Hopefully more people will be asking that in the days to come.
A website that hosts Raws, scans and trans for tons of series. Has forum aswell. I didn't use it much so others may have a better idea than I.

Man, I thought I was gullible…
Just a small thing for those who were wondering. Mangastream has, as of yet, NOT been affected by this according to one of their latest tweets. The scans should be out normal time.
Man, I thought I was gullible…
More than you know, I was in on the joke with him.:ninja:
This is pointless. The only negative thing that could happen, and negative is relative, is that we go back to getting scanlations later in the week. Most likely we will just have scanlations a few days earlier than raws now.
Big Business needs to learn that it is futile to fight IRC and the internet. You cannot win. You can shut down one site but three other sites will pop up in its place. The current sites we use may shut down, though i doubt that, but even if they do others would pop up within a week.
i guess it is due to the general sales in Japan.
They had a record low sales in 2009.
I guess Shueisha are expecting their sales to go even lower by 2010 to 2012. I am not expecting the world economy to go better as well.
I have seen footages of Toyota laying off people due to their low results. Maybe these teenagers are the sons of these kind of people. They have to save money by any means and they probably read manga online.
If things get worse, I expect that they will even try to shut down english sites.
I cannot blame mangakas to defend their bread who would not.

If a mangaka in JUMP is getting a low income, it's not because of online downloading. It's because JUMP isn't paying him enough.
If a mangaka in JUMP is getting a low income, it's not because of online downloading. It's because JUMP isn't paying him enough.
Ah ok.
Maybe Jump pays him less because their manga sales go down. Logically, to compensate you tend to lower the wages. Since teenagers have less money, they might find try to save money by reading online.
I remember one of Oda's assistant got layed off by jump. The wife send him death threat.
Usually, when you fire people, it is to reduce your cost.
Yeah, but it's been stated before JUMP costs like, $2.50 a week.
Even my jobless self could scrape up that amount of money.
So it's not teenagers trying to save money, it's teenagers being lazy.

True. It is really affordable.

I remember Jump ordering to delete a lot of videos of One Piece on Youtube.
Even the small scenes of 2 minutes get taken off. They are not even full episodes. People got their account deleted for small scenes.
Jump people are business people as well. Their purpose is to make money.
Almost everything resolves around money.
That is just my opinion.
so do we still have anything to read?
i'm lost. Could anyone please explain to me lol

that could explain all the parody films, OP songs and anything involving OP were showing up as Suspended or Removed:blink:
http://www.tradingeconomics.com/Economics/Unemployment-rate.aspx?Symbol=JPY
According to the link, japan unemployment rate is around 5 percent (Not to mention the US owes them a trillion).
It becomes really bothersome when it reaches 10 percent.
However, from my Geography course, declaring that you are unemployed is a source of shame. So the numbers could be a bit higher.

My God How Cheap is that o_O thats under £2!!!!
Ever likely they don't make any money, here in England you'd have to pay about £10 for something that size…..
I HATE rip-off britain ><

Yeah but an assistant being let go probably has zilch to do with that.
Assistants changing or being let go isn't some daring new cultural practice.

"kinda understand how she could be a bit upset. I mean, I'm sure she bragged to her friends about how her husband was working on the greatest manga in Jump but… To then go and send death threats? >.> She's now my own personal enemy >.>...
IMO, I am not sure if Japanese brag about their status like we do in the US.
Personally, 5 percent of uemployment is still ok. When you reach and go above 10 percent. It becomes very serious.
She should not have sent these threats. It is not like Japan is like Sudan or Chad.
I doubt the recession and rate of unemployment in Japan is deterring people from buying JUMP. Yes there are probably a few penny pincers cutting out where they can, but I think for that low price most people can afford it.

