Dropped this series awhile back. It was really entertaining and I liked all the characters but around the time the panty fighter manga arc or whatever story line showed up it sort of jumped the shark especially since they seem to be bringing back nanakins already seemingly having not learned a thing.
Bakuman
-
-
I thought that arc was mostly awful too, but I think you should continue with the manga.
The "panty fighter arc' is mostly skip-able and the newest one is more in line with the main plot. -
The chapter is out.
Really liked that chapter, even though I read the spoilers. -
I adore you Fukuda
-
Geez that was a fast chapter. I got to the end and was ready for another 20 pages.
Sign of a good chapter I suppose.
-
Hmm, I guess reading the spoiler kinda ruined this chapter, because honestly it feels like not a lot happened. Fukuda does his schpiel (which was pretty cool), more fan wankery, Ashirogi, Fukuda, and Azuki talk a bunch, and then Azuki's big speech at the end, which I guess was supposed to be the highlight.
But still, not a bad chapter I suppose.
-
Fukuda has balls, but that's hardly a novelty. But damn if the same doesn't go for Azuki. Strictly in metaphorical sense of course, for Mashiro's sake.
The last chapter make me suddenly think that Azuki might have turned out to be a decent charcater - if only Ohba spared her at least a half of screen time other developed characters of this manga have received.
-
Yes Azuki!
Miho has generally been the stronger one in their relationship. Shame about the whole 'no talking' thing which meant she got little to no screen-time. But this type of arc, focusing on the problems of anime/manga culture, is what's best about Bakuman.
-
Fukuda defeated the internet.
This man need a round of applause.ā- Update From New Post Merge ---

Hahahah! When did Mishiro become so quotable? -
I like that we're seeing more of Miho. One of my favorite parts of the "Mashiro has Kidney Failure" Arc was seeing the two together. This arc might as well say "There is two Mashiros. One is a girl though and she's a good character."
-
This chapter was beautiful, honestly may be the best chapter in the entire series for me.
-
awesome chapter!! Fukuda rules, and Miho is just as great.
It is just so beautiful, intense. And the fact that for once this topic moment it is about the main characters is fantastic!! -
Is it even possible for Fukuda to get any more awesome?!
This is why I love this manga/anime. It really tosses real life issues out on the table and doesn't try to sugarcoat shit too much.
The only thing missing is some Hiramura action.
Also, I know many of you have issues with Mashiro's promise/relationship with Miho, but I don't really. I know it's a bit unrealistic and kind of goes against the realisim of the rest of the manga, but I honestly feel for them every time their relationship is explored. "Pure love" may be a bit overdramatic, but it kind of feels like love is supposed to feel like and not the drama that goes on these days.
So what exactly would we classify as an otaku? I collect a lot of anime/manga (in addition to movies and TV shows and books) and I do like it a lot, but I wouldn't compare myself to some of the shit I see out of Japan. I'm by no means "cool" and I'll gladly take the label of a nerd, but I have to wonder just what one has to do to be called otaku by Japanese standards.
-
Stateside Otaku is used as a fan badge of honor as "person who likes anime and collects books, figures and dvds"ā¦ because it was adopted before people grasped what it meant.
In Japan its a big insult that means "person who has no job or social skills, that likely lacks in the hygeine department, that devotes their entire life to cartoons without contributing anything productive to society, still acts like a 12 year old, and likely has an unreasonable and obsessive amount of merchandise." It is NOT something you put on a resume or proclaim proudly.
Its the difference between having a shelf of merchandise built up over ten years, (and being able to part with some of it whenever) and having a room so stock full of junk you can't walk around in it. Between a fan and an obsessive. Between a hobby and a lifestyle. Take it as you prefer.
-
Are there really that many otaku in Japan that they can make such a big impact on the whole industry? (or is this just typical manga exaggeration)

Maybe he's using this opportunity to develop her more?
It might be interesting if this speech causes her popularity to drop and we get to see her climb back again, explore the Japanese idol/voice acting industry. -

If anything, they're under exaggerating in this case. Because its going to ultimately be resolved with a heartfelt speech or two.
Crazy fans areā¦ crazy. Especially when it comes to their "pure idols." And especially in Japan. Chastising, calling them names, and death threats really aren't out of the ordinary when their "pure" image has been tarnished.
Once again, or anyone thinking this arc is over the top...Hirano Aya's (Misa Misa in the Deathnote anime) Fans Make a Fuss Over Her Ring

This chapter got me really excited and I found myself cheering Miho and Fukuda on. Really great chapter. Can't say much more besides can't wait for the next one~
I just want to see the otakus flip their shit.

Interesting. Thanks for some clarification on that.
I guess I would fall into just having a pretty large shelf full of stuff I've collected over five years or so. Now as said I don't particularly care about being a nerd because I am what I am. It's just when I hear how bad otaku in Japan apparently are, I really don't want to be classified with those bunch.
I guess we can just ignore that type and focus on the good aspects and people of Japan. Similarly to how we ignore the bad people over here in the states.

