Dirt Monkey's theory sounds pretty cool, although I'm hoping its something a little less extreme and more worrying for the actual Fishmen, I don't think Shirlee'd be that scared if Humans stopped living at Fishmen Island, although theoretically, her theory might have not been specific enough for her to notice how the Island was actually destroyed.

I know I'm probably thinking about this too much, but it occurred to me that if mermaids/men and fishmen/women can intermarry and crossbreed, if you will, and that those unions can produce any of the four varieties, then why can mermen/maids not eat meat but fishmen/women can? Seems to me it can't just be a cultural thing, since they would be raised by both parents. Seems like it must be a physiological thing–eg mer-bodies cannot process meat, sort of the way an allergy to dairy works in humans.
