the buggy and mr 3 filler ends here thank god. the fight when they were moving was good. marineford is gonna rock
-
They kept repeating several scenes in this episode like Magellan's "huh" and Buggy stirring up Impel down from the inside.
The animators were really lazy this time…
-
every time i watch an OP ep like this and then go to watch a current ep of Naruto or Bleach i get very annoyed that Toei got to do this show. sure the VAs are perfect but this kind of animation is a disgrace to the source material, whereas the anime for Bleach and Naruto actually improve it.

I'd rather not have year long fillers in One Piece too T_T
-
Man, that was horrible. What a waste of Tate. They didn't even end it coinciding with the manga cliffhanger. Stupid.
I wish they saved him for next week, much more going on in that chapter.

Maybe not a year long, but it would be nice if we had a couple of months of straight filler… but then when the canon starts again, it's done right god damn it. No fucking bullshit pacing, I'm talking some Dragon Ball Kai shit.

That says more of how strong One Piece's source material than it does of the anime adaptions. Comparably, One Piece's anime adaption is much stronger than Bleach's or Naruto's (though you couldn't tell such from this particular episode).
-
That director sucks
-
-
I like that they put Esoteric in the title.
And Magellan sure is a force to be reckoned with -
Croc's voice sounded normal this week.
Wonder if they'll redo last weeks lines for the dvd.
-
And here I was willing to take Tate off my hate list if he repeated that fantastically drawn episode that he did last time. Nope he sucks.
-
@Thousand:

Tate doesn't get to decide how much material an episode covers, he has to work within Toei's bullshit pacing. Tate is probably the best director/animator this show has, it's unfortunate they had to waste his talents on such a dull episode.
When Tate is given full creative reign over something, its fucking amazing:

Or Naruto Shippuden or Bleach. Say what you want about the "crappy" source material but at least the anime does it justice. Whereas One Piece takes great source material and turns it into crappy dragged out anime. Everyone hates filler-arcs but they're the only way (apart from putting the show on halt altogether) to ensure canon material gets done right.
-
I think you hit the nail on the head, this arc has been slow as shit in the anime to make way for the very fast past MF arc
Sacrificing a good arc for an even better one I guess…..
you're going to be so disappointed
they're going to drag mf just as much -
This post is deleted!
-
Not a good episode, like everyone said before me lazy animation, dragged on when it shouldn't have.
My big complaints are.
Magellan walks too fucking slow
Iva vs Maggellen dragged on and on
Inazuma cuts take too long
Buggy and Mr 3 are not nor were ever funnyAt least ID which is turning out to be a really slow arc is almost over.

And I'm pretty sure Tate could have done a much better job in how he directed the episode than a long ass recap and repeated Buggy filler. Quit forcing this all on other people, Tate was responsible for this episode too.
Oh and that fight you showed me sucked ass. I could barely follow it with all the excessive movements.
-
Only problem with that video is the horrible song that suddenly starts and makes me go 'pff what the fuck is this'
Or Naruto Shippuden or Bleach. Say what you want about the "crappy" source material but at least the anime does it justice. Whereas One Piece takes great source material and turns it into crappy dragged out anime.
Nope, they're dragged out too. Bleach in particular is doomed, they'll never open a decent gap again.
-
Well that's your taste, I hate all that lanky movement. Like when Mushroom guy and Luffy were having an infight. A straight punch with focus on the characters who are connecting fists would have been much more satisfying than that "dancing" to make that punch.
-
I enjoyed this episode a lot. thanks to the awesome animation. Although it's a pity such animation was wasted here.
Sadly the pacing in this episode wasn't so good, so I can't give this episode a perfect score. Other than that it was very enjoyable.
I've said it before, Tate shouldn't have done this chapter, since it's not interesting.Tomita's parts were good here, but very random. I think he really loves to animate Sadi-chan.
-
the first half was total crap. artwork was bad too
-
You know, Tate hate aside, this episode really wasn't THAT bad. I liked it more than say 445 (that's the one where there was that mass prisoner group still shot right?). It's just the Iva parts that were painfully dragged out…
Can't wait for next week, Jimbei's gonna be in action and I loved his antics in the water.
-
@Thousand:
Yeah the art sucked as usual (so that Ivankov episode WAS a fluke unfortunately)
The art in this episode certainly was not Tate's best work, but it was far from sucking. Tate's style substitutes detail for thin lines and fluid movements, it creates some really awesome visuals:
And I'm pretty sure Tate could have done a much better job in how he directed the episode than a long ass recap and repeated Buggy filler. Quit forcing this all on other people, Tate was responsible for this episode too.
"Animation Director: Naoki Tate"
Just because he's in charge of the animation does not mean he has say over everything in the episode. The animation director is certainly not in charge of the recaps. I can assure you that if Tate was allowed to do whatever he wanted with this episode, than the first half would certainly not suck so much ass. If you go watch episode 404 you can see Tate at his best. He clearly was in charge of that entire episode and even managed to make a episode based on a single chapter not seem ridiculously dragged out.
Oh and that fight you showed me sucked ass. I could barely follow it with all the excessive movements.
It's really not that hard to follow. I really don't get why you can't appreciate how nice and fluid the animation is. Are you one of those people that hates movie six too? Tate is a fantastic animator and director and it really shows in both movie six, movie 9 and whenever he gets to do a segment or full episode on his own terms:
0pRwLA81B94
(not all of these clips are great but Franky v. Fukoro, Luffy v. Lucci, Zoro v T Bone and Luffy v. Bluno all show show off Tate's talents.)
EDIT: Oh and also, no matter how good the animation director is, if they're working on a limited budget, the animation can only be so good. (For example; last weeks episode, great director, not so great animation throughout.) Its pretty clear this episode was not one that Toei splurged on.
-
Why are you discussing animation with Batter?
-
what a shitty episode, the second worst episode of ID and one of worst in OP.
-
Wow, animated episode? This shit? Thats just insane. And the art? What the fuck happened?
-
Nope, they're dragged out too. Bleach in particular is doomed, they'll never open a decent gap again.
Bleach dragged out. That's a good one. Yes the length of the show is dragged out. Dragging stuff out is inevitable however If you skip the filler arcs it moves like a train (well as far as Kubo allows it). One Piece on the other hand has opted for dragging canon out. Unless they give it the Kai treathment, Thriller Bark and Impel Down will always be boring drivel in the anime. Every long running show gets dragged out the question is how. Do you get filler-arcs or canon eps/arcs like this.
I see you've conveniently left out the last part of my reply but that's the choice. Either ruin the source-material by presenting it with 10 minute staredowns, or put the show on hold either by airing filler arcs or by simply not airing the show at all for a while and going back to the source-material when you've got enough room to do a part of it justice with a halfway decent pacing. Bleach and Naruto are getting this right. One Piece sadly does not.

