Didn't see a thread for this yet, so here's one of the new Jump series.

It's a cooking manga about a boy who wants to surpass his father. It features over-the-top, often lewd reactions to tasting food. I've got mixed feelings for it so far since I really enjoy cooking manga but the fanservice feels pretty forced and the MC just feels like a generic shounen protagonist. We'll have to see where it goes.

Havent read it in english yet just skimmed trough the raws, but from what i got it's a story about a cook who brings people to orgasm if they eat his meals^^ Could be good. The art is done by tosh who up to this point only done hentai manga as far as I know.

This one looks a lot like Hell's Kitchen but with more fanservice, it has the same elements like elite cooking school and using everyday ingredients and recipes on original ways.

Not bad but Hell's Kitchen seems like a superior work to me.

I like how he intentionally chose something so down to earth, just to piss off the celebbitch.

I guess we'll get to see the tsundere orgasm next chapter.

If I were to helm a food manga, it would be called ARIGATOUNI and be about Italian/Japanese fusion and then after the eighth chapter of poor ratings it would become a battle manga between the Italian faction of spaghetti lassoers and the Japanese faction of mayonnaise cannons

Willing to give this a shot. Seems to have promise, though with the cliffhanger I'm not sure if a romantic subplot is something I'm looking for in a cooking manga.

As for a good cooking manga, Iron Wok Jan. It's a shame more scans aren't up (and I don't have money to buy the physical copies).

even for Jump, this series is reaaaaally fan-servicey. the art is really pro though, and the humor is pretty good (I liked the scene in chapter 2 when some haughty asshole is making a speech in narration text over a background image and at the end it goes HWAAUGH and then on the next page you see the protag has him in a chokehold). probably will be popular. I agree that Hungry Joker is toast.

Yes, Hirano did also some hentai works before Hellsing. But I think they were mostly dojinshis and the like.

This is more about well known and established hentai artists jumping to regular publications.

It's a little different when going from porn straight to a shounen manga.

All the artists mentioned above are seinen manga, which is for grown adults already anyways.
When a former porn artist goes to children's manga field, they often use different alias.
Notice Shokugeki no Soma art is credited to Shun Saeki, and not "tosh".

It seems like a pretty fairly standard practice. There are a few routes in becoming famous, but the two most common ones (at least the ones I have seen) appear to be (1) Being an assistant to another artist (2) Crossing your fingers and writing doujinshi/hentai. Since it is common practice, I don't think these guys are frowned upon (heck, in most cases, I think their art looks better than the former at times).
I am completely blanking out on his name, but the Love Hina/Negima guy got his start from hentai too (as well as produce hentai versions of his original work at the same time).

Azuma was a hentai artist? (looks up on the interwebs). Wow that just blows my mind.

But as far as online reviews and popularity goes, it seems

Including this series, I gave 5 new series in Jump a try (and I'm going to give HQ!! a quick read after this post), and I gotta say, I'm looking forward to the next chapter of Soma more than any of the other new releases this year.

Admittedly, that's my bias because I like the concept of cooking in general. But I'm hoping this sticks around.

And even if it is part of the story's "charm, I wish the fanservice was taken down a lot of notches so I don't feel perverted reading this.

Considering the artist's stronger points/past works, I highly doubt it
Still, it is a pretty decent piece of work so far and the art is fantastic.

Me too. Cooking manga are usually pretty fun.

I actually thought this chapter was a lot better than the first one. More cooking, less fanservice, but it still had a lot of passion. I thought that the perspective of the art was really good on this page too:

yeah chapter 4 was pretty fun, especially how the competitiveness got illustrated. It's gourmet aristocracy.
I really didn't expect it to like it that much because I don't normally don't care for fan service. But in this the fan service has a kind of comedy effect.
It's just funny how over the top the reactions are. Also I should be annoyed how by how erina acts(given how her character is somewhat quite the anime stereotype) but I'm not. Seriously why do I like this again…?

He's challenging the students. He doesn't plan to lose against the bunch that doesn't even show their faces to their costumers. Also he doesn't think of the academy as a stepping stone to cooking stardom (this is the real deal for him) and he declares to take the top place among all of them.

Seems like I did a small misread sorry regarding the stepping stones part, he thinks of the students there as nothing but stepping stones.

Wasn't expecting what happened in Chapter 3 so this series upped a bit more to me. And you gotta love the toned-down TLRD-like orgasmic food reaction right there. I wonder what's gonna happen next for Soma to somehow be accepted in the school (though I'm guessing it the school President has something to do with it based on Aohige's comment on chapter 4).

Yeah…I'd probably love the guy if I had his cooking too. (Wonder if the series has enough guts to go gay guy route? I mean a guy as part of the harem, not Soma as gay. That'd be a first in a shonen harem for me). Just gotta adjust is all.

Luckily Soma is very enjoyable and gives off such a good shonen protagonist vibe.
