Chapter 657: A severed Head
-
-
It's all feels very Dharma Initiative. I hope we see how much the WG really knows about the Science of this universe. It'd be rad if Vega Punk met Franky and freaked out at how cool he is!
-
I actually like the idea of the Giant Kids thinking that the Straw Hats are actually toys. It makes perfect sense.
Samurai Head: Puzzle.
Franky: Action Figure.
Nami: Dress up doll.
Chopper: Plushie.
Sanji: Sex toy.…....
Giant Kiddies will probably just sit on him or something:D I bet they'll all want to play with Franky and Luffy.
-
Seeing as how he's on the other side of the world, "that guy" is probably going to factor into the ending of the series somehow - not Punk Hazard.
Maybe we'll get a nakama out of this, but my bets are on this arc being our first taste of Vegapunk's scientific brilliance. A Hailfire peaks world, a dragon, an unusual mustache symbol, strange trooper-things, and overgrown children in a controlled environment all seem to be telltale signs of a madman.
What was the moustache symbol?
-
Unusual moustache symbol?
Have I missed anything?
-

Pretty sure they meant the giant skull with horns-symbol thingy on the entrance… don't get worked up Nolus :ninja:

Oh, okay:ninja:
I wonder if John Giant retired and went babysitting. I would love to see Uncle John her, among the kids, shouting things and such~
-
…....

giant kids will sit on the Sanji sex toy???
That sounds kind of dirty.
-

That sounds kind of dirty.
Accidentally, of course…
You with your dirty minds! It's children we are talking about! They will play Transformers with Franky and use Luffy as a bouncy ball or something and that's it! No sex toys whatsoever!
-
-
Right… he's certainly far away, but he still could be the guy, considering he could be one of Roger's... just a thought.
Isn't it just Shiki?
-
Isn't it just Shiki?
It has not been proven yet. It could be anyone, we really don't know right now. But I think some people do believe that it is Shiki, like myself.
-
@Fire Fist:
The most dangerous Shichibukai, by far, is Doflamingo, and not because of his abilities. He comes off, to me at least, as one of the most intelligent people in One Piece. I'm not talking in terms of genius such as Franky or Vegapunk, or book smarts such as Nami, Robin, and Chopper. The man's intelligence seems to come from his Business Acumen. He has several ventures all over the Grand Line, is able to talk back to even the highest of government officials, and runs/ran government protected businesses, illegitimate or legitimate. He's far more dangerous than any other Shichibukai for that reason alone.
Agreed. His street smarts are probably the best shown so far in the series. I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of him becoming a Yonkou later on in the series.
-
Didn't Oda say he wanted to use Shiki in the manga, but because it would have taken too many chapters he just used for the movie? If so, shouldn't this be enough to erase Shiki from the what-Torso's-identity-is theories?
-

Sanji: Sex toy.Only for teens and adults, they are too young.
I agree on Nami being a doll, …... sooo.......... Sanji would be the maditory male doll, many lttle girls need. That would be Sanji's dream there.
There needs to be (at least) one male doll added into the collection of dozens and dozens pretty BarbieDolls. In the typical little girl's playtime, Sanji gets to play the hero/boyfriend/husband/male-friend to the various pretty girl dolls. ... int the atypical and odd girl's (that would be me) playtime with the dolls, the male doll is one that needs to be saved by a female hero, the villian that gets beeten up, the servent to serve the girl.
Sanji can be the playdoll (now get your minds out the gutter!) butler to Nami's fashion doll.WAIT...... he does that in real life !

OMG Nami gets hotter by the Chapter; and is pure fashion! according to her anyway. If she keeps going on that direction sunny is going to start feeling her heat and if fish can get burn to a crisp in the ocean there's no telling what a hot woman can do on a "sun themed" Brigantine (If I'm not mistaken that's sunny's model).
On a more serious note. There are way too many giant children for only one "babysitter", and if that turns out to be the case then he/she should have high trusted employees-crewmembers or what not by him/her side; I still dont feel as the PH guys are that big of a threat, if they were they wouldn't use such an underhanded method as sleeping gas instead they would have beaten the crap out of whoever was on the ship and drag them to shore). That aside, this chapter comes of a little bit odd in my eyes; usually there is no sense in having a cell one or two doors away from a nursery. Unless the captors decide to look after the kids of the captured men or have the kids as guinea pigs. Then again, has anyone suggested that the Island might have one or two giants around? I mean, if there are giant kids, there might be giant adults as well; or a giant samurai. Ok, forget about the giant samurai (although I would love to see this come true) A giant samurai would be like the perfect crossroad of Ussop's and Zoro's dream, though this is the first time I think about that.
Brook is going to play a big role in this arc I pressume as he was left by himself due to his "condition". I'm getting weird vibes from bird person; hopefully robin will hve an aereal match there, which would be kind of cool. If that happens there would be two sh members with the ability to "fly" using two completely different processess.
My thoughts were drawn out a bit. Since we don't have a chapter until next week we might as well speculate..

