Whoa, that's really exciting to think about! I kinda have the feeling this will be the last row.
-
Wano takes a whole row on its own LMAO

I imagine the current row and the next row will be filled up at max by the end. I'll be surprised if Oda decides to go beyond that though.
-
I think we'll fill this row and the next for sure. We're already past halfway through volume 108. The God Valley / Kuma flashback could easily take us into 109. Then resolving the ongoing incident on Egghead should take at least 10 - 15 chapters. Meaning, Egghead will take us through 110 / 111. I give Elbaf 8 - 10 volumes (80 - 100 chapters), filling up the rest of this row.
Fullalead, Lodestar, God Valley(?), Laugh Tale / Void Century flashback, and a final battle in Marijoa could easily take anywhere from 15 - 30 volumes. Elbaf won't be the final island before Laugh Tale by simple virtue of the fact that geographically the Straw Hats are still in the first half of the New World, evidenced by the direction of the end of the line when leaving Wano. Elbaf is still north east from Egghead, which puts it pretty much in the exact middle of the New World.
So, some island hopping, battles against Shanks / Blackbeard / Buggy, locating the Last Road Poneglyph and charting Laughh Tale's location leading to the big revelaion of the Void Century, which I can't imagine will be a quick flashbck; In fact, I'd say the tale of JoyBoy's voyage could easily take longer than Oden's adventure.
And then the final battle itself, which will involve the opening of Wano's borders by Zunesha, Fishman Islan's destruction, and the entire world being turned upside down - likely involving nearly every character throughout the entire story in some capacity. The final battle alone could easily take 10 - 15 volumes. How could it take less? The battle on Dressrosa took 5.5 volumes. Onigashima alone took 7.5 volumes.... and those battles involved a small fraction of the number of characters Oda will want to give closure to in the ultimate culmination of his life's work.
The final battles in My Hero Academia, Naruto, and Bleach alone all stretched out longer than many people expect the rest of the entire series of One Piece to last. And as much as I appreciate those seies, there weren't nearly as many fleshed out storylines and character arcs as there are in One Piece which demand closure. Oda's battles are always bloated - and I just can't imagine him suddenly choosing to exercise restraint in the very final phase of a story he's been writing for approaching 2 decades.
I still think the series as a whole will wrap around 1400 - 1500, with anywhere between 300 - 400 chapters remaining. The rest of the current row completes Egghead and Elbaf. The next row gets us to Laugh Tale. And the final row is the final battle, inevitably longer and more involved than the battle on Onigashima.
-
I don't think that's possible; 13 more volumes in this row. We're already halfway through vol 108. Egghead takes us at the very least through 109, leaving max 11 more volumes in this row.
Compare to the above row; It leaves about the length of Wano Act 3 remaining to wrap up the entire series - Elbaf, the Void Century, Shanks & Blackbeard, a final battle involving nearly every character in the entire series, and a final resolution, including falling action & an epilogue... I just can't envision that happening.
-
Don't forget about the moon. We're going there.
-
I agree... I think Elbaf's giant tree might even be the means by which the Straw Hats reach space.

Info about Vol 107 SBS is starting to leak.
It seems Oda confirmed Caribou did not hear Luffy's dream back in Ch 1060.
-
Seems like we also get the name of Bonney's Devil Fruit.

Which is it? I'm assuming it's Toshi Toshi?
-
Scotch hasn't said. Just that it's revealed.
-
@King-Cannon Confirmed as Toshi Toshi no Mi.
-
Anything else? Don't really use twitter (or X) nowadays.
-
@King-Cannon nothing that interesting. Some stupid questions (“Does Imu have a limg face?”, “No”), confirmation that Beckman cut off Kid’s arm, Luffy started calling Bonney by her real name because he felt sorry for misnaming her when she was talking about her dad…
-
I think Luffy changing how he refers to Bonney is interesting because he's never done that before.
Also the new information about Sword is good. Oda clarified that Sword members haven't left the Navy. They've basically just pre-written their resignation so that if they end up in a situation that's awkward for the Marines, the Marines can legally disavow them. I do wonder what this means for Drake though, who is stated to be a member of Sword but publically has been stated to be ex-Navy already.
As for the Hibari stuff, it's very cute. It explains how Hibari fell for Koby.
-
@black-leg-jex I think Drake is formally off, but since he keeps his marine contacts SWORD gave him a in-corps-only rank. He’s Captain “of SWORD”, but not in the marines.
——
Edit: A new answer on Grus’ long cap is actually funny.

