Hopefully we go back to the DF chronological order revelation, unless they'll find funny put Sugar's one as the magazine subject seems to be essentially focused on toys and merchandising.
-
@Deicide
-the history of all the past figures, clothings, variety shows and more
-Old nostalgic photos
-Piece of Dream
-Novel Odyssey -
@Sun-D Thanks.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like there's anything I'd be hyped about.

(Autotranslated)
New ONE PIECE Magazine, Issue 16, coming March 2, 2023
Author Eiichiro Oda will reveal the shape of the Boa Hancock Devil Fruit and Rob Lucci Devil Fruit
- The imaginary drawing that author Eiichiro Oda will draw at the request of the audience is (What if Yamato is the number one oiran in Wano?!)
-
So, a shorter Black Maria then.
-
Fruit visuals and number one Oiran, huh? Interesting.
-
Some One Piece Magazine Vol. 16 pictures!!
- “Piece of Dream”: “What if Yamato is the number one Oiran of Wanokuni?”.
- Boa Hancock's “Mero Mero no Mi” and Rob Lucci's “Neko Neko no Mi model Leopard”.
-
Interesting that lately the Magazine has covered fruits that are relevant to current stories.
And now we got Lucci's and Hancock's.
Lucci's in the current story.
Will Hancock...? -
Very nice art!
-
Does the text for the Love Love Fruit here say anything about the revised activation conditions that have sparked debates in the current arc? Or are we still saying that "impure thoughts" are the trigger for a petrification?

Not sure why people think that since even a kid was shown enamored with Hancock at Amazon Lily. York also looked at the Seraphim in an adored admiration. Of course people look at her cute like how people look at puppies and kitties as cute.
-
@electricmastro Hancock says specifically that impure/lustful thoughts are what triggers the petrification. And if you look at who's actually been hit by that attack (she never turned whichever Amazon Lily kid you mean to stone did she?) that seems to hold. We've also yet to see anything in SBS or databooks to contradict it.
I would say York had the first unambiguously innocent interaction that led to petrification. I talked about it in the discussion thread for that chapter, how it's now clear that the rules have changed from what we were originally told.
Now what I want to see is how Oda defines the fruit's new activation rules and limits.
-
God damn it, Yamato looks even better than Black Maria as an oiran.
And another one without the Soul Soul Fruit. Now the long wait for the next magazine.

Well reality can differ from what people say after all. lol
-
@electricmastro I'm not arguing that point, we've now shown it's the case. Like I said, York closed it for me.
I just want to see where the author puts the limits of the new definition, since the old one stood for so long. I think that's worth seeing even if you've been headcanoning that it could be any strong positive emotion or whatever the whole time.
-
I guess it is indeed extended to any type of attraction/affection/idolatry.
Hancock clearly wanted to underline men's lascivious intents back then, due to her and her tribe's misandry.
And I honestly think we went way too far with the Pacifista stone kicks back at Marineford to find this very one out of definition.
-
Nami 3 Sword Style figures announced in One Piece Magazine Vol. 16!!
-
I always took Hancock's explanations of the fruit as her being boastiful and keeping the fine details secret so it's hard for anyone to find the power's limitations and weaknesses.
There's clearly things that need to be addressed, since the power can petrify even things that can't feel emotions like cannonballs or Pacifista.
I also feel there must be a way to undo the petrification, and probably it's a very simple way, but the story has kept it from us just like Hancock keeps the secret to herself. After all, imagine how that moment with Blackbeard would have gone for her if Blackbeard found out petrification can be undone by something other than the user.
These are some theories I have on how the Mero Mero works:
-
Basic level: Emotion-based petrification (Mero Mero Mellow/Love Love Beam). The user can petrify those who feel fascination to her. This fascination does not need to be lustful. The only defense against it is to calm one's own emotions or be distracted from them, but strong haki users can make themselves temporarily immune as well by concentrating their will.
-
Intermediary level: Petrifying constructs (Slave Arrow, Pistol Kiss). The user can manipulate constructs of energy harnessed from emotions. As such, she can use the emotions of some to affect others by attacking with such constructs. The constructs must physically harm the target, as such this use of the power can be dodged, blocked or resisted via armament haki. On the other hand, the power user can use her own haki to strengthen her constructs.
-
High level: Petrifying touch (Perfume femur and other physical attacks). When faced with opponents capable of evading the other applications of the mero mero, the user can imbue her own body with emotional power so her physical strikes cause localized petrification. Much like with the constructs, thought, this can be dodged or resisted with armament haki. In essence, this ability makes any wounds caused by the user more serious/harder to heal, but the user must be able to harm the target in the first place.
If I were to guess what can undo the petrification, I'd say bathing in ice-cold water. What better way to dispell lustful emotions/enrapture by beauty? But who know, the way to undo petrification could be based on something from japanese culture.

