man this pissed me off. They couldn't show at least one new thing could they. While i enjoyed the paper mario part and to a lesser extent the epic mickey, there was nothing worth staying up for

Well, a lot of good games both first & third party wise, but where's the new announcements!?:wassat:
Nintendo is holding back a lot of things; What are they exactly planning in all of this?
This intrigues me greatly…
-
Just finished watching, and was very amused at the fan-rage on the chat. VERY amused.
I was a bit disappointed, but part of me expected this. Seems like Nintendo's idea of E3 has become to cover all the bases for the Fall, and then use the other conferences to announce projects for future years. Every single title covered in this conference was a 2012 title, but personally I want to know what else is on the horizon.
Also, with this considered I'm heavily disappointed that Fire Emblem Awakening was not announced for American release. Very very very disappointed. -

Oh yes, their idiocracy knows no bounds… lol
But I'm wondering what Nintendo is exactly planning here; Why hold back all of a sudden?

Favorite comment I saw in the chat: "I'm selling my 3DS Tomorrow!!"
Haha, people.

More like dumbasses.
But, perhaps there's hope Noqanky!!!
EDIT: I am REALLY psyched to know that Alucard is in Castlevania: Mirror of Fate. And judging by how he looked in the artwork, it pretty much confirms him for Lords of Shadow 2. HYPE UP!!! :D
-
There will be a twist at the end where Reggie just casually walks on stage in the middle of someone else's presentation and says "oh yeah by the way, we've got Earthbound, Fire Emblem, and some cool partnerships with Valve coming down the pipe so laterz"
-
Not a weird E3. A bad one. They haven't been that good at E3 for a while now. I think 2011 was better tho.
Hell, even if MS's conference was "awful" in general, at least they showed games, and whether you guys like them or not doesn't change that. Halo 4, Gears of war, tomb raider, black ops 2, splinter cell. All "core" games. All sequels? Yeah, but the only truly new IP worth mentioning for all of E3 was Watch Dogs anyway. I'm not defending MS, either.
There's still TGS and fall conferences for Nintendo though. Their stocks going down doesn't scream "NINTENDO IS TEH DOOMED" out loud but it's certainly not a good thing.
-
Please tell me this isn't some sort of sick joke. If this is really true I'll be super excited
I don't think so. Rich is one of the last few good people at IGN who covers Nintendo properly. It is his official account; so I'm calling win on this one.
-
Yo dogs, I heard you peoples be selling your 3DS's for stupid reasons so Reggie decided to let us know one last thing right after the conference:

Like Aaron, I really hope that's not some sick sick joke and that we can actually count on that. Such an amazing game needs to come to US!

Wow, such hope … I gave up on the Earthbound franchise ever coming back since they've refused to even release it on the virtual console. It's one of the only Nintendo franchises I haven't played, and along with R.O.B. the only one represented in Smash Bros. that I haven't gotten my hands on.
-
Okay, that is dropping the bomb. Better late than never.
-
Earthbound has always been a touchy subject. You know that.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I hardly see the difference between telling us a game release at E3, or telling it any other day of the year. You're gonna buy it anyway, right? What do you want? More hype?
Yeah, I can't wait for Smash 4 to have it's big surprise, so that when it comes out finally, everyone can hate it because it's not as good as Melee.
-

Stocks do not a company make. Even Apple's stocks go down when they make announcements.
Yeah, this wasn't really the best E3 in general for anyone. Though IMO all the conferences had their good stuff, it just wasn't their best efforts_(Ubisoft blew them away though.)_. Nintendo though has been going the extra mile in terms of extra conferences and announcements through their Nintendo Direct coverages. Hopefully we'll get more of those throughout the months to come alongside their Fall & TGS conferences.

