That makes sense…but the year would have to be spent on retrieving members, and I'm not so sure Oda would skip that.
"Luffy's Last Adventure As A 17 Year-Old"
-
-
you can do a lead in with chapters showing a little bit of there experiences on the islands that they where sent and how they got back
-
That would work; I meant I just didn't think it would be a kind of, "timeskip: all the crew members are back and look Luffy's blank-years-old now" type thing.
….I'm hoping it'll be an end-of-the-arc moment, where Luffy will be watching Ace sail away with his Whitebeard buddies, someone will mention the date, and Luffy will think, "I'm eighteen, what a shitty present." (half of that was theory) -
I could totally live with Oda going Ocarina of Time on us. What we do know is that no matter who wins this war the world of One Piece will change, whether it becomes a land of justice or a land of no fear to hold powers in check. Personally I like the concept of a time skip allowing us to be reintroduced to the One Piece universe all over again.
Also we need a time skip at some point to get any real closure on Coby
-
OP has always been the manga where the heroes stay on their course and slowly but surely grow. The beast part is being able to stay with the cast and watch them move on from adventure to adventure. A timeskip would be horrible for that reason. I don't want no fill in the blanks when it comes to OP. Since he only spoke of Luffy and not the rest of the crew, I'm hoping it's just Luffy sitting out for some time while Oda pens the rest of the crew's stories and how they get back together again. That would be the most ideal.
This isn't anything like Naruto where skipping time has no consequence. OP is a world of constant adventure. We'd miss a lot of it over a timeskip.
-
I agree; it's not the kind of story that a timeskip would make better. But how much story can you get out of learning Haki? A few chapters on it would be fine, but if a timeskip would make it work, okay. On anything else, no. Regardless, it'll still take ten more years to finish the series.
Who would teach him Haki, anyways, since he has the special kind -

Hancock, who also has the King's Disposition.
-
I also find the time skip idea not really appealing. :< But MmmBug's theory is pretty interesting! :D Luffy aging about 10 years in a short period of time, would be rather amusing. And it could be blamed on the hormones and/or Luffy's excessive use of Gear Second and Gear Third. I could imagine premature aging being one of the side effects of the hormones Ivankov injected in Luffy's body.
-
But coming back to reality, the only men who sound like girls are 1: eunuchs and 2: members of the transgender community.
You'd be surprised.
-
I don
t want timeskips, seriously I don
t know all you are so excited about that, timeskips sucks, I prefer to see the character`s development day by day -
i don't really care if there is a time skip as long as its no fucking naruto type time skip. i mean naruto even after being trained for 3 fuckin years by juraiya still got his ass kicked and guess what!? he still needed more training, wtf?! if thre is a time skip, please don't be naruto-ish!
-
i don't see how instantly aging 10 year will make him ready for the NW
-
blackbeard is going to take down shanks. i just know it. luffy will end up warring with the other two emperors. other younger pirates will gain power and it will end up luffy, blackbeard and maybe another one or two other guys as the new emperors. i would prefer it if it were luffy, blackbeard and doflamingo who ended up being the new emperors.
This is rather doubtful seeing it that Luffy's promise to Shanks involving becoming better then him, which in a Shonen Manga means it's part of the "surpass your idol in a direct comparison" concept. Defeating the guy that defeated the idol would be an indirect approach.

I think that Shanks will die because it should be a given way to increase Luffy's power… Without some sacrifice, you'd rather think that he is pulling some Sasuke plot shit.
If he gets enraged, he'd fight with more will than that of other fights...

Another idea that came to me as I drifted off to slumber last night.
Might be interesting if we get an extended flashback or backstory during which point the events of the main story are covered in the title pages.
-
well nothing of a new idea from me. assuming been mentioned in these 19 pages.
but i figure its basically just a truthful troling by Oda. at the end of this we get like a page or something of him at Shakky's bar resting from his hormone injections and waiting for crew to come back. And it may show panel by panel of each strawhat coming back and so on with respective 2 weeks later, 1 month later, ect. like that for a chapter's worth and in end Luffy is 18 years old and total time like 3 months or something small.
thus not really time skip, since nothing really happens and basically all same age, yet luffy is now 18 and thus no longer 17 statement is true.
hasn't oda done thsi before where he said something that makes huge speculation yet in the ned was something minor but still true. It reminds me of the elves in Inheritance series (eragon). They speak in the ancient language thus whatever they say is true. But they are tricky with their words and are talking where they may come off as meaning something, but are meaning something else.
-
After the war is over Rayleigh took Luffy and trains him to be a "better fighter" and time goes by etc lol
-
Oki sure you guys want Timeskip… but what are the bad sides ?
The world is moving fast! If Whitebeard dies and we get maybe 4 months Timeskip the worse is over and everything is getting better. Also the other Supernova would be far ahead of him in the New World.
Luffy can rest on his way to New World, as we saw before with the poison curing... he is extremely fast to recover. Rest of the Strawhats are already on their way most likely. Don't forgot that it has already been few days since they landed on their Island.
The beating he is going to take from the hormones is not so great when ya think of Zoro and Thriller Bark.

