Akainu is a marine. As a marine, he's expected to be a moral, upstanding officer as a contrast to the evil and criminal pirates, supposedly above committing atrocities like they do. However, he's monstrously ruthless, perfectly fine with blowing up a civilian ship in the off chance that a fugitive escaped on-board. Akainu is a representation of everything truly wrong with the World Government's rule and Absolute Justice in general: A nigh-unstoppable man who's can and will do anything to achieve what he sees as the "greater good", regardless of who dies in the process.

Well said. Also, look back toward the Marineford arc, at his comments toward Luffy and Ace. Never once does he say their names, just "Son of Roger/Dragon". I think, it didn't matter if they were Marines or civilians, or if Ace did become a Shichibukai. If he knew them and their past, he'd probably try to kill them anyways, just out of principal.

No, It wasn't developped enough. With the exception of Aka Inu, the other Admirals wasn't evolved enough, the same goes for the Shichibukai, who where just here as Cameo character. I don't know that wasn't as epic as I expected it to be.

Aside from time restraints Oda did that to tease us. We have all these big names that Luffy will eventually confront, and he wanted to give us a glimpse at what they're capable of.

For example, we all knew Doflamingo was some schichibukai who could control random people. However during the war we realized that he is easily capable of dismembering creatures four times the size of a giant, effortlessly block Crocodiles attacks, and casually control two of Whitebeard's finest.

That's enough to give you some insight about his abilities, but at the same time have you wondering how the hell Luffy will fight him.

He doesn't abuse his rank. He's not corrupt. He's not a blood thirsty sadist, he was the last admiral to leave the platform and did so grudgingly. He's given orders and you're right he executes them ruthlessly but efficiently. Most importantly he's doing what he thinks is right. He's doing what he's doing because he believes it's for the greater good. I know some of the most horrible acts in human history have been done for the "greater good" but to at least have as much conviction in something that you would stand and defend it, fight for it, and kill for it makes him a far better man than Crocodile who has shown none of that even for the cause he was fighting for.

So what if you expect him to do bad things because he's a bad guy. He plunged an entire country into civil war just so he could get a hold of a weapon to make himself more powerful. Why you have some trumped up bullshit idea of what a solider is supposed to stand for I don't know but Akainu isn't misrepresenting himself or his station acting the way he does. Regardless of that Crocodile is a selfish megalomaniac who was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people and your excuse is that, oh, well he's supposed to be like that. That's why he's cool an Akainu is a dick :getlost:

From the OP verse citizen stand point (IF he know what both people have done):

Both Akainu & Crocodile are evil assholes who deserve to die.

From the Reader stand point:

Crocodile was beaten to pulp, sent to prison, gave up his dream of controlling Alabasta, SAVED THE PROTAGONIST… He IS redeemable till seen doing another evil act.

Akainu: His very own introduction was him KILLING innocents (an act even his equal denied & considered Extreme), Never shown any kind of sympathy to anyone (remember smoker with the little girl & the ice cream OR Sengoku w/ his anger at wg for not announcing about ID lvl 6 prisoners, my 10 cents Akainu will NEVER get a panel like that) and have deep determination to kill the protagonist b/c of his father.
He IS evil till another side (if any) of his character is shown.

From the perspective of someone who "don't give a fuck what happens outside my country", "real world rulers also make genocides, so what's wrong about that" & the like stand point:

Crocodile is a criminal = Evil

Akainu is a Marine Admiral = He do what he does for greater good & he takes no pleasure in his actions = Not Despicable

Confusing post aside, we aren't arguing about the public perception of villains in the One Piece universe. We're discussing who's the most despicle. Plus saying that committing genocide "for the greater good" isn't despicable, that's just plain wrong.

I don't think anyone's saying that Akainu's actions at Ohara weren't despicable (or maybe they are, sorry if so but I don't outright recall it) but it making him the most despicable out of OP's villains seems to be what many have a problem with.

One of the things that makes us more "human," as writers portray it, often, and as we talk about it ("Don't be so hard on yourself. It's only human, after all, to feel that way…") is our ability to feel--sorrow, compassion, fear, whatever.

Thus far we have had several hints that Croc has a tortured past, and that he is capable of complex emotions that have yet to be explained (saving Luffy for what reason? I for one do not believe that he cared that much about letting the Navy get their way. And the scene talking about his wounds with Mr.1 after Luffy returned to Marineford) Yes, without a doubt, his actions were horrible, his intentions were horrible, but we have been lead to believe that there is something there that is redeemable by the way Oda has portrayed the character.