Spoilers for 169 are out. They're pretty in depth so you probably want to skip them and just wait a day for the actual chapter.
! Miho continues the broadcast.
Noise starts to spread, and more people tune in to the broadcast.
The responses seem to be positive, although still a few doubtful replies linger.
Miho's agent still suggests that there is time to change it by saying that she is kidding
but Miho says that even though it's not something her fans need to know, she can't lie to her important fans,
that's something she can't accept.
! Some fan calls the radio station.
so the show producer asks Miho if she wants to take the call.
there is a short discussion about the risk of taking calls, but Miho says she will take the calls
and any call will be fine. She wants to answer to her fans.
! The first call seemed to sound very supportive when the operator took the call, but when she/he's on air.
She/he says she/he feels very moved by her words, but it's Ridiculous!!
Miho is shocked but then replies, if she has offend her/him, and that she is very sorry, but she would like to continue to hear her fan's thoughts.
Miho is shaking, but still bravely carries on.
! The next call asks whether it is true that the two have never seen each other. It is impossible.
Miho replies by announcing all the time they have ever really met each other:
at the wedding, at the hospital, less than 10 phone calls and so on.
The fan continues to ask if Miho is a virgin.
Miho is shocked, but answers yes
Mashiro is pissed off, and walks away from the radio broadcast.
the fan continues to ask, if they have ever kissed.
Miho's reply is no, but they had promised that they will next time, which is when they will have achieved their dreams.
The fan thinks it's wonderful, but Miho's fans are mostly guys, so announcing the relationship might decrease her fan numbers?
! It all comes down to the last callā¦
It's... Mashiro!
Mashiro says that after hearing Miho's broadcast, he couldn't stay silent anymore.
Even though it's kind of lame for the guy to explain, but since Miho already did so much
he needs to do something as well.
Mashiro continues, first, Miho is telling the truth, she would never lie to her fans.
second
Miho is a voice actress, Mashiro hopes that everyone will believe in her voice.
Of all the performances she has done, she never disappointed anyone.
Mashiro strongly believes Miho can get the role with her talent.
Miho replies, Mashiro kun, I will definitely pass the voice test.
The broadcast is over.
! The next day, the magazine that wrote about Mashiro and Miho before changes its tone to being very supportive of the two of them and the agent changes his tone as well in the last panel. -
Yeah. Although I've read it. And it's good.
-
So yeah, the chapter is out, and I really enjoyed it. I'm ready for their dream to come true already.
-
this week's bakuman is simply amazing. :3
-
I'm a big fan of Bakuman's dramatic scenes, especially because they are ott. The whole 'no talking' thing seemed sweet and romantic for onceā¦ kyaa~ MihoxMashiro
-
I wouldn't have bothered posting spoilers if I knew the chapter was going to be out so fast. Friday morning is pretty quick for Bakuman.
Anyway, great chapter. A little easy for the resolution, but great chapter.
-
Pretty good chapter. Lots of emotion and drama.
Really wondering how things will play out now. It looks like all Azuki has to do is the pass the audition, and with all this build up she pretty much has to. And with that being the case, Bakuman could very well end within the next 3-5 chapters.
-
I liked this chapterā¦.for once ohba and obata made me care for this romace....even though I still just think the realsionship is dumb.
-

I think it couldā¦ but I think there also needs to be fallout to their series ending after only two years since there's been a lot of anticipatory angst and setup dedicated to that. And they need a long-term series that can beat Eiji. Plus while we don't NEED to see it, Hirimaru and Aoki's wedding.
I agree, it could end very shortly, its definitely been in its endgame for a while, but it doesn't feel quiiite there yet, unlike Negima and HxH are feeling.
-
Nice chapter; Bakuman does so incredibly well with these emotional scenes even when the premise is a bit ridiculous. I didn't think I was going to enjoy talk-no-jutsu working on the Otakus, but I'm OK with it now.
Hmmā¦also I agree that Bakuman isn't giving off the vibe like HxH that an ending could be any week now. Certainly it's the last arc, but I think there will be at least 10 more chapters.
-
I said this would be the appropriate course of action. Didn't think Miho would do it though.
-
I kind of thought things would work out like this. While normal-people, like us, think Azuki and Mashiro's marriage promise is needlessly restricting and generally a bad idea, otaku would be all over it. It's pretty much the purest love there is, which is a big deal for them.
Also, Mashiro taking to the air was great, and Fukuda snorting ramen out of his nose was hilarious. great chapter.
-
I love how every other Fukuda appearance has ramen noodles out of his nose~
But this was a really solid chapter. Say what you will about Azuki and Mashiro's romance (there is certainly much that can be and has been said) but Mashiro calling in and talking to her through the radio show was really really sweet. Put a nice smile on my face.
-
I don't think their romance is unnatural, as much as it is forced, I've met couples that waited until their marriage to have relations and so on. Other cultures can be more old fashioned compared to big cities or the western world.
My problem with is, is the amount of force they have to exert to stay together, a normal couple wouldn't think their relationship could work because of all of the problems standing between them. At least in my experience, one of my ex's was scared of her best friend not liking me for example and kept talking about "what if's" that shouldn't have played a role in our relationship.
It's also one thing to be faithful, not cheat and another not to have hormones and acknowledge a really hot voice actress that's hitting on you, without necessarily reciprocating.
All in all, I preferred last chapter, too much overacting/drama in this one which honestly, didn't win me over.
On the other hand, I will mention that this publicity will push their popularity to surpass Eiji, therefore I could see Bakuman ending soon.
-
I enjoyed the chapter and I'm glad Mashiro had balls and said what was on his mind. MashiroxMiho is definitely gonna happen.
-
I don't know about you guys, but I'd like Bakurman to continue for at least another year. I would like to see the aftermath of their marriage and see a proper wrap-up for most of the other main Jump authors.
-
Epic, this was EPIC chapter!, a fantastic climax!!