…I like this idea. It's creative, and it would work.
In other news, maybe Luffy will be put down to heal for blank amount of time, and we'll follow each Straw Hat around as they make their way back to Luffy. Time away from Luffy isn't something Oda usually does, at least not for very long, so it will be an interesting change. -

The idea of of a timeskip is ghey….
1. It's not original, used already in numerous mangas already
2. Oda the type of guy that would make it that easy for his fans to guess that "oh crap, we're getting a timeskip. " remember the guy likes to shock the hell out of us
3. There's nothing wrong with a 17 year old becoming the PK, jeez, it's a shonen for god sakes, kids and teens are usually the ones to dominate them.
The most that I think will happen is that for the 1st time, Oda will possibly show a birthday and that would be Luffy's birthday and nothing more.

Luffy already has shown to release what could be called rage or wrath on enemies when he got really pissed at the opponent (as seen against Crocodile and Rucchi), he definitely doesn't need someone to die to do so. What you suggest strikes as some sort of DBZ-ish rage anyways which apparantly isn't how things work in the OP world.
And the point stands that it's part of their promise to fight with each other. I don't see Oda stepping down from this promise which was the catalyst for practically the entire adventure Luffy is having ever since he set sail.

1. It's not original, used already in numerous mangas already
That's like saying that fighting is "ghey" because it's not original and is used in numerous manga already. It's just a part of telling a story. 2001: A Space Odyssey uses a timeskip to make one of the most famous and striking moments in cinematic history, small timeskips appear in pretty much every story since they don't want to show 24 hours of every day or 7 days of every week. It's just about using them well; Inglourious Basterds has a three year timeskip that's so effective and naturally used it blends right in. There'd be no point in showing the three years in between, and what's more, even a quick montage of what happened in those years would detract from the film.
2. Oda the type of guy that would make it that easy for his fans to guess that "oh crap, we're getting a timeskip. " remember the guy likes to shock the hell out of us
You can't look at it so simply. He does like to get the readers with some great twists but he also likes foreshadowing something or just plain telegraphing that something is about to happen (like when Luffy is about to use Gear Third at the end of the Blueno fight, then when he uses it again off-camera to break the door down. Oda doesn't just suddenly have Luffy use a Gear Third attack on Lucci but rather he builds anticipation for this other Gear right from the end of the Blueno fight). Just using nothing but unannounced twists can end up being lame and predictable in its own right.
3. There's nothing wrong with a 17 year old becoming the PK, jeez, it's a shonen for god sakes, kids and teens are usually the ones to dominate them.
I know this seems to be a fair comment at first, but think about it. The main character in DBZ is a 20-something father of two (who ends up being way older than that) and his main rival is also a grown man and a father. In Naruto, as far as I know, there are significant characters way more powerful than Naruto who are all a lot older. Throughout the series we've seen many adults who are far more adept than he is. Same goes for Ichigo in Bleach; most of the captains are stronger than him and are all a lot older. And back to One Piece; while the balance may be addressed slightly if Luffy learns to control Haki properly, you have the Admirals, Garp and many other older characters who are significantly stronger than him.
The most that I think will happen is that for the 1st time, Oda will possibly show a birthday and that would be Luffy's birthday and nothing more.
Despite everything I've just said, I really wouldn't rule this out. I'm just trying to show that you shouldn't really write off a timeskip, either as a possibility or as a dramatically effective technique.
-
Oda saying this was probably just a distraction. He knows that people are going to discuss this to hell and back and then bam! he'll do an awesome twist.
-
TL;DR all the pages of responses to this thread so I don't know if this has already been posed but…..
These are my conclusions:
If Luffy is 17 in the current manga arc and the events of movie 10 are his last adventure as a 17 year old, then movie 10 takes place (at the very least) after the current one piece arc in the manga.
Therefore: the events of movie 10 take place after Luffy has recovered his crew (because they were all present at the start and end of the film).
So the timeskip won't be saving time so we don't have to show Luffy finding each crewmember.
(oh wow I feel like Battler in Umineko explaining his reasonings. Somebody use the red text on me uuuu~ or maybe this is in blue text)

