I think Law was just totally focused on getting back his heart first because otherwise he'd be a one hit kill.
That's why he lost so easily.
Vergo would have been in a whole lot of more trouble if the fight had been fair.

what about the two balloons with the same text in the bottom? isn't something missing?

You said it. Agreed with this 100%. It's getting tiresome, and twice as bad because it was only a few chapters ago that Oda highlighted to us that they have been too careless throughout Punk Hazard and can't go on that way. Luffy hears Zoro and resolves not to lose again. 5 chapters later, what happens? He loses again because he's careless. It's crappy writing. It's like you say, Luffy has become more incompetent than ever to effectively offset for his increase in power. It's the same old carelessness, yes… but it's been taken to a degree where it now overshadows and envelops every other aspect of his character. It isn't fun to see the main character fail over and over because he practically lets the opponent win. It isn't fun to see sheer incompetence get him whooped on repeatedly even when he resolves not to let carelessness do him in.
I hope the people who say it's no different than usual bother trying to understand what the problem is. It's not that Luffy's careless in general, and gets himself into some pretty dumb situations because of it. That's part of his charm. It's the sheer degree to which Oda has been taking it recently where it goes beyond being funny and entertaining and just becomes irritating.
Luffy got taken out by Caesar because of his hax ability to deprive him of oxygen. The second fight Luffy was about to tear Caesar a new one untill Monet appeared.
Luffy was about to get taken out because of Monet's technique, and he improvised a way out. It's just that said way out was a freaking trash dump.
How any of this is crappy writing? How is that jobbing?

I'm telling you now: Oda's doing it for a reason. Once Luffy and crew face Big Mam and crew (maybe even Doflamingo and crew), and face a devastating defeat the first time around, they will 'wake up'. They're still being cocky right now because of their 2-year training sessions, and the complete 'roflstomp' they unleashed during the Fishman Island arc.

please direct me to the panel where luffy loses. Provide 1 example of this "sheer degree" of luffys carelessness thats any different to two years ago.
Jeez, how different were you two years ago?

I can see one interesting thing happening because of the events in this chapter: If Smoker manages to take out Vergo, he'll indirectly help Law get ahold of SAD. So whatever it is, Smoker will be responsible for releasing it in the New World.
-
LOL @ people calling Luffy "cocky". Suuuuuuuuuure.

Luffy was about to get taken out because of Monet's technique
That is the crappy writing. As the guy I quoted pointed out he literally stood there the whole time, letting Monet do whatever she wants, not lifting a finger to stop it, certainly not making any use whatsoever of any of that Haki he spent two years learning which is supposedly helpful against DF abilities, unsurprisingly got caught, and whoops: he's once again about to get knocked out by a weaker character because he was careless. And has to "save" himself in a way that incapacitates him. All this, despite not 10 chapters ago resolving not to lose again because of carelessness, after we had an entire section of the arc effectively devoted to the Straw Hats losing because of carelessness. No, I did not expect him to put on a bloodlusted show like against Crocodile or Lucci. I expected him to do enough not to lose, because that's what he said he would after suffering the consequences of not taking things seriously enough in the New World.

Buggy arc: Luffy gets imprisoned by Nami because he was too naive, and incapacitated for some chapters.
Kuro arc: Luffy falls asleep under Jango's comand.
Arlong arc: Luffy does a "stupid" attack and as a consequence gets thrown to the bottom of the sea by Arlong.
Little Garden: Luffy gets stuck under a mountain by a giant, and then gets constantly fucked over by Miss Goldenweek traps.
Skypiea: Luffy gets swallowed by a snake and then gets a giant golden ball attached to his arm, both times getting him away from the fight.
Foxy arc: Luffy gets constantly cheated by Foxy because of his extreme naivete.
Water Seven: Luffy gets stuck between 2 buildings.
Impel Down: In an incredibly tense race against time to save his brother, he finds the time to fuck around with that Sphinx and starts playing whack-a-mole with Mr. 3 clones . . .
Do I even need to continue? That's Luffy, take it or leave it. In the end, he'll get shit done and that's it. 2 years of training weren't gonna change that.
And I'm starting to wish Oda never introduced Color of Observation. It pops up in literally EVERY discussion about fights or power levels for quite some time now, and it's just getting old. Having CoO doesn't equal being a freaking GOD.
that is true.. thanks for this post sir.. awareness or can see/predict future or super radar doesn't make a person invinsible or can evade and react to everything.

