Finally, a new voice actor to add to the master list on the FAQ topic… er, that is, can someone tell me who Hina's VA is? I won't be getting my set until I go home friday, lol
Unofficial Funi DVD discussions

-
Still loving Smoker's VA. I don't think the line was delivered too fast.
-
There are already people on my YT channel complaining because FUNi "changed" the "Eat Shit" line… God damn people...
-
Well, I did hear a 'kuso' in the original Japanese, so it's not entirely out of the question they could have (should have?) used it.
-
"Eat shit" is a pretty nasty line in English (plenty of parents wouldn't be thrilled, for sure). Their decision seems like a perfectly reasonable alternative. No meaning is really lost.
-
Just tossing in my two cents…
Both "eat shit" and "go to hell" have equal nastiness in my eyes. Choice A is just plain down to earth degrading, and choice B is about a place most people associate with being degrading, so the change don't bother me.
I got minein the mail today, but didn't have time to start it, and the little time I had to watch tonight was spent finishing up my Soul Eater DVD. I'll post my opinions on this set once I've started it.
EDIT: Oh btw, which episode has the commentary on it?
-
I would preferred "eat crap", but it's infinitely preferable to what viz used.
What do the subs use?
-
Eat crap sounds lame, though. If they weren't going to use "Eat Shit", then better not to use it and use something else.
-
Dub Smoker is retarded-awesome. Can't get over it. That clip was aces, and that actor is getting a free beer if he ever runs into me, that's for damn sure.
@Zach:
A lot of your questions get answered or addressed in our Mike McFarland interview (can you guys wait till Sunday?)
You're interviewing Our Lord and Master?! Shit, son, I am there! Ask him what it's like to be so fucking great!
-
Smoker tellin' em to "Go to Hell" is still 100 Times better than 4kids version of "Tell 'em to shove off!!"
ALL Hail the awesome Funi-dub!
-
Egh, it really doesn't pack the same punch, especially with the whole dramatic tension of Hina gasping while asking him to hold his tongue. I mean the line itself was chosen to be less shocking. Hardly changes my opinion on buying the DVD considering it's already in the mail.
What would make me reconsider however is nearly everything else about that clip. A lot of voice work on the last set was really phoned in, I would be expecting them to get better not worse. It's getting to the point where I'm becoming self conscious about watching the show because everyone delivers the same throat cracking scream every five seconds and I'm certain it annoys pretty much anyone in earshot. When pained, angry, determined, or simply loud, there's not even much of a slight deviation in tone from most of the main cast. And the supporting characters are getting about as flat as anything I'd expect from 4kids.
I don't think many of us here need to reiterate how much any of us love this show, but I do enjoy it quite a lot. And I do happen to be of the opinion that Funimation is the best at bringing over these big Japanese animated series, but the piss poor production levels of these DVDs is breaking my heart and really hurting my enjoyment of the series.
Maybe you all can tell me I'm crazy and none of you are the least bit displeased with the things I mentioned. However, in my ears pretty much all of fifth voyage was incredibly awkward and I'm just hoping that was a low water mark, things have to improve from there. Maybe these sets aren't breaking records, but they're clearly selling, and it's a gigantic kick in the teeth to have to have rushed records with cast members who couldn't tell you the plot on top of all the other sacrifices they make to keep down costs.

We did the interview three weeks ago. Once you watch it, you'll know the answer.

I wholeheartedly agree with you.

In this specific event you can get them early elsewhere as well:
http://www.animecornerstore.com/onepib1.html
Animecornerstore normally gets early delivery(though not as early as rightstuf).

No worries.
There's a "Search this Thread" button at the top right of every thread, if you choose advance search you can do a search by username and find every post you've made in a specific thread, fairly useful for a fast moving thread.

First Clip!
qVpLFxvPMRI
It's Smoker's Go to Hell line.
NICE. Thanks for the upload.
BTW, who voices Hina in the dub? -
Hina is played by Jennifer Seman.

