There's a lot of things I hate about dub Luffy. Arlong Park was completely ruined by Funi.
Them constantly replacing "nakama" with "friends" when "crew" or "shipmates" is more appropriate grates me to know end.
Let alone them making Zoro's VA talking through a pencil.

Its actually neither. It's a new arrangement and remix of a Dub BGM done by a fan, in tune is sounds generally the same, but the arrangement is completely different.
Oh wow, they did a really good job then.
One Piece - Season 2, 6th Voyage - Episode titles!
*Ep 130 being on the set is now officially official
Awesome! 14 episodes in a couple of weeks! Can't wait!

Um,
Japanese: Lua/Rua and Luca/Ruca
Dub: Leo and LunaYeah, I know. But in a filler episode of 5D's, they named a character Leo, which almost seems like a poke at the dub.

Another one.
Why do these people exist?
I mean, I know not everyone needs to love FUNi. But usually the ones that don't give such stupid reasons. -_-

Considering it's a direct unoriginal reply to one of Rin's post, calling it anything other than a troll would be dumb.

Who do you mean?
Tails has started to grow on me, as of Unleashed.
Knuckles and Amy have always been fitting.
Eggman is perfect.
Only people who are still "horrible" are the one-off characters like Chip, Jet, and Werehog.I actually was starting to think the Unleashed voices were okay (except Chaz Princeton) until I heard Amy and Tails. Tails' voice is one of the reasons I don't like him much anymore, and Amy's is just horrible imo, ditto Cream.. Knuckles' is tolerable but I don't like it. So basically I have trouble with the main cast, which is unfortunate. It doesn't help that everytime someone new joins the first thing I think of is what character they played in a 4kids show…
Sorry this reply's hella late but I had to express my distaste >_>Anyway, lol nakama~
-
Yeah, I know. But in a filler episode of 5D's, they named a character Leo, which almost seems like a poke at the dub.
Eh, it also could've been 'english for english's sake' like Carly or Misty.
-
Actually, it did have the ridiculous censoring. FUNi had been doing the dub since the beginning. In the beginning, they just subcontracted the word to Ocean, it wasn't owned by Ocean, it was still FUNi. That version cut 12 episodes worth of material and is responsible for "HFIL", Tenshinhan's ability to Regrow arms, Vegeta saying Goku's Father was a "BRILLIAN SCIENTIST!" and Nappa blowing up a plane, only to have Tenshinhan remark "I can see the parachutes, They're Ok!"
They didnt lighten up on the edits until Season 3 when they started doing the series in-house.
That being said, and to get this conversation back to One Piece, I REALLY don't like seeing people rag on the One Piece dub for minor things like Luffy adding in "That's What Friends do… HES GONNA PAY!" in Arlong Park, or ragging on Certain attacks and acting like any minute change from the Japanese version is like FUNimation is personally going to Eiichiro Oda's house and kicking him. But then this same person turns around and says "But I like the DBZ Dub". It's odd. "I hate The most minor of changes to One Piece, but I love a dub where they changed everything".
Bendario is a shining example of this. Back during Arlong Park, I remember him complaining about Arlong's attacks, and Sanji's lack of French. But he JUST said he can't stand DBZ in Japanese, and the DBZ dub is MUCH worse than anything the OP dub has done. It's a double standard, and it's kinda messed up.
Don't put words in my mouth, lady. I said (I'll quote it if I have to) that I only dislike Goku's Japanese VA. That's it. As a matter of fact, I specifically stated that I haven't seen much of the Dragon Ball series in Japanese, and that's because I just don't care that much about the series. So please, point out the part where I said I "can't stand DBZ in Japanese, and the DBZ dub is MUCH worse than anything the OP dub has done." I wouldn't know, because I've never watched the uncut DBZ dub.
Edit: And yes, I was complaining about those two things. I still can see no good reason to replace Sanji's French attack names nor his dessert line, not that it matters any more. I also don't really get changing Arlong's attack names and removing his special laugh when they kept them in Unlimited Adventure (though, that is probably Toei's doing). But otherwise, I've been happy with the dub.
-

They gave that reason time and time again. If you weren't listening, that's your problem.

It's not really THAT out of line. Funi does this with most of their anime and they're usually hit or miss.
Funi's Yu Yu Hakusho is very different from the original, but it's also better. Many would say the same about DBZ.
I wouldn't say that about One Piece.

GOOD reason. LTR.

Okay… Cool? I stand by the fact that I don't really like it. Still an awesome scene, though. And I was just looking for that part about me hating the Japanese DBZ and I can't for the life of me find it. Maybe Rin would like to help out.

