It doesn't matter when or where someone joined. If, let's say, Franky becomes the strongest after Luffy (he won't) then i would consider him the First Mate. Luffy considers them all mates, so the strongest one is the first mate.

What if Chopper joined first? What is Usopp joined first? It has been stated by others that he is seen at the right hand of Luffy, he is the second strongest, takes charge when Luffy isn't there or can't act. Think beyond a definition, it doesn't fully apply to this.

Well, they do have Coup de Burst for Sunny. They can enjoy their reunion while traveling near a kilometer in the skies. No annoying marines, probably canon fireworks as farewell light works, makes the reunion much more festive.

It kind of saddens me that members here (new and old) are actually getting worked up with the whole "Zoro being the First Mate" thing.
To make things clear, Zoro was never officially titled the First Mate of the Straw Hat Crew.
In Chapter 499 p.16, Urouge refers to Zoro as the First Mate but this seems to be a scanlation/translation issue as the RAW did not use first mate, it used 副船長, Fuku Senchō, which is generally translated as "second in command"…which technically IS the First Mate anyway...
Whatever the case is he isn't "official".
Now imo, I think it is obvious he is the first mate with or without it being said. Yes you can google "First Mate" and it will give you a job description that really is kinda irrelevant to the OP World because if Oda see's Zoro fit to be the first mate despite him not meeting even half of the "qualifications" listed on www.ICantThinkForMyself.com/search/Real_World_Job_Description_Of_A_First_Mate/ then so be it….and everyone would not have an issue with it anyway.
With all that being said, don't you think Oda realizes this? No she wasn't. The anime is not (and never will) be canon. And that has nothing to do with whether or not someone is first mate. If that's your reasoning then Coby should be first mate. Yup Luffy only trusts Nami. Not Zoro, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Brook, or Franky. Only Nami.

Nah. I don't think Luffy would want to spend time focusing on something like that. It goes against his character. He's never even once thought about who's first mate or who is most important in the crew. Luffy values his crewmates equally.

I can agree that Luffy loves his Nakama all the same but that has NOTHING to do with organization and ranking. Luffy can go on to label Nami as the navigator and Brook as the Musician…Chopper as the Doctor...etc....so what makes you think it is not within his realm of possibility that he would label Zoro as the First Mate.........

I agree with a lot of the post, Zoro is surely the one crewmember that helps and advises Luffy the most on the duties and responsibilities of a captain. So in essence he displays some of the best qualitites you would expect a good first mate to have.
However there is no official first mate on the ship and I doubt there ever will be. Luffy is the captain and boss, after that there is no chain of command however. They are all friends and everyone has an equal role. That is the message that is trying to be put across.
So I agree Zoro is the closest we are going to get sure, but I doubt it's meant to come across that way. Zoro is'nt even the second in command, that was just part of a running joke with Zoro.(If anything it would be Nami with the way she orders everyone around, lol XD)
The crew does not need a pecking order structure IMO. In fact it would work against what the crew is all about.

The crew works well without ranks or positions because each member of the crew knows the strengths and weaknesses of the rest, so they know who will handle what and can therefore concentrate on their own task.
Well, officially Zoro is ALWAYS listed as "swordsman" only, so that's what i consider him to be. Most likely, the First Mate position will remain a fanwank thing forever.
Anyway, i think some of the books did mention Nami as the First Mate once, no? At least i remember people discussing that here, back in the day.
