Chapter 635: "So Disgusting, You Gotta Fly" - Discussion
-
-
Don't get to big stink over Sanji's Soru technique, since it makes perfect sense here. Don't forget he'd been training with Ivankov, and he learned this technique before he even met him(her?)
All these new moves are great, though I'm most curious if Robin's new move is just giant legs or legs made of many limbs. I can't tell, though the former would be more impressive since it gives her more attack options.
It's called "Mille Fleur", so it's safe to assume that it's at thousands small limbs making up the gigantic limbs.
Edit: Damn, should brush up on my French
-
and everyone though Robin, Franky, or Chopper would be the first to fly lol
-
Zoro's new sword technique and Franky's new seemingly overpowered weapons made me sigh. They would have been alright if they had gotten at least a proper introduction and a proper explanation of how they work. Now they feel like fodder-ish plot devices only made to show that our main cast has actually progressed during the time skip.
But that's what they actually are. The 100,000 are just to show some of the crew's improvement, like Zoro's attack isn't really new or anything, it just developed and that same attack has always been used on fodders, right? And Franky's weapon is more of an upgrade to the sunny rather than his.
The real improvement should be shown in a 1 on 1 fight where you need to go all out.
But I agree with you on the arc development, even though I don't mind the gags, which is why I think this arc would be a long one.
-
@Mr.:
It's called "Mille Fleur", so it's safe to assume that it's at least 1 million small limbs making up the gigantic limbs.
It's mil fleur, don't rely on mangastream translation. mil=1000, so there are 1 thousand smalll limbs.
-
I liked this chapter, showed some of the new moves everyone learned over the timeskip and had a good balance of funny moments (Sanji learning Moon walk).
-
When the previous chapter ended, I was always thinking that Usopp, Nami, Chopper, and Pappug are piloting a tank. I can't believe that I was actually right. XD
Wow, I…love...this...chapter. ;w; -
Uh, 79 million < 100 million.
The strawhats weren't aware of their bounties when robin joined, this only means that their bounties are going to rise soon.
-
Uh, 79 million < 100 million.
He was STILL at 30 million when she joined, or at the very least the whole crew thought that way. Zory didn't have a bounty either, yet. Of course we all know that those bounties got updated right away, but that's my point. The current bounties that the crew has doesn't actually reflect their threat level.
Edit: Ok, I just reread the chapters, Luffy and Zoro got their bounties within the same 2 chapter of Robin joining. but still the crew had no clue about it.
-
Sanji's method for learning his Sky Walk technique could not be more perfect. XD
@Don:
Actually i don`t see another way how she could be able to produce such massive limbs and we saw it already in movie 4 that she creates those giant limbs with many smaller limbs.
But it looks damn smooth and so a bit irritating.
But like you said it could be hinted there that many smaller limbs are used. But iam glad that she is finally using that technique in the manga and with her whole body copying-technique she definitely got the boost after the TS i hoped for :)
Back in Thriller Bark (Ch 476, to be precise), Robin created some (not quite as) giant arms to put Moria in a choke hold.
!
Despite being obviously comprised of multiple limbs, particularly obvious around the elbows, much of the arms were smooth and in the next chapter, when she attempted to break Moria's neck, appeared completely normal save for the expected difference in size.!
So there is precedent for this sort of thing… :p -
@Elektrik:
and everyone though Robin, Franky, or Chopper would be the first to fly lol
didn't ROBIN already fly? it was what only like 10 seconds, but still she did
-
So in this arc, we completely skip over metric tons of character development and world building that might have happened, but we get a whole chapter dedicated to watching the main cast beat up the fodder.
Does anyone else miss the days when the storytelling actually coexisted with the action sequences? Now it just seems like Oda is being forced to rush because "Oh, you can't let the five-year-olds who read your comic wait for the fights to happen, we gotta rush to seeing people beat up other people we don't give a fuck about."
It's disappointing, to say the least.

