Usopp is a man he is naturally stronger than Nami. And way more awesome. I mean we saw him deck Kuro even though Kuro was holding back Usopp still hit him pretty hard. He took out two bodyguards with guns. The best we've seen Nami do in east blue is take out 1 person from behind and then lose in a straight up fight against a fodder.

The very least we've never seen Usopp beaten by a fodder. People take what Oda said a little to seriously. I mean thats why Nami came to Usopp for a weapon because she was the weakest and absolutely no help in a fight.

I think it would depend on the situation, you can't put anyone as the strongest in all situations, for example, during the EL arc, usopp was the only one that could reach robin until franky got to her.

I never suggested Arlong was weak, I felt him to be one of luffy's first real challenge fight.

But when it comes to Usopp I would imagine after being on the grand line so long he should have had enough story development to become strong enough to compare to early enemies. Usopp's development so far was incredibly lame. He went from a normal sling shot, to a sling shot with a breath dial on it. Guess what? Its still slower then a bullet. Useful for throwing smoke screens yes, but battling no.

Take for events: Usopp's battle with the numbers was a good battle. From it you would expect him to gain some muscle strength out of it.

Traveling to skypiea: which is a land full of items that can help one do plenty of things. He witnessed how people fight on skypiea with dials etc, but he only left skypiea with a breath dial for his slingshot? He could have easily put a reject or impact dial on his hands to take phyiscal hits and reduce them. Hell even a gas and fire dial like he did with his fight with luffy.

He pulled out great tricks for one fight then stops? huh?

If Usopp was to develop logically, he would have implemented a way to reduce his weakest point which would be close combat. Also he would improve over all his range of attacks and damage. All his improvements up till this point have been absolutely pointless.

For that he needs upper body strength - his weapon has similarities to Bow and Arrow type fighting. The higher the tensile strength in the bow the further the arrow will fly. The higher the tensile strength is the more stronger a person has to be to draw the string back.

Usopp now has a large body mass - with 2 years of exercise he will have a body shape and muscle mass more in line with his father then the lanky body he had before. So I think he will be able to punch and shove around the stronger enemies found in the NW - I agree with what is said just because Usopp is meant to be the weakest of the SH crew does not make him weak in general.

Very viable - which is why I said he would be on the level of say Sanji when he was on the Baratie. Although now it's been mentioned I am not sure Usopp would be able to shatter stone without the aid of his tools but strong enough to handle fodder. And be able to use a stonger version of his weapon.

In reference to the bolded, part, he actually built a lot more than breath dials into the Kabuto. He has also used impact dials (fight with Luffy and with Perona, sucking up a bazooka and a giant explosive ghost respectively).

Although it'll be advantageous for Usopp to have more physical strength, that shouldn't be his primary focus in effort. Usopp can easily find tools to enhance leverage in his slingshot, such as dials. But now that he's on an island with some of the weirdest ecosystems in the world (one being that the "island" is part of a plant), he'll be developing his creativity, skills, and discovering tools he wouldn't otherwise have gotten.

Another strength of his is running speed and stamina. His weight-loss plan should take care of that.

kabuto uses a breath dial but he somehow puts the essesnce of the other dials into his bullets making

Again, I think you're selling beginning-of-the-series Sanji and Zoro short. They were already monsters when we met them and have only become somewhat bigger monsters in the interim. Usopp is good at what he does, but he's not an overpowering all-around monster like they have always been.

How can you compare a sniper to a close combat fighter anyway? I think even with Usopp's current skill level (Fatsopp aside) he still wouldn't be able to take down Zoro, even if he might land some hits (kind of like how he could do a fair amount of damage to Luffy, but still lost in the end).

I think Usopp has more strength and knowledge to take down tougher opponents regardless of whether he does this by trickery and unconventional methods (alcohol and hammers for example). His main method of fighting will probably still be long range when he gets back from training, but he might fare a bit better if his opponent gets too close.

I'm not comparing Usopp's fighting style to Zoro's or Sanji's. I'm just saying he has become just as capable as they were. Not to mention the way Usopp handled himself against Luffy, there is no doubt in my mind Usopp's latest peak was Zoro and Sanji's humble beginnings.

I think Enies Lobby is when Usopp starts to get a little more confidence. After Sanji's speech to him it kind of shook him out of his funk somewhat. but I dislike the fact that in Thriller Bark, he needs to rely on the power of "Sogeking" to come out on top. It seems obvious that Sogeking is a split personality, and Usopp once again had to be given a pep talk to muster his courage and strength. If the island training doesn't boost his confidence, I'll be disappointed.

also, when usopp no longer needs sogeking to gain confidence, he will have accomplished his dream. to me, that needs to be something that happens near the end of the series. but i guess i could live with a new more badass usopp :happy:

Well I guess Usopp can't be completely badass after the time skip because it leaves no room for development. I just mean I don't want him to only be able to fight as Sogeking, cool as that would be at first. Yeah, definitely. For one thing, trying to take down an admiral with slingshot all to save a friend is pretty badass. When the situation is dire enough, Usopp has proven himself to be braver than he acts most of the time and puts up a good fight.

yeah but i think hes mostly joking. when he gets serious, ussop will put his life on the line, without any sort of self-deceit as to the possible consequences, to protect what he values. just like all the other strawhats. i can think of countless examples, but see piratemarimos just above for a great post-sogeking's introduction one (i was thinking of that EXACT moment just before you posted dude!!)

