@Mr.:
Gremmy was great. I really enjoyed the fight. kenpachi always has the most interesting matces. his shikai was revealed (can literally cut through anything…even SPACE) and his opponent was unconventionally strong.
im surprised that no one mentioned the mega foreshadowing in this chapter. looks like the afterafterlife is not a fun place. kenpachis body cant withstand his own power. thats how he will die, probably
Your sarcasm eludes me.
-
…did it seriously take you this long to figure this out? It should have been very clear VERY early that Rukia freaking lied to that poor schmuck in chapter 1.
lol. afterafterlife. dying again after you've already died once before. gremmy isn't going to soul society. his power and soul go to yhwach. what happens to his consciousness? and if something like this is possible, what about souls that died in SS prior (izuru, rangiku, ya)? where do they go?
contrary to popular opinion around here, I actually like bleach and naruto… they're better read in volumes though.
-
I remember when I believed Hell would be an important part of the story. How silly I was.
That reminds me, I never watched that movie placed in Hell, with that bad guy with the lantern or something. Just read that special manga chapter with Szayel and Aaroniero falling into Hell. Or was it an anime episode, can't remember?

Is this annoying anyone else in this thread!?
I click on last and it sends me back to 417.

Been like that since April Fools prank.
Kinda got used to it. Beelzebub has 11 ghost pages, lol.

It's not annoying, there's a deep philosophical philosophy in the meaning of that 2 extra pages.

the trial we all have to take in our lives? suppressing the anger within us? u might be on to something

I still support my theory that Karakura Town is the actual afterlife/Heaven.

I still support my theory that Karakura Town is the actual afterlife/Heaven.
If I was a person in that town and then later found out that I was already in heaven. I would power up enough to personally poke the king of Soul Society in his stupid eye.

Given Kubo's pretentious ego, what are the odds that he'll write himself in as the Soul King?

10 dollars on anagram, calling it now

Isn't Aizen already his self-insert?

Lol, his name has 4 syllables(Eight letters). It's going to be as subtle as anything else in this series.

I like Naruto, but Bleach I'm iffy about.
-
They both are objectively bad and there is no denying that.^^

Unless you are in the mirror universe. There, both Bleach and Naruto just are awesome. Naruto really is a masterpiece remaining faithful to its leitmotif and delivering an epic final arc with a great final battle against some of the best worked out antagonists of all time. And Bleach… I just can't believe how detailed someone can draw. It takes so long to fully grasp the amount of detail put into each and every panel.
Fairy Tail is awesome there as well, but the characters could be a little bit more revealing. Also Togashi is the most dedicated workaholic of all time. Seriously, he should take just a very few breaks for the sake of his own health.

I can't believe people legitimately say stuff like this.
I'm not so sure on the Togashi one, though. -

Problem with that world is One Piece has a small and undetailed world, new characters pop out unexpectedly without any kind of foreshadowing, bounties measure power level and Oda takes long hiatuses every once in a while. Plus he works 5 hours a day. Draws a lot of big panels and his art is less detailed.

One Piece was cancelled after a year for being unsuccessful; no one even remembers it today.

one piece was cancelled after a year for being unsuccessful; no one even remembers it today.
But it had so much potential!
(Lol, it was supposed to be in all caps. Didn't know there was a limitation.)

both naruto and bleach are different series than they were when they started but thats not necessarily a bad thing. fairy tail is the same and it feels static. naruto couldve expanded on the side characters but kishi was more interested in teaching tweens and teens about life through a story adapted for an adolescent mindset.
with bleach, I think that in the beginning of the series the plot was more important. but reading later volumes (and their poems) indicate that kubo is more interested in warrior ethos. I find bleach much more interesting with that view. id love to see a remake of the anime done more in the style of the manga