"So a lot of people were bothered by this"
Funny. I wonder what other things Oda has been sent fan mail about that people have been bothered by.
-
@black-leg-jex I think he did it with Yamato, he went from always calling them Yama-o to Yamato at the end of Wano

Which makes me wonder if Luffy felt anything different with Yamato like he did with Bonney, going from Boggy to Bonney.
-
Not a single dick joke… what is even the point?
-
Koby and his crew are on the move. I like this growth. Went from just him and Helmeppo to 2 more. Probably Tashigi, Smoker, and Drake at some point. I would read a Koby novel. He's very Deku like. Geek, hard working, run into the danger. Especially the Marine classroom aspect.
Oda doesn't know what he has. Just get 1 of the mangaka who had their work cancelled from the last 4 years to do it.
If Oda wants to be funny, he could add some of the Captains from the end of EL that were attacking the crew. Shu would be like "remember me Roronoa" and Zoro like who??? Yarisugi is another decent candidate. He too had his moments on cover stories.
-
@black-leg-jex He did this to Hancock he called her "Hanmock" but he started calling her by her correct name when they arrived in Impel Down to show how grateful he was to her.
-
Like Oda, I did not know the SWORD situation needed further clarification.
-
It's really interesting how Oda has such a great memory for random background details from hundreds of chapters ago, but doesn't realize when he hasn't named fruits before. This is at least the third time he responded in an SBS that he was surprised he hadn't named a fruit in the manga, I also remember it with Kid and Akainu.

Looks like Urouge has the only unnamed Paramecia left.

@electricmastro That poor dude has barely been in the story compared to everyone else.

Well seeing as how a minor character like Gloriosa has been revealed to have been part of Rocks Pirates, I think it's only a matter of time we get more time with Urouge, prob with sky lore.
-
I feel Urouge may have some new information on Nika and/or other gods.
-

Wouldn't be surprised if we went to another sky island so as to better understand Uranus. If Pluton is in the ground, and Poseidon is in the water, then Uranus might as well be in the sky.
-
The visual for pointy mouth Imu is an SBS all-timer, love Oda's reaction.
It can definitely feel redundant when the SBS is used for laying out things like the exact mechanics of SWORD in detail, but the SBS has to strike a balance between hidden details for the hardcore fans, clarifications and recaps for the casuals, and hard data for the wiki editors whose format doesn't allow for the kinds of extrapolation that fills in the gaps when you read normally.
-
Title page, recap and table of contents.
-
That Yonko page layout looks a tad weird with them being not aligned and the way Cross Guils sticks out like that. Makes it look like Mihawk is somehow affiliated with Teach if you don't look too close at it.
Edit: Also, where is Issho in the Marines section? I sort of forgot his current status and the last time we saw him but this makes it look like he is no longer an admiral and instead Sakazuki is in his spot?
-
@NameWaster I don't think Issho is even in the volume. They're only including the ones that are relevant, not giving a full organisational breakdown.
-
@Captain-M Had a quick look, they both appear during the attack on Mariejois in this volume and I feel like Aramaki is currently not any a lot more relevant than Issho. Of course it's not a big deal regardless.
-
Issho currently has a very odd status. His last appearance was when he was talking with Sakazuki post Levely, but we later discovered he actually kind of betrayed CDs by letting their slaves escape in the shambles of RA's attack to the point he and Aramaki had a fight.

