This might be a stupid question but do you where i can find scan of this newspaper?!
One piece prints 300 million copies!
-
-
I seriously don´t understand why different sources state different things regarding the 300 million, namely either that it is "sold" or "copies printed". Since this should be an official source and CCC translated it, i tend to believe that it is "sold" but also seen quote believable sources saying "printed"
Actually… it's written in English. I just trans_cribed_ :P
-
Well it didn't take that long for someone to try and sell the advert poster…
Still it's an amazing poster. When I read the thread this morning that they were selling them today, I just rushed to the nearest super market and bought it. I'm really gonna frame this. This is an amazing poster, I feel like I own a piece of history. :ninja:
-
@CCC:
Just found it as you were posting :P
It's A19 in mine, though… (?)
Anyway, looks great. Here's the text at the bottom:
One Piece is an epic adventure featuring "Straw Hat" Luffy, captain of a band of pirates. It recounts his exploits all over the world in search of the treasure known as "One Piece" together with his companions whom Luffy meets on his adventures. The story, its characters, and its perspective have enchanted not only children but also men and women of all ages. With over 300 million volumes of the series sold in Japan since its first release 16 years ago, One Piece has set an unbelievable record among Japanese comics currently in the market. The series' popularity overseas has steadily increased as well, and to date, One Piece has been published in over 25 countries.
You have the New York edition, where it's on A19. The national edition has it on A15.

Uhm so yeah, I've searched everywhere here where I live but only managed to grab a bad black/white issue which was printed in the store where I bought it (and it was way more expensive than it should be)… and it's too small. Can anyone sell me an issue? That would be great, I can pay via Paypal or VISA card. I really need that awesome colored Luffy, would make a nice poster^^

I blame scanlations or rather aggregation sites. While true fans use both illegal and legal means to read the manga, the majority will have never thought about paying for the actual tank. Lame indeed.

Well, Dragon Ball has 80 Million copies outside Japan! Taking that in account and that One Piece has 1.7 more volumes than Dragon Ball we have that Dragon Ball was 3 times more popular than One Piece is now.
Given the slow grow of One Piece popularity(that in some places is still not that great) selling a third of the super popular Dragon Ball is a great achievement. -

What? Are you sure? I thought that dragonball sold in japan 170 million but worldwide 350 million. Which means that it sold 180million outside japan.
-
db 230 million worldwide. 350 is made up by butthurt DB fans.
-
Ok, and I messed up the japan sales. It's 150 million^^. So yeah, 80 million(42 volumes)outside japan. That is something compared to lousy 45 million(68 volumes) -.-Any numbers from naruto. I read something about 90 million which sounds too much.

This is definitely the greatest problem hindering overseas sales. In Japan, illegal aggregators and those that use them get in huge trouble; they're often arrested. Here, and in most other places, it's commonplace. VIZ's move to (simultaneous) digital releases has helped fight the damage scanlations were doing. Now, many people can read either just the legal release or both support the legal release and read the illegal release, which is at least a better compromise. However, people need to still support the official release.
Forty-five million copies sold overseas is not bad by any means, considering the current market, the niche manga market, and the death of book stores and retail outlets. It's actually quite an impressive figure when you think about it. One Piece in Japan is sold EVERYWHERE, from 7/11s to train stations to book stores to literally EVERYWHERE. Here it's either online or in a book store, and the latter is dying quickly. Without a real outlet to give One Piece mainstream exposure, it's becoming more and more difficult to bring any popularity to the series, and yet, One Piece becomes more and more popular everyday! This is despite scanlations and despite a shrinking retail economy.
One Piece has certainly fought the odds, and that 45 million number is hugely impressive, and the numbers Naruto and other series garner are impressive as well. However, I believe the trend shows that One Piece is heading towards a much greater success internationally than Naruto and others were able to obtain. Call me optimistic, but the future is One Piece.