@Mr.:
both naruto and bleach are different series than they were when they started but thats not necessarily a bad thing.
But in this case, yes, it's a very bad thing.
naruto couldve expanded on the side characters but kishi was more interested in teaching tweens and teens about life through a story adapted for an adolescent mindset.
I….don't understand how those two are mutually exclusive.
Also, so life is about having everything automatically granted to you through destiny and being controlled by your emotions to the point of ludicrous obsession?
with bleach, I think that in the beginning of the series the plot was more important. but reading later volumes (and their poems) indicate that kubo is more interested in warrior ethos. I find bleach much more interesting with that view.
And even this Kubo fails at. All that warrior ethos stuff is utterly pretentious and nonsensical. I mean, what was Kubo trying to convey with the Zaraki/Gremmy fight? That Gremmy had finally met someone who could legitimately challenge? Well, any meaning that might have had is lost since Gremmy was using his powers in a totally incompetent way.
id love to see a remake of the anime done more in the style of the manga
So no backgrounds and incredibly tedious pacing?

sales say otherwise
I….don't understand how those two are mutually exclusive.
what are your main complaints with the series?
Also, so life is about having everything automatically granted to you through destiny and being controlled by your emotions to the point of ludicrous obsession?
of course not. i just think that kishi has created an appealing story for younger teenagers, who are all about emotion and melodrama. the destiny angle is justification for narutos ego throughout the series. maybe other readers with a dropout mindset in japan can be given hope that their efforts arent in vain. maybe theyre 'chosen', which is a very hopeful message for japanese children (a country where your entire life can go to hell if you screw up just once). it teaches them not to listen to others' berating and judgment as well. it's only the perspective of one man, but maybe naruto's message will lead someone to success.
And even this Kubo fails at. All that warrior ethos stuff is utterly pretentious and nonsensical.
only as much as your efforts in analyzing it, no offense meant
I mean, what was Kubo trying to convey with the Zaraki/Gremmy fight? That Gremmy had finally met someone who could legitimately challenge? Well, any meaning that might have had is lost since Gremmy was using his powers in a totally incompetent way.
we won't fully know until we see the volume (and poem), but i thought that fight was about gaining the killer's edge for the first time (hence, 'the killer's high'). gremmy is someone so naturally powerful/talented that he has no killing intent or desire to win. kenpachi changes that–he is the first adversary that can seemingly do the impossible. gremmy wants to kill for the first time in battle. it's the 'worthy opponent' battle that knocks the undisputed strongest off his pedestal.
gremmy's death is plot related. he died because his body literally couldn't handle kenpachi's full strength after being accurately gauged. he doesn't believe that kenpachi's body can handle it either, which is also pretty likely (if he ever removes his eyepatch again).
btw, whats happening to yachiru in this page? look at her body, the lower left side.
So no backgrounds and incredibly tedious pacing?
the pacing is actually really great in volumes. the pacing is only tedious weekly, hence the anime's tedious pacing in the latter half of the arrancar arc. typically, i think that 4-6 chapters should be adapted per episode with kubo's pacing.
as for the lack of backgrounds, i actually think that the original anime was too 'loud.' the sparse backgrounds convey emptiness and space. the muted colors and kubo's use of toner are stylistic choices he does intentionally, imo.
@monkey d destiny
yes and no. of course, a story doesnt have to change in order to stay good. oda should just keep doing what hes doing–it's great. -

yes and no. of course, a story doesnt have to change in order to stay good. oda should just keep doing what hes doing–it's great.Sales don't necessarily equate to quality. And Bleach sales have been on a very noticeable decline since the end of the aizen bullshit. It's pretty much only sustained on a long time fanbase at this point and those type of people are the type who feel the need to justify the fact that they've been reading it for so long. And even that's dwindling. And honestly, blank backgrounds CAN be a stylistic choice, utonly when used appropriately. They can increase impact or tighten focus, but that only works when 90% of your panels aren't like that. And even when Kubo does have backgrounds they're always really boring and sterile. And it's a weekly series. There isno excuse for a weekly series to have such awful pacing on a week to week basis.
Also, I can't help but laugh at anyone who thinks their is any actual deep meaning in Kubo's poems and not just boring pretentiousness.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also I fail to see how Naruto's destiny shit is EVER a more positive message than being able to define who you are yourself and not being constricted by circumstances forced upon you that it originally did

