Time was the main problem in this arc, characters got underdeveloped due to the massive amount of "real world time" it was gonna take Oda to develop them.
It felt like Oda was playing with a hourglass and made it at the last drop.

After seeing 20 panels of her crying I wouldn't mind seeing her face get a fearless I'm gonna finish this/ no need to be afraid ever again look on it, also wouldn't mind her character being redeemed a bit. Law doesn't need to land the final blow he allready did enough and should be K.O.'d right now but somehow he is still awake, and I say that as a huge Law fan.

Very true. Even the gladiators got some good, if quick characterization. If I had a complaint on the character front it would be that just SO many were introduced in such rapid succession. I can't speak for anyone but myself but to many characters too fast and I don't bother to keep track of them. I've had that issue with a couple of other manga, most recently World Trigger.

I think Dressrosa was a successful arc because it was basically a dry run for the final war arc. It's the longest arc to date, introduces and incorporates a much wider cast of allies than we might normally see, and better balances plot and action than the previous trial arc, Marineford. It also reflected many of the same themes of the series as a whole, and various features can be seen as potential metaphors for aspects of the World Government. In this case I think it's most important that Oda get feedback from both his editors and his audience on what went well and what didn't. For instance, while many of the characters were phenomenonal, many of us still wanted to see more of the Doflamingo Family but felt Rebecca's character arc was more of a steady decline. Law's flashback was fantastic, but too many emotional plotlines were attempted for them all to strike true. As long as Oda hears about and learns from the shortcomings of this arc, I have no major problem with Dressrosa's rough patches.
I hope he also learns how much we miss Sanji and stops picking on him.

Yeah, I actually enjoyed this chapter. Re-reading it and paying attention to Kyros actually made me emotional. Especially all the being a toy and not being able to shed tears or express emotion for 10 long years.
To us, we were in the area not far from 3 years waiting weekly chapters, when it's really only maybe a few hours in the actual story line. Most people wouldn't understand the pain of withstanding no love, or not being remembered for a full 10 years and being slave to a King that had planned his way to the throne. Seeing all the Evil but not be able to talk about it, and having people living now knowing the true Evil. Everyone had a pain that they weren't able to express, there was something bothering them, but they didn't know what.
Doflamingo being found out to be the root cause of this unknown feeling and also being defeated really gave them a sense of relief, which really was shown and expressed in this chapter by the Dressrosians. It was also shown by the Gladiators who almost had the same fate as the rest of the current suffering toys. They were all at deaths door. Their victory and relief was also shown in the emotion of this chapter.
This arc was very well written to me. There are a lot of unanswered questions which is what make people believe it's all stupidity, biggest example being Fujitora. Not to mention he actually he stated that no matter what evil had been brought out, he would be a mere blind man passing by. He has a reason, time will tell.
People keep viewing this as a waste of time in our lives waiting weekly and not getting content they would rather see, when actually this is a set of events that have taken in Dressrosa and have flowed right through in the story line. It's a day where things have happened.
At least Oda's done introducing and showing off Luffy's future allies. They'll be needed against the yonko forces. Lets face it, the SH's doesn't have the manpower to go up against a yonko. I'm just waiting for the classic "SH's escaping the marines" and "victory party", before the arc ends.

When she first spoke with Luffy she said she was going to win the Mera Mera so that she can kill Doffy and save her people (she is the future ruler of that island and it's her home so she wants to save it more than most characters I don't see Riku doing shit) she also has done nothing worth mentioning to help the fight against Doffy besides help deliver a key so how would it be the worst possible ending it wouldn't be that out of place, you act like I said the funk brothers should finish him off. I definitely don't mind your opinion but try not to over exaggerate/ shut down someone's crackpot theory without giving a shred of reason as to why it's SO unbelievable.
It's not that idea is unbelievable, it's just that it would be a shoehorned plot reason to make her of all people kill Doflamingo. Also having the first villain being killed one of by arguably the worst character of the whole series would probably ruin the entire arc for me, more so than plotcage, whatever that was with Ussop and useless Fujitora put together.
There's nothing interesting about that character and many other named characters would be a better pick. Starting first and foremost with the one in your profile picture.