please tell me what WORLD BUILDING, or character development needed to be done?
-
Sorry man, but since when has Oda explained the reason behind the main characters attacks? Since day 1 Zoro has been doing new sword attacks almost every fight he's been in. I even lost the count of how many sword attacks he has in his arsenal cause every new match usually means new additions to said arsenal.
Doing a heavily improved Tatsumaki is hardly anything to get worked up.Yeah, he's never done that, and that's the thing that most irks me about One Piece. It has so much potential to be an all-around amazing series with a brilliant world filled with detailed, unique abilities and powers, such as the devil fruits and haki, of which we already know quite a lot. Of course you might argue that everything isn't meant to be explained in full detail and that some things should remain mysteries, because they appeal to the public as they are, but here I disagree. Explaining things wouldn't take the fun away, on the contrary. It would appease us who expect to see something else than just characters doing epic things, and at the same time, it could still be funny and cool. Some characters, for example Brook and Franky, are supposed to be more fun than serious, and this kind of not-so-serious mayhem suits them and their powers well, I've got no actual complaints of them. I'd just like to know a little bit more about Sanji's, Robin's and Zoro's newly found ways of dealing with trouble. However, this is just one opinion on the matter. I've always enjoyed analyzing things instead of just going with the flow and enjoying things as they are. Everybody else is free to like these novelties, just don't kill me because I do not share the enthusiasm.
Franky's toys were promised before, and now they're here. They look pretty slick, yes, and they are what everybody expected. Even I waited for something like this, and I haven't got anything against them either. They just seem quite powerful, that's all. Okay, at the moment they're being used against the fodderest fodder ever and thus it's no wonder they're practically invincible, but it's still a bit frightening as we don't know exactly how strong they are.
That said, I'm still waiting for Usopp's plants and Nami's weather manipulation to be used in a fray. Those few cases where we have seen them use their new abilities do not count, because they obviously were only to show their growth.
-
This arc has been one of the least action-driven I remember. . .
Need to re-read it, though.
This was directed at Kylor, btw.

I'm sorry, but haven't we had little hints of the crew evolving ever since the start of the time skip and I don't just mean the new moves and stuff?
Also, we had some world building in the very start of the arc and in the covers every week. The flashback itself gave some nice history for Fishman Island. It's just not what most people were expecting, I suppose? -

-
Robin can stomp me to death anytime.
Wait, nevermind. Crazy chapter. So much new stuff. Really enjoyed it.
-
The chapter was freakin awesome! The Strawhats have a TANK NOW. HOLY SHIT.

please ellaborate, what world buidling.
you mean besides learning about fishman/human descrimination, about fisher tiger, about his being slave and rescuing slaves, about how he was betrayed, about the queen's goal and her haki and her struggle and love for her people, about hodi and his life growing up and his scheming and backstabbing and about the princess and her powers and about vanderdecken and his goals and ambitions and his family history and arlong and hatchi, jimbei, the king, princes, and so on.
there has been more HISTORY and CHARACTER building and WORLD BUILDING this arc than any other arc i can think of.

looks like one of zoro's jobs just got taken away.
-
Love this Chapter! Especially after waiting 2 weeks which was torture :(
Love all the new Abilities and equipment!Sanji will be able to look down tops now
Robin took a page from Luffys gear third with the giant feet there :ninja:
Can't wait to see more new talents as well as More of the Ship's improvements!Love this arc :D
-
Hmm… I hadn't realized this before, but both Aohige and Mangastream translation say that Jinbe was the first fishman to become a Shichibukai. So does it mean we have another one among the current 7, right?
-
Awesome chapter! So sanji knows geppou now? Now if he only learns Rankyaku so he has ranged attacks, he's good for the new world!
-
I don't get where all of this Sanji hate is coming from. Sanji is a tactical and versatile fighter, he's a miniature powerhouse compared to Zoro and Luffy. His new techniques like Moon Walk will help him tremendously in covering more ground in the battlefield. While Luffy and Zoro are great in plowing down fodder and the main mofo's of the arc, Sanji will generally aim for what's important (protecting Shirahoshi) and will take down whatever fiend comes his way.
Somehow we expect so much from him since he's part of the monster trio. I think that it's not only his physical strength that made him so fearful, but by how adaptable he was in past situations.I'm sorry if I sound too much like a fangirl or something, but I dislike seeing people having too much high expectations for Sanji's strength.
This was an awesome chapter.
-
didn't ROBIN already fly? it was what only like 10 seconds, but still she did
That's not flying. That's falling… with style.
-
I don't think Sanji will learn all of the CP9 techniques, only what was natural. And he's gonna have other stuff too. I don't remember any CP9 using blue walk.
-
So Sanji can use geppo now… I was wondering if any of them would learn some of the CP9 technique.. now I cant wait to see them all fight one on one vs Hody and his crew... well they dont seem like they could be a threat but it will be a good showcase of everyone's new abilities.
-

