Good chapter over all.
I don't have much else to say about it.

I thought only dragonslayers couldn't use magic and edoras people couldn't use it freely only through the use of items.
Erza vs. Erza
I should've seen this coming ..
Is Gray holdin fire ?
they sure came out of nowhere…
let`s see how they could save themself before becoming lacryima.
I think everyone seriously needs to calm down and give the manga another chapter to explain how Gray and Erza were able to bust loose from the crystal (if at all) and are able to use their magic before writing the whole arc off as a retcon.
And I'm sorry…JELLAL?
It's bad enough that he sucks as a character. Now, he has a name that completely and utterly ruins him for life.
J-E-L-L-O!
@Yonkou:
apparently, now it seems everyone except for dragon Slayers can use magic in Edoras. now Lucy I can kind of understand, and also Erza, since their Magic uses objects, but when Gray used his I just went" great, Mashima retconned another part of his arc AGAIN." Here's hoping that Gildartz shows up.
Well, when you think about it, we've never actually seen someone from Earthland try to use magic except Dragonslayers up until this point. Because everyone else was sealed away in the Lachryma and the Edoras people are unable to use magic, we just assumed that Earthland people couldn't use magic freely in Edoras either. Perhaps that's not the case.

Maybe I wasn't clear. What bugged me was that Mashima led us to believe that mages from Earthland were subjected to the same limitations as the people of Edoras by having them fall out of the sky and then not be able to use magic. And not just by actions, he led us to believe it via dialog. Then Lucy comes along and she can use magic, but she "coincidentally" does so in the same chapter that they explain how magic works (via objects). What does Lucy use? Keys. So the trend (seemingly) continues. Moving on, we learn that in Edoras, the Exceed (Happy/Charle) are "special" in that they can store magic within their bodies, so it was just a matter of believing in themselves to use magic again. A bit corny, but ok, now they can fly and Lucy can use her keys. Well in this chapter Gray can use magic, so all that stuff above can be thrown out the window, and we are now supposed to believe that for some unexplained reason Dragon Slayers cannot use their specific type of magic, despite that same magic being the primary objective for Faust. Cause that makes sense. Anyway, it's not the "twists" that bug me, just the execution. I'd bet he actually planned this out, rather than retconning or changing things, it just seems a little sloppy without explanations.
I think it'll be explained soon. If you think about it, it was hinted at back when Lucy actually first used her summon magic. Sure, it uses keys (an item), but Lucy has to physically manifest the spirit using her magic ability. Remember back in the Loki mini-arc when she called out all her spirits at once and then almost fainted from doing so? That should've been a clue that the Earthland people could use magic in Edoras all along. As to why the Dragonslayers can't use theirs… well, that's simple. No dragons in Edoras. The dragons are still around in Earthland (evidenced when we saw Igneel speaking with Grandine after the ToP Arc), they've just gone somewhere away from humanity. In Edoras, Dragons seem to be non-existant. That said, considering the extraordinary amount of power a Dragonslayer possesses, just about anyone would be interested in harvesting that power.
I still hate the Gerards. I just hope one of them does something that's not completely boring.

I'm still pissed off with that whole joining a fighting, and peacing as soon as your mask comes off. Anti-climactic to a tee.

right now we are just having the mystery of the dragonslayers being unable to use magic. the whole lucy only able to use magic cause she uses items and stuff from different dimension and it items like in edoras was just a faulty and misguided assumption by us all. we shoudl have known better than that. since day one we have learned that she can only keep them out when she has enough magic power to. yet we ignored that.
and in the most recent chapter or last chapter we are told clearly that the earthland humans like the exceed can store magic in their body. so that is no longer a question anymore and everything fits, but again like we are all wondering the dragon slayers.
i'll be pissed if its passed off like happy/charlie thing that they are hesitant/confused/not sure or whatever and thus can't use their power. that is bullshit for a character like natsu. not once was he not pumped and ready adn sure and everything in this arc. so there must be some reason other than that. and then again strange that since they can't use their magic, what is their to extract?
@Fire:
I think it'll be explained soon.
I'm sure it will. I'm just saying the execution could have been much better if he made better use of the dialog and explanations. He clearly attempted to misguide us with the whole magic system, and was successful, but what bugs me is how he did it. It's like Gerard. It works, it makes sense, but instead of being "cool" or "interesting", it feels more like he is jerking our chain.
@Fire:

You don't see a problem with this? An explanation could clear things up, but as it stands now their magic is useless… so how would "extraordinary amount of power" be relevant at all? Well, I'll reserve judgment for the conclusion of the arc, but for now I think this could have been handled better. Not bashing the arc (yet), but the back and forth with magic is a bit underwhelming.
faulty and misguided assumption by us all
As I said above, I disagree. I'm pretty confident those were intentional red herrings from Mashima. Looking at the bigger picture, he structured it well enough so that it is confusing and misleading but works out in the end… the execution makes it look like an ass-pull though.

i'm not saying the author didn't try to trick us into that assumption, was just saying we should have known better and not fell for it based on our prior knowledge of how her magic works

Well, were this One Piece, I would agree. Unfortunately with Fairy Tail and certain other manga, you have to learn to accept that the author's do not limit themselves to rules and consistency.

what hasn't this author been consistent in? i don't recall any instances where he changed the rules of anything.

Ok, that makes some sense, but the only Prob is now it makes Edorians sound really, REALLY weak. since they are forced to channel magic through Objects while Earthlings can do it through spirit and will, that means that the fights are going to be severely one-sided….untill the Queen of Edoras shows up. here's just hoping the fights aren't as disappointing as the ones against OS.
Ep. 20 is a filler right? I DON'T remember reading about Happy's 'origin' in the manga, unless that was a Special chapter or some such.