animations were nice-

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100222165039/onepiece/images/e/e9/Horu_Horu_no_Mi.gif
A style I said I've hated over and over again because of how it sacrifices the quality of the art. I hoped from the last Tate episode, things would change but alas they did not. BTW, that little gif is from the only GOOD Tate episode (not that I think that a single gif means anything but…).

"Animation Director: Naoki Tate"

And it doesn't mean that all the bad stuff can be blamed on someone else.
@The:

No actually, you can't assure me of anything. You think Tate can do no wrong so anything bad MUST be because of someone else.
@The:
If you go watch episode 404 you can see Tate at his best. He clearly was in charge of that entire episode and even managed to make a episode based on a single chapter not seem ridiculously dragged out.
That was the episode where Luffy and the crew were separated right? The one where the Straw Hats looked especially ugly and the Luffy breakdown was ruined because it focused on squirming on the ground rather than Luffy's face as he beats his head to the ground.
@The:
It's really not that hard to follow. I really don't get why you can't appreciate how nice and fluid the animation is.
Because it's distracting and at times ridiculous (like Luffy changing direction in mid-air wtf?). I can't appreciate the fight because of it. Mixing good animation and slowing things down when hits are connecting and focusing on the art in those instances would be far better in my opinion.
@The:
Are you one of those people that hates movie six too?
Yes, god yes on so many levels.
@The:
Tate is a fantastic animator and director and it really shows in both movie six, movie 9 and whenever he gets to do a segment or full episode on his own terms:
He would be if his art didn't suck so much ass and if didn't let himself carried away with the animation at times. I agree that usually he's good at directing though except for this episode.
@The:
0pRwLA81B94
(not all of these clips are great but Franky v. Fukoro, Luffy v. Lucci, Zoro v T Bone and Luffy v. Bluno all show show off Tate's talents.)
Saw that video before (XMURADX posted it like a zillion times), showing it to me isn't going to change my opinion.
@The:
EDIT: Oh and also, no matter how good the animation director is, if they're working on a limited budget, the animation can only be so good. (For example; last weeks episode, great director, not so great animation throughout.) Its pretty clear this episode was not one that Toei splurged on.
My problem is the ART not the animation. I do not deny that Tate's animation is great on a technical level (if impractical and exaggerated). but he sacrifices art because of it and that's his call not because of the budget. He does it because that's his style and I hate his style. If he improves his art to even decent levels, he'd probably be one of my favorites. Now look at last week's episode which I believe Ishizuka did, right? Good, decent animation mixed with very good art. That's what I want. Tate is great animation and bad art. You need a balance betwen the two, maybe a little nudged in one direction, but not completely focusing on one aspect.
And I've had this conversation a million times before.
-
@Thousand:
My problem is the ART not the animation.
Always good to see someone who knows the difference. This is always a hard thing though. Great animation requires the drawing of more frames and sadly you're always faced with deadlines. Drawing more frames in the same amount of time can only mean the artwork is going to suffer. This also works the other way around spend too much time working on the artwork and you'll have fewer frames which will make the actual animation look stiff. This is the bane of all long running shows with a limited time and money. You always have to pick your poison.
-
Umbrella man, don't waste your time with TLC.
This episode was as good as the previous episodes of Tate. It's just that Tate have done less key animation compared to his previous episodes. And the animators working with him this time had different styles.
-
I enjoyed this episode a lot. thanks to the awesome animation. Although it's a pity such animation was wasted here.
Sadly the pacing in this episode wasn't so good, so I can't give this episode a perfect score. Other than that it was very enjoyable.