Agree, would be nice a year, or at least one more semester!
-
200 chapters blank, and I'm satisfied. :)
-
Bakuman does its shoujo bits extremely well.
Well, that aside, another great, solid chapter. I didn't really anticipate Mashiro to make a call, so that point was even better for me.
http://t.imgbox.com/aahEgBDb.jpg
And the new volume cover. Shujin on the inner side is probably the best thing about it.
I almost wish to see Kaya smacking him after a comment like that, lol. Also would be hilarious if Kaya ended up pregnant before the series ended.
-
Seeing Miho show all this class and spine and courage makes me sad that she hasn't been seen in the series more. She can certainly handle a fiasco.
-
Spoilers for 170 are out. Without saying anything, there's a gorgeous color shot starting off the chapter that looks really great.
-
Chapter's out on Manga Reader.
! I don't understand Mashiro's decision - yes, he believes that Miho is good enough to get the role by merit of her own abilities, but this clearly seems to be a plan by the director to avoid casting Miho (seeing as he wants the voting to be online, and as we've clearly seen, there are a lot of obsessed fanatics out there - many of whom would probably find some way to cheat the system). I suppose it would make it feel more like an accomplishment on Miho's part, as she'd be getting the part through her own effort rather than her connections, but the odds are heavily stacked against her, as people are not going to vote based solely on performance, and both Hattori and Takagi realize this, yet Mashiro's going along with it anyways.
! I'm sure she'll get the role regardless, of course - it just seems odd that he'd go along with this despite knowing that there are a lot of people who still can't accept their relationship and will vote against her for that petty reason. -
The shading is insane this week, so many panels look like they are 3d!

I'm sure she'll get the role regardless, of course - it just seems odd that he'd go along with this despite knowing that there are a lot of people who still can't accept their relationship and will vote against her for that petty reason.! I agree with this wholeheartedly. I mean, she's going to get the role regardless, but Mashiro assenting to these clearly stacked odds despite how downright stupid it isā¦ pretty Mashiro, actually.
! Still, if they were trying to find ways to make this a popularity & talent contest and they're CLEARLY considering alternative options to begin with, they should've gone with a TV poll like Takagi proposed. It doesn't have the bias of the internet and appeals to a larger fanbase which accomplishes the goals of making this fair - which was the entire fucking point. Hattori and Takagi are right on the money.
! Having Azuki jump through so many hoops needlessly is just too moronic. -
! I'm not surprised, it was a very Mashiro-like thing to do. It's a shonen manga so it's only natural that they do the hero-like crap. Of course a normal person wouldn't do what he did, but most shonen chars aren't normal to begin with.
-
Just make it annonymous poll. Have the voice clips from the actresses, and list them as A, B, C, and D.
Its what Central Park Media did when they were casting for the new dub of Outlanders a few years back. I voted in that for the voices I thought best for the parts, those are the onrs that won (because everyone agreed with me) and I was surprised to discover at the end that Sean Schemmel (Goku) was up for, and had won, two of the parts. Had I been listening super intently to try and figure out where I'd heard a voice before, I still would have had trouble figuring them out from short bursts of audio clips.
Yes, super crazy fans will be able to pick out which actress is which, but for the majority, it'll be as fair and based on talent as something like this could be. and suitablity for the role for everyone else.
As for the odds being stackedā¦ eh. its like every other "gamble everything on winning" fight this series has had, its no different from Eiji continung or ending his manga based on someone beating him even once, or the main duo ending Tanto to try and come up with something else even without a better idea in mind. And its for the best Miho gets at least one of these, after having been completely sidelined for so long.
-
The translation was a bit weird this week, so I didn't totally get that Mashiro had agreed to go along with it till you guys confirmed it. But yeah, since that is the case, just more Mashiro stupidity. Good chapter though.
-
despite how downright stupid it isā¦ pretty Mashiro, actually
This is Bakuman in a sentence.
And "pretty mashiro" should be somekind of a loving insult.
-
They're taking this story too far. This unorthodox way of deciding the voice actress of Naho is just plain dumb and clearly can't be impartial. If this was real life it'd be a pretty dirty low brow move for the producers/anime staff to suggest this. This way to go about it has less to do with the person's skill and ability. At the very least they just seem to want to get more publicity for holding a public audition with online ballots.
Of course this arc probably will have a fairytale happy ending where she gets the role and her stardom is propelled to idol status or not but seeing them make another manga just to get Miho the role seems like a pain.
-

I don't think it will, seems like a cheap ploy to extend the story due to editorial pressure.