Hina is played by Jennifer Seman.
That's what she said. Wait…
About the clip: Man that's good dubbing. Go to Hell works perfectly.
They handled it a lot better then Viz did. Who even says "shove it" anymore? Last time I heard it was on an episode of The Simpsons... from 1992! -

Why does my order still say processing? This is very frustrating! :(

Frankly, I'm hoping Crocodile's epic burn to Tashigi (and the Marines) stays in as-is. I know that'd be a bitch to keep in the mouth flaps and such, but it was such an awesome piece of dialogue…!

What is this burn you speak of?
-
Why don't you go back to marine HQ and discuss your justice.
Something like that.
It was great.
-
@Badass:
What is this burn you speak of?
Lesse if I remember it correctly…
"Dogs that run away to lick their wounds have no right to call themselves 'Justice.' That is the rule of these seas. Now, why don't you go back to your Marine Headquarters and discuss your 'Justice' some more?"
-
^ OH NO HE DIDN'T

Egh, it really doesn't pack the same punch, especially with the whole dramatic tension of Hina gasping while asking him to hold his tongue. I mean the line itself was chosen to be less shocking. Hardly changes my opinion on buying the DVD considering it's already in the mail.
I have to disagree wholeheartedly.
I don't think it was chosen to be less shocking. The point is, Smoker is telling off his superiors. In both cases, a Swear word was used to emphasize the effect.
If you walked up to your boss and said "Go To Hell" and your buddy walked up and said "Go Eat Shit", and you both actually meant it (IE it wasn't clearly a joke), the result would be the same. You'd both get your asses fired.I've always been apathetic towards the level of swearing, because IMO, Blood and violence shouldn't be treated as though they're somehow more OK than swear words, so any kid who shouldn't be seeing the word "Shit" also shouldn't be seeing Zoro losing buckets of Blood fighting Mr. 1. But I know what the people who complain about the level of swearing are getting at because, at the end of the day this is a KIDS SHOW.
In Japan, it is perfectly fine and acceptable to have a main character of a Comic/TV show for Small boys say "Kuso" (Crap/Shit) all the time. Watch the Japanese version and pay attention, Sanji says the word like its going out of style.
Meanwhile, if you watch a Kids' movie in America, you can get away with throwing the word 'Hell" in there without any ill effects (Willy Wonka said "Hell" in the original) but "Shit" is pretty much a no-go. It's the same as "Kuso" in Japan.
In America, the market where the FUNi dub is produced and directed at, do you think you'd ever see Optimus Prime going "Autobots, we're in Deep shit here!". No, Not in the slightest.
So to be more accurate would actually be something LESS "Shocking".
Again, the point is supposed to be that he's telling his superiors off, not the exact word he uses to do so. And "Go To Hell" would get you fired just as fast as "Eat Shit" would if you said it to your boss, so it's just about right. As for your thoughts on the acting, I have to disagree again but that's more subjective. Personally though, I think they nailed it barring a FEW Lines that were off here or there. But people act like the Japanese never make this mistake either, and I'm sure if I scoured the Japanese version I could find several lines that sounded funny to me too. This is a 450+ Episode series after all, getting every single line perfect, in either language, is impossible.
-

…There was that one time in the transformers movie the G1 movie
-
The s-bombs already when dropped twice in the dub and it's not like the dub is being aired on TV, so there really wouldn't have been a problem with using 'shit', but alas it was not used and the line isn't really any less severe in the context it is used in anyhow.

Once was Sanji muttering it at Little Garden, but when was the second time?

Ok, you'll never see Optimus Prime say this:
"Shit, we're in deep trouble. Bumblebee, Jazz, get your shit together, we're leaving! Those shitheads won't mess with us!"
You couldn't get away with using the word as frequently as Sanji uses it. The point is the word has completely different weight here than it does there.

