I really don't know how to tell you this, but there've been hints that this 'long arc' is supposed to be the longest arc of them all. This previous one, the Arrancar arc, from Ulquiorra and Yammy to this last chapter, was all part of one huge arc. The one after the upcoming short is supposed to be the biggest.
Think about that.
What hints exactly? Did Kubo hint at it in an interview or something?

For that matter, what happened to all the souls that Yammy ate during his first appearence. Strange how there was no real world reaction to that.

My guess is that there will be something like a 10,000 year Time Skip and something that Mayuri (now Retired or Missing) created long ago using Data Collected in Hueco Mundo breaks free and absorbs the Spirit King and becomes this really really fat and stupid monster hellbent on the destruction of the Universe.

Honestly , there is nothing realy showing in Soifon's case . Kubo has an openly lesbian girl in Ichigo's class so it's not too far fetched to say he would be a little more concrete :P

Her backstory with Yoruichi is concrete enough for some people. The anime expands on their "relationship" too with more gags and Soifon blushing/shy-fangirling around Yoruichi and such: In the Bount filler there was a scene with Yoruichi coming out of her cat form (thus naked) near Soifon, who had a comedic reaction with possible lesbian undertones. And there was a Valentines omake where Soifon tried to give Yoruichi chocolate. In fact any omake with Soifon where the gag isn't Omaeda seems to play with her feelings for Yoruichi. etc.
I can see there being lesbian undertones there, but it's Kubo so it is just as likely he is just bungling showing admiration on Soifon's part by making it seem like more than that and the anime running wild with it. -
