Wow. Thanks to everyone here who put up with plugs, supported us and was there for the event, I saw a lot of you in there and active.
Well, the nuclear situation has been stable for some time and it continues to be a serious situation that must be monitored but I think the rest of the world having come of their headline high will be able to report more accurately what's happening.
Take it easy guys!
SWEET!!
Congrats to all involved and all who donated! -
I love this art and the manner of conveying its message. Powerful.

Heh. Crude, but true.

Ahaha, damnit it good to have a laught these days!

posting on some random chat forum doesn't do anything either…....
it was a nice picture.
-
It's mostly a joke.
Yes, it is very powerful to draw an image that both embodies the struggle of Japan and encourages their fight to regain stability.
We just need to remember to donate. Donations will benefit more than art. Sure, draw something truly powerful, and it could even convince many to donate (more even). But know that unless the work is truly powerful, it may be best to donate to the Red Cross.

I didn't like it. Some macho steroid man with a red dot on his tits is not the true face of Japan.

Don't hate on man chest, Taboo. =P

I wouldn't undermine the inspirational quality of creating art; seeing scores of people spend creative time and energy into making something has an emotional effect that knowing someone just clicked a "donate" button doesn't have. No, it doesn't take the place of donating actual money that is needed, hell I am practically broke and I donated anyway, but I think it's nice that these things exist for awareness and posterity.
-
Draw art
Put art for auction.
Put money from auction as donation.
=3
-
I should try to draw something that is able to make people who don't want to donate change their opinion. That's what I would call a powerful message.
However I never draw anything that encourages people to pray. -

Exactly. I've actually been selling prints of my artwork to people to collect money.

I actually thought it was kind of cheesy and weird
Like calling the Japanese survivors SAMURAI what
just makes me picture yukio mishima psychobabbling
Just this antiquated, irrelevant image

Also, I am sure Japanese aren't as assholish as the one in Taboo's image and it will make them feel a bit better to see that people are thinking about them all around the world.

Guys, it's the thought that counts and I think the drawings shown are really great and help to emphasize the strong spirit of Japan.

Alright, no, just no.
Cosmic had a good point about what these things can do.
But drawing a picture on Deviant Art doesn't mean a goddamn thing to anyone in Japan in terms of "feeling better", and they especially do not give a fuck about people making embarrassing cultural references to show their "spirit".

Gosh, if those japanese don't appreciate all the hard work I put into this image, they're being big assholes!!
If your house has been destroyed and your children are missing, you are not going to give a crap about a lot of things
internet pictures are one of them

Wait I missed that, did he actually call that guy an asshole???

I'm sure Japan makes plenty of embarrassing cultural references to Canadians and Americans as well. Even if they don't care about the pictures now, they may stumble upon them in the long term after things have settled down. It's unfair to slam people over ignorant stereotypes when their heart is in the right place. Even if Japan doesn't give a shit what other nations think, it's better in retrospect knowing that there are other nations who have cared for you even if you brush them off instead of other nations not caring for you while you survive. And another thing, I'd like to see how you would react when you do something meaningful for someone only to have them throw it right back in your face because they don't give a fuck about your hard work and thoughtfulness. Would you be happy with that? I don't think you would.

Like I said earlier, calling the Japanese tsunami survivors "samurai" and connecting their "courage" to some bullshit idolized, romantic image that westerners like to jerk off to is
Stupid. Completely disregarding the intentions, just as an image it is a bad image. Like, disregarding the whole "samurai are sooo cool badass japanese people!" thing, when I think of modern Japanese and those kinds of feudal concepts, I just think right wing nationalists. That's me, but I just think of things like the failed Mishima coup/rital suicide. BUSHIDO! What other relevance does it have?
But in general it's just like
Why
Just call them people. The end result feels more like a shallow, life affirming message that's accidentally romanticizing it at the same time
I am probably making a bigger deal out of this than needs be
I should be glad there's a lot of awareness and support, a lot of donations, and good intentions spreading. But after seeing things like imperial flags in GOOD LUCK JAPAN messages and calling nuclear plant workers "kamikaze pilots"… damn.
But putting aside the art thing, I only just now noticed the 30,000 raised
That's... an impressive number honestly. That's great

It sounds to me like the mood of the thread has changed to "pay up and shut up". No?

Wow. Just wow. Sorry to see how people who just wanted their hearts to be in the right place are now being slammed for not supporting Japan based on a specific protocol.

also i thought the picture was gay

Respect your opinion but this is not the thread for stuff like that

This is so stupid I don't even know what to say to this.
It's unfair to slam people over ignorant stereotypes when their heart is in the right place.
It's unfair to treat you like big babies when you're mature enough to know damn well that silly doodles on insular irrelevant communities are only making you and your circle of friends feel good. And you can doodle all day and night.

Cool, now what does this have to do with your drawings. Unless your getting them used like Cosmic suggested.