Except he doesn't - didn't shake as much as he used to.

When he was fighting it was almost instinct - he'd throw some quick shots and then run away. Now he seems to be more prepared to fight and less to run away - he still does but when he stands up he isn't a quivering mess.

He has gotten more sure in himself it shows - he has a long way to go - I just think after the time skip his strength and confidence will be more on par with Sanji's when he was still at Baratie. He wont have the skills to fight as Sanji did but the strength and confidence will be there.

I wish I can make flawless posts (I tend to make mistakes). I always double check, but just because of the exceptional tendency to fudge up something, I'll miss something. Seriously, I make a mistake every sentence I type (but usually gets corrected).

Anyway, Chopper in walking point moves fast, but I'm talking about reflex and reaction speed. I didn't indicate that.

And I forget Brook is a swordsman. Zoro is a muscle-based swordsman, Brook is agility. Usopp is an dexterity-based shooter, Franky focuses on firepower.

If you're talking about standard IQ tests, those aren't really accurate in this case because they don't show results for creativity.

True, but I have to say that the thing about Luffy's crew is that they are all genius's in their own sphere of knowledge, I won't go into examples because everyone who has read the manga should know what I am talking about.

I know several genius's, my father, my sister, several other relatives (talk about giving someone an inferiority complex), and their friends, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that they are all, in their own unique ways, stupid as hell. People are way to complex for us to quantify at this point. Maybe thousands of years in the future we might be able to, but right now, no way in hell.

Ah this is where it dissapeared to, I was typing the reply and it vanished on me XD
Anyway on the topic, Oda is quite inconsistent with thier intelligence. Characters like Usopp,Franky, Chopper, Nami and Sanji are all very smart characters but act like idiots quite often. And then the dumb characters Luffy and Zoro have thier flashes of brilliance every now and then
It is really hard to tell =_=
All I know is that Robin is meant to be the smartest.

But this is really hard to say. All have their own intelligences.

We all think Luffy is dumb but it just seems that he has a lack of interest or attention span. Luffy while fighting Crocodile, caught on really fast.
Gear 2nd (Second Gear) involves him speeding up his heart rate and using his legs as a form of pump to push through more blood. If his heart wasn't rubber it would have easily killed him. Luffy seems to be smart in a certain way.

It really depends what we are considering intelligence.
Sanji spent his childhood reading through those cooking books for a very long time. Sanji also has a way with words. His style of speaking in ways of poetry is more intelligent than most characters.

I also think that Usopp is very intelligent in certain areas.
He obviouly has a level of creativity above the rest of the crew.
He is very talented in art. Remember the elaborate snow sculptures he made?
He designed the Jolly Roger for Luffy also. We noticed that he has an understanding of weather also. He made the weapon Nami uses. Instructions were needed for what combination of weather elements Nami should use to make lightning.
All the stories he made up and told Kaya show that his ability for story telling was also
a notch above the rest.

well, after the 2 years training, with usoppe's new awesome power, franky's improvement and so on… new ranking i'll give the crew is

1. Luffy
2. Zoro
3. Sanji (it's been long since he was part of monster trio. and not sure if he improved must after training. I dunno if he's stronger that usoppe..)
4. Usoppe (Oda's been vamped on rising usoppe and refining his char. with his new powers, he's at the top. not the top 3 though...)
5. Franky (he's got to be #3 in raw power, but he has limitations)
6. Brook (no improvement)
7. Robin (no improvement) NOOOO robin why have you fallen so low..T.T u used to be #3 back in alabasta....but you just kept on falloing asd falling...
8. Chopper (good supporting char training.)
9. Nami (her training wasn't for strength, it's to be a good supporting character)

As far as intelligence goes, they all have their specialties. You need medical advice, Chopper is the person to go to. Anything on chemistry or weather, you want Nami. Information about locations or history, go to Robin. Kind of like, you may have a friend who has a PHD in astrophysics, but you wouldn't go to him for medical advice. As far as actual IQ goes, well we won't be sure unless Oda releases it to us.

As for fighting, it's hard to say even after the Fishman Island arc because they all pretty much fought fodder. But we can probably safetly assume that Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji are still at the top (and in that order). We'll probably have to wait till after this arc to see how far they have truly improved.
