If we get a mermaid she's gonna have to split her fins.
I still believe the crewmate hasn't appeared yet. Since Fishman island is the last place before the New World itself, the crew will be complete before entering.

when kokoro saved the gang at enies lobby, didn't she suddenly have a tail again, which then split once more when they got on the ship?
maybe shirley decides to keep her tail together because she prefers to look more slender and 'youthful'?
just because it seems like she's sensitive to what others say.
Shirley should be either 29, going on 30, or over the age of 30, no doubt. Simple math, really.
Tail splits at 30.
"When she was still young" = No less than 4 years old
"predicted age of pirates" = About 24 years ago
"the following year pirates showed up" = 1 year prior to Age of Pirates
Assuming she was 4, an age where children start making thoughtful statements beyond simple wants and needs: 4 + 24 + 1 = 29, going on 30. Keep in mind we are months beyond the exact "24 years ago" mark, and unless it was on her 4th birthday that she predicted the age of pirates, she should be months into her 29th birthday (assuming she was 4). Meaning she could turn 30 at this point, were she not already.

There's also taking into account the obvious fact that it's highly doubtful that their fins split automatically the second they turn thirty. The process is more likely gradual and could even deviate by a couple of years more or less.
Who wants a bet that we get a Shirley flashback showing her as a kid predicting the pirate age? She could feel guilty about it like it was her fault for predicting it or something. Or we could have people trying to take advantage of her abilities after.
I don't see Hyouzou joining either. I mean come on, we already have 2 swordsmen, do we really need another one?
Fishman karate plz.
one thing I do wonder, is that Oda made it a point to bring up that mermaids and fishmen do intermarry and did explain how them having kids works. I wonder if it'll be a plotpoint later on in the story, even with any NN. Like a fishman whose tragic past involves a mermaid wife/girlfriend who was kidnapped and sold into slavery or something like that.

Possible… but I think it was just to explain that mermaids don't have to hook up with mermen... and fishmen don't have to hook up with fishwomen. It means family members don't always have to resemble each other, but also it it gives him a free range on variety.
Its interesting though now that we've seen a bottom half octopus and a top half octopus. Because Hachi still got extra arms, but the merman equivalent got a bunch of legs.
Also it means, for instance, Arlong could have a twin brother that doesn't have his features at all and instead has a tail.

Or have a brother who is a fishman, but has a different fish base.
Still, I do wonder that if fishmen can have mermen fathers or mothers, and vice-versa with mermen, how is that they seemingly different cultures? The only thing I can figure is that miscegenation is legal and is accepted for the most part but isnt particularly common, kinda like it is in the United States with interracial marriages.
A fraternal twin I'm guessing, since if they're twins they'd share the same DNA and both be Fishmen?

That may just be a side effect of practicality of build. Camie is getting around okay by using a bubble, but she still can't walk around freely. It'd simply be easier for merfolk to just live in a very water filled area (like her kitchen had water up to her waist) while fishfolk have an easier time on land. (They can swim super great, sure, but walking is probably more natural.)

Well, yeah.
And conveniently enough, we've been shown that actual twins do exist that arry the same species, from Camie's little Quintuplet friends.
And that the baby carriage only had one baby probably means single birth is common, rather than broods of eggs or whatever.
Maybe different fishmen/mermen races (species) reproduce akin to their real life animal counterparts, some in egg form (teenage mutant ninja turtles, fish), some in birth form (ie Sharks)

And presumedly the woman's body gets the say in how birth actually happens in a cross-bred couple–.

All Fishmen are mammals, Mermpeople are probably the same as well. But in an SBS it has been specifically stated Fishmen give live birth, no eggs. Merfolks most likely exactly the same.

Exactly, plus there are some fish that do give live birth as well.
Plus if each fish species reproduces differently, it'd be very difficult for two fishmen/mermen to reproduce together, and even more difficult for mermen/fishmen marriages.

Well I wasn't talking about how they walk, but how both races are described in One Piece. One good example would be how fishmen can eat meat, but merfolk won't.
I am going to go by the pokemon standard and beleive that the mother decides if it is a merman or fishman.

Did you even read the explanation??
No I did not read it
I love how there are quite a few canidates, but i also love how this number dwindles down as the arc goes on. im throwing my lot in for Hyouzou for now, but i'll see how my opinions change next week
Shirley has a small chance. I still put my 2 cents on Jinbei though.
^_^
Okama twins for nakama.
Even if their is no candidate so far and sadly Mr 2 is away
I would love to see an Okama now on the crew. It would
A: Bring 100 % comedy as Sanji being raged all the time cuz of hsi trauma and Zoro mocking him for that but the Okama is fainting over Zoro all the time xD
B. Each one would have a beloved and popular Okama and the Sanji will be Okama shit would stop… So both sides would be glad.
Sanji is homophobic.
@THE:
Sanji is homophobic.
No he isn't just disgusted and has a trauma…But being chased by them for 2 years would make me that as wel^^ He still was touched by Mr.2 sacrafice. but that is off-topic
Still an okama would brign some lulz into the crew and specially for Sanji. but so far the only good candidate has dissapared and won't join

That was a joke.
I want an okama mer/fishperson.