I'm generally confused too. I didn't realize we needed to have character development and "world-building" in every single issue. And we had plenty of it prior to this mostly fun and relaxed chapter so I don't get the complaint.
Anyways, this is the relative calm before the storm. This chapter was always going to be about cleaning up the fodders with some new moves learned. Next week I presume we will be getting into the more 1 on 1 fights with the main fishman crew where the narrative will get a bit tighter and fighting a bit rougher.
-
-
please tell me what WORLD BUILDING, or character development needed to be done?
Thank you for asking. We might have seen a lot more about Fishman Island, like we did with Skypiea as opposed to just skimming through various locations like we did in this arc, Fisher Tiger and Otohime could have been developed a lot more than they were, interesting minor characters like Madame Shirley or Tom's brother could have been more fleshed out, Shirahoshi's character arc never felt complete, the villains could have been made more intimidating and despicable, and a lot of other things that I can't be bothered to remember right now.
Instead we got the Straw Hats beating up a bunch of guys with their new powers. And a tank. How investing.

were not hating on sanji, its just we expected him to learn this since we first saw it probably like 200 chapters ago or whenever kalifa first did it.
so its kind of like finally instead of holy shit.
And then in the same sense its been seen before so its not as cool. be like if luffy grabbed the sunny's cannon balls and threw them at enemies yelling meteor shower. thats Garp's moves, and seeing luffy doing it would not be as cool as seeing something UNIQUE and new to luffy.
-
Most of the chapters we got was to know about Fishman Island and their inhabitants and the story of the island, what the hell are you talking about?
Like people said this has been one of the arcs if not the arc, that is focusing more on those aspects…
-
Nice. I thought they would have a bit more creative attacks but I wouldn't be surprised if Oda is keeping the juicy stuff for later.
I liked that they finally confired that the water shot is indeed a Fishman Karate technique and I am glad to see they kept Jimbei a badass
The bike and the tanks….frankly I don't really see the point. Pretty any Straw Hat has enough fire power to outshine either a tank or a bike but then again I have yet to see their full potential
Zoro. The auto locked tornado is a nice touch. I am glad to see they seem to be saving the new stuff for later
Sanji. No surprsies here. I am just wondering if he has absobred the other techniques. Sanji has always need a distant attack
Robin. Cool move with the legs. I wonder if she mastered her abilities to the points where he legs are whole. During the fight against Pacifistas she seemed capable of fusing her hands into big ones. I wonder if she can do it with the jumbo version as well. I am also pretty sure that by now she should be strong enough to be able to fly for at least a few minutes but I am wondering if she has developed any really new attacks. I am still crossing my fingers on her being able o grow her body and turn herself into a giant. That would be beyon awesome
-
XD Man I was just giggling like a hyena this whole chapter. Just pure Straw Hats here and I love it! My breakdown in a few.

@Oga:
Awesome chapter, Franky's old hair style seems to pop up when he's taking care of business. Is Zoro ever not badass?
Only whenever he gets lost.
-

But many of the characters aren't "complete" yet because the arc isn't complete yet. You are acting like this is the last chapter of this arc.

Depends if he is or was. Was implies that there are more after him, at least thats how I would understand it.
Aohige:
"Jinbe: Humph! I don't know how you gained your power… but it's nothing but a rookie Fishman Karate.
NFPirates: Well yeah, he's the first fishman to ever become a Shichibukai…Edit: Reading that line again, Jinbe sure is badass.
-
If Jinbei always had the ability to fire shots of water like a rail gun why has he never used it before? Meh shouldn't ask. Its like why didn't Iva use Galaxy Wink to take out Magellan. Plot. Plot. Plot. Still a move like that should at least be able to put cause Akainu a little trouble.
???
You see from the previous spread that way more were after him and at the spread you already see 2 of them falling down
The panel still had him hitting a single one multiple times. A bunch getting the same treatment isn't my point.
-
Seeing as how Robin is capable of making giant foots and making clones of herself. Does this mean she could make a giant copy of herself somewhere down the line, because that would be awesome.
-

