Guess that the studio execs couldn't tell a hit from a piece of stool and just wing every choice they make.
"Oh Magic 8 Ball, Should we cancel this new series or allow it to continue?"
Shakes Magic 8 Ball
"Signs point to yes"

When the choice is to cancell a succesful and critcaly acclaimed show and fire the staff and then go right ahead and start a new show on the same concept then it truly is a case of Leifeld you genius.
Even though it just came out, i find True Grit to be a bit over rated, i heard people saying it deserves best picture but aside from the newcomer, 14 year old amazing new actress i found it to be just ok.
I don't think a character has to be sympathetic to be compelling.
No it doesn't but you have to feel something that allows for you to understand or connect or even know why you're loathing a character in a movie. I couldn't do that with anybody in that "Scarface" and, while you know why they do what they're doing, the performances and what happens takes away from it.
Bill, in actuality, Spider-Man 2 was damn near ripped from the pages. I'll give you one thing, Tobey was a little weak, but I can excuse it because selecting someone else probably wouldn't have endeared the public. While Ock was always a bit silly, he fits as an early, weird but serious villain in a series that asks you to suspend disbelief more than any other. I put this over Dark Knight as best superhero film, if only because it attempts to put heart where TKD has that slight pretension.
While Batman Returns is far from perfect, I dug it and quite disagree with you. Where SM2 is an arc adaptation with variations in detail and a switched big bad, Burton's Batman is like no other. That seems to be the bulk of your dislikes, but that in and of itself is not a bad thing. Batman has had so many intepretations, there's nothing lost by starting from scratch. Besides, he let R'as die in Begins.
Oh and I know where you're coming from Tokoro.
I didn't wanna double post but my system has length limits.
Calling Tobey macguire a little weak is the understatment of the year.
Mind you the year has only just started.
Haha, I was gonna take out "little" but forgot. Regardless, they needed the guy from the first one, which everyone but me seems to love.
Know the feeling. I always wonder what kind of special cut people have been watching.
Cause the one i saw was nothing to write home about.
I think Tobey Maguire will make a perfect 'Nick' in Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby.'
Spider-Man 2 was pretty fucking fantastic.
Spider-Man 2 was pretty fucking fantastic.
It really was. The movie was so good that even my old uncle (who knows nothing about spiderman) watched it until the end.
During the phantom menace, he had 2 hours of good nap (I could hear him snooring despite the THX sound).
A great movie should have the potential to be loved by non fans.
Spider Man 2 was a really good superhero movie. One of the best.
Spider Man 1 is overrated though mostly because it's corny and Willam Dafoe's Green Goblin is fucking retarded.
Yeah though I really don't give a fuck about any of the Burton Batmen movies. Never have never will. Boring, and stupid. And have absolutely nothing in common with the Dark Knight Returns and I'm really goddamned tired of people acting like they are similar.
Really.
I didn't think Spider-Man was terrible, but most of its good came from the fact that it was preceded by Spawn and followed by Daredevil.

Tobey a little weak?
When Spider-man got his powers he got confidence, he was a wuss. He was a wise-cracking, guy that evolved out of his nerdy shell through unorthodox means. In Spider-man 2 I didn't feel the presence of of confident Parker he still fragile, and weak. Perhaps its not Tobey's fault.
I wanted the Peter Parker portrayed in Spectacular Spiderman, I didn;t get that in that film. I'm sure Spider man has felt uber-depressed on him not exactly being golden in the public's eye but . Spectacular Spiderman handled Peters doubts of being Spider-man in a much better fashion.
I really, really want the writers on spectacular to write the next film. They knew the character.
I put this over Dark Knight as best superhero film, if only because it attempts to put heart where TKD has that slight pretension.
I give you one thing, Its more of comic-book film then the Dark Knight.
While Batman Returns is far from perfect, I dug it and quite disagree with you.
Fair enough.