Are you sure it was jump, because I'm pretty sure it Funimation.
For all the AMVs, parodies, and clips, if it wasn't removed due to musical copyrights (damn you WMG), it was taken down by request of Funimation.
Meh. Life goes on.
I have time.

yeah you are right. There is even a thread here.
Its the Japanese which will suffer due to it.
Not exactly. It's the Japanese living outside of Japan, and scanlation groups without their independent source of RAWs that suffers.
Japanese living in Japan can stop being cheap asses and walk 2 min to a local train station magazine stand, a convienience store, or a book store to pick up the latest Jump issue for 2 bucks.
No tears are shed.
Recession my ASS. You know what the minimum wage is in Japan? 630 yen per hour in the countryside, and 790 yen in Tokyo.
And pretty much only the part time young students work at the absolute minimum wage.
Hell even back in 1995 I could find a part time job in Osaka for 1000yen/hour which I applied for in the 3 month stay I was visiting.
A Weekly Jump costs 240 yen. That's less than half an hour of work at the lowest paying job in the boondocks surrounded by farms and woods.
Cry me a river. The cheapest lunch menu at a Matsuya fast food restaurant frigging cost more than that.
That is the take of another perons on mangahelper news.
Then they're making wild assumptions based on….nothing.
Well it's not like most of us have any control over the issue. Personally it wouldn't be the end of the world if I couldn't read manga every week. I have plenty of other things to do. Though I will say that the fan translations of the anime and manga are what have drawn me closer to buying things related to anime/manga and japanese culture in general. I can see where they're coming from, but no matter what their intentions this kind of thing typically alienates people. I see the message as "DON'T READ!" I read fan translations simply because the translated manga available where I live is woefully behind the current plot, and fan translations I've found to be more in tune with the feel of the manga, and from my limited knowledge of japanese seemingly accurate. Honestly it wouldn't make a huge difference to me if we got scans 2 weeks after publication and sale in Japan. As for the residents in Japan, I can't speak for them. If I were a resident of Japan, I'd just buy the manga, though they do need to start thinking about digital formats.
ok mangastream said the chapter will be released today.bravery or what else?
that article made me lol. regardless of where you live whether that's in japan or overseas people will always choose to buy something or obtain it for free somehow. begging people to stop still ain't gonna stop people from obtaining it illegally. heck in japan u can go to the convenient store and read a whole tankoubon or any weekly magazine if u wanted and the store people don't give a damn. if they wanted to really prevent things why not shrink wrap all the manga EVERYWHERE including the 2nd hand book shops? before begging the public to stop they ought to do everything they can before begging people to stop lol.
I'm kind of fuzzy on the chronological order of events here. Some people are saying that the statement was made because of the person that mentioned chapter 400 on Kubo's twitter before the chapter was released, but like I read somewhere else, it shouldn't be because of that because the statement released in that same issue so it was already going to come out. But the same person who made the remark to Kubo also posted a link to Raw Paradise saying that the chapter was already out and that caused legal action against RP. So how much of all this is true?
And also in that conversation between the person who made the dumbass comment and somebody calling him/her a dumbass, apforum was mentioned and I'm curious about what the fuck is with that as well.
Wait what? Someone get me a link to where this forum was mentioned.

CTRL+F apforum it's in that discussion between the person calling the person a dumbass for tweeting Kubo about the chapter.
The original argument is in Malay I guess and the person translating the argument can't understand what the person's saying very well.
Edit- It probably is just the translation of the argument is wrong or something, but I was kind of curious about it because I was like wait, I would remember seeing something about that.
There's no reason to worry. Mangastream has their own raw provider, and despite the fact that raw-paradise was the best source of raws, it doesn't mean they were the only source. We won't see any change in our One Piece releases I'm sure
Thanks.
Hm… doesn't look like it says anything important about us.