Alright, I must admit. I laughed shamefully.
The conferences weren't the best, but the content is at least worth looking forward to. Nintendo has to push further though… THEY MUST!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA! FUCKING LOL!
But in all seriousness, I'm hyped as shit for Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, Luigi's Mansion 2, Mickey Mouse and the Power of Illusion, and Kingdom Hearts 3DS. They all look like fun.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
E3 is there to show the games that are going to make them the most money. That's all.
And I'm 99% sure they don't have jackshit to show for Smash 4 yet.
-
He must feel like a purple Pikmin after dropping that megaton.Ok, too many gifs, but I just had to add this one
Throw in some dancing Homer and it works for Microsoft too
-
You should be 100% sure about that. Either way they can show other games at Nintendo Direct conferences and whatnot. Guess E3 isn't the big deal it used to be.
(feels left out of Nintendo Defense Force :( )
-
Like I said, they only showed the games they have ready to show, and only games that would make them money.
You know Nintendoland is going to make them a shit load of money. It's the expansion of Wii Sports, which we know made a shit load of money. E3 is no longer the nerdy hype machine that made us excited for game series that don't get the most attention. It's media. It's Electronic Entertainment, meaning not just video games, but music and movies.
Trust me, I don't want E3 to be that either, but it's what's happened.
However, I am sure that when Smash 4 is ready to be given a trailer, the trailer will be shown at E3 2013.
-
Trust me, I don't want E3 to be that either, but it's what's happened.
I believe you may be right.
On a different topic, I HOPE they at least show the first trailer to the new SSB title by TGS; What an epic feeling it would leave.

I'm happy if it makes Nintendo money.

There's no question that Nintendo is going to make money.
The question is, after this will they finally have enough to start enacting their plans for world domination.I think everyone's missing the most important thing. Why did Nintendo focus so much on Nintendoland?
It's because it's not just a game, it's their ideal.

Remember how much money Wii Sports made? Remember how revolutionary it was for including people who weren't gamers?
They're trying to recreate and expand on that, and I think Nintendoland is the answer. In other words…
I'd let the world be taken over by Nintendo any day! Better them than Capcom or EA.

