Hey, I know that this may not be something that I should ask of others but I really don't know what to think. I have watched the One Piece anime since it started airing in America first with the 4kids version and then with the FUNimation version. I loved both of them just because of how adventurous and bright the show was, though until the FUNimation version came along I didn't know there was anything wrong with 4kid's adaption of the show. However with time I did and now I purchase the FUNimation DVDs, and I absolutely love the show. I have also seen all of the Simulcast episodes but not read the manga or watched any other version of the show. One of the problems I have been having though has come from checking this board everyday for a few years now, which are (besides spoilers) the complaints about the very things I would not notice, and most recently the newest opening. Greg brought up to point that due to the complaining of the fans to Toei the opening is being changed which is just a head for all of my thoughts of whether or not there is some type of progressive reason to be critical of One Piece and all type of entertainment in general. Because as it is if I had never heard any other person's input on these things I have seen, I would have missed many flaws in this show which I enjoy. So the point I am trying to bring across is, how should I judge the things I see, because when things are pointed out by other people, here and other places, the things they state seem very true and convincing. So all I am trying to figure out is… I don't know. I know that I have to decide things for myself and I have to say that for things like One Piece and shows in general I like pretty much everything for what it is, but as other look at them and see the strands which make up the thing for what it is it just seems less magical in a place where it seems magic should survive. And so all I am trying to figure out is whether I should be satisfied with what is being given to me, because I will love it for its adventure, or will my single voice and mind be something moving enough for me to dis-spell the wonder from the things I see to... to I don't know. So anyway, I'm sorry this is such a long text which will probably not receive a true answer. But I just felt like I had to ask others. So anyway thanks for any input, and I apologize if I don't really portray my thoughts well, but that may be because I'm not quite sure what I need to say.
-
The answer is yes, One Piece is magical, and it's glorious!
-
It's okay, you don't have to apologize.
I don't want to tell you how you should think or feel on this…I find it a rude thing to do, in most cases. So I suppose I'll try and help you, in whatever other way I can.
First of all, I do recommend reading the manga. I think you'll be able to get a bit more substance out of the series if you do.
In my opinion, all the complaints about the opening are ridiculous, and it should not stop anyone from enjoying the show. Nor should another person's opinion--especially not someone you have never met in real life--keep you from enjoying something. Say I tell you I don't like the current opening, but you like it. Who gives a damn? It's reasonably absurd--childish, even--to dislike something just because someone else does.
Do you mean the flaws that are being pointed out to you make you like the show less? True, One Piece is not perfect, I won't pretend that it is....several people are on this forum to point out the flaws and discuss how the series could have been better. Most people here enjoy debating this. If you don't...well, you could choose not to take part in those conversations, our perhaps you could open your mind to how One Piece might be different (not calling you closed-minded, it's just a phrase). Could you give me a more specific example other than the opening dilemma?
I understand that magical feeling; alot of users here do, too. It's in my belief that one can't truly enjoy something they feel they can't be critical of...but it's different for everyone.
Hope this helped you, and I hope I can help you with any other questions you have. :) -
Yeah actually, thank you for your input so far, it really does help. And other examples are how people have been commenting on how the recent Impel Down arc in the anime was terribly done though I found it really endearing, but it feels less like it when the flaws are pointed out. I understand that it is not a perfect series by any means, but I do want to enjoy it. And I know I'm kinda just rambling at this point, but also when episode 504 came out I believe, when the straw hats were separated, I thought it was incredibly well written and thematic as well as one of the best moments of the show, however I remember a specific comment by Ivotas and other members I think, of how it was pulled off badly, it just kinda seemed like a stark contrast to what I had thought. And I guess I just don't know what is right or wrong to think. Sorry for talking about you specifically Ivotas, your comment was just the one that stuck out to me.

Wait so you liked Buggy and Mr. 3 poop jokes ?
And the Tate episode ?