How does one quantify better, espicially when they fail to keep in line with the original? It sounds more to me like Toonami gen anime fans asserting their nostalgia in place of a fact-based analysis of why one licensor's two dubs of two different series' that often come off as parodies are now somehow 'better' than their original shows which already had fans globally before said licensor even existed.

Or in short: Take off those damned nostalgia goggles!

When are we gonna make a Unoffical Funi DVD V2 Discussion thread?

@LUFFY#1:
When are we gonna make a Unoffical Funi DVD V2 Discussion thread?
Holy shit, we are getting there aren't we?
We're still about 1500 replies away, so not right away, but it's fast coming…
-
Yes, but next time it should be called "Official Funi DVD Discussions V2." Where did "Unofficial" come from?
-
Is there a 10,000 post cap on threads here? O.o
I'd wait for Season Three First Voyage, but whatever…
-
@Yuugi's:

Yeah, notice the One Piece Collectibles thread is on "v3" and the Bleach and Naruto Threads are each on like, "v5".
-
@The:
Eh, it also could've been 'english for english's sake' like Carly or Misty.
Point taken. But it's still a funny coincidence, don't you think?
Wait, they delete the threads after a certain amount? I must be close to my one year anniversary here or something. oO I've never seen a thread deleted in my time here so far.
Wouldn't it be nice if this thread had a day without a war?
-
No, the old threads dont get deleted, its just they stop bumping at 10,000 posts, so a new thread has to be made.
-
Oh okay, that makes sense.

Regarding YYH, it's simply a better script. The best example to explain this that I can think of off the top of my head comes early on when Hiei kidnaps Keiko.
In the scene, Keiko is thinking about her relationship with Yusuke when Hiei approaches her on the sidewalk. In the dub says something generic and villainy, and attacks her. Simple and by the books.
In the dub, Funi changed it to "Don't worry, he likes you well enough!" which is an absolutely brilliant improvement. Hiei is a telepath. He knows what Keiko is thinking. So while she's worried about her and Yusuke, he's confirming to her that Yusuke cares enough about her that he's going to make her a hostage.
It's a very small change, but it's also a very good one. Funi added multiple layers to what was otherwise a generic throwaway line.
In the case of YYH, they took what was otherwise a kinda generic show and improved on it in their adaptation.
Their script work on One Piece hasn't been quite as good. Where Funi added a line to a scene in YYH and made that scene 10x better, adding a line to the Nami-Luffy-stabbing scene in Arlong Park did not have near the same result.

See, I'm all for ad-libbing and editing the script as long as the editing lends towards the characterization and story. Nothing that they did to YYH took away from the characterization, and didn't change any of the events of the story. In YYH, Yusuke is still a punk kid who gets thrown into this job, and slowly goes from punk to Hero, without losing that "Punk" nature. Kuwabara is still a goofy rival for Yusuke with a strict honor code and a crush on Yukina. Hiei is still a little jerk who starts out evil and for himself but slowly grows this notion of teamwork and friendship. And Kurama is still the well-spoken, brilliant master tactician that he, and they all are in the Japanese version. Their edits brought out and enhanced the original stories and characterization rather than work against or change it.
The Dragon Ball franchise dub didn't follow this same thing. Their edits and changes went AGAINST the Characterization. Son Goku's character was changed from a naive carefree guy who is only interested in furthering his own fighting capabilities and fighting stronger guys to test himself, to a White Knight superhero. Vegeta's character was fundamentally changed in the beginning. His entire speech about "Low Class vs. Elite" was removed., and he now actually makes a comment that goes AGAINST that original notion. And his dialog during his death scene, in the Japanese version he just tells Son about Freeza's transgressions, that's kind of it. In the Dub, he pretty much blames his evilness and personality entirely on Freeza.
That's the big difference. But again, my big gripe is seeing fans bitch about not only the One Piece dub, but the Naruto Dub, and the Bleach dub and the Death Note dub, and then turn around and say DBZ was better in English. It just irritates me that we get such faithful dubs that get attacked for relatively minor things, while DBZ gets praised for doing MUCH worse…
And Bendario, I'm sorry, I was honestly mistaken.
-
Well don't look at me to argue the merits of DBZ dubbed or subbed. About the only opinions I have on that subject is that I never cared for Goku sounding like a girl and that the later seasons of the dub had a freaking epic soundtrack.

You know, that scene always did sound really out of place. All of a sudden the mortally wounded Vegeta starts whining about how 'he never had a chance' to be good. Just suck it up and die like the son of a bitch you are.
Goku's goodie-goodieness also seemed… off, even having never watched the sub, but it was never something that really bothered me.

