Okay episode overall, but art needs to improve at some places

@Galaxy:
The thing is, 1 chapter pacing is Toei's specialty. Dragon Ball Z was a horribly paced mess with episodes ranging from 1 chapter to less than 1 chapter an episode. I've been hoping for them to up the pace for years, but I don't see it happening until the manga finishes. It's a shame though, because the next arc is absolutely amazing.
Actually, I wouldn't mind 1 chapter pacing for the next arc. basically every chapter has been interesting, save for one of the slime ones
-
People really like this? The pacing is so bad, I watched it and it just doesn't work. It's so so sloooooooooooow.

That would be how you make it less interesting. Yeah, it's interesting when we read it once a week, but that only takes up 5 minutes of our time. One chapter's worth of information taking up 22 minutes is a lot worse imo.
-
It looked like shit on the preview and it looks like shit. That was AWFUL. Haki scene was LAME and i just can't forgive them that scene. Music was perfect but thats all. No epicness, no shivers on my back, no awesome animation. What a piece of crap.
-
Yea I rarely post here, but the haki scene was not good at all. I always liked the burst of haki not the something that looks like a submarine's echo location. They also missed the foaming at the mouth. That haki burst looked tame.
-
a wonderful episode and i think it was quiet good art of Deguchi this time, well at least on a few places…Jinbe and Zeos lines were the best on this whole episode xD The music was also good and i am thrilled on next week =3
-
Luffy pushing Sanji & Zoro didn't even set anything off with me, but that cheap animation for the two dimensional running fishmen and haki blast was terrible. Is the budget for each episode that low, or is Toei just being cheap? Come on now….
Another thing I noticed is that the Kraken hasn't even appeared yet. If I recall, in the manga he's already chillin on the wall before the princes even arrive. How are they going to have him just pop up out of the blue?
-
Luffy pushing away Zoro and Sanji make him looks like an emo little bitch. And if you like this, then you like this kind of character. But in NOWAY this is Luffy's character. Luffy isnt' a little bitch. You dont know shit about Luffy if you think he would act like that in the manga. HELL, HE DIDNT!
But like Marcelle said, this is typical from Toei to ruin good moments like this.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
You're kidding right? Luffy's character in the anime is just like the one in the manga, they have got it right.
Nope. Luffy often act differently during fillers such as here:

There is no way Luffy would understand sarcasm from this guy and then hit him. Acting out of character " target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">

But wait wait, I bet you are going to say that Luffy is completly acting as Luffy in these scenes.

I am not sure how I didn't pick up on that scene making him come off like an "emo little bitch".
-
heh nevermind that
-
My main problem was it didn't look like Luffy knocked out 50 000, but like 50.
-
it didn't look like luffy knocked 50.000 men, more like a 50. well it didnt't look like it was an army of 100.000 men from the start
-
@No:
My main problem was it didn't look like Luffy knocked out 50 000, but like 50.
It didn't look much like 50,000 in the manga either though:
-
It didn't look much like 50,000 in the manga either though:
It has a lot more impact to it, though.
So, I rewatched the episode. Luffy's speech about heroes is one of my favorite moments for him. Love it. The music choices were nice.
But it was all really slow and honestly looked like crap. I understand the 1 ep. = 1 ch. thing, but it's still really frustrating with certain episodes. -
I didn't really like it.
The haki blast looked weird to me. -
Gotta Say i loved Usopp in the cage when Brooke returned.
-
I actually think Luffy wants to fight Zoro and Sanji, guys. More than Hody. That's why he's pushed them. Because he hates them. After he beats them he's going to fight the manga Luffy. 'Cause, you know, of how diametrically opposed to each other those two characters are.[/empty stare]