I'm not trying to argue that the word "Shit" should never be used in the dub, just that the word "Kuso" doesn't have the same weight in Japan as the word "Shit" does here, so to say you need to keep "Shit" to keep the "Weight" of the scene is wrong.
The Weight was there in that Smoker was telling off his superiors, FUNi even still used a swear. I think Viz's "Shove off" sounds a bit awkward, but not because they didn't use a swear, I pretty much think that anything that would get you fired for if you told your boss would be accurate for the scene, because that was the point. Smoker insulted the brass, he should have gotten some kind of punishment (Hina was worried he would, "don't do it Smoker!") But he didn't.
Also, watching Luffy vs Croc Round 2.
Luffy's line to Croc went like this:
Croc: Do you know who I am? I'm one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea!
Luffy: Oh yeah? Well if that's the case, then I'm the EIGHTH WARLORD!
Everyone: … -
Does it have to be "shit"? Seriously, damn, it could be translated differently you know. It doesn't have to be the most vulgar thing in the book.

That would be just too funny for something trying to be serious. But ya I agree with ya.

Also, just a heads up. I've ripped more clips and I'm gonna put them together and upload them in about a half an hour, I just have to do something first.
Next Clips:
Happiness Punch
Bon-Chan's Farewell
The Straw-Hats' farewell to Vivi
Usopp interrogating Robin, including the scene where She uses her hands to help Luffy imitate Chopper. -
Rin: it makes sense that Smoker could have gotten off for droppin' the big 's' because they wouldn't want any knowledge of thier punishing a captain they were awarding to get out. Letting it slide would work out for them better in the end.
@Mikey:

Well, he's litterally being both impolite to his superiors and saying 'kuso'. I don't know what the full sentence is, but telling them to go eat some Donkey Kong dung isn't going to be out of left field, and in fact is a bit more expected.

Kuso literally means feces (and all its english synonyms), so even if Funi decided to have smoker say "Tell them to eat Poopoo-doodoo" It would still be accurate. It would have the exact same meaning as "Eat shit".
-
Are we really arguing about "OMG the japanese version had this word in it!"?
Here is a clue, a good translation isn't a literal translation. The dub is supposed to sound good and natural to people who SPEAK ENGLISH. Telling someone to go to hell is more common here (at least where I live), thus I believe it was a good decision.

Sorry if this was asked, but wasn't "Family" supposed to be in these episodes? Or was that something KF did?
-
It was something KF did. The just took clips and put the song behind it because they felt like it. I know it sucks because i wanted to hear it without all the noise in the background. BTW I'm getting anxious to see some more clips, since it looks like its going to be a while before rightstuf gets me my order :/.

A little part of me was hoping she'd say Happiness Punch in a Falcon Punch kinda way…
-
Yeah the cussing thing was subjective too. To me, it just sounds softer, but like others have said, it's the mixed levels that throw us. Doesn't seem so consistent. Like they went way overboard in the beginning, and then scaled back a little too hard, but this is so minor. Just personally given the two options, I first heard it as "eat shit," weighing the two now, I think I'd still prefer that.
As for your thoughts on the acting, I have to disagree again but that's more subjective. Personally though, I think they nailed it barring a FEW Lines that were off here or there. I understand it's going to differ person to person, which is why I'm askin' people to tell me I'm wrong, I mean if no one was noticin' the same shit I was, I might not be totally happy, but then at least it's such a widespread problem. And yeah I can understand the Japanese cast is going to sound like the awkward cast of a kids' cartoon show to a Japanese person. But I also believe there are huge differences in the way they approach it, and I think those come across clearly in tone and emotional content.
It's a very silly kids' show, and it doesn't need to be treated with an ounce of solemnity, but I think there's less of an effort to really respect the work. Which is very double edged as we've been getting these sets fuckin' fast. But I mean, I preordered fifth voyage and still had to wait for a second shipment, so I believe these things are selling. I just hope they'd put out the best product they could.

Next Clip, Bon Clay's Farewell in Alabasta
zvvBQi0cBZE
EDIT: Whoops, wrong title card. Fixing that now.
EDIT 2: Fixed -
Wow, that was done beautifully. I'm impressed.
-
The accent… or rather, what they did with his voice... it's different. Not unpleasant, but different. I like it, it just seems to fit so well with the character. I look forward to seeing Bon Clay in all his glory on the full DVD set.

Another Clip! They're just rollin' out now!

I have to say though, this reinforces my belief: The Farewell scene with Vivi was much better in Movie 8, and I'm not talking about the dub, I mean Toei did a better job of it in Movie 8.