See, even someone who has never seen the Japanese version at length can see there's something off about these character breaking moments. Its not that there's any one of these things that's huge enough to be a deal-breaker, its that there's so many of these things, like Son's Superhero-ness, AND Vegeta's "I never had a chance to be good" stuff, and that Freeza makes homoerotic comments to Son, etc etc. Individually, these things and the several other story-altering moments are just minor annoyances. All together they make a REALLY unfaithful adaptation.
-
So wait… I can understand that FUNi changed their policies with anime and started doing uncut after they were editing DBZ, but why wouldn't they just go back and redo the script for the uncut version when they know they severely changed it?
-
When they began doing their in-house dub in 1999 with episodes 68-291 they were doing both an uncut dub and edited dub. It just so happened Barry Watson didn't care to make the uncut dub's dialogue faithful to the original, it continued to be the same crappy Americanization and writing on Dragon Ball up until he left FUNimation. The thing is, he didn't leave until they did all of Dragon Ball (save for Dragon Ball: The Legend of Shen Long)…

Hmm, thanks for the info. I guess anime dubbing really was a whole different world back then.
-
db kai is coming out so you guys can stop or continue with your DBZ dub hat
-
I surely hope its all "Done Over" Change some of the cast around or you know what, leave the cast all of them, even if they are all Chris Sabat. People didnt have a problem with Sabat being alot of roles right?
Just change the script to be more "True to the Original Content". That way some wont feel alienated with the new voices.
-
So…I just pre-ordered One Piece S2V6 on RightStuf. This is the first time I actually buy something on RightStuf, so I hope it wasn't a bad decision. If the item ships before it is released (like the cases we had with many people here who ordered from RightStuf), then I will order all my One Piece DVDs from there. Yeah it cost like an additional buck compared to amazon, but if it arrives before then it is worth it for me.
-
Amazon has that set much higher I think
-
Amazon is a dollar cheaper then rightstuf is.
-
Paying one dollar more to get your set 2 weeks (or in some cases, almost a month) early is well worth it.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Then I will surely not regret buying from RightStuf.
-
When will Voyage 7 be on Right Stuff!?!?
Grr, I hope there's a sale when it is.
-
Well Funi's april solidications are still not up yet(even though they are just reprices and re-releases on stuff), I don't think we will see May solidications till at least the last week in Febuary.
-
When will Voyage 7 be on Right Stuff!?!?
Grr, I hope there's a sale when it is.
The last FUNi sale was in January, my guess is that the next wont come until April and we should definitely have the May solicits by then.
-
Not for me I rathe have free shipping from Amazon, then getting it couple weeks early. Since with the Iowa state taxes, it make it more expensive to order from Rightstuf then amazon. Since I order Season 1, part 1 from right stuf, it cost me $47.00 that inculding the Iowa state taxes (which Rightstuf is in Iowa).
Thats why I order from amazon, so I can get free shipping for anything over $25.00, (while rightstuf its $50.00). So I don't mind getting the sets a few days late as they come out.
-
Totally sympathize with you and other Iowa folk; seems like Amazon's the best deal for you guys.
But for anyone else, really, RightStuf. Buy/preorder two voyages, that'll clear up shipping. I'll again tell you what you gotta do.
-
Is the free shipping reliable though? What is the economy shipping anyways, the regular mail truck?
-
Yeah, Free Shipping reliable. When I order the One Piece dvds off Amazon it always comes from the post office.
-
Same here for RS.
-
I'm gonna go on and hypothesize a little: I think that Funi's plan is going to be 1 Season per year ending the last and starting the next between May and June.
So, we might get all Season 3 in a schedule more or less like Season 1 since there are 5 voyages instead of 7. Unless they rush through Season 3 and 4 in the same year, something I would be happy about.
-
so i was surprised to find "towards the light" on the last episode of fifth voyage, i wasn't expecting it. Also the commentary was awesome. i loved the homestar runner and strong bad references.
-
Wait, where are the dvds now? Towards the light,If I remember correctly, starts at Namis fight with Miss Doublefinger, right?
-
Wait, where are the dvds now? Towards the light,If I remember correctly, starts at Namis fight with Miss Doublefinger, right?
No, the third opening started on episode 116, the second half of the Bon Clay vs. Sanji fight. This was included on fifth voyage and the DVD version (same as the broadcast version but with a higher quality sound) has already been up on youtube for a while on my account. It was linked here a while ago.
-
@ThegreatPirateKing:
same as the broadcast version but with a higher quality sound
…I'm aware that this question is probably completely unnecessary, but when you say it's the same as the broadcast version... You don't literarily mean exactly the same, right? Because the broadcast-version had Sanji's cigarette edited out and all…