Well, what I liked about this chapter was how is showed how threatening everyone working under Caesar is. Monet didn't lose to Luffy and is moving onto the crew. Vergo has injured Sanji and Law, and the kids continue to be a problem. Earlier I was worried that there weren't enough enemies for the crew to face, and yet it looks like these guys are able to fight off multiple enemies just fine.
Also, Monet has gone from distracting Luffy to drugging kids. She really needs to be stopped, she's keeps showing up where her team needs her the most.
Hehe And thats why I am liking her, a female that has intelligence, power and not so clear motives = best type of villian. So farshe is not "just a pretty lady used for looks only" in the story as some female villians are. She's showing that she is an effective villian. A lot of people still would like her as namaka, but not me. I lik her being a 'good' (as in effective) villian,
@Zp1:
The problem is that the silly and dumb parts of his character have been amplified 10 fold post-ts. Because that's the only way Oda can imagine writing him right now without having him steamroll every threat that comes up.
Luffy has always been this silly and stupid! They have not been amplified at all.
It's his moments of insight and intelligence that are rare.
Remember Arlong Park? That scene of him breaking through the floor to escape Monet sure reminded me of when Luffy slammed his feet into the ground to use an attack (? windmill?) against Arlong….only for his feet to get stuck so Alrong simply ripped up a portion of the ground and threw Luffy into deep water.Oda wants Luffy to be silly, that is why he gave Luffy the powers he did, so the streching limbs would look silly.

Thank you for the summery :)
I agree on the CoO, though I would include all haki has that problem with fans. I got the impression when Rayleigh was explaining Hakit o Luffy that people can train a long time with it and not everyone has same level of haki. Even if Luffy has CoO, it doesn't seem to be active all the time, infact when it seems to active it involves a living opponent(thier attacks, weapons ect), not a inanimate object like a floor. -

Dude, Monet hit him before he could react, Luffy didn't "let" her do anything. That's like complaining to a guy who got punched in the face about getting punched in the face. Monet as of yet isn't a "weaker" character, she's proven to be a threat to Luffy. Luffy's losing and being serious at the same time, take that as you will.
As for falling into the floor, did you think there was a giant inescapable trash room under that room last week? I bet you didn't, and neither did Luffy. It's really the most honest mistake there is.
-
So Monet moved away from Luffy's shoulders; set up her ten-layered snow wall; moved inside it; attacked Luffy, all before Luffy could react? Oh, and spoke to Doflamingo on the phone as well and listened to his whole convo with Vergo.
Not even going to address that further. Even if it was true, it only reinforces the incompetence that Oda inflicts Luffy with. Monet IS weaker and she stated as much herself. Luffy being "unable" to react against her is a complete joke. It's as logical as saying that Zoro didn't take out Hody in the palace pre-underwater because he couldn't move fast enough. No, there is another reason. And we all know what that is.
-
^^
Maybe he was referring to the time when Luffy sat around and allowed her to communicate with CC and DQF a chapter or so ago. He was kinda just sitting in the background. That was a bit odd. -

not really.
first in that same page Luffy ignored what Zoro said.
second, Luffy is not really been defeated after that. he was stalled. and none of whatever happen is because of he was careless. please show me that he was defeated because he was careless. look again when he's fighting Ceasar. he is the same "brilliant" Luffy when he is in a fight. look how much he calculated, he's awareness and he learning and trying to understand Ceasar as his opponent.Third,Ceasar and Monet also are villains in the New World, a place where the most dangerous bad asses and also the final conclusion of this story will happen. for them to go down "just like that" is not a good thing either. Oda must carefully and naturally writing for them as characters on how they must be defeated. not just BECAUSE Luffy must win because of bla bla bla. yes One Piece full of cliches but it always back up with a collective of stories.
-
Coribou's gonna rescue Caribou? Ha.
So Monet is more of a threat than it appears. Attempting to freeze Luffy through close-body contact remains of when Aokiji got him back in Ring Long Island. I suppose she made the snow barrier, talked to Doflamingo, then whupped back to face Luffy.
The arguments for her to join are weakening each chapter, especially the part with the kids. I feel bad for Chopper, not only did he get beat up by superpowered children, he can't move, and just wants them free of the drug candy.
My favorite parts were Vergo battling Law. Even when the latter used Room and Shambles to reclaim his heart, Vergo stomped in, took it back, and just wailed on the guy. He even took Law's electric attack like it was nothing. (
And part of me enjoyed seeing Law beaten up) I'm liking Vergo more and more with each chapter.Excited to see the upcoming Smoker vs. Vergo, the battle I've been waiting for.
…..also, there's some things I want to say:
1. I don't agree with the people complaining Luffy is being "jobbed" and being careless. In almost every arc, Luffy has done something stupid to get himself in a jam. And what happens? He escapes and gets back in the action! C'mon, people.
2. There are some fans that really worried over Law's hat falling off? Sigh......and Oda really needs to explain/outline the powers of Law's fruit. It's already broken enough as it is, but there needs to be some restrictions here and there.Prediction: Momonosuke the small dragon appears and Luffy flies out of the garbage room, a la Pell's ride to the Alabarna Place
-

