As Helmeppo had stated: What the heck is wrong with this family? I mean, youu have Garp who is a Marine, but his son became a revolutionary, which threaten WG itself. So Garp was trainign Luffy and Ace with numerous methods, then turn it over to his friend, onyl to have both of them become pirates.
I can't help but to think either Garp is a failure, or there IS somethingwrong with the family. Especially since Luffy is 5 years old; he could be changed by Garp easily.
It's probably just a generation gap issue.
It has always been Luffy's Dream, Ace probably felt like it while he traveled the seas and noone knows why Dragon turned into a revolutionary yet. But we'll probably get some major flashbacks once that time arrives, hopefully one involving his wife and Luffy's mother <3

Really though I'm not at all surprized that luffy turned out the way he did. Garp was only with him when he was a child. Shanks was proberly the closest thing he had to a father figure.
And dragon? I'm thinking he was a marine and after seeing how corrupt WG was turned on them. That would really make him even more dangerous since he would have all the knowledge of the WG.

I agree, not about the marine thing in particular, but there's definately more to Dragon than meets the eye. There has to be a reasoning behind that face tattoo and all too shandian look, and there has to be a reason why one man is both so powerful and dangerous and not the pirate king.. and not captured since he clearly meets up with marines like once a month to have coffee or something, just chill like that.. unless he has the strongest DF or something.. which would be cheap :sad:

Anyways, I agree with the generation gap explanation to all of this.
Garp: Old guard for whom the "age of pirates" is a recent and hopefully passing fad. He believes in some of the central dogmas of the WG (eg. balance of the three powers) because when he was young no one could have imagined them being questioned.
Dragon: Contemporary and potential aquaintance of Gol D Roger. If roger discovered something in raftel that put to question the dogmatic authoritarian directives of the world government, then after his death, others would have wanted to further his revolutionary goals. Sort of like a civil rights activist child of a patriotic WW2 veteran.
Luffy: Born and raised during the "Age of Pirates," Luffy probably collected pirate trading cards as a kid. He always wanted to be a pirate because they were the ones having adventures, which is what he greatly desired.
All three share their devotion to their ideals but were molded different ways by the times in which they were raised. Add to that the insane power that comes with being a D and the love of the Dream and you get a pretty disparate and massively influential family.

Well they have guys like Mezuni or Morgan on their service, they destroyed a whole country because they knew to much (Ohara) or even use the Megalomaniac Spandam to do what he did

There is absolutely no proof to back that up, while you see the Ohara incident as corrupt, another person may see it as the world government taking the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the public.
You seem to be a very speculative person, which is by no means bad. However, it's quite the statement to say that we KNOW anything.

One thing I've been wondering is why Garp left Luffy in Shanks' care if he wanted him to become a Marine? And how come Garp and Shanks are friends in the first place?

I don't think Garp returned to FV after Shanks left, or he would've known of Luffy wanting to be a pirate (he's not very good at keeping his mouth shut after all). And as for Shanks leaving Luffy at such a young age I'm guessing he decided Luffy (and Ace) had come to a point where he/they could take care of himself/themselves.
But still, so many questions are unanswered. Damn Oda, he's probably giggling away madly right now. :happy:

I think a lot of this should be obvious in the way a masterful mystery writer relays answers and the readers slap their foreheads thinking, "I thought it should have been like that!"
The whole picture with Luffy, Garp, and Shanks is extremely logical through hindsight. Also it shows Oda uses ideas from real life in his characters, and that we can use our experiences from growing up to fill up the blanks in the One Piece -verse. There's no reason to argue that these last few chapters (or any storyline-relevant "facts" presented in them) were faulty in any way, since it's more a question of Oda's style than anything else.
One stuff I like in One Piece is there's less manicheism than in other mangas. Take the Marine for ex: sure some of them are corrupted (the lower class though, like Morgan and Nezumi), some are also ruthless killing machines (Akainu, Helmet), but the majority is just professionals and more or less nice guys who're trying to do what they think is right. Aokiji, Saul, Garp, Comil, Smoker, Hina, Tashigi, Coby… Same for the Shichibukai; you have scum like Crocodile or DoFlamingo, and you've got Mihawk, who seems to be "neutral", not worse than Shanks or Zoro for that matter.
So to say the WG are the bad guys is over simplification.