That was Indonesian, not Malay.
alvriri was a woman. I know this because i track her twitter, facebook, and friendster.
LONG STORY SHORT
Don't panic people of the world.
You'll still get One Piece in your own language well before the paying Japanese public.
Don't know what i should say, how stupid can somebody be first they congrat Kubo before the 400th chapter is out and now they have a App for their illegal scans.
I have read about 2 pages and will go back and read the rest.
I will be short with my opinion. It is nice they "ask" people to stop it and so on. In reality tough this internet business is what makes OP popular throughout the world.
In my country and I deduce in majority of others OP would be practically unknown if not for scanlators and alike.
Not to mention here in EU so called piracy is basically regulated it is not exactly legal, however in majority of countries it is not ILLEGAL as well…WHEN we are talking about piracy for your own gain.
Anyways, many companies have already admitted that so called piracy actually adds to their marketing and in general to their income (via indirect measures)
I am positive that Who ever has license for OP products here in my country (no matter how small of a share it is) has gained substantially more than they would if not for piracy, cause like I said we would know poo about OP otherwise.
It is not a big subculture here like in Japan (otaku stuff or just anime and especially manga)
So I say, this is new age we are in and they are falling behind it. It is actually funny how some attempts like this actually achieve something, for what the fault goes like Greg has said, to Japanese people, who are too kind/naive/moral like for the rest of the world and such attempts actually produce some results.
Anyways someone else also said it well. I will not care about it untill I get to read OP weekly. Their moral judgments won't work on a student of Law a guy who enjoys reading OP and doesn't have a bad conscience about doing it for free (like I said, even from a legal point of view there is nothing to it at least in EU)
Let me use this opportunity to thank every raw provider, every translator and scanlator and in general anyone who doesn't give a damn about just his own backside but does things for community as well.
Humankind would have got no where without cooperation and globalization and before I end this speech one last word for any one of you who say I would buy it if it was available and so on...
Don't even mention it...who cares. Because it is not available and as long as it is not we are done talking. When it becomes available and another rant like this is spoken than we ll talk about what is moral and right, untill than resume your life without a breath of worry
My opinion only: Blue
ok mangastream said the chapter will be released today.bravery or what else?
"Two-thirds of stupidity, one-third of bravery."
But seriously, they are quite courage if they still stand to their usually schedule and will bring the chapter 5 days before it´s published in Japan.
As pitiable as the message from the editors of JUMP sounds, they are right. The japanese people can buy the JUMP quite cheap, so it shouldn´t hurt their purse to much to by one magazine every week, but instead they read it for free online.
And because of that i can understand the editors, but still i don´t have a bad conscience about reading a new chapter online. The only reason i read OP online is because i want to know what´s happening next and the wait until the next volume in my language is published is for me personal to long (i´m still buying every volume, that get´s puplished). So i have looked for an other opportunity to follow OP.

apparently, Viz is going to start, in summer, with releaseof one piece at the same time as japan.

Statistically, 1-5% of AP's population should be that dumb. So, anywhere from 200 to 1,000 posters on this forum would make the same mistake!

Source, please?

Uhm. Yeah. That's why they've been releasing 5 volumes a month since January, and why the Jump Magazine skipped ahead to Impel Down. Of course they're trying to catch up and get a simul-release going.
If we're getting scans five days before publication, doesn't that mean Shueisha has some house cleaning to do?
If we're getting scans five days before publication, doesn't that mean Shueisha has some house cleaning to do?
No. Because the book are drawn and edited and put together nearly a month in advance. And then they go to the printers, where it takes a week, or two, to print. Then the books ship out to warehouses and distributors and super markets, which takes another week or two, and it is during this period that people who have jobs that give them access to these things, start getting them ahead of time.
On top of that, stores get the books on Fridays and technically, aren't supposed to start displaying new books until Monday, but they sometimes sell them to regular customers on Fridays anyway. (If my understanding of Greg's pickup schedule is correct.)
So, not only are stores sometimes releasing issues days in advance, the shipping process adds nearly an entire extra week of potential bootleggery. Then add in timezone differences.
So basically, when we get scanlations on Wednesday or Thursday, we are actually getting chapters that won't be out officially in Japan until the FOLLOWING Monday. We actually get spoilers before the PREVIOUS chapter officially comes out sometimes!
We get One Piece chapters, raw scans or fully scanlated, a solid 4-6 days ahead of the book actually being sellable in its native language market.
Take a moment and think about that.
Yeah. We're completely bootlegging and illegal in that regard. And of course that much of an advance, free, scoop is going to cut into sales. And Shueisha is COMPLETELY in the right to want to crack down on that. I'm completely on THEIR side in this.
The whiny way they phrased their editorial, not so much. But their main point? Incredibly valid.
Up to the point where my being overseas and not being able to read the language prevents me from getting my fix and the American release being nearly a decade behind… but I still buy the domestic releases, and the artbooks in japanese, etc. etc. still supporting as best as I logically can, so it balances out.
Incidentally, once upon a time Oda said in an SBS that he's about 3 weeks ahead of whatever chapter is being read. He was most likely referring to this particular quirk of printing and shipping, that all Jump authors are prone to, and NOT posessing a buffer, which is how many people interpret the statement.
A little late anwser, forgot about this thread existence.
@robbybedfart:
No they don't.
Are you serious? Of course they do. The number of pages varies between 200-232 pages since volume 1 and its 208 pages - which is actually less than vol. 57.