Why did I just know you were going to say something like this?
@XMURADX:Shut up you!!! Tate is perfect, he can do no wrong!!! It's someone else's fault waaa waa waa
Translated to reasonable accuracy.
-
Am I like the only one here that doesn't give a shit about animation?
-
@Thousand:
Why did I just know you were going to say something like this?
Cause at least I know what the word "Animation" means?
Tate is an animation director, he is not the episode director or the writer, he have nothing to do with the script, storyboard, etc. You idiot.
-
I would've hated this awfully-paced episode if not for Tate. Seriously, Tate's animation rocks my socks. Terribly annoyed by the staring contest and the stillshots, but the awesome animation as expected of Tate made this episode good for me.
-
The pacing was fine, I didn't felt the episode drag at all. Pretty much it was a good episode in my opinion.
-
This episode was like an eye-candy.
Yet, it was boring and slooooooooooooooooooow.
But animation-wise, it was golden. Running scenes, the bunny guy had his ears flop as he ran! Amazing.And am I the only one a bit shocked by 2 animators working on the same episode? O_O Did that ever happened before? Nobody seems to care here…
And yes, I can't understand how they waste amazing A+++ animators for boring episodes like this and screw up important scenes.
-
That was the episode where Luffy and the crew were separated right? The one where the Straw Hats looked especially ugly and the Luffy breakdown was ruined because it focused on squirming on the ground rather than Luffy's face as he beats his head to the ground.
Wrong.
And am I the only one a bit shocked by 2 animators working on the same episode? O_O Did that ever happened before? Nobody seems to care here…
Only one animation director. If there were two, they'd both be credited. Key animation, on the other hand, is what went on here and there usually is more than one key animator. Remember stuff like how Luffy's second bout with Hannyabal was animated far better than anything else in that episode, or how Luffy's nightmare of Kuma a while back was done in a completely different style from the rest fo the episode? That's the sign of a key animator. (though oftentimes the animation director himself does some key animation as well. Tate did the Largo fight, for instance)
While not a great episode, this is far from One Piece's worst. Anyone who disagrees can go marathon 302 and 428 until they break.

Actually 3 great animators. The episodes have lot's of animators ranging from 3-20+.
Tate, Tomita, and one more animator that worked on lot's of episodes of Gurren Lagann.
-
Luffy ran like a girl. That's what I dislike about that specific animator's style.
-
Tate is an animation director, he is not the episode director or the writer, he have nothing to do with the script, storyboard, etc. You idiot.
So who is it that ends up with the final directing decisions? I do NOT think that low budget means bad flow, I felt like a few little things would have given this episode more weight, especially with sound effects and music choice because for me it's not about the art or the fluidity of the animation that matters but the tone of it and this ep had zero atmosphere, to me. Whereas, outside of the life-sucking filler, with Naruto and Bleach I always get a sense of continuity in the tone and direction.
-
So who is it that ends up with the final directing decisions?
The episode Director, he even effect the overall look and feel of the episode.
-
While not a great episode, this is far from One Piece's worst. Anyone who disagrees can go marathon 302 and 428 until they break.
302 wasn't a bad episode, it was much better than this…
At least in the beating up Marines filler there was a lot of action and not a stupid staredown. -
Well, I couldn't stand 302, since the art was incredibly mediocre, and the animation was the most stiff and lazy it had been in years (seriously, Lucci being ''thrown'' into a wall as well as the Tower of Justice being destroyed looked absolutely laughable). The animation director was a regular for the Naruto anime (infamous for its QUALITY), if that helps put things into perspective.
-
Luffy ran like a girl. That's what I dislike about that specific animator's style.
This and those useless movements.
Dunno why people actually do like this animation style, it reminds me of the crew separation, and movie 9.
Crap… -
We like it because it's incredibly fluid and fun to watch.
-
Exactly. ^
God, I don't want to even remember 302. Everyone looked retarded in it.
-
Toys out of the pram time for TLC yet again huh.
@Al!naJames:
And am I the only one a bit shocked by 2 animators working on the same episode? O_O Did that ever happened before? Nobody seems to care here…
Although there weren't two animation directors working on this episode, this has been done before(rarely). 317, a post Enies lobby filler, had 4 AD's.
