@Al!naJames:
I don't like the song, it's neither sad, nor dynamic, which is a complete fail to me.
Animation quality in this opening is AMAZING, BUT it's tottaly meaningless.! All of the flashback parts are TOTTALY failed because they cutted Sabo out like he didn't exist there, while he DID. All of what Oda showed before getting to Luffy's flashback was all abscure, and they just failed it by cutting him out mindlessly -_-
It does not fit with the arc. The war arc wasn't sad, it was adventurous and dynamic.
! Luffy feels sad AFTER this arc, not during it -_-
Fail, fail and fail.
The arc becomes sad once Akainu gets his big moment.
It then becomes tear-inducing once Blackbeard shows his true colors.

It was alright. The song's appropriate although I would have preferred something more high-energy rock and less sad ballad. The beginning of the opening made me roll my eyes with the whole title appearing in flames with the two brothers facing away from each other. It got pretty cool in the second half though. Not the worst, but could have been better.
I'm just glad to not have to listen to the previous song ever again. It was getting pretty old.
-
They should have had Meat Loaf do the opening. It'd be 9 minutes long and make you cry.
-
Honestly, what they should have done is put this in as an ending, and made an opening more action packed and exciting to draw people in. However, as One piece hasn't had ending in a while, this definitely deserves to be in just for how fitting it is to Luffy's whole mindset during the arc until the big thing happned (as well as again in the most recent few chapters once Luffy recovers a bit)
-
Opening 13 was great :D
I like the animation and the song -
Now that I've watched the opening a few times and sat on it a while… The art looks great. The animated parts are great, but lacking. And I thought there was a little too much use of still shots and Luffy walking through some fantasy land.
The song lyrics are very good, and the tempo of the song is also good. However, the chorus of the song seems weak. I don't know if it's not strong enough, or not catchy enough, or whatever, but it feels like it's somehow missing something in the refrain. Also, while the lyrics fit, I don't feel like the melody fits the animation as well as it could. A lot of parts of the opening I feel like the song could be way out of sync with the animation and I wouldn't know the difference.
In the end, I'd say this is a good opening, and I like it a lot. Many of the individual parts of the opening are fantastic. I'm slightly disappointed with how those parts fit together, though, which is really what holds this opening back from being one of the very best, in my eyes.
-
I really didn't like it.. Hoped for something a bit more moved, with more energy.. I mean. we are speaking about a big climax here! Hopefully it will last little :O!
-
I also think this should've been an ending theme. I would've preferred a faster-paced, yet sad opening, like "After Dark" from Bleach. "Teardrop" from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX was another one, but I think it was pretty much the same pace as Opening 13.
Got the wrong name in the quote there, buddy. :P
Whoops. I'd like to say it was because I was up late, but while I was up late, I was also wide awake… :pouty:
-
I loved it! I liked the tune, and I think it's somewhat somber tone matched the seriousness of this arc. I also like that it was fairly spoiler-free, aside from a few people's devil-fruit powers.
! I was really worried that it would give away _____'s death.
-
It's a meh.

Well I love the animated scenes and the song is kind of catchy.
In general it is a good opening. But I thought - regarding on the upcoming story - it would be a bit more rock-music like.
Don't get me wrong, I think it is a very entertaining song but it lacks somehow of the energy I wished to see/hear.
-
Toei is stil thinking that most of it's audience are little kids .
Because keyhole sure is gonna be sued by kids too young to know how to read :ninja:
-
Btw, just noticied that Akainu's tatto is kinda colored on the opening. Not important, but well, there's.
!
-
It wasn't a bad song per say, however it lacked the same energy that the previous openings had. There just wasn't that much going on at all compared to the other openings for this series. Had this been any other series, I think the opening would have been appropriate. However since this is One Piece it just fell flat on it's face. Oh well, I'm sure I'll grow to like it eventually.
-

