Alright, I think it's a rather rash decision, but whatever.

Well, I think he deserved it. The man is doing his job. America should be proud of him.
I'm proud I guess, but he hasn't really done too much. He hasn't even served a quarter of his term… Supposively he got the award for boosting the morale of the country. I support Obama and whatnot, but I dunno about this decision...
Seems rather odd.
I mean, if he succeeds with this nuclear disarmament stuff it's all to the good, but this seems incredibly presumptuous of how this is going to pan out. It's not like these initiatives haven't stalled before.
Poor Obama. He can NEVER do enough for everyone to be satisfied. I was a little caught off guard when I heard about this, but..you know, he DOES deserve it. Especially with all the shit he's had to clean up and put up with, I think the man deserves a great big pat on the back for trying to make our country better for us.

I usually always defend Obama; However, this decision is, as Darkstorm said, "rather odd." So you think if someone only TRIES to make the country better, they deserve to get a fucking Nobel Peace Prize? I can think of quite a few horrible presidents who fit that criteria.
He's just starting, anyways.
This is just a publicity stunt to make Obama and America look better in general if you ask me. I have the sneaking suspicion that the Nobel committee made some sort of under the table deal with the White House. Call me paranoid but I don't see how Obama deserves one, he hasn't done anything yet.
I like Obama, but this was kind of random.. I guess they were afraid Kanye would show up if they gave it to Irena Sendler.
Yeah it's too soon for him to get the prize. What did they think when they made the decision? The jury is really weird… Maybe they've lost contact with reality...
Yesterday I saw a news story about Obama playing basketball.
Has he done anything worthy of a Nobel Peace prize yet? Aside from playing basketball, I mean.

A pat on the head, not eternal gratification.
I can't honestly say I can speak of more than two or three things he's done to make much of a difference at all, and those were all political things rather than real change from the bottom up. He's TRYING to do a lot of good, but he hasn't been very successful. This award is way premature. I don't think anyone here can even name a single achievement worthy of this award that Obama's done in his life, except for being a symbol of the downfall of racial inequality in America (a symbol that hasn't done much notable good yet).
Yeah, it's a bit rushed. I want to see non-internal things first.

This sentence makes me think more and more that Obama's nothing but a figurehead:/
Also, I just checked and there were far more deserving nominees.
Well, Brits seem to think it's a joke:

There are also others questioning what he's done to deserve it:

Seems like a bitchin' deal to me though.
Lose your campaign for the Olympics, get a NPP? Where do I sign?
Whoah - So Obama's Won a Nobel Prize ??
Am I the only person who is excited about this ?
Somone winning a Nobel Prize is like the highest of high.
You all talk about it as if it's part of your daily rouitne …

The fact that he won a Nobel Prize at all pretty much diminishes the prestige of the award.

Wow, great articles, totally explains things.
Well Carter won a Nobel Peace Prize, and he wasn't the best President out there. But then again his wasn't given for his Presidency.
I don't know, I'm a Obama supporter, and I think this is a dumb action. Shows the world likes him more than what he does.
I'm going to wait 3 years before I comment.
Really not worth dealing with presumptives and "what might be"
I'm going to wait 3 years before I comment.

That would be the best decision.
Seriously? Wow…well...that's really something. Not totally sure if he deserves it since he really hasn't done much yet (aside from his awesome campaign) But then again, probably the reason he hasn't gotten much accomplished is because the Republicans have been fighting him tooth and nail every step of the way.
Oh well, deserved or not, good for him.
I think i'm with Airflow on this one.
My judgement is on hiatus until a few years have passed

For what? The friggin' NWO?
You've been making a lot of unspeakably bad posts lately.

Anyway my views are that despite Obama doing well so far, its too soon for this.
A figurehead of racial equality, "New America" and general hope. I'd rather he be presented the award for something he's actually done not what he stands for. Anyone can stand for something noble.
lately?

Didn't like that illiterate jibe, huh?
I'm gonna go to North Korea and try and get them to give up their nuclear weapons. I hope I get a NPP for it .
I like Obama and all, and like what he's been trying to do, but… he hasn't even been in office for a year yet.
They kind of jumped the gun with this one. :/
Goddamn the whole world is so Obama-crazy. Well whatever it'll probably make him feel better about the Olympic thing.
I didn't step on an ant today, where's my NPP?
Obama's done nothing to deserve the prize. During his presidency so far, I've only seen him going back on promises and caving in to republican pressures, with a few rather minor accomplishments on the side, a stimulus bill that we can't measure the impact of yet and the relocation of a war to the place it was meant to be all along that probably won't last long enough to have a positive effect since we've already drained so many resources on the former one.
All we have to evaluate is a man who's tried, so far failed, and might succeed in efforts that are either to young to evaluate or haven't been attempted yet. Not really a candidate for an anything prize. All I can hope, though, is that this boosts his ego enough to give him a spine and actually stand up against the republicans that attack him purely because he's a democrat.
It's just a prize. This topic would be swept under the rug in 2 months. Just wait.
well, i hope he will take this as a motivation to fulfill his promises, so that he lives up to his reputation.
I would like to see who that was nominated has done more than him in an effort to promote world peace. I see alot of people going, well what has he done, which is stupid to ask. You can to BBC everyday and see him at a different conference or a different meeting trying to do something. He's definitely made the country look better internationally, by comparison to our former leader at least. The guy has been doing work in almost every continent this year trying to build bridges. Anyone who looks at this and says flat out "he hasn't done anything" is someone who hasn't been following real news.
That being said without knowing much about the other nominees i can't say he deserves it the most but i do think its obvious where the decision was coming from. If it's a stunt i don't know what purpose it serves, it seems to have made people more skeptical if anything. Good for him though, i hope he lives up to it…
The reason he won it was because he's not Bush, really.
Obama's effort to use diplomacy and cooperation is a stark difference between the previous administration's lone cowboy use preemptive strikes and war. Also, another reason for the award was to enhance Obama's diplomatic efforts.
Obama has a lot to do to fulfill his campaign promises but just by being elected as President, US has become #1 in most countries admired.

