Live action Akira!?!? Produced by Leonardo Dicaprio?!?!?!
-
wow.. first comic books. Now Hollywood is going to try it's hand at ruining manga too?
-
Akira is a comic book.

I assume by "Hollywood" you are actually referring to "Hollywood"? If you meant it in a broad "Movie Industry" term then you might as well include Dragonball. Either way, a few more links on this (fairly old news) from a website I don't care about:
-
you know what I mean Tizoc.
and yeah Brennen, I was referring to the movie industry.
Ninja Scroll too huh?
hoo.. boy…
-
Old news is old .

A pity all anime live-action adaptions suck. Speed Racer is an exception because it was more of a dub adaption if anything. Otherwise, Akira live action would sound really promising.
I think though that movie stars are now starting to come out of the closet with their anime habits. I seem to remember Ben Affleck showing off his PK-ing skills on Diablo II battle.net a few years back, and Robin Williams is a known Evangelion fan. I wonder who else will start to publicly show love of other media?
It's sort of ironic, when one thinks of a super star, one imagines they are above the same kind of entertainment that normal people would enjoy.

- Yay! Someone else liked Speed Racer!
- Is that really true with Ben and Robin? I can't imagine that with Robin, but Ben, he's funny but he's also a born douche. LOL. I can imagine his PK skills.
Elijah Woods is supposably a gamer. He hasn't really been in any movies lately, so a part of me feels that to be a bit true. However…

He's guilty of worse things.

Now THAT'S a creepy mother-fucker right there.
-
Hmm… weren't they gonna make a Live-Action Bebop too? Anyway, so long as it isn't made by the same guys as Dragonball, it shouldn't be too too horrible, though I still say Marvel should get the rights to these movies as they do movie adaptations justice.

Yeah and Keanu Fucking Reaves(sp) is set to play as Spike. Can ANYONE see Neo pulling off Jeet Kune Do, because as hard as I try I just cant picture that. Its gonna be sad when Ein's actor outshines him.

I know I was just joining in on the sarcasm.
-
Oh yeah, Eureka Seven as Spike! Right there's another one of those 'celebrity fans'. I wonder how many of them torrent? What if I'm chatting with one of my pals on IRC and he's actually some kind of famous film actor. What if I'm actually a famous politician?!
Japan's Prime Minister might just turn out to be a Rozen Maiden fanboy desu~!

If Ein is even in the movie let alone the right dog.

goddammit I thought this was canned a couple months ago
-
Why Warner Brothers? Why?…
-
Along with Battleship, I look forward to seeing this thrilling adaptation of Akira.

My sarcasm detector just a miniature nuclear explosion.
Anyway, this is terrible. It'll be just as bad as the live-action Dragonball they made a few years ago.
-
Why Warner Brothers? Why?…
Brand recognition.
I'd bet Reddit Gold it'll be retooled as a Cold War story in New York City. Tetsuo and Akira will be Italian-American gang kids. Shikishima will be Robert S. McNamara. The other psychic children will be exposed to "The Ladder" from Jacob's Ladder.
And Kaneda will be a giant metaphor.
-
WHAT!?! WHY!?! THEY CAN'T DO THIS!?! I…....wait...
Did you say Garrett Hedlund?
Now….I know it's going to be shit and I shouldn't see it, but.....
Garrett Hedlund. ......I think he can hold me over.....among other things. HEEEEYYYYOOOO!
Sorry.
-
Well it can't be worse than the whole Dragon Ball thing….....right?!?