some dude's impressions (posted on neogaf)
second day of wii u-related impressions.
so the day started over at **pikmin 3. i spent a while doing the find mii stuff on my 3ds so i wouldn't be spoiled by the guy taking forever on the demo. i spent about 12 minutes at the demo. 7 for the main game stuff and 5 for a boss battle. i haven't played pikmin npc, but i picked up the controls and it was like second nature. point the controller at the screen, push a to call pikmin. push b to throw them. use the z button to switch between types (this one was explained to me).
i haven't played pikmin 2 in eight years, but i think there's a somewhat new thing that each day or area is ranked on how much pokos you can make back at your ship. by the end of the demo, the guy said i had gotten pretty far, so at 955 pokos, i probably did reasonably well. you can get a silver and a gold medal for the day/area (i forgot to ask). the boss fight was using the rock pikmin to break open the shell and the red pikmin to murder the thing. all-in-all, it's pikmin all right. it looks very nice in person, but it was also very obviously a wii game at some point. it's not a graphical showcase, but it retains its charm pretty well.
i checked out **zombi u, more specifically, the part that was once killer freaks. i took control of the gamepad and placed zombies around the map. the guy playing the fps game on the cc pro went around trying to capture the flag while i was also using a zombie to capture the flag _and using zombies to kill him. you can spend 3 or 4 points to create generic zombies that will hunt out the duder, and 10 points to create a zombie made to capture the flag/zone. you can also spend 12 points to create a superfast zombie. your points as the gamepad guy increase steadily over time. in the end, i won this segment, and then i watched someone play the single-player game.
aside from some weird stuff with the zombies vanishing in a puff of smoke sometimes, the single player was pretty tense, especially with the stakes being that one bite kills you. there are ways around it- you can stab a zombie with a syringe to kill it, or push it back and then aim carefully at the head. i think the longest runtime i saw someone do was about 13 minutes. it looks more like a survival horror game than a traditional first-person shooter. sure is ugly though.
also, the triggers on the back are definitely not analog. or if they are, they're barely analog. this is true of the gamepad and the cc pro. i made sure to double check before i left.
after zombi u i checked out **project p-100 it's kinda got the feel of viewtiful joe but in 3d. you use the gamepad to draw a circle around civilians and add them to your gang. i didn't like this because there's no reference point, really. you also use the gamepad to draw up and up-and-right to draw a sword and gun respectively. if you use either one of those you can use it against enemies, but it depletes battery power. battery power can be rebuilt by mashing the x button which makes all the civilians rush the baddies and attack like pikmin. you can also defend and evade attacks as a group.
there was a part where you could go inside a building to solve a puzzle. the game then moved to the gamepad screen. i think everything involving the gamepad screen was pretty dumb and didn't need to happen. for instance, switching between types of civilian-weapons could have been done by pushing a shoulder button or even clicking an analog stick.
**assassin's creed iii was also in the ubisoft booth, but it was only the mulitplayer. this was another capture the flag type thing. if you were in an area capturing and the other team showed up, you could only stun them. if another team showed up in your area, you could murder them. i had a couple of kills myself, although i took down many civilians on accident (assuming they were actually the other team). one guy did pretty well in stunning two of us, laying down a smoke bomb, and nearly vanishing before another guy from our team killed him. i liked the multiplayer.
the only single player game being played was one kiosk at the nintendo booth. and this was being manned by a ubisoft employee only so no one else could play. according to the guy at the booth, the wii u version is 720p, 30fps, and that is the same across all consoles. the game is the same across all consoles (aside from the gamepad stuff on the wii u), and it looks the same across all consoles. the single-player itself looks pretty nice. i jumped in with the second assassin's creed and was really unsure about the change in scenery, but after today, i'm more interested in seeing how it turns out. i thought it was cool how main character man escaped up a ship's sails, bouncing up the ropes to get there. i was worried that setting this new game in relatively new places like 100 year-old boston and new york would make for few rooftops and platforming to be done, but that appears not to be the case (mostly). i'll keep an eye on this as well._