@Mr.:
sales say otherwise
Sales have really been dropping for awhile now, actually.
@Mr.:
what are your main complaints with the series?
That it started with so much promise, but never went anywhere with it.
If it was a terrible manga from the getgo, we wouldn't even be having this conversion.
But no: At first the characters were really interesting. The manga was fresh and fun! There were a TON of interesting concepts, characters were their own people and had their own personalities (as well as awesome designs), and it was a blast seeing Kubo turn cliches on their heads.
But… after SS, it started deteriorating. Questions were left unanswered (What was that extra chapter about Mizuiro about? Why can Yoruichi turn into a cat?), characters that weren't popular or new were forgotten (like Ichigo's other friends and various Shinigami, as well as other side characters like Don Konoji (here I thought that guy was supposed to have a spinoff novel based off him, but noooo)), concepts started becoming ludicrous and didn't make sense, and only the popular shinigami really got to fight and 'develop' (Orihime and Chad were totally nerfed). Pacing slowed to a crawl, and the detail he used to put in the art vanished. People would die, and expect us to care without giving us any reason to have emotional investment. The powers he would come up with were OP to raise the stakes, but would then be nerfed so our heroes could actually win.
At this point, the only reason I'm still reading it is because I've been following it for nearly a decade. Why stop now?
-
So, anyone else remembering the time Robby used editing to cut down an entire chapter of Bleach to 3 pages without really losing anything important?
-
Sales don't necessarily equate to quality.
quality is something judged on an individual basis, thus it can be entertaining to some and not others

despite dwindling sales, it's still one of the top selling manga in japan. a new marketing push/reboot could increase sales

jump series are published weekly, but then compiled into volumes. bleach's volumes are always thematic in some sense, with a title, a poem, and a message. as for his art style, different opinions i guess
Also, I can't help but laugh at anyone who thinks their is any actual deep meaning in Kubo's poems and not just boring pretentiousness.
that's sort of a facile view, isn't it? why would he write the poems in the first place? 'look at me, i can write poetry'? his poems are almost always thematic and correspond to character ideologies
Also I fail to see how Naruto's destiny shit is EVER a more positive message than being able to define who you are yourself and not being constricted by circumstances forced upon you that it originally did
being able to define who you are yourself and not being constricted by circumstances forced upon you is the message of naruto. that's basically what he said to gaara, obito, nagato, etc. as i said, the destiny bit is what ties it all together–justification for naruto's confidence. i think, therefore i am. i'm willing to let this slide because it's clear that kishi wanted to do this whole prophecy from the beginning, back when he wanted naruto to be about wizards but it was too similar to harry potter

Kubo writes poems because he's an egotistical prick who thinks he's way more talented than he really is. This is also the reason he plasters his poems on everything. And lol at Obito, the guy who spent most of his life pretending to be someone else because he was manipulated being an example of choosing your own destiny. Gaara maybe except most of what was bad about Gaara's situation was an idiotic misunderstanding caused by an absolutely idiotic decision during a recent retcon. And I don't think you really understand the concept of defying destiny
-
Here's MY poem:
I'm the King,
you dino-guy.
I'll smash you now
so say 'goodbye'. -

i think you misunderstood. the 'choose your own destiny' path is what naruto preaches to the villains. so gaara doesn't have to be a killer because he has a monster inside of him–he can choose his own destiny. obito doesn't need to destroy the world because he lost someone important to him--he can choose his own destiny. etc

Just to be clear, Kubo has his poems plastered all over the pieces of furniture he owns. I wish I was making this shit up

At this point I'm not sure if we should bother. You seem not to understand the difference of "liking something" and "something that is good".
You've seem to have started into the "thats just your opinion" type arguments.

i could respond to this if you articulated what makes something "good" and what makes something "bad" (and specifically in bleach i guess), but few posters have done so
Sales have really been dropping for awhile now, actually.
you're right, but it's still an obscenely popular series
That it started with so much promise, but never went anywhere with it.