Is it just me or the leopard fruit looks like bread?
More specifically the Guilmon Bread:
-
Oh cherries! I kept wondering for years how something like grapes or cherries would be applied to the awakening of a Devil Fruit. Very cool!
-
Lucci gets a leopard-head shape fruit.
Meanwhile, Kaku ate a boring-ass banana.
-
Not an avid figure collector, but I need 3 sword nami to be availabel outside of japan when it releases.

Prob really depends whether people expect devil fruits to actually be shaped like fruits. lol
-
@King-Cannon In-story fruits are meant to be hard to identify.
Magazine fruits are just made to be flashy and thematic.
-
I always figured the banana appearance was to bait and switch readers into thinking he'd be a monkey as a gag.
Not that that helps find an in-universe explanation at all, but it'd be far from the only thing that is the way it is just because Oda thought it'd be funny.
-
Bananas are long fruits, Giraffes are long animals. I think it fits

2013 was prob when Oda started being more keen on the fruit's shape being indicative of its power, because he drew Ace's fruit as a fiery shape. It was pretty all game on fruits looking like fruit before then.

This. Franky also used to call him “Mountain Monkey” when he worked at Galley-La. So it was like Oda wanted the giraffe reveal to be a gag in itself.

Yamato illustration in HQ and creation!!

@sandman Can you translate Oda's comment about this drawing? I'll be very thankfull

Alternatively, there's Google Image Translate, which seems like it reads decent enough here.

I might be an outlier, but this is the first magazine I'm super excited for. I don't collect, but I've been reading and writing about One Piece merch for a couple years now.
Comprehensive lists of WCFs and Mugi Mugi Otedama, among tons of other stuff, are so valuable when other online databases aren't great. Bandai and One Piece.com try, but this has the potential to be much better.
-
One Piece Magazine Vol. 17 will be on sale in September 2023!!
-
C’mon, Oda, the only thing I’m asking from these magazines is the Soul Soul Fruit
-
Seems to be part of the merch directed to tie in live-action watches to the manga, right?

"Vol.17 will be released on Monday, September 4th! !
The special feature is "ONE PIECE catching up from 1".
It is a perfect content for reviewing and introductory, which summarizes the stories and terms for 106 volumes.
The cover drawn by Eiichiro Oda is a landmark ️"Landmark cover? Hmm
The 'landmark cover' is a bit of literal translation that doesn't cover what it really means.
The whole sentence is basically saying 'look for the cover with Oda's drawing at your local bookstore!'
-
@1234entak Oh, right. Thanks for clarifying!
-
Enel's Goro Goro no Mi and Perona's Horo Horo no Mi fruits!!
-
Horo Horo no Mi is so cute. I love it.
Also, "Enel is supposed to have yellow lightning!" has never been so blatant.

Makes me wonder how Enel went about eating a prickly fruit like that.
-
@electricmastro You don't need to swallow it whole. Just eating a bit is enough. You can cut it or peel its skin and then bite it once.
-
Full Eiichiro Oda's illustration for One Piece Magazine Vol. 17 cover!! No “Piece of Dream” illustration in this issue :(