Yeah, strange how that was just sort of an afterthought. You would think that would be big news... I guess it's just set up for Issho and Aramaki to fight for real down the line.

Not directly related to vol 107 exactly, but I saw Viz has posted images of the English vol 105 cover; They're still using the 'Wano' Arc title and colors despite vol 105 only containing 1056 & 1057; The majority of the volume is Egghead. I imagine it's because they don't want to use a single arc title for the volume cover, but up until now their policy has unflinchingly been to use whatever arc the volume end on for he cover. Case in point, volume 50 which contains 8 chapters of Thriller Bark and 2 chapters of Flying Fish riders is titled 'Sabaody' despite Sabaody itself not appearing until volume 51.
At the end of the day, I don't care personally whic arc titles they use. I think it was a mistake to ever try color coding the volumes by story arc in the first place. I also think it was a strange choice to switch to 'Wano' after 30 volumes of 'New World'; While it was clear Wano would b a long enough arc to justify its own arc designation, they were sort of putting themselves into a corner moving forward - because there's rarely a clear enough view of what's on the horizon to place everything into a single category.
I get the sense that they're distinguishing 105 as 'Wano' still in an attempt to kick the can down the road a bit, hoping that by the middle of next year we'll be past Egghead, maybe onto Elbaf, with an idea of the bigger arc / saga structure. But time will tell.
As I said, it doesn't bother me one way or the other. I don't really love the cover design for the US OP volumes - and Viz has completely moved away fom the large uniform numbering, instaed electing to match the style of the Japanese volumes. It's a shame they didn't make that transition after Alabasta for the sake of uniformity, but it is what it is. The numbering still often covers up artwork, loses he unique title color / design on each volume, and has even forced them to change the actual color of a few volums so as to not clash with the title color locked in place by the arc designation system (volume 50 is still the mos egregious, switching from black to purple to not clash with the black Sabaody title... depsite the fact that it would've complimented the orange Thriller Bark title quite well... and Sabaody isn't seen or mentioned in the volume... 12 years later and I'm still not over it I guess).
They'll have to decide on a new arc title / color for 106 though, scheduled for release in July 2024, so pobably by spring we should have an idea how 106 & 107 will look.
-
@StrawHatJedi The release is still a long way off. Marketing images still exist of an "Impel Down" titled volume 57, so these things can change after the initial reveal. And hopefully they do in this case, 105 is a terrible volume for the Wano banner.
I've said before that I think the arc titles aren't a bad idea, just hit and miss in execution. Incidentally, a couple of years ago I shared in the Viz thread my idea for how I'd fix them up: vols 32 and 50 becoming Skypiea and Thriller Bark respectively, to go off the arc with the most page time, Paramount War covering its whole saga for consistency with the rest of the pre-timeskip era, and adding Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Zou and Tottoland headers for the relevant volumes. If I did it over I'd consider folding Zou into Tottoland, but I still think it's not a bad effort.
Hopefully someone speaks up loud enough I don't have to update this thing with custom Egghead banners.