Here's my thoughts on the arc. I'm really tempted to give it a C+ just for how terrible the fights were and how drawn out the latter half was. The Donquiqote Family, in my personal opinion, were terrible villains. People keep saying how extremely well developed they were, but I don't see it for most of them. A lot of them are just one-note gag characters. Which isn't bad, but they aren't good fighters either. Seriously, these guys are supposed to be the crew of a Shichibukai? The only members that didn't suck were Doflamingo, Vergo, Pica (yes I know he was constantly running away, but you can't deny that being a living mountain and changing the landscape of an island is impressive), Senor Pink (best member by far), Gladius (dude had the best fight out of all of them), and Baby 5 (don't know, I just like her). That and Fujitora pretty much doing nothing this entire arc is mind boggling (yes I know there's most likely a reason, but when the Birdcage is about to kill everyone and Doflamingo is so injured that you could easily kill him, I doubt the Government is gonna be that pissed). But overall, the flashback, Sabo, a pretty good first half, Gear 4, and some enjoyable new characters (Bartolomeo, Chinjao, Cavendish, and some others) I think balances it out to a B-. Not bad, but definitely the weakest big arc in One Piece.

Machvise's whole fighting style is just a rehash of the worst Baroque Works agent, and Dellinger is incredibly mediocre. Honestly, a lot of them just seemed like people with no combat ability at all, and just powerful Devil Fruits.

What's your standard for judging the Donquixote Family? Sure they're not the most effective villain group, but they have the best designs in ages and on average they're more complex than most others. Given that the fights were only shown in short bursts, they did quite well with the screen time they were given. The only one who was seriously underdeveloped was Machvise. Everyone else was intriguing at some point. On the other hand, we had two deliberately sympathetic characters and several others who were just plain enjoyable to watch.
I do agree with your overall verdict though. B to B- and certainly not the best big arc.

Um, Dellinger was probably the most successful member of the family besides Doflamingo himself. He took out Ideo, Blue Gilly and Sleiman, and until he was taken out by Hakuba, he was basically completely unscathed. That seems a little bit better than mediocre.
Not to mention Dellinger low diffed Bellamy (who is himself worth 195 million). Cavendish had to resort to Hakuba just to beat him. And Cavendish is worth 280 million! These numbers are serious threats in Paradise. >_>

Doflamingo is a great villain. Loved his development, loved his fighting style, loved his devil fruit awakening, he's amazing. It's just a shame that his final fight was so mediocre that it isn't even worth talking about. If you're gonna make Luffy just beat down Doflamingo, go all out and make it an incredible beat down(which it was for the first chapter) like Yusuke vs. Sensui. But no, we gotta see King Riku make a speech about not giving up for a whole chapter, ONLY TO HAVE GATZ DO THE SAME GOD DAMNED SPEECH LATER ON ALSO FOR A WHOLE GOD DAMNED CHAPTER!
And as for the Donquixote Family, apparently being a whole bunch of one-note gag characters constitutes being developed? The group as a whole not hating each other is the only thing they have different from other One Piece villains. That, and their fights sucked for the most part. When I was reading through the arc, I thought Jora had the worst "fight", but who would've thought she'd be out sucked by one of the Elite Executives. I'm of coarse talking about Trebol. The dude gets cut once, blows himself up trying to take out Law and of coarse fails. The only way his defeat could've been any more pathetic is if his explosion was accompanied with a fart sound effect (I honestly hope it is in the anime).

His crew are aged and out of shape too, they were probably a bigger force to be reckoned with when younger. Comparatively speaking Don's family are stronger than every other shichibukai's crew we've seen so far. They just happen to be fighting opponents out of their league.

Chinjao, Bartolomeo, Cavendish, and Sai (I like him for some reason) were really the only impressive ones there. Okay I'll give some props to Hajrudin even though Luffy one-shotted him (punching 10,000 tons that far into the air is pretty impressive). Seriously, I remember nothing about Machvise other than how he got taken out.