Hopefully we already have 3 members capable of flight by completely different means. Sanji Skywalker leads the pack with Angel Robin and Nami the Monkey Queen. Hopefully Franky doesn't ruin Team Sanji's dream with some jet pack on his back.
-
I can't wait for the Samurai to be utterly amazed by the Strawhats' skills!
He already witnessed Franky's Radicalbeam… but was not THAT impressed I think;;;; lolz
Oh how I long for those cliched part! -
It has not been proven yet. It could be anyone, we really don't know right now. But I think some people do believe that it is Shiki, like myself.
Didn't Shiki have a steering wheel on his head?
-
Didn't Shiki have a steering wheel on his head?
Shiki did indeed have steering wheel stuck for good in his head. But technically you could remove parts that are outside his skull.
But I highly daub it's Shiki. If it was Shiki, what would be the point in hiding his face. -
Laboon looks really happy in that shot and the hair kind of matches Captain Yorki from the Rumbar Pirates. Remember we never had any proof that he died.
-
Can't be Yorki since it would ruin Brook's dream of meeting Laboon again to fulfill the promise of the Rumbar Pirates.
-
I'm curious if this is how the government gets giants like on the giant squad to join their ranks. Maybe they raise them from birth to be Marines.
-
Anybody wondering what Crocodile and Daz Bones are doing in the New World?
( i know its off topic) -
Anybody wondering what Crocodile and Daz Bones are doing in the New World?
( i know its off topic)They're probably wrecking havoc. I'm pretty sure Crocodile renewed his dream of becoming pirate king and they are both terrible strong indiviuals.
-
So, where the heck is 658? Its almost 4pm Thursday evening in Japan. I'm worried this has something to do with the VIZ deal :(
-
16 chars of nope
what? why? 16 chars
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
My dream team: Crocodile, Das Bones, Marco, Aokiji .... its totally possible too. With Whitebeard dead, I don't think Marco & Crocodile would have any anmity. And Aokiji has apparantly gone rogue :D

Its been announced that there will be no new chapter this week. Oda usally takes a break every 6 chapters or so. Its nothing unusally.

Yeah if a Wednesday goes by with no spoiler or chapter, I usually assume this is in effect. Phooey.
-
Sanji's kick didn't manage to break the door, yet Franky blasted it off with ease…
Interesting.
Sanji was just sorta casually kicking door while Franky used one of his strongest attack on full cola.
-

Why is it so hard to believe that Franky is capable of very destructive damage?(even more so than Sanji)
Even before Time skip Franky was Capable of Blowing away a Pacifista with a single attack to buy some time.
While it took all 3 Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji to take 1 down with their strongest attacks to the point of Exhaustion. -
Back to the door, even if it already was discussed
-
Back to the door, even if it already was discussed
I don't think it was discussed. People just left comments that Sanji wasn't able to Break through or something of the sort; it was never really discussed.
-
It was discussed already… And like someone brought up. The door wasn't broken by Franky either but he destroyed the hinges. You can see him holding the door in his hands. Still impressive enough and we should put a rest into it. The mods don't like such stuff
-
Ah, Found a more Recent example for this being stronger means being able to do anything…
! My point is Every strawhat should be capable of something the others isn't… Like usopp Sniping on the tower of Justice.
Brute Force Strength isn't everything. -

Brute Force Strength isn't everything.Tho in Franky's case it kinda was brute force, that's why I find it interesting.
In this situation he outclassed Sanji in raw destructive power, an area that was somewhat exclusive to Sanji, Luffy and Zoro pre timeskip. Now we can speculate that Sanji wasn't really trying or whatnot, but it can't be ignored that Oda decided to let Franky handle this feat (while at the same time illustrating that Sanji failed at it).
This doesn't necessarily mean that Franky is stronger than Sanji, but it proves that there is no "monstrous trio" anymore who has to shoulder everything related to power. The time skip turned every Straw Hat into a force to reckoned with, and Sanji, Zoro & Luffy slowly realize this as well.
This chapter is the best example. Sanji's first reaction was to blame himself for not noticing the sleeping gas, like he was responsible for the situation. Understandable, after all he had to babysit the weaker members for over 400 chapters. But these times are over now, and I think Oda will show us more situations in the future where the other members outclass Luffy, Zoro & Sanji - even at feats of raw power (be it through beams, plants, gigantic limbs or whatever). -
@metteminne:
Oh ? How come and was it even metioned in the previous chapter ?
what? why? 16 chars
One piece is on a break this week, the message appeared, as always, at the end of the chapter, but it wasn't translated.
Some people mentioned it at the first apges of this thread but i guess it went unnoticed. -