Yeah it was a special chap, here: http://www.onemanga.com/Fairy_Tail/117.5/01/
Thanks, now I don't have to delete it =D
So far which eps. were filler? Ep. 19 comes to mind ATM.
what hasn't this author been consistent in? i don't recall any instances where he changed the rules of anything.
I'm curious too. Characters and plot elements might definitely not live up to their hype but overall Fairy Tail doesn't strike me as a series that has Retcon all written over it. In fact, one of the few plus points of the story is the consistency IMO.

19, and i guess most of episode 9. but it has some parts that are from a special as well, and it is just a adventure on way back from mission so if you deleting stuff i woudl keep it and only delete 19.
not sure why delete any though. 19 was a good episode, or at least would be if it didn't end not finished and then not finish it. i mean wtf on that move
speaking of the anime: where the hell's 25? or is it taking a break this week?
the new chapter is out:
! it seems the people of Edolas have had it the eksheed having infinite magic while they have zip. now they've decided to end their oppression by destroying Eksteria and taking their magic in something called code ETD. lucy, happy, charle get caught but now Grey and Erza have entered the ring and are ready to fight.
this is getting too tense for me, folks
Is it just me or Gildartz just got totally ignored after his appearance ?
Maybe the arc will focus around him once the main cast gets back to their world (seeing as Natsu wanted to go and find the black dragon after he heard about what it did).
In his little title page bio, it said that Gildartz didn't like Laxus's father, so I bet we'll get more on him when that plot thread comes into play.

Nirvana arc was the biggest example of this. We've discussed this to death already.

And ironically that very discussion where I proved it was with you.

Ep. 9 had part of a special? Thanks for clearing it up. Let's just say that I have a strict policy against fillers ^_^;
@SSM:

You didn't prove jack shit it was just your lack of common sense that made lose interest in further talkbacks with you. :getlost:

To be honest, nothing explicit is floating on the top of my head, I just recall having the thought about the series at one point or another. I figured someone else would help me out on that. Perhaps I am wrong– I don't think so, but perhaps-- but the thought in my head is that at a few points in the story it appeared as if the author did not think ahead far enough to plan out how he rolls out the story. Then, when certain developments took place, it either appeared as a retcon or was inconsistent with something from the past. As I lack specific evidence at the moment, feel free to ignore me on this. I'm sure someone will help me out on this though. Right guys? =D

The link above pretty much sums up the discussion with Mashima's inconsistencies during the Nirvana arc, including Racer's plothole, Gerard's convientient amnesia and flame ex machina.
Thought I'd ask here. Where can I find raw scans of Fairy Tail? Hopefully just a streaming site. Downloads are fine if you have a link. Everytime I find somewhere that saws raw.. it's not.
edit: looking for chapter 176 specifically
The RAW is out and their is one panel that should make most of you squeal with joy. I know I did!
! WOOT YEAH GAZILLE! :wub:
Nice Mashima.
Spoiler tags much?
And I think he was talking about Lucy's up-skirt.
Use spoiler tags people =x
For once the op to the anime has good animation. Even the episode itself was good to look at and next week looks like it'll be good as well.
There are translations on Mangahelpers, which explain why Gray, Erza, and Lucy can use magic in Edoras while Natsu, Wendy, and (initially) Happy and Charle couldn't.
! Mistgun gave them some kind of pill that simulates the Exceed's powers of limitless magic when used in Edoras. Presumably, he made it while in Earthland, as otherwise, the king wouldn't have to go to all of this trouble to gain limitless magic.
! As well, Dragon Slayers seem to be able to negate the effects of Anima (which is how Erza and Gray got free - Gazille broke them out, possibly from the piece that the king had broken off during the demonstration, seeing as he hasn't found the big crystal yet), which makes sense, seeing as they weren't affected by it in the first place.
! So, Edo-Erza's spear is called Ten Commandments, after Haru's sword in Rave. Even has the same abilities, like Explosion. I'm not sure if I should call 'nice' or 'lazy' on that one.
! Anyway, Gazille's back! Hell yeah!
Well, chapter's out. Anybody else think the pills are kind of half-ass deus-ex machina?
The pills and Dragon Slayer applications…well, okay, I'll roll for now. Some foreshadowing would've been nice though. Well, nice to see that Gajeel has joined the action at last.
As for the anime, I kinda wish that they would wait until they actually finish an arc before making a new opening that advertises the next one, but at least the song's alright and the animation's good. Funny that they showed Natsu, Gajeel, and Laxus in the same shot together. They'll probably change the opening again before they get anywhere near that reveal.
Idk. The mangaka really did a number with the development of Mistgun. Very little has been shared about him, so really, it could seem like a deus-ex machina, or something that should've happened anyways. From the beginning, Mistgun was always doing his own thing.
As from Ed-Erza's 10 commandments lance, well, idk how strong it can even be. In Rave, Haru needed the stones and shit to make his sword strong, but Edo-Erza's just pulling attacks out of her ass. That, and the 9th and 10th forms are crazy shit, I doubt Edo-Erza can even use them. So basically Erza's gonna roll Edo-Erza, unless something weird happens.
Gazille just made this chapter better.
I liked this chapter, but the pills… Well, let's see what'll happen before saying anything.
so pills huh?? ^^;
And again…. Mashima shattered my hope for Lucy's development <_<
At least, Erza vs Erza seems fierce..... They shared the similar magic though ^^
And of course.... Gajeel!! But it seems he hasn't got his cat just yet ^^ Hope he can break those cat shaped lacryma, so that he can choose to his heart content XD
I lol'd hard when I read ten commandments and when did wendy turn into her older self?
Weak.
Weak.
Weak.
Deus Ex Machina much?
what is a deus ex machina?
not a definition of that word, but what you feel in this chapter was one