16Characters of LOLWUT?!?
-
After the last few eps it has really felt like One Ball Z…
Sadly they didn't even do 1chapter=1episode then. They fell short by about 2 pages zzzzz. Would've been a far better idea to finish the episode as the chapter finished imho.
-
Toei really needs to start stepping it up. Animation was horrible on all counts this episode, nevermind the horrible pacing. If Naruto can afford CGI to show entire armies with fancy swing around shots to make stuff look like a proper sizey battle, then Toei can too given the fact that One Piece is at least as successful. That haki blast deserved the royal CG treatment, no doubts about it.
Besides that, characters were horribly off-model. Luffy looked like a little chibi kid when he was looking at Hody. Nami looked like a little grinch, or sorta like fake Nami, when she was hiding behind the others. Etc etc. Seriously Toei. Step. It. Up. :(
Why is it so hard to get the faces right for some of the least changed characters? Luffy didn't change and yet his face is off-model. Nami only has longer hair, but that too gets off-model. Usopp's expressions, nose and all, even look messed up. In comparison, Franky looks just fine, and he actually changed. Wtf, wtf, wtf.
-
I didnt like how they handled the haki blast and terrible animation :|
-
C`mon Toei, at least add the last 2 pages.

it indeed seems that the the best animation like CGI and quaility are invested in naruto, if the they animated one piece episodes with the same quality like at least the animation of luffy's kick in the previous epiode or more like strong world the series would have been more succesful but then they should also remove the filler scenes or episodes. the filler scenes in this episodes i didn't like where the scenes when the 100.000 men attacked that chopper, brook, nami ,usopp started to panic in fear like the old days before their training and make them look weak , in the manga they where much more confident in battle . Also in the manga chopper nami and usopp where in the thousand sunny ready to charge with ther new weapons.
-
I don't understand why they didn't end where the actual chapter ends. It's a scene that fits WAAAY better at the end of an episode than in the beginning of one, and it would take like 1 minute of time, max, to show.
Also, I'm expecting the next 15 episodes or so to be full of fight-filler like we got with Hody vs Zoro.
-
Not sure if anybody noticed, but we got the Robin eyecatcher this episode.
!
All that's left is Usopp's and they'll be complete. Still wondering why they keep using the One Piece Logo though.
-
Oh God. It took forever for something to actually happen. Though the haki blast coulda been better, maybe more like when Rayleigh did it back in the auction house….
-
Not one of the best episodes; that much is clear.
Talking about the art is redundant since you guys mentioned everything of importance already (though I have to say that I miss the art of the old days- Skypiea for example). Since the art was bad everything else also felt kind of shallow and boring. The Haki blast for example felt really weak compared to the manga. It could've been made way more badass and impressive but whatever. What's done is done.At this point I'm just hoping that it gets better again- constantly, that is- at some point in the future. Starting with the next arc for example.
-
I actually enjoyed this episode and thought it was better than last week. Luffy taking a minute to get out of Megalo + Zoro walking like a dumbass were worse than Luffy pushing Zoro and Sanji.
I thought the filler they added was decent and did not take too long considering how short the chapter.
As always, the manga > anime.
I only recall one very meh art during the episode.
! I don't think Punk Hazard will be better in terms of animation consistency. I would not be surprised if Toei puts all their money each time Law appears but at the expense of everything else
-
that animated haki blast was a real let-down after waiting to see it all this time.
also, luffy pushing zoro and sanji was 'out-of-character' for luffy. he was genuinely pissed off at hody's declaration!
-
CGI
anime
quality
These kinda don't mix together all that often. Not that this episode wasn't atrociously animated, mind you,but when I think of how CGI looks often in anime,"quality" doesn't really come to mind.
-
Surprisingly enjoyable despite some sluggish moments. The "reunion" seemed to take too long given the circumstances, though it is perhaps one of those scenes that just works better in the manga. The best scenes were the ones building up the fight against the 100,000 with Zoro and Sanji trash talking and Nami pulling off a pretty good sight gag.
I believe the Papagg flashback was filler, though I found it strangely hilarious, particularly the very wonky Sunny rescue scene. Also "You cut too much!"
Also, I believe the depiction of Hody going Incredible Hulk on the WG was new. Enjoyable since most of the faces in that were recognizable and it was funny seeing them as mangled bodies with Hody in the same room.
The art was ok….sometimes, and the animation was just passable. There was some surprisingly good direction in regards to Hody--we rarely got his full body in a scene, usually just shots of his mouth, eyes, feet, etc as he threatened the Strawhats and proclaimed himself as the future Pirate King. It helped add to the menace while also being economical.
Wtf, wtf, wtf.
deguchi's art
Explains much.
Hanna-Barbera pirates
While the purist in me sometimes gets rubbed the wrong, many of those drawings can't help but put a smile on my face.
Edit: I was impressed at the attention to detail in the brief scene in which Shirahoshi starts to weep. Not perfect, but outstanding in comparison the rest of the episode.
-
Ugggghhhh….I really hate complaining about the anime because I really do enjoy it for the most part, But WHY do they have to end the episode a page an a half before it should actually end???
Just to add in what, a pointless scene with Pappug jumping down on Luffy, whatever the hell that was with Nami and the others, opening the episode without directly showing the flashback..
Taking out those would have easily given them more than enough time to finish the GD chapter….
-
@Mr.:

http://www.mangahere.com/manga/one_piece/v58/c634/10.htmlThanks. However….
Censorship note: No sword impaling the back of the guy slumped over the podium in the anime depiction.
Anyone else notice the tear drops on the boob thing? That felt sort of out of place.
Toei's One Piece lately has a knack for putting in similarly bizarre fanservice-like extra scenes, bits of animation, or art into the show (à la my avatar). I also noticed the scene in question since that was a completely separately animated close-up shot of the tear landing on her bosom, rather than something that could have been more coincidental. Agree it was pretty out of place. Then again, when would it be in place?
-

Good episode for me.
Everything was okay-ish until the Haki scene.
Luffy pushing Zoro and Sanji apart made me LOL. And what the hell was up with Megalo's farting sounds in the flashback?Reads the rest of the thread
-
i like the filler in this episode. like many of you were wondering what the hell happened. Implied filler is great when used properly. now maybe we can start all the fights for god sake.
and ya'll complaining about the art when a manga page is one still shoot and an anime is more complex. When the fights start the budjet will jump. Alll these episode are mostly talking and
filler so I don't care how they lokk but when the fists start flying the better be looking amazing.

You know what's more unbearable than Luffy pushing people aside? The unbelievably unfunny and played out mess that is Zoro arguing with Sanji every other minute. Also more unbearable are the people who still get giddy at this because their wet dream fanboy idols are spewing the same old insults at each other. It's not funny. It was funny once, about 300 episodes back; that's it. Here's an idea for Oda: Why don't they just fuck? Hm? Right in the middle of the page - a whole page - of them just going at it hard bent over a railing of the Sunny. Now THAT would be funny. No need for "emo Luffy" to push them then and everything would be resolved. Also completely in character for them, by the way.
my opinion sir ignore it if it doesn't please you. and ms saturday or whatever it's name is right there's gonna be a lot fo filler ish flash back next week for sure.
W-Why? .. ; ~; I'm not an it.

I can agree with that. I mean, since the very beginning the anime tends to "caricaturize" the characters whenever they make filler scenes
(like, say, Usopp needs to be scared and panicking everytime he talks, Brook speaks through skull jokes only, etc) but lately they've been adding too much Zoro/Sanji bickering for some reason, it ends up feeling like they can't interact normally at all. It's getting annoying. In the manga they weren't even arguing when Luffy stepped up to use Haki.
At least in the past they were more creative about it, like the "almost kissing" jokes.@nodensuke:

That was for the best. The less material Deguchi covers, the better.
Odds are that last scene will be handled nicely next week. -
Brook speaks through skull jokes only
I can handle Zoro/Sanji.
I would like to never hear another Skull Joke ever again.
-
Luffy pushing Sanji and Zoro aside was a bit unexpected and arguably OoC but I liked it although it was blatant pandering to fans in order to make the haki scene "more cool". Too bad said scene was ridiculously low budget.
-
I still don't understand how the animation(only the animation) of one piece can be so inferior to like 80 % of anything than comes out now. You'd think they would put more effort into it since it seems pretty popular.
Also maybe my eyes deceive me but I have the impression that the animation has gone worse since enies lobby. I think the last time when I thought it looked really good was like some parts during thriller bark.
-
I still don't understand how the animation(only the animation) of one piece can be so inferior to like 80 % of anything than comes out now.
That's because 80% of everything that comes out now doesn't have over 500 episodes.

