New covers even though they're being discussed on the main board, because why not. Hey is this thread likely to be abandoned if the Viz release is slated to become the main one going forward?

Oh, shit, they're finally dropping the New World banner. About time. Though, I still, wish they'd used the logo designs from the Japanese version.
-
NEW WORLD IS DEAD. Hooray!

The day has come!

I wonder if anyone not with the community has just assumed this saga lasted 29 volumes

@Long:

I feel like you're either invested enough in the series to know Viz's saga designations aren't ideal, or you don't really care, because it can't be that surprising for a 90 book series to have a 30 book storyline.
-
I just got my vol. 88 and there's an ad for the English version of Astra Lost in Space. When the heck did that happen lol I wish I'd known earlier.
Now bring over Sket Dance, please.
And back on the subject of saga designations, I'm still bothered New World started with Fishman Island >_>' I'm also surprised they didn't just switch to 4 Emperors once we reached Zou. They probably could've used that for most of the rest of the series.

Poor Robin…........

I can't believe they stopped using New World, finally!

Has the second Colour Walk omnibus been delayed? Amazon still says July, but the Viz website seems to have pushed it back to October. I don't recall seeing any news or discussion about this. Can anyone confirm?

I haven't seen anything official either, but I got an email from Amazon saying my preorder has been indeed delayed and now has an estimated arrival date of October 01, 2019.
-
Same here unfortunately.

It started with the timeskip really. Which is about the cleanest place it could have been done.
Or at least it would be if that had actually been the first chapter of the volume. I bet if that had been an actual clean break they would have restarted the numbering at 1, the same way they did on Dragonball and Naruto. They can't be happy the thing is approaching 100 volumes, theres not good jump on point for new readers anymore.
-
Viz didn't reset the volume count number for Naruto, Robby.

Ah, that's a shame. I was really looking forward to it in a month that's otherwise pretty lacking in physical releases I'm interested in.

I'm not surprised they'd be hesitant to change the numbering, even if they could have made it work by shifting some chapters between volumes like they do get Jojo parts and colour version Dragon Ball arcs starting and ending exactly with the books. One Piece fans are extremely sensitive to changes in the official release on a level that most fanbases just aren't. I can't imagine they're making any choices that could rile up the vocal sect of hardcore fans who make 4kids comparisons lightly. I think if the banners they did use had been thought through properly (not switching from sagas to arcs to however New World could be classified and rounding to the nearest volume instead of always rounding down) they could definitely have served the purpose of a jumping in point, but that ship has definitely sailed.
-
Shippuden stayed as an anime only construct. As it should. Dragon Ball being artificially sliced bothers me to no end, as people are dismissive of the early series because of it. Jojo's slicing up at least lines up with the theme of the series, even if it happened during like part 5 or 6.
I find the annoyance of having multiple volume 1 worse than having over a hundred volumes.

My mistake. I didn't buy them so I didn't pay much attention to the numbers. BUT
They may not have added a subtitle or changed the number, but they DID change the spines from white to black and made it veeeeery clear there was a break point, which was the change I had observed casually..
That's clearly marking the Shippuden split in all but name. And they also sell the big box set containing the first 27.
I suspect the only reason they didn't change the numbering is because it was selling like hotcakes at that point and they had just spent several months doing a speed up release to catch up to the japanese run.
-
And now Amazon has sent me another email stating that the Color Walk is back on for July.
EDIT: And now back to October.

I'm fairly sure Kishimoto himself split the series. If I remember correctly, at the end of the last Pre-Timeskip chapter, there's some text that says "End of Part 1". It's in the German version, so I assume it's also in the original. So it's not completely a Viz thing.
-
Assuming it's not an inaccurate placeholder it's probably an attempt to avoid gaining on the Japanese release since it seems to be slated to only release three volumes in 2019 rather than the usual four.
-
So, I saw they uploaded the cover of volume 92. It's odd. The numbers are always obnoxiously big and they change the title color, but it's otherwise the same cover. For 92, Viz also zoomed in the image and changed the background color from red to purple. I wonder what the purpose was for them making so many changes? I think it looks worse.

Oh wow, I pay close attention to the covers normally but I didn't notice this one had so much of a difference. If they'd done the usual thing of just moving everything up a bit above their line on the bottom and only cutting a bit off the top it would have looked so much better for Robin if nothing else.
Background colour tweaks are fairly common though. I think the reasoning probably has something to do with the spines. A lot of the Japanese covers have backgrounds that gradient into white either at the top or at the bottom, and I don't think Viz likes the way they break up the solid colours along the spine (except for the one or two times they let it through so who knows). They've also had to change it in the past because of the title colour changes. Volume 50 went from black to purple because of the black Sabaody header. This time, I'd point to the spine again. They might have thought the original red was too close to the Wano banner being used there, so they made it darker and purpler for contrast.

In this era of simulpubs … is catching up so bad these days? Kodansha has consistently kept Attack on Titan only 3-4 months behind the japanese release since very early in the series.

