@Nex:
I'm sorry, but I think you meant to say James Gunn.
Besides laughs, Winter Soldier was superior in every way. Best action in a superhero movie ever, great story, brilliant twist and villains who actually got shit done (and weren't completely forgettable).
EDIT: Guardians also had a better soundtrack.
-
Winter soldier is the better movie, Russo brothers the better directors. And guardians, while being enjoyable, is way overhyped by everybody.
-
put another one down for Guardians. I thought Winter Soldier was Predictable and just another canon marvel movie while Guardians managed to distinguish itself by not only being its own movie but also being pretty good and watchable. I don't think i would ever watch Winter Soldier again. Maybe it was the trailers that told the whole story, dunno.
-
I'm sure they'll do fine, and I get Joss is burned out after basically spending five years of his life on these already with little time for personal projects without wanting to commit another five… but I do hope we get some Whedon guidance in there.
Whedon won't direct but I'm sure he'll be in the background somewhere. He's so tied up in this he can't do nothing.
-
GoG had that 80s whacky film vibe all over it, like Ice Pirates and Princess Bride.
It probably helps with all the nostalgic tunes and colorful and outlandish hairstyles, and of course, Howard cameo. But it kinda stops there. It doesn't do much more than being a nostalgia train.
Winter Soldier, while doing nothing unique or grounds breaking, was exceptionally well crafted and directed action Super Hero movie.
I feel it's the best film since the first Iron Man in the MCU, not counting Avengers. -
I thought Guardians, in addition to the Nostalgia based factors, did the action set pieces phenomenally well, and had real great character moments for everyone. The climax to the film I thought was superb, both with the emotional payoff of Peter seeing his mother, and in the fact that they won through the power of friendship. On top of that, it was what I think is the most important thing for a superhero film to be: fun. Winter Soldier was amazing, but I left the theater never really wanting to sit through it again. Guardians I left wanting to immediately see again, and that's the difference for me.

I'm sorry, I had to.

Both movies are really pretty simple on terms of history. Both are A->B and both have cliched characters that pop up everywhere in today's media. The thing with Guardians is that they know to sit comfortably and expand upon their own territories and color and expand the history within its own limitations. No, we don't get a twist and Quill is always going to follow the route of its character but its upon those limitations that Guardians can safely assure quality and a good time.
Winter on the other hand has that twist…that is present in almost all places today. The minute they appear on screen "that guy? Bad" "That guy? old enemy that will redeem" and so on (merely examples, don't fret on me on these ones). Chekhov is good but it's been around for a ton of time now. The gun doesn't surpise anymore as nor does Keyzer Soze (I mean, as an example he's not the origin of it).
Both are good and represent the two different directions that Marvel can and will take with their movies but Guardians is the one that feels fresh for me.
Also, the first Iron Man is really, really good. I should watch it again. I love the pizza scene with Tony and Obadiah.
-
I enjoyed Winter Solider, and it did have some good twists. But obviously the entire Winter Soldier and who he is thing has been a mainstay of the comic for quite a while now, so the movie playing that as any sort of surprise twist and drama at all did nothing for me.
Movie was well done and had some good action set pieces and was very good. But it wasn't imminently rewatchable and fun.
(Also, Guardians is even funnier now that memes have made it out to be the Avengers D&D game, with Steve playing Rocket just to mess with DM Tony who is trying to play it all straight.)
-
We should decide this with a dance-off.

Well yeah the 1% like us who read the comics knew who the Winter Soldier was, but for the other 99% of the mainstream audience I would bet it did come as a surprise.
-
Thats the other thing. The comics had decades and hundreds of comics to build up to that point. Flashbacks to Cap and Bucky, random adventures they had, and the long period of real time decades where Bucky was dead, so that his return meant something and was a legitimate shock, when he used to be one of the only characters guaranteed to stay dead, along with Uncle Ben.
In the movies he was gone for about 10 seconds and his "death" never really sank in or had any real oomph to it. It just lacks something.
Same way the Spiderman movies rushed to killing Gwen Stacey, and that just doesn't work as well when Spidey and Goblin don't have a long term rivalry and peter and Gwen haven't been dating/serious for a long time. You can make those beats work and register if you do them right, but rushing to them is still kind of awkward.
Obviously I'm not saying these movies should have waited 20 years in real time before getting to these arcs, but… a middle film would have been nice. Just a bit more time for things to set in.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/03/24/rumor-has-it-that-marvels-cast-captain-marvel
It is a confirmed thing yet but
! Apparently Cap Marvel has been cast and apparently she will appear in Age of Ultron (according to Latino-review)
-
Dude, spoiler that now. It's a major plot point.
-
@TLC:

huh? what is? I only have the movie title and Cap Marvel in the post
-
Avengers 2: Age of Clowncar
But seriously, hype and curiosity acquired -
That character appearing in that movie is a major plot point that not everyone knows. Have some courtesy and spoiler it for those that want to be surprised.