Err, no, not quite. Dagama and Blue Gilly were featured quite prominently in the Colosseum's B Block, and then again after the bird cage came up. Suleiman and Ideo were featured less prominently in the colosseum, but had ample screen time once the bird cage came up. And Suleiman was also involved in that "Sea Battle of Dias" event that we're very likely to learn about some point later in the New World.

It showcases each of the "main allies" of the arc, which signifies that they will all be important in one way or another in the future conflicts (some more minor that others though). And not just in the final arc either, but also in the fight against Kaido/Big Mom (still betting on these two being dealt with at around the same time somehow). That's really the only reason for Oda to have introduced all of these characters now in the story. If they were being saved for the very end of the story, they could have been introduced gradually as the New World progressed, just like with the multitudes of Paradise allies (although, it would've been nice to go to all of these islands as short adventures to befriend these people, but alas, there just isn't time).
The gladiators you're thinking about that could be "background characters" (or not appear at all) are the majority of the D Block cast, along with a few of the fighters that participated in C Block (Jean Ango, the Funk Brothers).

For me overall I'd give Dressrosa a 7.5/10. While it certainly had its cons it did have its fair share of pros.
Pros:
-The Donquixote family as a whole were great villains. I loved Doffy, Diamante, Pika, Senior Pink, Gladius, Dellinger, Baby 5, Lao G and Sugar mainly, they were one of the best pirate crews Oda has created imo, each having their own quicks and personalities.
-The Tontatta’s. Yes alot of people think they were annoying and pointless but I just loved then (So cute, funny and strong too, though extremely naive. Leo, Kabu and Wicca are awesome.
-The gladiator’s and the roles they played in the arc. Also serving to become allies to Luffy in the future.
Bartolomeo, Cavendish, Sai, Ideo, Chinjou, Harudin, Blue Gilly, Elizabello etc.
-The Straw hats splitting up into separate divisions. I personally loved how Oda decided to split the Strawhats up for different objectives for I don’t believe he’s ever done that before and it serves to give more secondary characters development (I.e the gladiators). Still wish we would see them again though it’s been 60 chapters argh!)
-Sabo returns. Big moment of the arc and it even brought back Koala from the Fishman Island saga who I like too. Great to see more involvement with the revs.
-Big Mom appears. This was a great curveball and I can’t wait to see what happened with the Twirly brow pirates.
-Kyros was a great character and I just loved his involvement in the arc. Him supposably chopping off Doffy’s head was grand! And now this chapter him able to fully release his emotions where he never could as a toy was beautiful. Granted not a fan of his telling Rebecca not to fight but I’ll live with it because Oda’s not the best when it comes to giving us girls a strong female role model. Except Robin she is just amazing!
-The Doffy vs Law and Luffy fight was great. Not the best but still was entertaining and pushed both Law and Luffy to their limits which I was glad to see at last. And Law getting his arm cut off was awesome! Plus G4 and Awakening was just crazy hehe.
-The Corazon flashback was beautiful and really let free my emotions. R.I.P Cora x
-The fighting in the colosseum was very enjoyable.
-The 3 stooges (aka fishy, cato and kroakemon) were hilarious!
-Doffy actually cared for and respected his crew which was a great change.
-Bellamy's redemption and character development was great.
-Usopp Haki awaken enough said.
-The Dressrosa takeover Flashback was great and I loved seeing Doffy truly screwing over Riku.
-The false report of Doffy’s step down was a great twist.
-A bit more development on COC haki.