It's not that I don't like Obama (to be honest, he's just another politician in my eyes), but he hasn't done anything. Anyone can say they are going to do something, and a lot of people do just do that. The award should go to people actually do stuff.
but just by being elected as President, US has become #1 in most countries admired.
And at the end of the day, that's all that really matters isn't it?
Really suprising. Like Stephen Curry winning MVP.
But seriously, I support Obama, but like everyone said, he hasn't done anything major to warrant this, but hey, good for him.
Well, last year's winner was a President too. A former one. But this one is… okey. I kinda get it. Global political atmosphere has improved since Obama was elected and stuff. Still, yeah, while it didn't come totally out of nowhere it's a somewhat interesting choice.

You all do know that Russian-American relations are better than they've been in decades, right, despite the fact that they were in a horrible place after the Georgian incident last year? Historic negotiations with Iran? We cancelled plans to build a missile shield that many Polish didn't want in their country? American approval ratings are up worldwide? That Obama has been working towards nuclear disarmament since well before he became President? The fact that an American President is actually liked and respected in other countries again?
The idea that he hasn't done anything to deserve such an award is laughable and is largely buying into conservative propaganda against him.
The fact that an American President is actually liked and respected in other countries again?
This
is
what
matters.
That's not the only reason though it's a pretty amazing accomplishment in and of itself.
On another note, that Times article you linked appears to have been written by somebody who… let's say, doesn't like Russia very much. So it's not surprising that he'd basically parrot the same talking points that total idiots like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck are making in this country.
That's not the only reason though it's a pretty amazing accomplishment in and of itself.
You don't need to tell me!
More than many of the American posters here, I personally know the pain of living abroad while FUCKING BUSH was President.
Those cold stares. Whispers behind my back,
"Psh psh Psh Commander in Chimp."
"Bet HE'S a C from Yale too."
I knew the line had to be drawn when there were separate water fountains at the train station for Americans.
It was not a good time. Things have just taken a complete 180 though since then. Now I can be proud of being who I am because of just one man.
On another note, that Times article you linked appears to have been written by somebody who… let's say, doesn't like Russia very much.
This guy has a different opinion but he's writing news? WTF is up with that? We can't even call it news if it doesn't agree with what we think.
So he deserves the award because people like him? That's not actually doing anything, that's just being a nice guy. And Obama is a very likable guy (as far as politicians go; sorry, I don't trust people in office very much), but.. seriously, what did he do to deserve this over other candidates?
well i know i'll get yelled at by someone but i also think him being a black president has a lot to do with this i mean that's a big thing seeing as how back in the 1950's there was still segregation laws and all (i think) he shows what an improvement america has made or some mkight say he's the new symbol of that improvement
now as to if he deserved it idk but i had a rather fun time listening to two kids in the next class over (at school) arguing (screaming) at the top of their lungs and talking so fast you couldn't understand a word either of them said, over this exact subject
I like Obama, I support him, and congrats to him, but he was nominated for the Peace Prize in February 2009, when he'd only been in office for a month. The middle east is still unstable, most of his initiatives have faced serious road blocks, and he's supported leaders like Castro… and he fumbled the whole Gitmo ball, in my opinion. I'm a democrat, I voted for him, but I'm not going to say because he made three very nice speeches and has been, despite heavy opposition, trying his best to deliver on the promises of his presidency that he's earned this prize.
I mean, if I were Bill Clinton right now, I'd be pretty peeved. Carter? Roosevelt? MLK? They earned their prizes. The idea of an award of such value being given on "potential" smacks of Starry Eyed Obama-ism to me, and I don't really know if that sits well with me.
Well Carter won a Nobel Peace Prize
Carter negotiated a peace between two peoples with a thousand year blood hatred toward one another. And he didn't even get it while he was sitting in office.
…
That said, Obama getting the Nobel is a disaster. Even if the Nobel Foundation is so obsessed with him that they think the Nobel will give an edge in foreign policy, no one in any position of power is going to respect it.
It's like giving a Medal of Honour to a REMF who was shot in the arse by a stray bullet off of a firing range.
Not only that, but the prize only serves to piss off the people who already don't like Obama, which only undermines his foreign policy efforts.
Agreed. I never thought I'd see the day where the Nobel friggin' Peace Prize, of all things, would be renderred meaningless because of partisan politcs. I've seen alot of once-prestigious names and institutions turn to political jokes because of partisanship, but the Nobel Peace Prize?!
And if you think I'm just blowing smoke, look up a man named Greg Mortenson. A cantidate for the peace prize that Obama beat. If you think Obama's accomplishments in his first month in office compare to that guy, then I don't know what to say… I can't imagine having a thought process that partisan...