If you actually look at the article and my post you would see it isn't even a confirmed thing yet.
-
So is that like a…spoiler for comic readers or something? It doesn't seem remarkably spoilerish to me.
-

Basically TLC thinks it will be a spoiler to Cap Marvel's surprise appearance (provided it will actually happen) I think.
-
So…it would be along the lines of someone reporting that they casted the voice of Howard the Duck for Guardians of the Galaxy?
-
So…it would be along the lines of someone reporting that they casted the voice of Howard the Duck for Guardians of the Galaxy?
yeah that would be accurate
-
You know, the more I think about it the happier I am the new Spider-Man movies didn't do as well as the last ones because I'm sure that had a lot to do with Spider-Man being allowed to join the Marvel Universe.
-
@TLC:

It's a tease, not a major plot point.
Likely she'll appear as Carol Danvers the soldier and not Captain Marvel.
-
I gotta agree with TLC, Its still a possibly large surprise now spoiled. Especially since its for a more seemingly unrelated "cosmic" character whos not due her own movie for 3 years? That'd be a huge surprise to me.
So yes, I'd treat this as a spoiler. Its like a twitter announcement of "Just finished up Black Bolts scene for the Ant Man movie :-)"
We know the things are coming and will be interconnected and referenced, but wheres the fun if we know which cameos to expect going in? It just becomes a matter of waiting for Captain marvel to show up, not being surprised when she does.
Like, I appreciated not knowing the Bruce Banner cameo in Iron Man 3, or the Stephen Strange nod in Cap II beforehand. The moments wouldn't be as fun had I expected them.
-
I would have appreciated not knowing, too…
-
I dunno about you guys but not knowing THAT character is coming in (and I realize at this point, the cat is out of the bag in this thread on who it is but fuck it) is a major fucking deal unlike Howard the Duck and NOT knowing that character is going to be in that movie opposed to the other movie YEARS down the line would have been a very nice surprise. I dunno, when I read the spoiler on IGN, I was pissed and just wanted to help other people from having it be ruined for them.
-
Jesus christ calm down TLC it's going to be a goddamn cameo.
-
Given how foaming at the mouth angry some people where when that character's movie was delayed for a year, I would think seeing this would be good news
-
"BREAKING NEWS: Chris Evans reveals appearance in Thor: The Dark World. "Keep your eyes peeled for me in Asgard!" The star says, though he teases that it might not be what fans expect"
No wait, bad example, that just spoils a throwaway joke appearance of an already established character. Since this involves the first ever appearance of a new Big Name character who has not been indicated to play any role in Age of ultrons narrative whatsoever, you might consider it a slightly different matter, a slightly bigger surprise. A better example might be:
"BREAKING NEWS! Latinoreview reveals extra scenes being shot with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch for Cap II! Make sure to stay after the credits and act surprised when you see them, because it really would be quite surprising to see them given the siblings have never been suggested to have any involvment with the movie!"
(By the way Cyan, its neat how you single out TLC and neglect to mention me or Nami sharing his viewpoint; that way TLC appears to be the sole supporter of an unreasonable opinion, which can be more easily dismissed as invalid. Clever.)
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Given how foaming at the mouth angry some people where when that character's movie was delayed for a year, I would think seeing this would be good news
When the MCU was initially revealed, there was probably a lot of people anxious to see Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet on the big screen. That doesn't mean having Thanos appearance in Avengers spoiled would've been preferable to seeing the surprise reveal for yourself, firsthand.
Honestly, theres a bit of info-overload going on with these superhero movies; If we end up knowing the timing of every single character/villain/plot-point introduction or Teamup/Team Breakup/funny joke cameo in advance, a lot of the charm that made the MCU so fun in the first place will dissipate. Like, If I know Benedict Cumberbatch has been seen on set for Ant Man, all I have to look forward to is seeing how exactly the Dr. Strange cameo will be handled, instead of being gleefully surprised that there was a Dr. Strange cameo to begin with.
-
I agree with Daz and TLCs opinions. I just didn't spoiler it because it was more or less a rumor so I didn't see the need to spoiler what we aren't sure is even going to be in.
-
Well if you don't like being spoiled 'bout movies you should definitely avoid internet forums 'bout movies. This thread has been used to discuss speculations and rumors since the beginning. If a new film is released the majority of people here almost always use spoiler tags on plot, jokes, cameos and other surprise stuff.
-

Shut up Outerspec! No one gives a damn about Spider-Man right now and that shit is old news! We want to discuss what is and what isn't spoiler defeating the whole purpose of the spoiler as we're all discussing it so maybe it doesn't happen again…or does depending on who's right.
Fuck it.

I'm just posting to say Outerspec made one of the funniest posts of the year.
-
-
That must be one of the greatest costume adaptations ever.
-
And Ryan Reynolds is inside of it?
I…
I may need to go to the bathroom for like a uh...diarrhea. Yes. that.
Don't wait for me.
-
Do the eyes moves?
-
Yessssssssss.
That photo alone has me more excited than the entirety of Fox's superhero lineup ever managed -
Do the eyes moves?
It does seem one eye is larger than the other so there can be some emotion shown through facial/mask movements.
-
Do the eyes moves?
It seems so but I think it may be a digitally enhanced type thing probably
-
Here's an article that includes Ryan Reynold's tweets:
http://io9.com/first-pic-of-ryan-reynolds-as-deadpool-is-damn-sexy-1694062128SO excited. So far every step they're taking is getting the fans hyped just right. The costume is perfect. Revealed in a very Deadpool-style. Now let's hope this keeps going.

Bwahaha. That pose is actually an "homage" to an infamous naked Burt Reynolds photo from back in the day. Which I can't post here but if you google "Deadpool" and "Burt Reynolds" you can find it.
-
I feel slow. I knew it was imitating the Burt Reynolds pose but I forgot the actor that's playing Deadpool is Ryan "Reynolds".
Ha.