At the first layer Luffy tought he could easily break it, so he sensed no harm. Then Monet added more and more up to ten layers. He's still confident and says he's stronger than Monet. Then the hug, he could no longer dodge it.
Luffy is careless, but he hasn't been beaten yet.
-
Oh, and spoke to Doflamingo on the phone as well and listened to his whole convo with Vergo.
She didn't listen to that conversation. Doflamingo switched from talking to Vergo to calling Caesar and Monet.
-
Monet set up the layers and then hugged Luffy. She is quick and that's it. Luffy attacked to escape, but didn't know there was something under the floor and fell in it. Don't see a problem here.
-
Looks like speculation to me. And why couldn't he stop the hug? He could have punched her. No, he stood there and took it. There was not even an attempt to dodge, not the tiniest sign that he reacted to it in any way.
second, Luffy is not really been defeated after that. he was stalled.
Monet won. She got what she wanted while Luffy fell somewhere far away. It took a few seconds and Luffy did absolutely nothing to her. Luffy failed, horribly, because he was careless. Few chapters after he resolved that he wouldn't fail due to being careless again, because he already did this arc along with the entire crew. For discussion purposes, Luffy was defeated.
Well, either all that, or Luffy's just incredibly weak. Take your pick, but I know what mine is.
-

Luffy was stunned by the cold, that was made pretty clear to me.
-
Rereading the chapter again, Luffy just didn't have the room to dodge in that Snow Hut. It's just big enough for both Monet and Luffy to fit in to with a little room to spare. All she had to do was close her arms around him and that's that.
-
So Monet moved away from Luffy's shoulders; set up her ten-layered snow wall; moved inside it; attacked Luffy, all before Luffy could react? Oh, and spoke to Doflamingo on the phone as well and listened to his whole convo with Vergo.

in chapter 681, Monet can make that snow-hut like instantly. so, yes.. Luffy can't react. and Luffy's target is Ceasar. so yes… even other normal(not stupid like Luffy) human being will get distracted and delayed when someone or something suddenly get is the way unexpectedly. and there is no where that was established that Monet was slow as hell.. she can be as fast as Luffy at that time. not talking about Luffy max speed.
and from this chapter, from what i can understand, Monet can go through her snow-hut. and Luffy is trapped in that snow-huts. so yeah, it is typical for people to be clueless for a shortime when suddenly get trap in something unknown at unknown place. and then like casper Monet appeared in front of him. so for me everything is normal in that event in this chapter. the only weird thing is Monet talking to Dofla. but it still somehow can be explain that she is talking to Dofla in really short time after she was trapping Luffy inside that snow hut.
i think the problem with you is that you only looking thing from 1 limited point of view. you only see thing from 3rd person perspective. i think you can understand what i am trying to say.

This was used many times. Blueno didn't attack Luffy while he activated Gear 2nd. Jabra didn't attack Sanji while he was spinning to fire his leg, etc. Now post on topic or I am going to block you. :ninja:

Lol, that whole Zoro pep talk about taking the New World serious from now on was basically a gag setup for Luffy to do his UFO move. It wasn't supposed to be Luffy's wake up call to be super serious from now on.

Aokiji –> Ice
Monet --> Snow (Powdered Ice) ?