But… after SS, it started deteriorating.
it pretty much changed into a completely different series after they entered hueco mundo, i think
Questions were left unanswered (What was that extra chapter about Mizuiro about? Why can Yoruichi turn into a cat?),
i thought that mizuiro was going to be important too, but maybe kubo just likes him. he's one of my favorite characters, actually. yoruichi's part in the story hasn't finished yet and i guess maybe mizuiro still has time too
characters that weren't popular or new were forgotten (like Ichigo's other friends and various Shinigami, as well as other side characters like Don Konoji (here I thought that guy was supposed to have a spinoff novel based off him, but noooo)),
there are so many characters in bleach that i think kubo only includes what interests him. many of ichigo's friends were interesting on a micro level, but the series has gone macro…if that makes any sense. they don't really fit in with this giant war
concepts started becoming ludicrous and didn't make sense,
can you give me some examples? and which translation did you read?
and only the popular shinigami really got to fight and 'develop' (Orihime and Chad were totally nerfed).
orihime was never a fighter–she just kind of healed things. chad is disappointing too, but both of these characters still have time
Pacing slowed to a crawl, and the detail he used to put in the art vanished.
i think that the art's style is very interesting–i don't really mind the lack of backgrounds in it. as for pacing, it's a better read once compiled. you're right in that it's slowly published, but altogether it can be pretty engrossing. most characters get some action, which is good for a series with so many.
People would die, and expect us to care without giving us any reason to have emotional investment.
i don't think kubo is using death as a vehicle to play with our emotions…he's asking us to think about the dialogue and what's being said. the espada all represented a different aspect of death and their battles/flashbacks all focused on this.
The powers he would come up with were OP to raise the stakes, but would then be nerfed so our heroes could actually win.
what do you mean by 'OP' and 'nerf'?
At this point, the only reason I'm still reading it is because I've been following it for nearly a decade. Why stop now?
stop until it ends, then read it all at once. it will annoy you much less and your opinion might change. i stopped reading bleach on a weekly basis until recently and caught up–it was very enjoyable that way
-
I think if I were to read Bleach all at once I would get an aneurysm.

The dialogue in Bleach is awful. I still remember that one godawful speech from the fullbringer arc about how the majority always oppresses the minority that makes very little sense as is (because most people don't even know the full bringers exist) but maes even less sense when you realize that in actual history it's pretty much a small group of elites who hold all the power in societies. And lol at thinking the espada death thing was planned and not thrown in at the last minute to explain Barrigan's powers. Also, you're forgetting Sasakibe's death and how it was "so noble". Which was especially hilarious considering it was the exact same situation as Ikkaku, except for some reason it was bad in Ikkaku's case but not in Sasakibe's.
Other huge inconsistencies include saying Yamamoto just didn't want to involve Ichigo and his friends, despite the fact that that contradicts his actual stance of "Don't bother wasting time chasing after a traitor, we need you to fight here with us"

Honestly I can see how people can enjoy Bleach, but it's those type of people that don't know any better and somehow can turn off their brains while reading. That's understandable though, Bleach has a lot of pretty looking fingers and faces. that can draw your attention.
(To be honest though, Kubo's art is great and his lighting/shadowing as well as angles/perspectives really are a testament to his professionalism but…everything else reeks of laziness and/or apathy).
-
But no: At first the characters were really interesting. The manga was fresh and fun! There were a TON of interesting concepts, characters were their own people and had their own personalities (as well as awesome designs), and it was a blast seeing Kubo turn cliches on their heads.

I'm glad I got to choose my own destiny as a great artist and this reincarnated spirit of Michelangelo residing in me had nothing to do with it.