This. Very weak connection between the music and the visuals, and "not catchy enough" is an understatement.
Btw, just noticied that Akainu's tatto is kinda colored on the opening.
It's odd… Oda revealed his color scheme for the tattoo on the cover of volume 58 last month, but in his version the curvy line parts (as opposed to the flowers) are black, not blue. You'd think they could've taken notice and implemented such a change within 6 weeks time, even if the opening animation had already been completed at the time.
-
@CCC:
Yup. We've had those tattoo colors since the cover of volume 58 last month. Lines are blue and the flowers are pink…
Oh, I didn't see that cover so I think it's my fault , well there's always something new to learn here.
-
Note my edit (I went and checked the cover before editing) ^
Turns out the anime really did do it differently. Thanks for pointing it out! -
shit..
well .. its certainly better that the last opening to me..
but they got lazy .. i mean, the upcoming war had sooo muchhh potential to make a really good, dynamic, and epic opening, i dont know… some scene of people fighting in the war.., .. i mean, the op could be done in the middle of the battlefield with the people fighting and shit.. i dont know..
but .. some still shots of the characters staring at the screen, showing his abilities.. and the song.. and luffy walking in the middle of the antartida?, i dont know man... very lazy to me...
and the mugiwara part? those individual scenes with each mugiwara doing something, it was SO HARD to show a scene of each mugiwara in they respective whereabouts?
still a very good opening.. loved the art and the animation... but it could have been so much better..
-
Moria deserved a lot more opening time.
-
Just noticed that after it bursts into flames the One Piece logo very briefly looks like the flame logo from Vol. 57. Neat touch. Sanji needs to wear a white suit in the series itself, badly. Seeing Ivankov's bit makes me miss Norio Imamura already T_T. Nobody else will be able to yell out ''Death Wink!'' quite like him.
And Tsuru's uh, pretty tall for an old woman.
-
Repeated viewings are not improving my opinion of this opening so my final word on this is that it is only slightly better than the last opening, which means it still sucks pretty bad. From now on I'll know better than to get my hopes up.
-
I thought this opening was really cool
But I also think it's something that I'll prolly get sick of in about a week :/Though I'd still like to ask if there's been a single announced for this song yet?
-
They formed JUST to play this opening so…
that's definitely an exaggeration/misunderstanding. it's actually that when they formed, one of their goals as a band, from the beginning, was to do a one piece opening, since they all grew up loving the series.
subbed version:

I give it a resounding 'meh'. The visuals were pretty cool, if not a bit typical. The song wasn't as aggressively annoying as Share the World or aggressively kiddie as Kaze wo Sagashite. Instead it was just… boring. I think I may try recutting the video to fit with a different song to see what happens.
Edit: After a second look, I think what really gets me is the complete lack of creative editing. The bulk of the opening is just two-beat clips playing in succession. Of course, that beat goes through most of the song so there really isn't much to work with. There's one beat change from 1:32-1:56, but the only clever thing done is matching Luffy's footsteps to the increased tempo for the few seconds there aren't out-of-place chibi-Luffy/Ace scenes.
The video really doesn't interact with the audio very much beyond that.
Kaze wo Shagashite may not be anybody's favorite, but actually put a lot of effort at playing off the synergy between audio and video, which is about the only reason it's as tolerable as it is.
-
For those who want more information about the song itself, the vocalist/giutarist (Shin Nohata) wrote "One Day" and the guitarist (Haruhisa Duran Naito) composed it. No arranger was listed.
My personal opinion on the song is that it's honestly one of the more fitting songs the series has ever had and it definitly shows the effort that was put into it. It also has a natural sound which I really enjoy and quite frankly miss in songs these days. In a world full of mainstream pop and rap, something like this really stands out (especially among the last 3 openings). It's not the greatest song composed but its easily one of the better written ones of this era and I actually plan to buy the single if one is ever released (Nothing has shown up on their website or CDJapan, so I don't think a single has been announced yet).

Luffy walking through some fantasy land..

Isn't Marinford's ruins where Luffy is walking ?

The song is okay, but the fact that the band were fans of One Piece and dreamed of making an opening for One Piece is pretty kick ass. Really adds to the song.
But the Luffy and Ace bits of the song/opening…

not everyone wants to struggle with a potential laggy stream of an episode when all they want to see is the opening with subtitles, anyway, either.

except kaze wo shagashite isn't the least bit tolerable.