Cons.
-Rebecca was simply put a terrible character. Oda really let me down on her. At the beginning I thought awesome she was a competent female gladiator of the colosseum which I was excited to see. Then it all went downhill. Such a failure of a character and Oda really dropped the ball here.
-Too many characters. Simply put the amount of characters in this arc was ridiculous. Though I loved alot of them there were just too many and they made the arc way too cluttered.
-Fight skipping. This goes with the above for it was a reason alot of fighting was skipped because there was too much doing on and alot of stuff sadly got off panelled.
-Tebol and Diamante deserved better. At least Pika got something of a fight and pulled some cool stuff. These too just didn’t get the justice they deserved being a high executive.
-Usopp bailng on the Dwarves. Yes he redeems himself but still this one made me cringe. Why Usopp come on!
-The indestructible Birdcage. What the hell was this thing made of that even Fujitora couldn’t break it! It just raises so many eyebrows that an admiral couldn’t cut the cage.
-Mansherry healing, yeah I knew we were bound to get a healing devil fruit eventually but still it is just too convenient for my tastes. At least her dandelion tears are temporary.
-Pacing issues. Especially noticeable during the run up to Lv 4 and the birdcage pushing. Too many wasted panels!
-Speeches galore. I like Gatz for sure but his speech was just too long at the end! Same with King Riku’s.. Again pacing issues.

I still don't think it can be chalked up that because the Cora flashback and Doflamingo as a villain are best-ever level quality. They're as good as or better than anything he has ever done in the past. That can't be the work of a man who's losing the touch he used to have. It doesn't make sense. If he was losing his touch we'd just get a bunch of stuff that feels consistently mediocre and fails to engage, I feel. Instead we get soaring highs with deep falls. Oda is not having problems creating highs, he's having problems avoiding the lows. We've seen a lot of weird and unfortunate decisions and strange priorities drag down the overall consistency of the arc but the highs are as high as they've ever been. I say that what he needs to do is get more consistent. All 3 post-timeskip arcs have the same issue, simplified. They've got some great highs but suffer from a lot of lows and scenes that just don't work very well. It's hard to pinpoint the causes, which probably aren't the same for each arc either. But there is an issue with consistency. It's more of an issue with implementation/execution than the content itself. It's almost as if you've got an entire top-notch arc in Dress Rosa as it stands if you'd just cut and copy and paste around its parts a bit to feel more coherent and better prioritized. I've never felt that with an OP arc before, Oda is having a lot of trouble getting his ideas onto paper as well as he used to, trouble structuring them up, prioritizing. It feels very messy at times. But the good part is that's something that can be addressed whereas if a writer has lost his touch, his engagement for the series, he's just lost it. I feel the complete opposite of that from Oda. He's ultra-dedicated and sprawling with ideas and the will to deliver them. I'm a mix of hopeful and concerned for the remainder of the series. I deeply hope he manages to execute future arcs more consistently but the really big stuff will probably be great regardless, just as Doflamingo was absolutely stompingly fantastic in this arc despite all its flaws.
I blame his current editor for that! the post TS editor should be fired and the one who handled SA should be brought back in(if he's not assisting anymore). Oda is only a human, he could forget and overlook things, loose focus or focus too much on the not so important stuff..etc and that's where the editor should step in and give insightful advices with all consideration and other consideration(readers..etc on mind).
Ps: That's my understanding of the editor's role.

We still have so much more to go and this arc was part of a bigger plot point.

I mean Law taking down Kaidos supply was only the mere tip of the plan. I believe that Law never originally planned to go further himself (probably wrong), however his ultimate goal was taking down Doflamingo. Doflamingo has lost his entire lifes work in this day.
Now that Luffy has impressed Law in a way and also now knows Luffy is a conqueror, there's going to be a lot more to the plan.. but big mom first.
Kaido is going to get the den den mushi treatment Big Mom did.

Yes cause that's totally what I meant. The guys that Dellinger took out were irrelevant. They did nothing before and most likely they'll do nothing afterwards (at most they'll be allies with the Straw Hat Crew in the final arc as background characters).
Personally I expect them to show up at least three times. One for each Yonko fight :ninja:
Doffy is a Shichibukai and the king of one island. He has 13 full time officers! The Yonkos will certainly have enough officers for the strawhats and their allies.
I guess now that the arc is closing, I've never said anything on all the Rebecca talk that I've seen here and there for a long time, but will say one thing.
Rebecca is a 16-year-old in an overwhelming situation involving life and death who never wanted to fight at all, but was forced to by her father so that she could stay alive. Her character is basically a random kid thrown into a war zone who didn't ever want to be. It's her non-party and she can cry if she wants to.
Well, technically this battle was a 2 vs. 1. Law did the most part by critically wounding Doflamingo.
They're Pirates. Doffy is the one who double teamed Law, he even says so himself. It's not like Luffy was in better condition(or has an awakened df that can effortlessly stitch him up and does destructive attacks without too much efforts).