Ubiq's theory: there are three types of Marine ideology, represented in full by Akainu, Aokiji, and Kizaru. Those who are simmilar to Aokiji follow Absolute Justice but also check their own personal moral code; examples are Smoker, Garp, and Saul. Those who follow Akainu are obsessed with structure and absolutely adhere to the law; case in point, Morgan.
As of right now, Ubiq hasn't offered any suggestion for Kizaru's followers, but I'll go out on a limb and say he/she is probably corrupt, and those who are corrupt (like Nezumi) follow Kizaru in using their position to further their own ends. I say this because if Aokiji and Akainu are the idealogical opposites, Kizaru must be the impartial.
Excellent theory, I must admit I couldn't see what kind of guy/woman Kizaru could be, but a corrupted, dishonest, yet extremely powerful Marine could make a great villain.

I think it's more likely Garp came home for a visit to find that a pirate had set up camp in his home town for three years (that's how long Shanks was there, right?). That'd be big news to tell someone returning home. Especially since his grandson had a bad case of hero-worship for the man.
Which leads to a question I was thinking about as I read through this thread. Do you think Shanks knew that this town was Garp's hometown (or, at the very least, the place where he had left his grandsons). If he did, Shanks had some real guts, making his base at the home of a Naval hero who could potentially show up any moment.

Unfortunately, your arguement starts out weakly with an unprepared sarcastic note. They came into power 800 years ago, there is no specific evidence that they immediately killed anyone who researched the lost age. It could have been greatly debated, and in the end decided that it was in the best interests of the world to forget those 100 years.
They throw people into jail with no trial. I don't understand what makes you think they right to trial should be granted, they do not live in the United States. You may believe that is wrong, but others may see it as throwing individuals who knowingly became pirates, helped pirates, or commited crimes illegal to the government. The fact that Tom built the ship the Pirate King conquered the Grand Line with is very important, considering that we can safely assume Tom knew Gol D. Roger was a pirate.
I should hope that no government agent would turn himself in after he commits an unjust crime in order to bring his own sense of justice into play. The men working under him most likely have connections to him, and would also be in trouble considering they helped out. And yes, it is quite possible that they were blind.
Corruption is obviously present, it's human nature. However, that is only within certain individuals within the government. One must not judge the whole when they only know a piece.
I fail to see why not telling the world who truly took down Crocodile is bad. The fact is that he was taken down, and yes it would look terrible if the world found out that another pirate stronger then the shichibukai entered the grand line, because it could create an imbalance in the 3 powers of the world. It is the correct political choice.
You see those marines as the ones who believe in true justice, I see that as your opinion. Those individuals have little in common with each other and we have yet to see enough of them to judge them in any way.

Yeah, I noticed the Goku parallels too. Sometimes I wish Luffy and the D's were not such a tribute to Goku and the saijins. Atleast they are only Monkeys and not Giant Monkeys… oh wait... gear 3... sigh...
But seriously, I really doubt that Shanks was the friend that Garp was referring to. Considering how Garp considers shanks a bad influence, why would he leave his grandson in his care? We'll probably meet who ever luffy's caretaker was sometime soon.

He, of course was one of the greatest military generals ever to grace the planet, before his assassination by Brutus and Cassius. His nephew, Augustus Caesar, was a revolutionary who brought in a republic and change the face of Rome. And his grandson, the third Emperor, was Caligula.
Caligula, as you might now, was insane. So insane, in fact, he made one of his horses his Magister Equitum, or Master of the Horse (personal advisor). In the end, he was killed by several of his own soldiers and replaced by Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (Better known as simply Tiberius).

As for this realative perspective, this proceding leaves a very stale taste in my mouth, as you in this way avoid to take an own stance to those facts while you easily look down on those who really dig in the mud of those facts and put their personel convictions behind their opinion.

In that they hardly can be controlled and represent a permanent element of chaos. From this perspective Luffys family is completely "normal" as there is little hope for a grandfather to "control" the lives of such grandchildren

On the matter of the original topic, I see it as children being influenced by something. I think Garp had little time for Dragon, as he was a marine reknowned for chasing down Roger multiple times, and Dragon as a result became heavily influenced by another invidividual. Luffy obviously did not know Dragon, as he did not know who he was. Bad parenting is what is wrong with this family.
Like I said before I pointed out that the W.G. is corrupt and it's proven at least to me (if others don't agree it's not my problem)

Judging by the way he said 'Shanks posioned you' and Luffy said he always wanted to become a pirate, the training must have been before Shanks' stay in Luffy's hometown.

Yosaku never said the three great powers were equal, just that collectively they worked toward promoting Grand Line's reputation as "the Pirate's Grave". In any case, Has it occurred to you that Ace and Luffy may actually be cousins? Notice we didn't see Sukazuki's face. Maybe Portgas D. Sukazuki? That would actually make sense, because it's strongly implied that Garp was the former Aka Inu. Notice his hat and his ship. If Sukazuki replaced Garp in the position, it would be more of a family transition and therefore make a lot more sense.
Luffy just may refer to his cousin as his brother because the two grew up and trained together.