So - thanks for sharing! -
OP 12 never happened…. right?
Isn't this opening 12? :ninja: Oh I guess I'm in the wrong thread.
But everything was all right for me on the Opening 12, until the "HEY" thing happened. -
My respons to the new opening is: THIS WILL BE EPIC!
the lyrics really fits this arc!hah! when i heard there would be a new opening (i think it was the day before the opening actually was out) i searched for the song, but couldn't find it anywhere. The next day i searched for the song again and it was EVERYWHERE!
internet is sometimes scary… -
Wow, 17 pages while I was sleeping and being an idiot that forgot about the big premiere of the new opening.
This song epically kicked ass. Those who hate it just can't accept its awesomeness in one day.
I had the impression that it was nice but slow the first time I watched it, and by the time I watched it another two times, I loved it.
You can tell how much effort the band put into the song just by reading the lyrics and listening to how much tone the singer puts into his voice. It almost sounds like he's trying to connect to how the marinefold arc should be expressed in terms of Luffy's position in the whole thing. As someone else mentioned, there was this nice undertone to it that made sad, but still too happy and almost Luffy-like to be qualified as a Bleach or Naruto opening.
The animations were alright if not a bit repetitive. The last thirty seconds of it definetly sparked some emotions, and a One Piece opening (or any opening for that matter) being able to do that to the audience without the "ZOMG-emo SASUKE!!1! Poor Narutoz!" automatically makes it leagues better than 'mediocre'. The parts with the crew doing their own thing were nice as well.
Although I love the flame animation for the logo, the only part of the opening I actually openly disliked was the cliche pose of Luffy and Ace facing away from each other while it was on. I've had enough of those from previous openings.
Aside from the slightly slow pacing and chorus, this may be the first opening I wouldn't mind watching all the way through at the beginning of each episode since the whole 2 and a half minutes thing started. 9.2/10

@Monkey:
Isn't Marinford's ruins where Luffy is walking ?
Perhaps? I don't know why he'd be slowly walking through an empty, broken Marineford, though. The fact that there's nobody there is what really gets me.

The problem with the opening is the tune/chorus. It's extremely boring. And the fact that so many people on this message board alone agree that it's boring proves that it's a big problem. There's no reason for one of the most popular animes of all time to have a boring theme song. One Piece rakes in more than enough money and has more than enough talented music directors who can recognize what's good to deserve a fantastic, memorable theme song.
Even if you thought some of the former openings were too upbeat or weren't fitting, you can't deny that they were all more memorable than this one. There were fans who loved them and fans who hated them, but at least they were songs that were good enough to get such big responses. This newest opening doesn't even give people the chance to love it (and to be clear, I'm not saying this new song had to be cheery and upbeat in order to be good. Sad choruses can also be very interesting and catchy if they're good enough).
Honestly, is there anyone here who actually loves this new opening song - I don't mean the animation or the lyrics, I mean the tune/chorus itself?

Look two posts above you.
This may be hard to accept, but songs with boring chorus tunes are released much more often than those with even a bit of anything catchy. Out of all those existing songs, I'd say that "One Day" has a pretty decent chorus but obviously not the best out there.
-
I do .
-
I don't understand why people are even defending this song for its fitting lyrics. Let's not kid ourselves, it's the same recycled anime song bullshit that can apply to almost any situation. It wasn't even worded in a particularly poetic way or sung with any unique flair. It's amazingly bland.

His main emphasis was on the lyrics. I'm specifically talking about the chorus.

Sad songs aren't supposed to get your heart pumping in exciting. They're supposed to make you uncomfortable and reflective, something which I bet you didn't attempt to do.
Ulrilra, we all know you just wanted a faggy super happy opening like Brand New World despite how much better this Opening is for this arc. You're not fooling anyone.
I like how you edited in this line as an afterthought
(and to be clear, I'm not saying this new song had to be cheery and upbeat in order to be good. Sad choruses can also be very interesting and catchy if they're good enough).
How about you put up or shut up and link a good sad song then?

Actually, I was talking about both.

The dudes who made this song wrote it and revised it with One Piece in mind. One of their goals when their band formed was to do an opening for One Piece. The lyrics are quite a bit more Luffy-ish without being excessively romantic or blabbering on.