Doflamingo was extremely versatile, Luffy can create numerous combat abilities that make him more powerful.

I could stand Shirahoshi's crying. Rebecca's problem is that she flip flops on her convictions and when she does decide to hop into the fray of battle, she immediately cowers and screams "SAVE ME insert Kyros or Luffy here!!!", and becomes a liability whose uselessness harms the people around her. From a real world perspective you can understand "well she's just a kid in a bad situation", but as a reader of a story her existence is annoying and forces characters I actually like (Robin for example) to sit on the sidelines and babysit her while getting severely injured in the process. Don't have her forsake her promise to her mother, a pacifist ideal that Oda hammered into our heads during Kyros' fight with Diamante that she sincerely wants to follow, only to have her run away to pick a fight and immediately fail. Don't introduce her character establishing flashback by having her say "I don't want to be protected, I want to protect others!" only to have her will instantly waver whenever she picks a fight and cry for someone to protect her.

^^Awakening is an extra that happens rarely and presumably requires a lot of intensive training/battles and time to develop, it's evidently much more rare than Haki(for now). It's clearly an advantage over the regular df abilities.

Maybe oda is portraying 16 year old girls that think they can solve their daddy's problems just isn't going to work and you're gonna need help anyway.

Luffy has uncontrollable and unmaintainable power. Doesn't stop him from bbeating more skilled opponents.
Here's my thoughts on the arc. I'm really tempted to give it a C+ just for how terrible the fights were and how drawn out the latter half was. The Donquiqote Family, in my personal opinion, were terrible villains. People keep saying how extremely well developed they were, but I don't see it for most of them. A lot of them are just one-note gag characters. Which isn't bad, but they aren't good fighters either. Seriously, these guys are supposed to be the crew of a Shichibukai? The only members that didn't suck were Doflamingo, Vergo, Pica (yes I know he was constantly running away, but you can't deny that being a living mountain and changing the landscape of an island is impressive), Senor Pink (best member by far), Gladius (dude had the best fight out of all of them), and Baby 5 (don't know, I just like her). That and Fujitora pretty much doing nothing this entire arc is mind boggling (yes I know there's most likely a reason, but when the Birdcage is about to kill everyone and Doflamingo is so injured that you could easily kill him, I doubt the Government is gonna be that pissed). But overall, the flashback, Sabo, a pretty good first half, Gear 4, and some enjoyable new characters (Bartolomeo, Chinjao, Cavendish, and some others) I think balances it out to a B-. Not bad, but definitely the weakest big arc in One Piece.
You realize just how irrelevant whether a character is a good fighter or not is , right ?

Maybe they weren't as powerful, but they were way more interesting, and had way better fights and fighting styles. Machvise's whole fighting style is just a rehash of the worst Baroque Works agent, and Dellinger is incredibly mediocre. Honestly, a lot of them just seemed like people with no combat ability at all, and just powerful Devil Fruits.
Who gives a crap ? Are your character standards that low to the point where it's all about combat and ability rather than , you know their CHARACTER ? I can understand if you were only talking about them power-wise but to judge their entire character based on combat and ability is just …... ridiculous .
I see nothing wrong with Rebecca.
She's just a stubborn 16 year old girl that wants to help, but when ever she encounters overwhelming odds, she gets scared and starts crying.
Oda gave her this kind of role, which is better than turning super saiyan and giving Doflamingo or Diamante a good fight, which would be utter bull shit, considering her level of fighting skills.
Now regarding her actions, I think it's normal. Considering that people have different reactions to different situations.
Those dwarves better have a roasted fighting bull fish ready for Luffy. I bet he's real hungry after the fight.