-
I think there may have been some cinfusion with the last part of my post.
When I said Nintendoland was their ideal, I meant like utopia. They want to turn Earth into Nintendoland.
Though I do agree with you, Insider, but the only way Nintendoland (the game) will be that profitable is if it's bundled like Wii Sports was, and then expanded on later (Resort?)
I don't see too many people going out of their way to drop money for this, especially if it's 60 bucks, because at it's core it's a water downed Mario Party.
Speaking of which, I wonder how long until we see a new one of those. I'm honestly surprised there isn't going to be one ready for launch. You think it be the perfect game to show off the controller.
-
well, now that the last conference is finally over, and I've calmed my ass down and seen some floor videos, I think what happened is this: The WiiU launch window and stuff was always gonna be "pikmin, mario, nintendoland, a few multiplats, a few b-list 3rd party games, dancing shit". And instead of showing us "oh whoa new zelda get hyyyype new 3d mario UNIVERSE smash bros teaser retros new game is starfox but with 600 levels maybe", and then dumping this completely average launch on us, they just came right out and said what the launch would be.
Now, my body was prepared for massive hype, and I think that's the smartest way to sell a console (because if you get people excited, they'll buy one and then wait for more news. if you bore them at first, they'll just stop paying attention to anything further), and Nintendo really should've gone that route. But I can't honestly say that the launch looks bad, or that the system itself looks bad.
I guess more than anything I'm baffled by what E3 has become, or what the companies think it is. The only people who watch it are "hardcore" gamers, and apparently marketing suits and "investors". And for some bizarre reason, the companies choose to cater to what the investors think the gamers want, instead of catering to what the gamers actually want. Or rather, they're catering to what the investors think will sell the big bucks. Which is kinda weird, because if I was a investor to nintendo who held such sway that I needed to be pleased, I would think I could just kinda ask what's coming out? Or get a special thing just for me? And I would be smart enough to know that a strong, hype E3 conference = excited gamers = $$$, and I wouldn't push all this random bullshit NO ONE WATCHING HONESTLY CARES ABOUT in the conference?
I think I might've said this before, or maybe I said it somewhere else, but all Nintendo needed was to, at the end of the conference, go "And that's our launch window lineup. But, that's not all. There will be more games on the way. Let me whet your appetite a little". cue cinematic trailer thrown together by Retro, not even having to show a single shred of gameplay or in-engine stuff, but displaying loud and clear "Retro Studios is working on starfox/metroid/f-zero. It will come. get your bodies ready." And that would've saved the conference, and delivered the necessary hype, and all it took was to prod Retro into slapping a short cinematic together, with no commitment to how the final product would play. Would that really have been that hard? Or is Retro seriously not gotten anything together at all?
-
I liked the 3DS conference. Sure I was disappointed that we knew everything but meh. Most of the titles I'll probably pick up.
And at least we know Nintendo's gonna have some games out for Christmas. (hell. March is gonna be busier than Christmas for games at this rate)
Nice to see America is getting Fire Emblem. UK had it announced months ago and still no release date.
-
Lith's post made me realize not everyone may have seen this:
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/06/06/e3-2012-reggie-discusses-launching-wii-u-retrotl;dr, Retro is still working on their project and not ready to announce anything.
Also, re: Nintendoland, it seems they really do want to make sure owning it is equivalent to owning a Wii U. I'm with Nex in that it is a brilliant move. I'm sure many nintendo fans have considered Nintendo to have as much nostalgic power as Disney, and the latter has theme parks to cater to that. So creating a game that essentially bring together several franchises in a way that exposes them to people who didn't grow up on them, is brilliant. Cross-overs seem to be in the fashion at the moment, and this is a good way of doing it the right way and banking on the universe Nintendo has that others don't.
Well, for now, it seems that Sony has realized this and, starting with Michael, is now trying to create this sense of a Playstation Universe with All-Stars.
edit: Also noting that while the 3DS conference didn't excite me, it still gave me the impression that the 3DS will be my main source of entertainment for the rest of the year. Best handheld I have ever owned.