-What makes you think we won't see more of Fishman Island? What makes you think that all this arc is doing so far – besides the tidbit with "Joy Boy" and the history with fishmen's racial issues -- isn't setting up purposely laughable enemies for the Straw Hats to destroy? They went through 2 years of struggle, it's time to let them shine a bit. I'm pretty sure no one gave a fuck about the enemy the Straw Hats faced almost directly after the time skip being "despicable" or "well-written" -- he just needed to have the quality of being able to have his face punched in.
-Again, judging an arc before it's over. What in the world makes you think we aren't getting more on Den? And Shirley was just confirmed as Arlong's brother. Why are you throwing in your towel and saying "WELP, that's it, Shirley was confirmed as Arlong's brother just a few chapters ago, this is surely all the plot development we are getting for her".
-Fisher Tiger was fine, Otohime could have been developed more.
-Shirahoshi's character arc?
-
HEEEEH ?!!! "Boire à frire" ?!!! O_O
Well, awesome chapter anyway. Jimbe's definitely going to join, and the crew displayed great capacities. Even Brook.
(Damn, lucky pirates, being trampled by Robin…) :ninja: -
Robin would be naked if she made a giant version of herself.
Not really. In One Piee clothes are magical. As we already saw with Sengoku clothing is not a problem when you turn into a giant. And I am not talking about Robin making a giant version of herself. I am talking Robin literally growing her own body to the size of a giant. Similar to how Sengoku did it. I am sure they give some half assed explanation for it but I think this will be incredibly fitting since it would give her much needed strength in both defense and offense would be the only way to include a giant in the Straw Hat crew and having a giant in there seems very fitting :)
By the way what is up with the cover. They seem extremely familar but for the life of me I can't remember those characters. That can't be Foxy right?

Wapol
you know on drum, the guy who eats stuff and then can spit it out into a weapon or whatever. The place that chopper was found.
in his cover story he ate stuff and spit out toys for kids and became a billionaire doing it
-

Wapol with Miss Universe (his wife). In the back are probably the Ishi 20.

Yeah, personally I feel that Skypiea did a much better job showing the readers about the island and its history. :P
also, it would be incredibly lame if Arlong became a Shichibukai. It just doesn't make sense to me.
I am confused about Robin's techniques. If any of her sprouted limbs get damaged, she'll also get hurt right? Seems more dangerous. Brook is being awesome too! yay. I wonder if his sword techniques have gotten stronger. Soldier Dock was a bit disappointing though. I wonder if we'll see both Drum kingdoms at Reverie. That would be kind of awkward.

Well Yes the arc could've been more drawn out, but the minor characters and the locale might still be addressed later on; though I wouldn't really care much for a longer flashback about Fisher Tiger and Otohime tbh…. The Strawhats just happen to come in a time of turmoil, but there are still lots of things that are yet to be unveiled. I'm still wondering about those fish pills myself and vanderdecken and his crew. What about Caribou? Where is he at during all this? and what is he doing or his next move. Then there comes the prediction about FI getting destroyed, what exactly would bring that about and what would happen next?. Then you still gotta consider what Big Mam's reaction about all this would be, cause afterall this island is supposedly under her protection... The arc far from over IMO, and to make it any longer just for a few minor details is not really worth it tbh. There are still lots of things that will happen in the future. There's still the new world and all the stories and arcs to be told.

Ahh, I can understand what you're saying.
I flicked through the CP9 pages but so far I haven't noticed Sanji seeing Jyabura or Kalifa or any other CP9 members do the air kicks. I think if he hasn't seen it in action, he would have eventually learned it by himself. It feels like the Moon Walk might be just a basic or root technique for all leg fighters to learn and adapt into new combos or techniques. -

Hmm… I hadn't realized this before, but both Aohige and Mangastream translation say that Jinbe was the first fishman to become a Shichibukai. So does it mean we have another one among the current 7, right?
It doesn't necessarily mean that, no. Jinbe is the first fishman Shichibukai in the same way that Obama is the first black President. Even after he leaves office he will still be the first black president even if we haven't had another. The presumption here is that the barrier, having been broken, cannot be put back and someone is bound to follow. The same terminology was used to describe Lindbergh as the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic, Chuck Yaeger as the first to break the sound barrier, Gragarin as the first man in space, etc–all before their feats were replicated. The same sentence could obviously still be used to indicate that there is another new fishman shichibukai out there, but it need not be the case.