First image I've seen of the under-the-dust-jacket cover:
Pandaman is sneakily replacing the teddy on Hibari's backpack.
-
I must say that while Oda goes overload with tons of characters per cover I quite like that we get official colors for most of them before the anime release. If only he was that dedicated to thematic current saga-related colorspreads as well...
-
Crisp and clean digital release cover:
-
Really wish we could get a large format printed edition like the Full Color Dragaon Ball volumes... which Viz stopped releasing after Freeza. From what I understand Shueisha only licensed them one arc at a time. Were sales low or is it a 'protect the sales of the original pen & ink manga' thing? Personally, I would continue buying both.
-
@StrawHatJedi (you might have missed the digital colour thread but anyway...)
I've always figured that colour Dragon Ball flopped sales-wise because by the time it was dropping there were so many cheaper and easier ways to get the series. Single volumes, box sets, Viz Bigs and a regular omnibus set starting at the time it came out. Who would pay that much extra for single volumes in a set that was dropping arcs out of order and would take years to fully release if it had kept going?
My view is that a colour release is going to need to come out in a hefty omnibus format to make it economical, with regular releases to make it a reasonable way to catch up, and maybe find an extra selling point like a revised translation to get eyes on it. I would double dip on a full colour One Piece, but casual fans need a damn good reason to buy the same thing twice and new readers don't want to be behind for half a decade of singles releasing.
-
Yeah, sorry - my mistake. I meant to post this in the digital color thread. I think your analysis is quite accurate. I would also add that awareness of the digitally colored manga was pretty low at the time they tried releasing Dragon Ball. That's one advantage One Piece might have as the fanbase seems to be much more aware of the digitally colored edition existing than was the Dragon Ball community at the time they made their way here. I can't say thi with 100 percent certainty of course. I only know that I'm generally aware of new manga releases and was still surprised to find a fully colored edition of Dragon Ball at Barnes and Noble - and didn't really know that Shueisha was even making them in Japan. This is also perhaps a bit subjective, but I also felt like the cover designs didn't do the digital edition of Dragon Ball any favors. They're not exactly bad, but also don't really stand out either.
At the time, there were fewer deluxe editions of manga being printed in the US, so the large format full color Dragon Ball volumes were usually placed on the shelf with western comics - at least at all the Barnes & Nobles I visited.
I do agree with you that an omnibus type format would probably be more likely to succeed. The omnibus collections from Marvel for their supehero and Star Wars stuff seems to hover around 600+ pages. Viz's paper / ink seems closer to Dark Horse than Marvel, but I remember the older Star Wars omnibuses also containing several hundred chapters. I only had Knights of the Old Republic and I have them boxed up right now, so I can't say for certain.
But I've seen some omnibuses even larger - like the first Saga compendium is something like 1300 pages; the equivalent of about 6 volumes. That's probably on the extreme end though.
The Bererk deluxe volumes are probably about the page size I'd hope to see, and I think they're 3-in-1 volumes. About 600 pages sounds about right; Around 30 - 40 dollars soft cover, maybe 50 - 60 in hard cover I would guess.
For me, the biggest thing, whether in color or normal black & white, I really want a large format printed edition of One Piece. Oda loves to put details right in the center of the page - even dialogue bubbles. I think One Piece, perhaps more than any other series, would benefit from the large page size due to sheer readability. There are some pages that are very difficult to ead in the tankoban without creasing the cover or spine.
-
@StrawHatJedi Definitely agreed that awareness was an issue. Also acceptance of that kind of thing. Back when colour editions first started coming I remember seeing a lot of sentiments along the lines of it being disrespectful to the original art to edit it that way, these not helped by Shueisha's early colourings being pretty flat and basic. These days there's actual demand and people always asking when the next volume's coming. It's definitely a better market for it.
And yeah, would love to see any kind of oversize edition, whether black or white or in colour. There's so much detail that could be better appreciated with an extreme close-up.
3-in-1 is about the minimum you'd want for an omnibus, provided you can get a better release schedule than 1 every 3 months , but honestly I prefer it when omnibuses structure themselves around arcs instead of purely a set number of chapters/volumes. Like how the Japanese Log Collection or Jump Remix editions do it. But like, bigger than those ones. If Viz could pull off whatever wizardry makes those western comics compendium editions work, you could get most of One Piece's big overarching sagas in two or three volumes, with some of the big single arcs like Thriller Bark, Fishman Island and Punk Hazard getting their own standalone tomes. That's a pipe dream, but can you imagine?
My more realistic hope is something more in line with the Attack on Titan colossal editions. About 5 volumes worth of content, huge print. Hard covers like the Dark Horse deluxes would be cool, but those things are pricey, so I'd understand sticking with paperbacks.

The coloring on those sucked, and sales were probably low because everyone that wanted the manga already had it, and much cheaper, at that point.