Franky pre TS had good/better raw strenght feats against for example the PX and he for sure was impressive.
But I overall agree... It's nice to see that all of them evolved so much and that the mosnter trio haven't to shoulder or babysit everytime anymore. And of course we will see feats from them who only they can do with their special skills

The heat from the lazers melted the hinges/the locks on the door. There was no brute force about it, considering the door was still intact.
-
The door for next nakama since it's apparently stronger than both Sanji and Franky.
-
there's not gonaa be a chapter this week huh? well you can only do so much with kicking.Franky is like a mini warship now. they aren't that far apart in strength
-
No chapter this week unless you read Alpha.
-
and now they making me want to get alpha

I'm curious if this is how the government gets giants like on the giant squad to join their ranks. Maybe they raise them from birth to be Marines.
It doesn't have to be that, and certainly not all of them. Remember that the warriors of Elbaf are not the only giants in the OP world. Twice we've been told that not all giants are from Elbaf=
- Jaguar D Saul told Robin he's not "one of those avages from Elbaf".
-in a SBS, Oda answers a question asking about if Oars is a giant, why is he so much taller than Dorry & Broggy. Oda says that there several islands that has giants and they are not all the same, so yes Oars was a giant (yeah some were saying he wasn't because he's so much bigger than other giants).
With that in mind, maybe one or more of those other giant-inhabited islands are part of the WG, therefore some giants join for same reasons "normal" sized humans join, they actally are loyal to the WG. But that doesn't mean that some are forced or brainwashed into joining. So maybe some giants are raised from childhood to be marines. After all, the WG has done something similar …. the CP9 program.... Most are orphans, other whose parents are part ofit, that are raised to be agents. So some of the giants in the marines may be just that ... but I don't think all are.

Just to clarify i'm not saying Chapter 658 came out this week in Alpha, it is 2 weeks behind.
-
I know but scanlations are harder to get now that mangastream is gone. so maybe I'll get one of these weekly issues for 99 cents or wait for the physical volume and not waste my money on something thats two weeks behind. I'm so torn.

It seems odd to me that some giants would willingly join the marines just like that. I always imagined they had some kind of pride that doesn't allow that, and it's not just with giants from Elbaf. I mean, if I would be that hella big, I wouldn't want some tiny little ants to order me around. Although maybe if they really want to help people and fight against piracy, they can put away this really big difference and may join the marines. That's if they are not from Elbaf.
I still think it's mostly brainwashing what made those giants (for example in the Giant Squad) to join the forces of the Marines. John Giant could be an exception because he seems like a fellow who would be up to some "save-innocent-people" stuff.
Hey, you know what? I still find it strange how Lacroix wears a suit. Look at the others: Ronse, Catman, Afro, BackwardsCap - Nothing fancy (just the coats), suitable for giant people. Samurai - another strange one… in the manga, we never really got to see what he's wearing under his robe. Pants? Shoes? Or traditional samurai stuff? Hippo, Lacroix and FemGiant - wearing what normal sized people wear, not giants. Who makes ties and suits for giants? And why does Lacroix looks so elegant, he's a freaking giant! I mean, Hippo is monstrous enough and FemGiant is another example of "if-she/he-wouldn't-be-so-big-compared-to-everything-we-wouldn't-know-she/he's-a-giant".
Well, now that I look at it more closely (like I haven't for like a hundred times), most of the giants seems to have other body-shapes than normal-sized humans. Even Lacroix has that "big-belly-on-funny-little-legs", just like Ronse, Kitty, BackwardsCap and Brogy. Then again, there are those who look more "normal" like Dorry, Samurai, Afro, FemGiant and John Giant.
In the end, the question remains the same. Why is Lacroix so elegant? Am I looking too deep into it? Why does Lacroix has an elegant name? I mean, John Giant is kind of obvious and Ronse suits a giant, just like Dorry and Brogy. Then there's Monsieur Lacroix~
I hope this post makes some sense.
@Md-Martin:I'm curious if this is how the government gets giants like on the giant squad to join their ranks. Maybe they raise them from birth to be Marines.
Brainwash, or the giants have some serious issues with unemployment.

I don't think it's a waste at all, especially with Zoro saying "Samurai huh? Sounds familiar, Brook?" May not be the exact sentence, but all the useless debating and disappointments for nothing. I like going over it again with super clear pictures and translations while having the knowledge of the next chapter in mind.