Heh, call me pessimistic but I doubt the success will be that great in the future. Why? Because few people allow themselves to spend +600$ into one series. And that…make sense to me, sort of. Especially in the U.S where the price is quite huge. 45M gathered in the last 10 years is ok I guess. But I doubt it will go much higher, it's a bit too late, because of that price issue.
On another hand, France alone gathered 10M of copies while its population is twice less than Japan's. I'm a bit sad for the lack of love from Shueisha into France. But I guess that makes sense since Viz Media is part of Shueisha.
-
As long as their service is US only, they will only lose and lose money. Should have thought twice before giving the licenses two more than one publisher, but who is to blame when the japanese market is soooo much bigger anyway. oh One day, one day.^^
Amazon has it all too, so I won't put so much blame on bookstores, not when the last manga I bought from one was in 2006 or so.

How much sell Naruto in Japan and outside Japan?

How much sell Naruto in Japan and outside Japan?
Naruto in Japan has around 140 Millions copies sold, in the world around 220 Millions(if we guess that it sold the same as Dragon Ball - 80 Millions).

You just had to be that guy asking that….lol.
-
This was a one day appearance in the paper?
-
http://www.nytimes.com/content/help/backcopies.html Thought this might be useful to some people. Here you can order back copies from the last 90 days, and I believe it ships outside the U.S. as well. This is how I ordered mine!
-

It's an international full page ad in one of the most famous newspaper of the world, what else did you expect?

indeed DBZ will always have something special to some people who discovered it when they were kids.I love that Ad, but heh? 80$ there is some wild dudes who were ready to sell a kidney for it lol

Yeah Manga in France are really popular, so popular that you will always find a manga even in a tiny supermarket LOL
One Piece is also pretty popular in France, i'm glad so i can find their stuff easily like manga,DVD's BD's etc… that is all i need along Inoue Takehiko works! -
Whoa, 80 bucks! I think those eBay bidders are getting ripped off. For $10 more, you can get a reprint from the NY Times Store on HQ, long lasting acid-free paper that won't yellow like the newsprint…Or they can just get a back copy for like $6.
-
I saw that One Piece sales number was just updated to 345 million world wide, and personally 45 million outside of Japan is quite impressive considering the less exposure it gets compared to few other milestone titles.
-

That's one way of seeing it. Another one is that the internet does a lot to popularize foreign works. For a manga released in the 90's/early 2000's, sales in most parts of the world relied almost entirely on word-of-mouth, when manga was seen as much more of a cult thing than it is today.
-
Are you implying manga outside of Japan is no longer a cult subculture?
Becasue it still is. Unless you live in Asia, where it was never one to begin with.

I didn't say that, i said "it was more cult than it is today", which means it still is. It's just that 20 years ago manga releases in the West were almost nonexistent - heck, the word "manga" was pretty much alien. There was what, Akira and a couple others mirrored titles that few people knew existed. In comparison, it is definitely something more well known now.
My point is that saying scanlation is 'now" affecting sales doesn't sound fair for places where manga was barely a thing in the pre-internet age, especially when the internet itself helped a whole deal to make anime/manga more popular around the world.

yeah well it depends of the country, here in France since the 80's or even earlier anime and manga started getting place in french habit and 90's was already a culture, some were against it and some for it, but it indeed grows so much that it's normal to have anime in theaters and manga in super markets :)

Think of it this way, if the bidder is from outside the US, the seller would have to spend some serious cash just for shipping. If the bidder is from US its kinda their fault for not researching about it. Also is this new listing on eBay from The One Piece Podcast?

Do you realize it's super-cheap to send a newspaper? Not to mention that overseas shipping is not included in the auction price.

Yep, that's from us. It's free for domestic shipping, but I just shipped three newspapers to friends in Japan and it was around $20.00.
I also heard that the backorders may not have the advertisement, but I'm not sure if that's the case or not. If anyone ordered it, let me know.

Just wondering, is this the kind of HQ reprint the Times offers?

I don't consider $20 being cheap. The first seller probably doesn't either since they just changed their shipping policy in the new auction.
and does anyone have the Date/section/page number, or can they find the One Piece page by description alone?
On the national edition it's on the November 21, 2013 issue: page A15. Not sure if it's on a different page on the New York edition.
-
A kind soul helped me to get it and for free, i just paid 3$ for the shipping, i need to frame it now!

Happy New Year from Oda-san!!!

Pierre Thanks Redon.

Haha, it's the year of the horse.