I remember when I first got into one piece and marathon most of the series, the beginning was meh but I knew it would get better and by water 7 I loved how the anime looked. Thriller bark looked great, sabaody was terrific ect ect..
Basically what I'm saying is… This anime was awesome up until the new world arc when I joined this community to discuss it.. Is the anime getting worse or am I just seeing it as worse because some people here find lots of faults?
-
Basically what I'm saying is… This anime was awesome up until the new world arc when I joined this community to discuss it.. Is the anime getting worse or am I just seeing it as worse because some people here find lots of faults?
The reunion arc (or alternatively the Back to Sabaody arc, whatever) had very good animation and artwork, so it's not a timeskip problem. There is no "New World arc"; if anything it would be considered a saga. Right now I consider all of this to be under the Big Mom saga until further notice from the manga. Just like the Drum Island arc is under the Baroque Works saga and Amazon Lily under the Whitebeard War saga..
– BUT I DIGRESS! What I've actually found is, the longer an arc is that Toei has to animate, the lazier and sloppier they seem to get with it. As if they become bored of it and want to move on, too. The shorter and more contained an arc is (like the aforementioned return to Sabaody one and the underwater episodes), the better the artwork tends to be. They started the Fishman Island arc with spectacular art and animation; you could tell they were really excited for it.. then somewhere around the flashback, when it began to drag, it took a nasty nose dive. People like Nami, Jinbe, Usopp, Keimi and Robin are almost always eyesores when they show up in recent episodes. I'd say, in general, the anime's artstyle began to get very inconsistent during the Sabaody arc onward. We never got stuff like that freakishly different and god awful take on Robin's stay in Tequila Wolf before. Only time will tell if they get slightly more consistent with it. -
I can agree with that. I mean, since the very beginning the anime tends to "caricaturize" the characters whenever they make filler scenes

At least in the past they were more creative about it, like the "almost kissing" jokes. Now that you mention it, I agree in terms of the anime adaptations. I don't really mind that they are caricaturized much since it usually fits some of the goofy and laid-back elements of the manga. In terms of Zoro/Sanji, they still show quite a bit of comradery and respect despite the putdowns, much like
! Sanji/Kinemon in the Punk Hazard arc. It's just that the anime milks it way too much, similar to the Buggy and Hancock moments in older eps.
Didn't think it was bad in this ep though. Luffy breaking it up helped quite a bit instead of their bickering turning into background noise like it usually does.
-
That scene and few others felt completly atrocious/awfull and really out of place, nothing i hope for to be honest, its just something that almost always doesnt work well.
Eh, if it is a frequent thing, I'd agree that it is jarring. But honestly, after the Amazon Lily spectator fight, the Marineford battle, and now Fishman Island, I am tired of badly drawn 1 or 2 frame slideshow 'crowd' backgrounds, which are just as horrible and out of place. As opposed to drawing a 100 stick figures, they can prepare a bunch really well, stick them in a 3d world, merge it in, and pan around. It gives way more sense of scale when you get a 1,000 really tiny things on the screen. Besides, I never felt the
I was talking about was that bad; they did it very tastefully and imo is one of the great examples that One Piece can learn from. (As opposed to the Pain warpy-face-of-filler-rage-fest.)@Miss:

First of all, your avatar makes the bolded part really entertaining. Thanks for making me smile.
As for the crew stereotypes… I think the anime is catching up on nearly 2.5 years of no strawhat interaction, and are overdoing it as a consequence. I really wish they'd just snuck in a filler arc and got it out of their system that way, though. Although it probably is the Japanese watchers who just watch every week which they are catering to, who have a far bigger ratio of 'we don't know how it started' than the more addicted fans in this forum. In that sense, I guess it helps to cement relationships after not showing them on tv after two years.
-
@miss Saturday by "new world arc" I simply meant the time skip, though I was rushing.
@worstje I doubt their catching up on 2.5 years of no sh interaction, just padding out episodes with useless banter.
-
That would be how you make it less interesting. Yeah, it's interesting when we read it once a week, but that only takes up 5 minutes of our time. One chapter's worth of information taking up 22 minutes is a lot worse imo.
Not always. Episodes like this one, yeah, I totally agree. However, you have to remember that dialogue heavy chapters (not necessarily these latest scenes) work better in 22 minutes, because you can't exactly rush through dialogue. Sometimes it doesn't work for sure, but other times it worked fine for me. It depends on the director, I feel.