Akainu has never shown emotion, other than contempt and anger, that I could see. You can call that strength, if you chose, though I tend to think it takes more strength to feel and act upon it in the face of going against orders (like Aokiji did with Robin). We hold soldiers accountable for acts of attrocity, because they have minds and hearts of their own. Personally, in Akainu, I think his behavior resembles a form of insanity as he has been portrayed thus far. I don't think he stops to think about what "justice" is. I think he's like a rabid dog, given a target, he will continue, even if he's called off. That is why people are disturbed by him and his behavior. Truly good leaders need to see the greys. He is an admiral, and as such by definition, a leader, yet he seems completely incapable of seeing any grey what-so-ever. That is what makes him frighteningly evil.

In Croc we see the chance of escape, however slight, were we in his sights, if we could but reach and touch his softer emotions somehow. (Noone in Alabasta managed to do so) In Akainu, there is clearly no chance what-so-ever. That makes him less than human; (robotic, of you will), by most definitions.

Not even going to touch the issue of who is most despicable, though, lol

Spandam for me is still by far the most despicable, followed by the Tenryuubito.

You'd be bored of seeing the rest of the series if we lost some of the remaining mystique of these huge figures in the series. PARTICULARLY Akainu, Donflamingo, and Mihawk, as well as Sengoku.

That's the reason why I spoke about a Toned down war. It could have been Awesome, but for some longetivty reason, it wasn't. Story telling skill or whatever, I don't care, the arc wasn't as epic as it could have been, that was annoying to me period. Plus, even without that, the arc isn't beyong reproach.
And I don't moan especially about Mihawk and Doflamingo since even the shichibukai we saw in arc before weren't showed enough and were just here as cameo characters as well.

Oda kept thing for later, that didn't add automatically suspens to the marine ford arc.

Arlong: took over a town and fleeced it of all it's resources before setting up the residents to to fleece other towns. Not that despicable really, wrong but not that despicable given that Governments do this on a daily basis. In the end the people found strength via Luffy and revolted.

Crocodile set up a quality of life in the places he wanted people and made it unprofitable to live in places he didn't want you to. The despicable part of his 'plan' was actually caused by a third-party and that barely even started to unfold before it was stopped.

Enel was/is a man who cared about no one other than his own goals and intent on mass genocide despite no real gain.

Foxy basically just wanted friends to play with.

Spandam / CP9 spent years undercover protecting the townspeople and it was only when attacked that they fought back against the people they served to protect. This was more of a case of the blindness of absolute justice combined with ambition more so than despicable behaviour. Especially when the only real despicable behaviour was the treating of someone on their way to be murdered.

Moria took peoples way of life away from them the world over but ultimately left them with their lives.

Tenryuubito treat everything and everyone like shit but this wouldn't be possible without the backing and some would even say encouragement of the WG/Marines.

Aka Inu again is a case of absolute justice being impractical, but not a case of being despicable.

Were we reading the same comic? because I remember Arlong also shooting a little girls mother in the face right in front of her, and then "promising" that if she works for him and pay's a ransom she can free her village. Also note that Luffy didn't inspire nobody. After Arlong tipped off a greasy marine that Nami had stolen money they said "fuck it we're going to fight for our freedom or die trying". And since when the fuck did doing what the World Government does make a horrible act respectable?

Even though CP9 and some other various marines have been shown as bad, destroying the headquarters and killing off the captain of the two things bringing law and order to varied parts of the ocean is a very bad thing. Blackbeard's probably caused more indirect deaths than any of the other villains mentioned.

Akainu is a villain from the perspective of the Strawhats but overall in the overall scheme of things in the OP world he is a "good guy". He kills pirates. Pirates are, in essence, bad. Sure he is a grade A asshole and I'm not saying he is a good guy by any means, he almost tore apart his fellow Marine Colby (which was something I was 100% on board with at the time) but compared to guys like BB and Croc who kill selfishly and don't blink an eye after starting a civil war or dropping a bomb of thousands of people, he is not even close to the despicable level they are at. People consider him that way because he killed Ace and tore the WB Pirates apart but he was one of the only Marines doing their job, which is to protect the peace.

In the end the most despicable villain has probably been BB, he's done everything selfishly, killed WB by ganging up on him like a bitch, stabbed a crew mate in the back for a DF, and cries like a bitch and rolls on the ground every time he gets hurt…

BB does what pirates do, and also for ambition. Aka Inu does what marine does and to the extreme. Croco same as BB. Enel pseudo pirate, but he wanted to commit genocide out of whim so he takes the cake. Tenryuubito being right behind him as they also take life on whim (Doc Q does chance and for all equally), Shiryuu should have been up there. He comes after the tenryuubito because he does in criminals and people he has a thing against, but still kills unnecessarily.

This is definitely true, but I wonder how many people were even thinking or remembering that instead of Ace and Whitebeard when they were voting him as most despicable? He's still nowhere near the despicability of the Tenryuubito though.