Yes. Because YOU have said you are satisfied. It's okay to have standards, the problem simply lies in how
you express them. It's perfectly fine to criticise, but if you start insulting, cursing, etc, then you're in the wrong. -
You're welcome, it's no problem. I'm glad it helps.
…I can't help you much there specifically, since I haven't watched much of the anime since Water 7. The thing is, people are sort of bound to complain...One Piece is a series that's very much cared about, and people get riled up when they feel it's belittled or diminished (though I would dearly love to see this people try to do it any better than Toei). Some people just like to complain and know that doing so on the Internet will most likely not come back to bite them. Therefore, that is something one simply can't prevent from happening. However, I can see how you would feel less for the arc when you discovered what was wrong with it--probably more so if you didn't see it for yourself--but how to avoid or embrace this is entirely up to you. If you want to forget all about it, that's okay; there's plenty of other threads on this site, and you can, of course, create your own if you want. If you want to join the fray, I welcome you, and I'd like to let you know that there are other users, including myself, that feel the anime is fine and dandy the way it is, as you do.
I have see episode 504 and I thought it was wonderful (I cried a bit, you see). I care not for Ivotas' opinion; I enjoyed it, and if he didn't, he's unsatisfied and I am not(sorry, Ivotas, this doesn't make you a worse person in my eyes). If it makes you feel better, got debate with these people and give them all your reasons for thinking that the episode was fine. Not many of them have more experience in animating than you do; assume that you an they are equals until they prove otherwise. Ivotas might have status here, but his word is not law (sorry, again). Neither is anyone elses.
No one else can decide what is right or wrong for you. Okay, so it can be verified, by a professional animator, which there are few of here, that, say, episode 322 had 2 minutes of sloppy animation (I made that up). That doesn't mean you should feel you have to think less of something just because someone else said so. Fight it, if you want to! Fight it! Win! Be stubborn. It's good sometimes. -
So the point I am trying to bring across is, how should I judge the things I see, because when things are pointed out by other people, here and other places, the things they state seem very true and convincing.
Short and obvious answer: don't let anyone make up your mind for you.
No opinion is worth more than your own or any other. -
I know, it's just I feel as if I might be wrong about something when these types of discussions start. And I just want to better myself if that sounds pretentious enough. But thanks for the reinforcement.
-
Judge it how you want to. I read this forum as well and take into account some of the things some people are critical about, but I never really notice and just enjoy the show as normal. I just find reading peoples complaints and comments about the show just interesting to read, in no way do they influence how I feel or look at the show myself. It shouldn't influence you unless you are the critical type. Watch it how you want to.
-
I could make a usual me comment of how no one should have liked the 4kids dub regardless.
But I'm going to offer a rare positive compliment, if you're looking back and seeing what you didn't before I'd say your taste is simply maturing.
-

Facts can be wrong. Opinions can never be.
Bettering yourself is good, but I don't recommend you doing so by following the example of people you talk to online. Follow Luffy's example! Be strong! Fight for your friends! Go on amazing adventures! Never back down! Eat strange mushrooms you see growing on the ground!
…Okay, don't do that, but I'm sure you see my point. Take that magical feeling you get from One Piece and apply it. Chances are, things will turn out for the better. -
I watched Ocean DBZ and thought it was the bee's knees.
Then I learned I was seeing a lie.
Then I turned into a stark-raving mad depraved dingo for 5 years.
Then I realized it doesn't matter.
Skip the 5 years of insanity and just like what you like for no reason other than 'because'.
Unless what you like is Naruto.
Then it's time for the paddy wagon.
-
Enjoy what you like while it's still there.
Everyone will be critics, but it's your choice what you watch and like.
I don't want to shove my opinion down your throat, but if you want it, I'd say you've stuck yourself with a good series. It won't disappoint you.
-
I watched Ocean DBZ and thought it was the bee's knees.
I love that dub, whether it's a horrible butchering of the original or not. I grew up watching it and loving it, and
it got me into DBZ, and sometimes, when you realise you can look past them, all the little faults really don't matter. :) :) -
I still love the voices and some of the lines.
However, the edits just became so blatantly ridiculous during the big battle that I realized something was up before I even knew something was up.
-
I liked alot of small things about the Ocean dub.
It was more like a gentle well meaning retard, whereas Funi's dub was an arrogant spiteful mongoloid.
-
That analogy is awesome enough to be sigged.

Yeah, it did have some great points through it. Personally, I thought Brian Drummond's Vegeta and Scott McNeil's Piccolo worked better, but that's just imho.
-
Hey man, don't fret it much. Try not to let the more hardcore fans make you feel anymore or less satisfied with things you like about One Piece whether it's an opening, an arc, an episode, a chapter or a character. I went a little nuts the first time I exposed myself to this fanbase because I thought most fans had serious issues. Well, I still do but I could live with it.
That's not saying I don't rant as well… The anime in particular makes me say stuff.
-
Scott's Piccolo is the only Piccolo.
Period.
-
The hilarity is that Ocean made far far worse censorship and alterations, but Funi was far worse mostly through pure utter incompetence at basic aesthetics.
-
To this day I still don't understand why they left the HFIL episode in, where they had to digitally paint over those shirts in pretty much every shot of the episode…. when there were entire other episodes that were cut that would have been easier to leave in.
If you're going to randomly cut eps, why not cut the one with shit-tons of
censorshipediting work involved? -