-
I'll reserve judgement until I see a trailer.
-
Tron Legacy director is perfect for Akira. Hell, this isn't even being done by the people who made the live action Dragon Ball and the last airbender movie.
-
Why do coincidental things keep on happening to me recently. I just watched Akira yesterday and now this comes up again. Weird.
-
In principle I'm not against this. Blade Runner shows it can be done. But we kind of need Ridley Scott of 20 years ago to make it happen. Eh. Long as they make the tumbler bike look cool that's like 50% of the battle anyway.
Most people forget that while AKira had insanely good animation and great music, and is often used as an introduction course to anime alongside Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, and Princess Mononoke (See? This can be cool and serious and adult!) the actual story kind of sucked.
That said… since this will obviously be lacking the insane animation and great music, it's at a handicap position from the getgo, even before Hollywood screws it up. Wonder if they'll make any attempt at all to capure the iconic looks of the characters...
Eh.
I'd prefer they just siphoned off say… 15 million of that budget and made a full blown anime series adaptation of the entire manga.
-
Japan needs to make an Easternized (or WHATEVER) version of Ex Machina now to call it even.
-
It might make a good action movie, but no way they're keeping the bits with the drugs and the blubber and all the deep thoughts behind it. My guess is they'll make it a blandified Hollywood action movie, with something like a race against to clock to save Tokyo instead of the actual story.
But I'm quite curious. -
Okay I went to the movies today and saw this trailer.
I was like "Why the hell does this remind me so much of Akira?".
-
Because it's about a dude with psychic powers going mad with power.
-
Well yes, that's exactly what it was . I just found it interesting that right after reading about this that I saw that trailer and it's so eerily similar.
-
As a sound engineer, the visuals in Akira didn't hold up as well as the audio mixing and the editing of the soundtrack for me, which completely is my favorite part of the Akira film. I don't like it much to begin with, because I'm a fan of the manga (same as why I don't like the Nausicaa anime), but I love the animation and it goes double for the fucking audio.
And so many movies completely just blow it with sound mixing and editing nowadays. It's something that goes over most people's heads and the teams behind it usually just want to make it passable, so there's just a big chance that I doubt Akira the live action will capture the original vibe at all. Because I bet going into the film they're not going to have the people who will care.
But all of that would just be cynical assumptions without Geinoh Yamashirogumi not doing the stellar soundtrack, which just flat out leaves me going
Who can possibly give a fuck
-
I'm ready.
-
i also have an inherent problem with the idea of them remaking a movie about Japan specifically but everybody has talked about that a million times already etc etc blah blah
let's be pig disgusting american
wash in hamburger
etc
-
Okay I went to the movies today and saw this trailer.

Who knows?
This could actually be a teaser for the Americanized Akira movie.:ninja: -

That actually looks decent.
What will become of the new Akira, however, will be anything but.

If Leonardo DiCaprio's name is somewhere in the film's production than I can never be too worried. Honestly the only problem I really have is that Akira was one of the more purely Japanese stories to come out of Japan and so I don't see why America has to make a movie about it. I'm sure plenty of Americans wouldn't be too fond of a Japanese Indiana Jones or anything like that.
I'll just say flat out though, that I wasn't too big a fan of the Akira manga. I won't say it was bad, it was pretty good actually, but the story was a lot messier than I would expect from a so-called "masterpiece of comics fiction" and I didn't find it too deep or captivating honestly. I do admit that Kei was awesome though. And Tetsuo was a pretty good villain and the Colonel was a good character. And the art was amazing and on the whole it was good, just not quite as good as I'd hoped. But that's just me.
Anyway, I'm not as against this as the rest of you guys, I'm going to at least wait until I see a trailer. Considering I was already disappointed with the Akira manga, I can't really be too disappointed with the Akira movie now can I?
Edit: Btw I think DiCaprio means it when he says he's an anime fan. Movies based off of anime aren't known for making a ton of money so I don't think he would have picked them up unless he really wanted to see them brought to life. You may or may not be surprised that a fair amount of big time celebrities are interested in stuff that's generally viewed as nerdy.
-
This is inherently wrong. No good can come of this.
Akira is just so damn Japanese, that it just can't resonate with American viewers in the 10's the same way it did for Japanese viewers in the 80's. It is such a product of that era, of Japan's anxieties about consumerism, about the possibility of a nuclear war going on over their heads featuring the same bombs that leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki, about the rebellious youth of the time, and everything else. If you take away the revolutionary (at the time) animation and sound, as well as all the historical relevance, it just becomes a messily told action-thriller.
which is exactly what hollywood loves to make and audiences love to watch, so there you go.
mark my words, this will be a perversion and an abomination. But the supposedly upcoming Foundation movie will be even worse.
-
I can`t say iam not curious to check it out as soon as it gets released.
-
Executive: Ok, Akira´s Adaptation is a go!
Daaaaaahh! Daaaaaa! Daaaaa! Daaaaah! Da da!
-
Uhmm…...I don't recall personally seing her in anything, but she was in Twilight so........yeah. Can anyone confirm if this is, what I suspect, another bad idea.

We get to see her get crushed under fat? Gold.

Dat Slackjaw!!!!!
-
Also.. this is going to be hilarious if they keep the japanese names, but use an all white cast. Just wow.
-
So I only today learned about this movie's existence. After reading up about the particulars, including today's announcement, I have only one question: How…how is any of this happening?
-
I'm trying to wrap my head around this project.