An Okama mer"maid" xD
lol…..............................youre just kidding, right?
Do you see me laughing? I only laugh at Sanji's misfortune.

I wouldnt be suprised since you have it in your avatar, I see so now every character that gets a name or is badass will be SH material even if its a swordsman and we already have two.
There are 0 new candidates, I dont see where you are seeing that many/few candidates, the number is 0.
I don't think weapons matter to Oda. When we got Brook he was an inferior Zoro, even if it wasn't a katana, so he had music and a DF to spice things up. It's not like we have to have a lancer or a mage. I think "roles" in Luffy's crew is a bit overstated. Ussop never stands at a safe distance pelting enemies from afar, nor does Robin try any sneak attacks. The SH crew always fight side by side.
As long as a person's fighting style is unique, he/she will have SH potential. Personally, I'd rather see another weapons specialist than another DF crewmate.
Another swordsman would have to have another way to fight, and Hyouzou's poison/merman traits fit the bill. As long as he doesn't hold more than 1 Katana, he's unique in my opinion.
Even if it was another swords(wo)man, we already know that Zoro will always get his share of fights.

im not saying that any of them have a fighting chances just yet, im just saying that some of the characters introduced have the potential to becoming new crewmate canidates, a position that wont change until the arc is progressed and some characters get obviously crossed out and new characters arise. i was just simply stating that we were introduced to new characters that may or may not, in the end, become a strawhat
and besides, just because he has a sword dosnt nessesarily make him a swordsman….......................

No. that guy is hyped for Zoro… And our last member already was a swordsman... So no need for a third one.
it would be funny if VDD Joined, I mean he lived all his life undersea…so his knowledge of the Outside world is worst than Chopper....We'd be able to have Many comic scenes i guess.
People who fight without a weapon: - Luffy, Sanji, Choper, Robin a
People who use weapons: Usopp, Zoro, Brooke, Nami, Franky…..
So i think that the next person will be someone who uses fishman karate :P
People who have a DF: Luffy, Brook, Chopper and Robin.
Weapon users: Usopp, Zoro, Brook, Nami and Franky.
Martial arts: Sanji.
Seriously guys, with only one guy that uses martial arts and how fishman karate has been hyped I don't see Hyouzou joining, as cool as his character design is.
So far, I think no one's going to join in this arc.

For now, yeah. I don't see anyone joining.
Hyouzu and Shirley were barely introduced and people quickly start making lots of theories with so little info. What's the rush? A trip around the world if you correctly predict who's the next SH?

I see some good points for Shirley, but her interaction with Luffy wasn't promising at all. That might change now that she's hostile to Luffy now. So who knows.
Remember we still have to figure out where Nami, Robin and Franky are. I think that if a fishman joins they will have to interact with Nami due to the whole Arlong fiasco, not so much with Luffy, etc.
my list from best chance to worst.
1. badass fishman karate guy/girl
2. No new member
3. Fan-service mermaid (kaimei or another mermaid)
4. Caribou
5. Hyouzu
6. Sarume (LOL)
How is cariobou better than anyone?
that was a biased choice solely because I like his devil fruit
I think you're giving him too much credit.
I always thought Sarume had the best chance…
I'd like Hyouzou if he had anything more then a sword. I'm hopeful, cause he really does look awesome
Some of yall are spending too much time on this topic. Just enjoy the adventure.
I'm sad to see that the person (people) that gave Sanji blood are just throwaway characters. If there is anything I'm disappointed about this arc it was the handling of Sanji's condition. They jumped quite far into the future from Ch.609-Ch.610. I expected there to be a big struggle with trying to find a donor and some more world building about the Fishman/Merman mentality but Oda skips all of that and breaks the rule (that no Fishman would give blood to a human) he set up so easily.

Well, it was kind of a stupid reason for sanji to lose that amount of blood anyway.
And Caribou is pretty interesting, if i say so myself. Im sure he is going to play big in this arc. We'll see what happens.
The rule was upheld since some human pirates gave the blood or were those twins not human?
Either way I didn't take it serious when he was losing the blood and was happy to see the outcome. That issue was just there to remind us of he human-fish/mer race relations and reveal to us how Fisher Tiger died.
Oda pretty much made up for it by making everyone focus on the fortune teller and the lil fun facts about fish and merfolk.

Oh whoops. I guess they are human. Even though, Oda went out of his way to make Sanji's comical blood loss into something serious by attaching the stigma and donor search to it. I just expected to see more of the donor search than, " WHOOPS, JUST TRIPPED INTO SOME HUMAN TWINS THAT JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE THE VERY RARE BLOOD TYPE WE NEED. OKAY BYE NOW." But whatever, it's no big deal.

To be more specific I meant "I don't see anyone joining for now…", since the swordsman dude looks more like one of the antagonists and shirley like a support character. I don't see in them any "SH material" at all.