The movie definitely takes place between Thriller Bark and Shabondy - at one point we clearly see Nami's log pose pointing down. (To Fishman island.)
16 charactersssss
-
Where are you quoting that from? Here? I'm just curious, because most of the movie takes place on floating islands, so if you take that into account, of course the Log Pose is pointing down. If the scene in question takes place prior to them flying, then I suppose that is something…
-
my bad. It come from this blog indeed: http://naye.livejournal.com/744233.html#cutid1
the quote is in"random details" -
oh gawd, so the new age begins regardless…
don flamingo might be the big bad in this one -
Why can't it take place after the war then? (in a possible timeskip or just between arcs) The log pose should still be pointing at fishman island until they actually go there.
-
still think that he'll just turn 18 without a timeskip. and the reason its so important is because his haki or will of D will awaken even more or something to that effect.
-
i think the movie falls between TB and the redline in the few days in between that are unaccounted for http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/490/09/
-
a time skip in OP say it aint so =/. Maybe he turns 18 in a couple of days.
-
Even if it is a timeskip, I doubt it will be like a fastforward several years, and everyone will look older and different.. probably more fastforward a few months, while Luffy recovers, maybe trains his awakening haki a bit, and he waits for the rest of the crew to make it back to the ship. So nothing drastic should change, except that the world has had some time to adapt to whatever the outcome of the war will be (the "new era").
-
I agree that I think IF there is a time-skip it will be anywhere from a few months to a year, or Luffy will just be unconcious/healing/out of action for a while, meaning Oda was just alluding to the break Luffy's character specifically will be seeing after the arc. I think a time-skip of 3-6 months could be good, make character power-ups more realistic, and add some new ties to the crew. Nami will have gotten pretty close to that old man, Zoro will have established a pretty strong connection with Perona, Robin with the revolutionaries, etc etc. I think I'm looking forward to changes in Usopp the most, although I'm curious as to what Oda will do for Sanji/Robin.
-
Just to make sure, didn't Oda say that Strong World is Luffy's last adventure as a 17-year-old, not Marineford? Since Movie 10 is ostensibly a canon story and yet doesn't really fit into what's happened so far (I mean, it'd have to happen as they travel from Thriller Bark to Sabaody, but I don't think that's where they are as Strong World begins) it makes sense that Strong World's events happen after Marineford and after the Straw Hats join up again. So, if that's the case, there needn't be a timeskip any time soon, it could simply be that Strong World's events happen so far in the future that Luffy is about to turn 18 at the time.
-

He said in a later statement it referred to both the movie and the manga.

I actually predicted this timeskip over a year ago. October 10th, 2008, to be precise:

I can see Sanji with a new sexier longer ( for the women ) hairstyle.

Oh my god I have never laughed so fucking hard at fanfic art, e1n you are amazing
I love your color spreads too, they are almost fully legit, and I collect them. Is there an archive of any I missed? -

1000% against a time skip unless the skip is like 6 months or something. It ruins the whole essence of One Piece which is slow but sure character development and adventure. I haven't read the whole thread…but I think the 27 year old Luffy Idea is never going to happen, and is pretty ridiculous. The more I think about it the more I would hate a time skip..it would be totally stupid IMO...and useless.
I predict that there is a time skip so Luffy doesn't have to go around and collect every single straw hat around the world, but I highly doubt that it is a large time skip, or that anyone looks incredibly different.
-
Of course we are not going to have a time skip…...... we will see in LIVE, the crew go to fishmen island like we saw them going to skypiea AND we will see the crew go to the new world like we saw them go to the Grand Line. There is no doubt to have about it. All this buzz is ridiculous.
-
@e1n:

Hahahahahaha!
Well the crew has to rejoin with each other, that might take some time. Two of them aren't even in the Grand Line anymore. Its just up until now the time skips have been a matter of days not longer.
-
I think it'll be a minor time skip. No more than a year.