Did you miss the entire statement one line AFTER that, where I explained thats because, before, it would have 11 chapters sometimes, and now it will ALWAYS have 10? (barring another year of continuously short chapters) Due to paper and printing costs? Its always going to stick closer to 200 pages now, its never going to fluctuate to 232 again.
@robbybedfart:
No they don't.
And that's BECAUSE Oda put his foot down and made a conscious choice to do something because he didn't want the price to rise.
For a while Oda was occassionally throwing in a bonus 11th chapter because he felt it was a better stopping point there.
He was informed that, due to rising paper costs, from now on, having an 11th chapter would increase the price of the book like, 25 cents. And so he said, in SBS, "well, from now on its just always going to be 10 chapters. The bonus 20 pages were nice, but not if it ends up costing people extra, then its not a bonus."
And for the… two years? and 8 volumes since then? Its been 10 chapter volumes. (And its why they cliffhangered on Zoro being Kuma-ed, and not all the Strawhats being Kuma-ed, which was a MUCH better cliffhanger)
Actually. The most recent actually had 11 chapters again, but thats because they were 15 page chapters all year, instead of 17 or 19.
Ok, I agree that they logically lose (a lot of) money. Ten thousands of people reading their mangas but don't pay for it.
I actually would buy it IF some companies really would license the manga series in my country or at least in the US. Some mangas are out here too but ARTIFICIALLY slowed down [..] E.g. the biggest companies here release a new volume of a manga series almost every six to eight months. Some do release monthly or every second month but that became rare here.
The biggest problem is by far the "WHAT is suitable for our market?"-question. Most look out for mainstream so in 95% of all cases shxx is bought and the good stuff is left in the east. OR the worst (and I came across that very often) in the middle of the series the publication is stopped. What the …?!
Finally they complain about stalled sales or no sales at all. Seriously, if you bring out a manga volume every six month do you really have to be suprised about your sales?
It's about the same for anime (at least here): they really bring out a twelve episode anime series on TWELVE DVDs for Eur 5,99 each! (extreme example, but it actually is out on the market!)
No way that I ever would buy this [..] Actually I buy my animes in the US, even with shipping it's FAR FAR cheaper than buying it here. Yea, I kill the market in front of my door, but with this policy what would a sane human do otherwise?
And stuff like Crunchyroll, I gladly would pay for an abo to watch anime "legally" BUT they do a country check (based on IP) and say "No dude, in your country a license for this series was sold, so you don't have the right to watch this series on OUR US server!" .. and always searching/paying for a proxy is a pain in the axx.
Well, at least if a series comes out in the US I import them if I liked the series and think it's worth to have on DVD (e.g. I did a USD 800,- (incl. shipping) order with my friend last year just for anime DVDs).
The will to buy is given but the opportunities to do so are (currently) NOT.
Currently I am learning Japanese, so I might import small manga series (up to twenty volumes) from Japan sometime in the near future.