That is the crappy writing. Luffy let her doing whatever she want? hm… this is stupid. there is no panel in the chapter that suggest that. for all the talking it just for us readers to read. when Kizaru firing his laser toward WhiteBeard and WB said something doesnt mean WB can talk faster than light itself. it just for us readers.. it is a normal things in most of unrealistic manga/comics.
Luffy already done a very good job in this chapter and previous chapters. it jut you who completely neglected it and failed as a reader to see it. and Ceasar and Monet done a very good job for their part too in case you are forgot about that. and i am glad that not some cardboard characters that just serve as a stepping for the protagonist and "FOR DA PLOT!!!".
-
I just checked and… huh, guess that was anime-only. Still though, strange that a bunch of kids hurt her when it was never really a big issue for her.
The fact that she only wants to stop them and not hurt them is a heavy drawback. Otherwise she would go "mil fleur cuatro mano clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch clutch" and that would be pretty much it.
-

I interpreted the Luffy-Monet thing (which can hardly be called a fight) as Luffy not being sure whether Monet is good or bad, or maybe, but that's a very big maybe, he didn't feel the killing intent in her that reveals a true enemy. Knowing Luffy, he would want to save a good person from the clutches of Joker, who would kill her if she doesn't follow his plans. Why I think this is because Luffy didn't put in any effort to punch, kick, or do whatever to Monet at all. Even his stomp on the grounds suggest he didn't want to aim at monet but just wanted to get away from her and after CC. He sees her not as a thread but as a person that is delaying his goal. Another possibility is that Monet knows there is something in the storage room of interest to Luffy. Blocking his path above so he would take the path of least resistance and go downwards. Which is the logical thing to do if you are hurrying things.
-

She won. YES..
and I am sorry that this manga does not fulfill your liking for typical badly executed cliche and bad writing.

A question remains: who "helped" Chopper if not Monet ? The little girl ? Momonosuke ?
And if it was Monet, why ??? -
It's blatantly obvious that Luffy doesnt see her as a threat. Just an obstacle to stall for time. He even commented on how he doesnt think she has a chance against him in a straight up fight.
-

No. just no. The entire arc had been building up to what zoro said, it wasn't just a set up for the gag. The UFO scene was just to add some comic relief it doesn't mean zoro's speech ment nothing
besides UFO he has been taking it seriously, him not doing a 1 hit K.O to monet isn't him being reckless

^this.i dont understand how people think his stupidness is amplified.instead he seems less stupid,as he tries to not do anything in sabondy.have people even read the manga before TS?ITS HIS DAMN CHARACTER.deal with it.even after 50 years,he will be like this, let alone 2 years.
and its fairly obvious coo is only applicable for living things.(its not like a certain other eye-base ability in another series)
and choppers scene was no surprise.it was fairly obvious.so,there is not much change in his character. -
This forum doesn't fail to surprise me. I was expecting stuff like "wow Vergo is stronger than Law!!!!!!1111", but instead a discussion about how Monet was able to delay Luffy?

This post is deleted!

Vergo is just a beast… I hope he won't go down now but will escape with Baby 5 and Buffalo. Damn the guy is awesome and I love his style

Well then you need to find another scene to base your serious argument on. That was a gag setup scene. It was to reveal the UFO move. Oda ended the chapter with that reveal with Zoro saying I just said to be serious and then Ussop laughing his ass off. It wasn't supposed to be a serious scene. It was a gag scene.

Hm, what was the last chapter we saw Franky?

Yeah, fanboying is always running strong here, but I really didn't expect it to be Luffy related, at least not because of this chapter. He acts like he always does, and I interpret it much like Flandrian did. Luffy doesn't randomly attack people, especially if he doesn't know what the fuck is going on. Obviously his instinct didn't tell him that Monet is a threat, and ultimately she wasn't. She left him in the trash room like she already achieved her goal, it wasn't her intention to harm or kill him.

What a fantastic chapter! Monet continues to be my favorite character this arc, and even though I'm not a huge Law fan, I like him a lot better without his hat for some reason.

I can see one interesting thing happening because of the events in this chapter: If Smoker manages to take out Vergo, he'll indirectly help Law get ahold of SAD. So whatever it is, Smoker will be responsible for releasing it in the New World.
This is a good point and sets up some nice character development for him later on down the line, whereas before it had been Tashigi that was getting the brunt of the Marine character development.
I'm off to go read the chapter though I got a slight spoiler from deviantArt about Law's hair…
so hyped right now (that or my sugars are low and making me feel like this I don't know)
