a huge fan following like Attack on Titan and the like. (although from what I understand the manga sells really well.) But I regularly read it, planning to check out the anime when I have time.
I also marathoned the manga recently and fell in love with it. It's just got such a loveable cast of characters.

Well I don't know about others but reading the manga I'm just too chilled to really want to discuss anything about it.
To me there is also not much to discuss about it, it just is. The "fish out of the water" story itself isn't really excitement inducing and chapters don't feel like they end on cliffhangers that make me want to know what happens next. It's more about how everything comes together very nicely and generally creates an interesting atmosphere. The information about agriculture is interesting and generally with how normal everything is all the problems feel super relatable.

That's true as well. While usually a lot happens in the story, its discussion potential isn't too great. It's your everyday slice of life story, but at its very best. And given the sales numbers Japan agrees with me.
I never would've guessed that one day I'd be captivated by a story about agriculture. More so, I even ordered the first three volumes and plan to get the rest soon. That's Arakawa-sensei for you.

Readership scale wise, Silver Spoon is no less than Shingeki no Kyojin.
In fact, it reached the same milestone like five times faster than SnK, not to mention having a much bigger readership base due to the magazine being mainstream by comparison.
However, that's in Japan - English fandom largely ignored this manga for a long time.
You know, sort of like ignoring Kingdom and Terraformars despite their popularity.
I had the impression it is popular by English readers too. It is by the author of FMA after all. I rather think that Darthathma is right, a lot of people read and enjoy it but don't necessary feel the interest to discuss about bacon and sausages.
I wonder if the first volumes were well received in France too. The critics were very good and the anime will probably help the serie here too.
i have recently picked up this manga and immensely enjoying it…it has a type of feel good vibe and pleasantness that i can't feel in any other manga i am currently following..
Watching all those cute and heartwarming scenes in animated form is even better than only reading them. Sadly I don't expect the BDs to sell too well but as long as the manga keeps piling up such exceptional sales numbers, all is right with the world.
I want to make pizza.
Just read the new chapter of the manga
! Damn, Hachiken brother as a hot wife! It was so funny watching her boobs sucking Hachiken and vice-president(Hachiken Dog) !
Uhmm…So Silver Spoon is getting a live action adaption!
Obviously, the manga is doing extremely well, with an anime and live-action adaptation and widespread popularity, but reading the last few chapters, has Arakawa given any sense of how long she's planning on writing it? I know she's got another series ongoing, and if necessary, she could really wrap most of the plot threads up pretty quickly, especially with as much movement as there's been in the last few chapters.