That isn't as bad though.
I have no problem with folks taking license with the characters as long they don't deviate from the heart of the character**.** The many writers who have reinvented him at least stayed very true to his very basics, they still have the rule of getting the character right no matter which alternate universe. Batman in the comics in his early years isn't that formed in morals yet either, though later years he does develop.
Batman killed and smiled. While certainly Batman has many interpretations but many of them( from what I've read) have never have crossed that line and enjoyed it.
Many of of his interpretations at least stay true to his basics, though with vastly different expressions. Sure Batman killed originally but never with enjoyment, and he evolved. Batman in that film didn't feel like a hero, he felt like a crazy murderer taking up a costume mantle. Frank Millers started from scratch and wrote Year one Batman(when he was still sane.) and introduced the element of Bats falling in a Bat-cave while younger. I thought that was a great idea and adds something to the Batman mythos. I don't have a problem with folks taking liberties with the character as long as the essentials are there. Batman was child's response to an injustice in a good sense even in his original incarnation he once remarked he didn't like to take to life. When Batman killed Harvey Dent he did it to save someone. I have remarked that Batman in the comics would never take responsibility for murder and even mentioned as gripe. I'm in conflicting moods with this one , but it wasn't something as bad as killing a member of the Red Circus Gang by setting him afire with the Batmobile’s exhaust flame or . He later stuffs some sort of bomb down another’s pants and pushes him into a sewer hole blowing him to bits and enjoying it….
Perhaps I just didn't see the magic in returns as much as you did.
Returns is a dour sparkless completely unlikable movie that's idea of magic is Danny Devito living in a Disney Ride looking sewer, and a woman hitting her head and acting goofy.
Magic~!!!
I think one of the appeals of Spiderman 2 is the great iconography of the action, and it had a traditional comic to film brought to life camp in it. It also has that great train sequence, which is perhaps the best thing in the film.
In contrast the Dark Knight is a gritty, very tragic, story with an upbeat ending to it. With an iconic villain dominating the show.
Both tones work for the for the respective characters the films are based on.
The reverse would be a travesty.
The Dark Knight Returns is a great story. I just don't think its a good future for Batman. Batman Beyond, for all its faults, had a Batman in the future I liked.
Tim Burton in general is very overrated.
Someone please explain to me how spiderman 2 is amazing. I'm not saying it's on the level of spiderman 3, or transformers 2 but the story drags, the fight scenes have so much potential but are lack luster aside from the train scene and the character development of peter parker isnt great at all, it's mediocre at best. So how is it "fucking fantastic"?
Why the flying fuck would Burton have Catwoman revived from the dead by being licked by cats?
That's retarded. And then she suddenly gets gymnastic skill's? Its like Tim Burton couldn't think of something less retarded. Batman isn't that realistic, but thats…

I think the key behind why the Burton Batman film worked (well the first one) was that it was one of the only honest super hero attempts of the era and because of the ambiance and feel that he gave off. Yeah there are faults with the movie and Jack Nicholson just ran amuck as himself in Joker makeup, but to my generation, who was too young for Donner's Superman and was in college by the time we got stuff like the X-Men and Spider-man movies (and Nolan's Batman movies…which were more wiping away the mess Schumacher starts dumping on top of it...though I do think "Batman Forever" is slightly underrated), the '89 Batman movie was our superhero movie. No it isn't perfect, but the way it was done just worked for the character at that time and it did it's job.
Now "Batman Returns"...that's just Burton being in total creative control making it stupid, just like Schumacher circa-"Batman and Robin". That felt more like a Burton movie than Batman with the disturbing Penguin and nutty Catwoman and Christopher Walken being unintentionally hilarious like...well, most Christopher Walken performances.
BTW: Personally I find some Burton films overrated, but considering he still made "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" and "Beetlejuice"...and I did like some of his concepts in his Willy Wonka more than the original...I forgive him.
I also liked Batman Forever. It has its charms.
@Tokoro:
the ambiance and feel that he gave off.
That's another thing, this is crap. That movie has none of that.

Encephalitis caused by Rabies has some weird effects on Ms. Pussy's body. :ninja:
@JERK:

I was speaking more of the gothicness and dark feel. Maybe it isn't Nolan's or even Timm and Dini, but somehow worked for one movie. (then overdone, made a tad brighter but somewhat cheesy, then downright gay…until Nolan brought it back under control)
By Cheesy you mean Val Kilmer
and Gay = George Clooney. Ahihihi
Batman and Robin should have been titled BATMAN THE MUSICAL.
Y'know 89' Batman has his faults. But I loved the score by Danny Elfman, I feel it totally fits with the feel of Batman. Its one of my favorites. Burton' s Batman is hybrid of Frank Millers Returns Batman and the original 1939 incarnation, in which kills with a gun.
While Nolan's Batman is mostly based on Millers Year One, and with a little of Year Two in the mix. As well as some Danny O Neil's, Jeph Loeb's. .
Don't know why everybody is always hatin on Kilmer.
I thought he was a good batman. Prefer both him and Keaton to Bale.
Batman and Robin should have been titled BATMAN THE MUSICAL.
Yeah, that pretty much sums up "Batman and Robin", complete with purple gorilla costumes and nipples and Alfred's (not)-niece Barbara. (at least Nolan acknowledged she's Commissioner Gordon's in his movies…well the first one but she was a kid)
And I was more talking the movies than the Batman in the movie but you did at least identify the movies.
Keaton is the best man behind the suit so far.
Bale is…uhmm...was that really him in the suit?
I just like Jack Nicholson :ninja: .
The only thing I liked about 'Batman by Tim Burton' was the tone and style of it all. The people in te streets, the final battle occurring atop an old cathedral. Nicholson's Joker scared the shit outta me; though I admit it has been years since I saw it so I may be mistaken about some things.
There are some films which can be awful; or unfaithful as hell (see Goblet of Fire) but get the tone amazingly and be wonderfully stylistic.
I finished watching Inception 10 minutes ago and i thought this movie is awesome with all this hype about it.
My conclusion is that Inception is overrated, its fucking boring and it drags like hell.
! After one hour it was obvious that the whole movie was just a dream
! After one hour it was obvious that the whole movie was just a dream
! Well, it's not. It's an open ending so it's left to the viewer wether the movie was a dream or not. There are hints for both possibilities

Explain yourself.
God no. Is there no place on earth where i can escape this argument.
I swear if you sit down at any resturant the couple on the table next to you are going to be knee deep in a discussion about whether or not that stupid top kept spinning.
I just want to know how he got to a specific conclusion. I just accept the ending at face value because it is a great ending.
It's an open ending. Everyone has their own interpretation what the movie was all along. End of discussion.
Inception is a good movie. The best holywood blockbuster of these last years. Basta. I don't know about the hype though, so I can't say if it is overrated or not.
@GumGumBattleAxe:
Scarface DEFINITELY.
You have no soul!
For an overrated movie, I choose this one:
All my friends think it's a good movie, when it made me puke. Ok I read the book before I watched this but even then it was a poor poor movie.
God no. Is there no place on earth where i can escape this argument.

Stay online and read manga all day.
Maybe its an open ending or not, everyone can make their own conclusion.
Thats not relevant for my view of this film.
Through all this hype i expected something mind-fucking and overwhelming with philosophical meaning, but i got something boring.
A few points that lead to my opinion:
! * After one hour i got the feeling that the whole story is just a dream
! To say it clearly Inception is a good film, but not as awesome as the reviews or internet opinions made it.
! The falling slowly and stuff is there to show how the different levels move at different times. Why would they show the van falling into the river in 2 seconds if they still haven't finished the stuff happening on deeper dream levels?
I agree that they didn't go wild enough with the dream stuff, though.

I know the meaning of the truck scene for the story, but imo there were to many scenes with the truck falling.
edit:
Another topic, why is there so much hate for death proof?
The film is awesome solely by the point that Tarantino said with it: Fuck you CGI.
Death Proof doesn't deserve the shit it gets. The missing link between Smith and Tarantino.
Batman:
Returns
Now I'll admit I'm biased, having seen both in theaters very young, but I wouldn't be so quick to throw them under Begins. That wasn't so great.
Star Wars Movies .
The Catwoman mess in Batman Returns is just way too much and takes away from her character. Pfiffer does her best but Burton's interpretation of the character with all the cat reviving (and subsequent freakout in her apartment) and S&M/horny crap just takes away from it. I get there is always a matter of sexual tension in her character but Burton overdoes it…though at least it's not Halle Berry. I sort of hope that if Nolan decides to finally use Catwoman, he does it right. (and not go overboard with some of what Burton did)
Back on topic: I always thought "The Spy Who Loved Me" was probably one of the more overrated Bond movies. Yeah a lot of people sort of look down on the Moore era but they always make this his best...prefer some other movies with him over that.