And what? It's a simple matter of the pot calling the kettle black.
This is so stupid I don't even know what to say to this.
Then start at the beginning and tell me why it's stupid.
It's unfair to treat you like big babies when you're mature enough to know damn well that silly doodles on insular irrelevant communities are only making you and your circle of friends feel good. And you can doodle all day and night.
You're one to talk about maturity, Jerk. And for the record, these "silly doodles" as you call them help me and my friends feel good because it's doing good for others. Try doodling yourself for someone you know sometime and see if it doesn't make you feel good. I'll be amazed if it doesn't.
Cool, now what does this have to do with your drawings. Unless your getting them used like Cosmic suggested.
The drawings are a show of support and to help get others to show their support.
People will draw to show their care.
People will donate to show their care.
Let people show that they care. Is that too much to ask?If it is, then get the saddle off your high horse, Jerk.
a couple thousand people just drowned
Of course it's callous
also i thought the picture was gay
Here's a reality check, Taboo: Not everyone has money to donate to relief efforts. What else do you want them to do? Sit around on their ass and do nothing while shit unfolds on their television? Didn't think so. It's better to do something to show that you care like drawing pictures of support than to sit around doing nothing. As for the picture being gay as you say? Sorry but there is nothing gay about it. You're just being jealous because you don't have the artistic talent that other people have.
-
People can care
But I don't think it's a bad thing at all to say, "well, maybe you should actually think about it from this perspective," in regards to like, calling nuclear plant guys JUST LIKE KAMIKAZE PILOTS (idiocy I've seen elsewhere, not here), or drawing art that includes imperial flag references (ignorant, also elsewhere), or just trying to get a culture they don't belong to and sticking in some cheesy message that embraces it (weird, but an image people here seemed to dig).
I am not a Japanese native, my attachment to this is my family lived in sendai and is homeless and was in a lot of danger, but I myself am not directly involved. so maybe someone else wouldn't find the samurai thing as "blegh" as I do. But I still think it's pretty damn obvious why it's so weird and that pointing it out isn't a bad thing, even if it kind of stomps on good intentions. But just letting it slide? Why?
Are you personally offended, because if so that's pretty selfish
-
@Holy:
People can care
But I don't think it's a bad thing at all to say, "well, maybe you should actually think about it from this perspective."
I'm sure a lot of people are aware of the fact that many in Japan are displaced and need homes, food and shelter. Sure, money will need to come first and then the messages of support can come later. I believe I already mentioned that I've donated $100 to the Red Cross at my city's Japanese cultural center. My co-workers pitched in too. Plus, we are putting up signs and pictures of support to help with the awareness. I'm sure the Japanese do want to get their lives back together but me and my friends are willing to help out financially and artistically in the process too.
If we're talking about perspectives in the fact that "Japan doesn't want our help" right now, I can understand that but I don't want to look like a callous ass either and just sit in front of the TV and PC and just keep watching more shit to unfold. I've been raised with the mindset to help others in times of need.
Are you personally offended, because if so that's pretty selfish
Wouldn't you be offended if someone dissed your work that you put a lot of time and pride into?
-
Well the thing is I wasn't saying STOP ART FOREVER STOP CARING JUST DONATE MONEY AND FUCK OFF
-
Calm down folks.
The gist is, everyone cares, but consider what kind of difference what you're saying or doing will actually make, if it actually helps, or if it just makes you feel good, and prioritize accordingly.
Now get back on topic.
-
@Holy:
Are you personally offended, because if so that's pretty selfish
Not offended just confused because I thought the tone here was reduced to "anything you draw doesn't mean jack shit because it ain't fucking money!" and stuff. And I'm not being ignorant in the fact that money isn't more important right now than art because it is. But, I do think that donation and artistic representation can go well hand in hand. I think some of us here have gotten a little too hot-headed earlier over this matter.
And I'm starting to see how traditional imperalism in art isn't the correct message to convey when it comes to opening up eyes to a disaster. Yes, the art is good but let's use something that actually does represent Japan in a tasteful sense as well as getting people to help donate to the cause.
NOTE: I pretty much made comments about stereotypes being okay as long as the heart was in the right place earlier. I apologize for that.

Agreed, 333.
The current situation looks to be how Japan will bury all its victims as there are not enough funerals to go around.
-
This is the part I really wanted to highlight.
Most of Taylor’s friends and colleagues in the JET Programme (the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme), stayed at their schools overnight after the quake, but not Taylor, said her sister, Julia Anderson.
Courtesy of the Anderson family
Taylor Anderson with her parents, mother Jean and father Andy.
“Taylor helped in the evacuation of the students onto the athletic field, waited for parents to pick up the students and whoever was leftover went to higher ground. Taylor decided to go back to her apartment, but by her bike, and so we know she left her school and that’s the last we know,” Anderson said late last week.“Shortly thereafter, the tsunami warning sirens started to sound," her father, Andy, a 53-year-old real estate developer, said last week. “She probably had 10, 15 minutes of bike riding before the water hit.”
! And no one better jump on me with, 'Ohhhh, so you think American lives take precedence over the Japanese so you're posting a whole article about an American?'
! No, don't even try that shit. Taylor Anderson is one victim of thousands. I'm pointing out her bravery and unfortunate end. If I had the personal stories on anyone else I'd post those too. -

Well that's pretty retarded so I'd hope nobody would say that.

Yeah, lives are lives. Every life there is just as important.