It's near the bottom of the weekly rankings almost constantly.
@Mr.:
i thought that mizuiro was going to be important too, but maybe kubo just likes him. he's one of my favorite characters, actually. yoruichi's part in the story hasn't finished yet and i guess maybe mizuiro still has time too
This is the final arc. I'll eat my left sock if Kubo manages to incorporate either of those.
@Mr.:
there are so many characters in bleach that i think kubo only includes what interests him. many of ichigo's friends were interesting on a micro level, but the series has gone macro…if that makes any sense. they don't really fit in with this giant war
I don't think Kubo has been interested in this series for a long time (my guess is depression, but that's a whole nother topic entirely).
And this isn't One Piece: Ichigo's pals are still in the hub (Karakura town); with how much focus was put on them in the beginning, it doesn't make sense that the most Kubo's done with them lately (read: deicide all those years ago) is make them run around like chickens with their heads cut off.
@Mr.:
can you give me some examples? and which translation did you read?
Tsukishima's power that LITERALLY insert him back in time, other kid who could put other people in his vidya games (the fullbringers in general, really), imagination kid who could bend the rules of the universe to him, etc…
Has anyone directed you to Applied Logic yet? It has a whole ton of stuff that points out what's wrong with bleach.
@Mr.:
orihime was never a fighter–she just kind of healed things. chad is disappointing too, but both of these characters still have time
Didn't Orihime use her shields for attack purposes back in SS? She also defeated that one hollow by herself way back when individual hollows were a big deal. I miss those little fairy things.
Kubo said himself that the fullbringer arc was "Chad's arc", but look at how relevant he is there.
And seeing as how they're nowhere near captain level, they literally have no use right now.
@Mr.:
i think that the art's style is very interesting–i don't really mind the lack of backgrounds in it.
You're free to think that, but all I see is laziness and a failure to set any kind of mood.
@Mr.:
as for pacing, it's a better read once compiled. you're right in that it's slowly published, but altogether it can be pretty engrossing.
I'll give you that it's a more interesting read than Naruto right now (as bad as Bleach is, Naruto's just stale), but it's only slightly better compiled because of how little happens each chapter.
@Mr.:
most characters get some action, which is good for a series with so many.
But they haven't.
Only the popular characters like Kenpachi and Rukia have gotten to have fights. Everyone else is just worfed or brushed off to the side.
@Mr.:

OP: overpowered.
Nerf: Making a strong character suddenly weak for no reason other than to serve plot.
@Mr.:
stop until it ends, then read it all at once. it will annoy you much less and your opinion might change. i stopped reading bleach on a weekly basis until recently and caught up–it was very enjoyable that way
It's enjoyable when you turn off your brain and don't think of the chapter in context with all the others.
And again, check out Applied Logic. It's easier to read Glib's already-written arguments than having me type out lots of stuff.
… ? When did this happen?
Rukia and Ichigo were pretty much the opposite of the standard shonen hero-heroine pair (tomboy, tough, and smart with down-to-earth responsible semi-jerkass vs. girly ditz that's useless with idiot hero who couldn't think his way out of a cardboard box).
Orihime was the one to save Tatsuki from that hollow (so a cliche flip twofer: a guy wasn't doing the saving AND it was the girly girl doing it)
Uyruu is a character who you'd think is the total stoic broody angstmuffin type, but he was infact a total dweeb.
Ichigo's social circle in general at the time was awesome: instead being AAAAAAALL ALOOOOOOOONE like most shonen schoolboy heroes, he had FRIENDS. And these friends had their OWN LIVES AND SOCIAL CIRCLES OF THEIR OWN and their lives DIDN'T REVOLVE AROUND HIM OH MY GOOOOOOOOOD.
Generally the bad dude - morality pet combo has said morality pet being innocent and kind and moe kawaii uguuuuuu, but Yachiru is JUST AS messed up as Kenny (still mad we never got to see any real daddy-daughter interactions, but eh).
There's more, but it's late and I'm tired.

Sigh, all this back and forth trying to explain Bleach and Naruto to no end, we already saw this plenty of times.
So~o, who's Mizuiro again? -

But these arguments will never get old

I like this little trivia on the Mizuiro guy:
- In the Official Character Book SOULs, a part of his description says 'He has a cute face, but he's actually a ????'. At the moment, Tite Kubo has not said anything about this blanked out word, leaving it unidentified
Good mystery Kubo (assuming it WAS Kubo that wrote the guide book which is a mystery in itself but w/e). He's actually what? You're keeping me on my toes. What is he? WHAT?!

Apparently that book came out around Arrancar time?
So he was probably going to be an Espada or something. And then Kubo forgot.
Like Ulqiorra was going to secretly be Mizuiro or something silly because "what a twist!"Or actually, the more obvious answer is it's something to do with his liking older women that Kubo can't or is uncomfortable saying outright in a boy's manga databook, but I like my idea better. And Kubo did confirm the… classy placement of some of the female arrancar's hollow holes, so it might not be "he's actually a pervert!" or "Oedipus" whatever.

B-but, when he was around Aizen, he wasn't affected right? Mizuiro for Soul King, coz' why the fuck not?