I vaguely recall it being said in the somewhere perhaps in the podcast that the delay gives time for redrawing the sound effects, extra proofreading and working with printers, since Viz doesn't print in-house. The extra time for sfx art I get, since full redraws are a lot more work than the way Kodansha handles them, but it's pretty rare for the translation to change enough between the WSJ release and the volumes to be noticable. And even Viz manages to occasionally simulpub big releases like the last volume of the Evangelion manga, so I'm sure they could rekerjig the system to make it work.
Or at least use the extra time to find a printer less likely to missalign the spines, just saying…

The Ace novels are getting an U.S. release.

I'm having such a hard time on the Viz manga site, all I want is to read a series, I'm trying to read Magi, but I can't seem to get to the page that lets me read all the chapters, it just asks me if I want to buy the manga volumes, and that's not what I want, anyone know how I'm supposed to navigate this site, I feel like a complete idiot, soon I'm just gonna cancel my membership

Only Shonen Jump manga and a select few Shueisha manga can be read on the membership backlog.
Magi isn't a part of Jump nor is it owned by Shueisha, meaning it doesn't fall under that criteria. -

Ace's Story, Vol. 2: "Spade Pirates" (September 1st 2020).
https://amazon.com/dp/1974713296
Volume 95 "Oden's Adventure" (December 1st 2020).
-
So our full year of English One Piece books is:
Volume 93 - April
Ace volume 1 - May
Volume 94 - August
Ace volume 2 - September
Volume 95 - December
The slower release pace is going to put us almost exactly a year behind the Japanese release in December. They probably won't have the Law novel ready to do the same thing next year though, I imagine, since it hasn't even had a standalone release in Japan yet.
-
I don't understand why they keep delaying volumes. Kodansha puts out volumes almost simultaneously with their Japanese counterpart. I understand wanting to be able to correct errors, but the bigger things like Laugh Tale and Zoro will only be fixed with a complete re-release anyway.
I understood delaying 93 because there was an extra month in Japan for volume 93. Then we got a 2 month delay for 93. And another month delay for 94. And another month delay for 95. So instead of moving 1 month closer, we moved 3 months back. Which… why?
-
Now that a ninth Color Walk has been announced here's hoping we can get a third hardcover compendium.

I'd assume it has to do with sales and scheduling around having X number of titles released per month and making sure the money flow is all there, plus juggling reprints, more than anything to do specifically with OP's schedule itself. It's probably way more important to Viz to prioritize MHA and OPM right now.
I mean, we're on volume 94. How many readers are actually rushing out to buy the series week 1 or even month 1 at this point?
Same reason they haven't bothered releasing the anime since Fishman Island and stick to just the specials and movies. Sales are sales, and no matter how big OP is in the rest of the world, its just… not a big mover here.

One Piece Ace's Story, Vol. 1: "Formation of the Spade Pirates" cover!!!
-
Low quality front on pic of the cover from the WSJ new volumes section:
-
Ahh, another Nami clone.
-
That guy looks a lot like Saga from movie 5.
-
Does the story get into his narcolepsy? We only ever saw it in Alabasta and on Buggy's ship, and I was wondering if that was actually a thing they ever touch on again.
-
He wakes up in his grave like "??? Where'd everyone go?"
-
So I finished my One Piece collection from Viz. I have all 93 current volunes published. Just bought the first Ace volume. Wanted to know if they were ever going to publish the Law volumes, or if you think they would. I only really collect the canon content so I want all of it I can own preferably in English. However if not I would invest in the Japanese format.
-
So, question: If I were to subscribe to WSJ again, do I get access to the backlock from a computer?
-
You get access to every Shonen Jump series in its entirety.
Not sure about old issues of the magazine though. Actually that brings up a good point. English WSJ digital had the cleanest versions of some colorspreads and front page illustrations. Were those ever archived?
-
I forgot that I asked and continued, I still have all issues that my subscription let me (around when HxH went back from a hiatus to the end, save a month or two between renovations) but I’m reading is series backlog, as it has the volume black and white versions of color pages (buuuu) but the author extra comments (fun).
Having the color material on a series that was never in English shonen jump would be a weird legal void. What id like is for the reader to not be shit. Full screen doesn’t mean “I want to set full screen every time that I go to the next chapter” nor “with the title of the series and the progress bar showing always of course”
Making manga plus reader look good. Heh.
No mouse way to pass the page is bad. Clicking to go to next chapter instead of passing page is bad. I’m ok with the image quality, but it doesn’t feel like the best.
-
Can someone help with this ?
What is the accurate translation for this text ? (From ch499)

Viz is reaaaally dragging out the release of the volumes lately
We went from an 8 month gap with volume 92 (Mar. 2019 in Japan, Nov. 2019 in the US) to a 12 month gap with volume 96 (April 2020 in Japan, April 2021 in the US)
Disappointing

Covid pushed ALL their releases back. There was supposed to be new Maison Ikkoku omnibus out at the end of July and its now releasing in September, for instance.
They also released that Ace novel instead of, rather than in addition to, the normal release, so that pushed it back too.