It's however you look at, manga wise and anhime wise, i'd say yes but hey i can't speak for you
-
Alright well sweet, I know that I probably knew all of these things all along, but it is really nice to hear other people say them too. So anyway thank you for this, I just felt I had to explain myself to people I didn't know and see if I could find some truth. So anyway thanks, I still am afraid to watch Naruto Shippuden though from all of the bad I've heard about it, because I really did like the first series. But oh well, I guess that is probably a dilemma for a different time.
-
We're here for you, man.
-
I feel the love. Even if this did momentarily turn in to an off topic thread about Dragonball Z, Scott McNeil, and editing. Though now I do have support. And besides this entire thread was just me talking about my feelings anyway, so it seems like a pretty natural progression.
-
Naruto Part 1 is good, that's normal to think.
Naruto Part 2/Shippuden is horrendous, don't bother.
-
I'll get straight to the point. I've started watching the One Piece Anime and I've just watched the last episode of the Arabasta arc. I'm aware that the next few arcs are fillers and I wanted to ask this informed community whether they are the type of fillers that are at all worth watching. And while we're at it, what other later fillers are terrible/good, for future reference?
I'm just asking because I nearly died trying to watch some naruto fillers back in the day :ninja: lol
-
No they are not.
http://arlongpark.net/Anime/Episodes
Only ones worth watching are G8, Ocean memories & Ice hunters.
Even then G8 is the only one that's decent all the way through.
-
Just watch the G-8 arc, it's awesome
Oh and maybe the Oceans Dream one if you can be bothered, it's got some decent moments. -
I've started watching One Piece and i am currently on episode 10, i've heard it's a great Anime but something i'm concerned about is the light hearted feel of the show, does it become more serious at any point along the way? Are there character conflicts, development, etc? All i've seen so far is a rubber kid that, besides his relationship with that red headed pirate, has absolutely no conflicts with himself and is set in what he wants with no other qualms in the world. I don't know if this will hold my attention. Take Naruto, for example, he has the internal conflict with the demon and society shunning him and it makes for great character development and story telling. I ramble some, so in essence i'm asking if the show eventually takes routes that have darker stories and actual character development and and realism and such.
Thanks,
Ruran -
The answer to all of those questions is: yes.
But if you think Naruto has great story telling, then eh, yeah.
-
No they are not.

Ocean Memories was terrible. G8, Ice Hunters and Spa Island are the only ones I thought were worth watching.
-
Personally the only filler I enjoyed was
Usopp vs Daddy the Father
Select few of the Single stories. Robin/Chopper, Usopp and Nami's were pretty good if I recall. Don't even Remember Zoro or Sanji's. I think Zoro's had Johnny and Yosaku as punks tho?
G8 had some good moments
Chopperman short aswell as the Olde Japan ones.
The Mugiwara Cover stories. -
@Tijnn.:
Ocean Memories was terrible. G8, Ice Hunters and Spa Island are the only ones I thought were worth watching.
Spa island was a mess.
Ocean has the usopp fight narration, which is the sole reason for recommending it.

I actually liked Spa Island. I mean, the animation and art was pretty good despite how short it was. Plus, I loved Brook's Bruce Lee outfit in it. And yeah, I'm a sucker for Foxy 'cause I find him hilarious. Oh…and the fanservice was nice too.
As for Ocean Memories, yeah, it was pretty good, a little tedious, but good. The moment that made me laugh though, was the part where Sanji tells Zoro to stop looking so foreboding and crack a smile and forces Zoro's face into a smile by pulling on his face.
-
If you think Naruto has a great story, then One Piece is The God of Story telling!
-
Character development and one piece go together like peanut butter and jelly every little character has something speacial about them
-
Every character in One Piece is unique with unique problems. They're all developed incredibly throughout the series and you'll grow to care about all of them equally.
-
Well, i was not as much saying that Naruto has great storytelling (bad choice of words on my part) as much as that the character has aspects which allow them to explore the darker part of him - being a rubber man did not really seem to open up that sort of avenue. It's great to hear that character development is strong, does the art style also evolve some over the course of the show? Because the beginning episodes seem.. well.. dated, but that's to be expected from episodes made in 1999 i imagine.
-
Conflict plays a huge part in OP. Just read through the Arlong Arc and you'll see .
-
Yeah, the art improves a lot. It's a bit weird sometimes, but you'll learn to live with it.
-
The art design does change slightly, as all the woman look more like a timeglass and also have more detail in the "chest region" ¬¬
But the art style you will learn to love and their are many flash backs for characters that will definately make you cry and feel for the characters -
I wouldn't really call Naruto dark. At all.
More like Glossy!Black.
-

Well the most recent parts with Pain and such i think are pretty dark, but i also have not seen many anime so i don't really have much to compare it to. So far the answers are curbing my worries, though i have to ask what the hell is up with Ussop's (sp) nose?
-
He's supposed to remind you of Pinocchio. You know, because he lies.

Last words.