At the risk of being called yet again a PC elitist… I found this really interesting.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/06/07/pc-gaming-e3s-dirty-little-secret/
Did you know that nearly every multiplatform game demoed at E3 – especially during press conferences – is running on PC? I’ve asked, and so far, I’ve yet to get a “no.” Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Far Cry 3, Metro: Last Light, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, Crysis 3, etc, etc
I noticed a couple but didn't realize this many were like that. Like the article says, it does seem kind of dishonest.
-
So Nintendo's going to lose one of the only interesting games for their new platform? That sucks.
-
I finally went and caught up with this year's E3 trailers and announcements. Now I am looking forward to Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed 3, Dishonored, Rayman 2 and Far Cry 3. It's 2012 and it's still good to be a pc gamer.

I highly doubt Nintendo will be stupid enough to not let you turn off 4 and 5 and I believe he really is overstating how bad it is. 3 seems bad (I mean what he wrote, not the topic he's writing about). But 2 seems all kinds of fucking stupid.
Number 1 I can understand and I'd probably be more agreeable if the entire thing didn't seem like it was written by an angry raging hardcore Nintendo hater

Actually, I found that article to be a bit over-the-edge. John Cheese writes great articles regarding life and growing up and stuff like that, but his stuff on videogames is extremely slanted and overall just lacking in both humor and knowledge. Crap, he's used that video of Han Solo dancing in every article he's written in the past month or so, in one of them he actually talked about it for every single point in the article. In my book, I consider that pretty lazy writing.
Point 5 I'm siding with Nintendo. They're providing a media service and are entitled, in my opinion, to control it to verify that every gamer is in a safe environment. If people like Cheese really want to make dick jokes with friends I'm sure they're able to do it on other things if they so feel inclined, especially since he's making the point that he just wants to play single player games. Also, the empathy comment is correct, in my opinion. How many times do people go on forums or websites to discuss their progress with a game or opinions on a level? I'm sure if I had Miiverse on my 3DS right now I'd probably go and check out what other people are saying about Kid Icarus levels, for example how come in Pandora's level it tells me I haven't found every chest when I feel I have. And that's how a gaming community exists now.
Also, if he really fears the networking aspect of a game, it's not like he HAS to be online to play, say, Mario. The Wii at my place is not connected to the internet and when a game requires updates you just connect it briefly and then remove the feature.Point 4 is annoying, yes, but that's the generation we live in. There's a reason Facebook and Twitter and all that crap is famous, and that's because people like it. People like bragging about stuff they did and saying their opinions however minor and irrelevant they are. Heck, it's why articles have comment sections, and it's also why we are all here writing w.e. comes to our minds. Cheese also made the stupid mistake of thinking he'd be playing Mario and get swamped with messages in the middle of the level, which is a very stupid assumption to make and one he seems to have just made to be pissed off at something. Also, he's from an older generation that's long gone. Go to a high school or a middle school and see if you don't see almost every teenager tweeting or facebooking irrelevant crap constantly through their phones.
Point 3 I found valid in the sense that I also noticed this and fear it. But it's a point that covers games I don't care much about, so meh.
Point 2 is an idiotic point, considering the DS. Basically it's the thought that because "all" gamers are used to a controller configuration, deviating from that and expecting something else will detract from the experience. Frankly, I think that ZombiU is a more realistic and intense experience precisely because of the fact you need to do this crap with the gamepad. You know, in real life you go into a bookbag to retrieve items and the world doesn't stop for you, and that's a mechanic that works fantastically for this game which is about surviving in an as-real-as-possible zombie apocalypse environment. Does it work for other games? Probably not, but it's not like they have to adopt that idea. It's just Cheese taking sh!t out of proportion again.
And point 1, I also find myself disagreeing with him. Not sure about Rayman Legends, but I doubt it is necessary to even use the gamepad in the Mario game. It's more of a thing where you find yourself unable or unwilling to play but, instead of just watching and cringing painfully when your little brother keeps failing and repeating the same level several times, you can just pick up the gamepad and assist the gameplay. It's like complaining that in mario galaxy a player finding himself with the second wiimote will have to, how does it go? "sit with his thumb up his ass while his friend play ~~the actual game with [a] Wii remote", when the presence of the star-shooter assistance is simply there to help unexperienced players and to make watching someone else play the game less of an annoying experience.
Also, I'll criticize NintendoLand for being a pathetically boring excuse of a game to present at E3, but I won't deny myself the fact that it looks fun. And the fact that Cheese considers it to be boring means crap when you know that his idea of an immersive gaming experience is MMORPGs. In other words, this is someone who, by habit, doesn't seem to play multiplayer offline.Again, Cheese is not a bad person, and not a stupid one either most of the time. But his understanding of the gaming community and gaming in general is so piss-poor biased and narrow that I couldn't help but cringe at that article and hope that he really does stop writing about games for a while. I am glad you brought that article up so I can vent about it here and not have to make a cracked account to vent there.~~
-
The scariest things about the comments are people trying to defend/agree with Cheese about the whole ZombiU touch screen thing.
-

I've liked Cheese since the PWoT days, but yeah, agreed on video games (I like Wong's stuff better).
I mainly posted it because these are the complaints we're going to be seeing. As I was trying to emphasize, the only point I really agree with is his top one, which is why I asked the question earlier in this thread about asynchronous gameplay.
Point Two is actually going to be an issue early in the life-cycle when developers try too hard to make the GamePad a "vital" part of the experience. It's like the first Wii games that couldn't just be regular games and implemented waggle at all times. But unlike WiiMotes, the GamePad has some serious potential for nice game mechanics.
And I'll ask the same question I haven't gotten an answer to: for games that do require you to look away from the screen while action continues on the TV, are those games restricted from using the GamePad as its own console while the TV is otherwise occupied? This seems (to me) like a pretty substantial question that hasn't been asked or answered.
-

I feel like that is going to be a feature present in some games but not in others. I don't think it should be a part of ZombiU since a huge aspect of the gameplay is using the tools as the action goes on, unless they have it so that accessing the menu would require the press of a button and would be like current games right now with a screen coming up and covering gameplay. Whether the action would remain constant in this case, though, remains to be seen.
Also, in cases of games appealing to core gamers, they're going to be the ones with the least problem in reserving tv use for playing videogames. Unless they move in with a roommate or a significant other who doesn't play games.
