Gear 2nd…Gear 3rd which is your favorite?

In all honesty i think that Gear 2nd is my favorite….but i like gear 3rd too....but sadly they both have potential weaknesses

see gear 2nd sux just because it take up an extreme amount of nutrients from the body and it is as that pigeon guy said...it's like "speed" more like doping to put it exactly. Morever, if luffy uses it for too long as we already know he becomes uterly useless.

gear 3rd however sux even more.... even though i see a great potential in gear 3rd. Gear 3rd has two major weaknessses from what i gathered

1. slows down your speed due to the increased size in the body
2. once used up yah shrink to a size of a kid and become as weak as one

Gear 4th...this my "theoritcial gear".. you can read about it if you want.....
it's a combo of gear 3rd and gear 2nd....in the gear (remember this is a theory!). It's actually more of gear 3rd than 2nd.....but you'll see what i mean. Anyways in this gear luffy expands not just one part of his body....by blowing into his finger he expands everything!!! Thus making him become a living giant, but in order to move such a mass he will have to use gear 2nd at the same time in order to provide movement for his body.

Well anyways that's my crazy theory.... and onto the main topic....
yes gear 2nd has been my favorite and always will be favorite. ^_^

Gear Three, because it actually feels like something that hasn't been done to death a thousand times before in other shonen, and because nothing says "owned" more than being punched out by a fist the size of a building.

Yet I guess if I had to choose it would be gear 3. The "so fast you can't see it" moves have been done to death. But Luffy making is arm giant proves he is smart and resourceful.

We all know that some how somewhere luffy and his opponent will wear each other down so thoroughly that the fate of the world will depend on a chibi vs chibi fight.

I'm split pretty even between the both of them.

Gear 2: Speed is always great and I really think it's a pretty neat technique. It's much better than just a "Well Luffy just got so strong he has super speed!" and of course it has the whole time limit and ruining Luffy's body weakness things which makes it a little more interesting. My main problem is I think it'll become a huge crutch for Luffy in later fights. Since from here opponents are only going to become faster and he'll use G2 to match them. Unless he makes up another technique which makes him faster or he just gets faster for no particular reason I can see him using G2 at lease once in every big fight till the end of the series which will get a little annoying.

Gear 3: I love it. It's creative, has good weaknesses and is fun to see. My only problem is that I don't know how much Luffy will use it. As I said, opponents will only be getting faster from this point on and using something slow like G3 will leave Luffy wide open and and his chibi form will only make things worse for him. Even though I absolutely love it I am just can't see how useful it'll be in the future.

I think Gear 2 is much more powerful. Speed plus Luffy's strength = super punches!!!!!

It can deliver lots of damage, and most of it is delivered before your opponent can even react.

Who seriously likes Gear 3rd? It's a tool at best with little combat use. I mean, sure if he were fighting a wall maybe. And Luffy's silly enough just normal so I don't need to see a 'power-up' that's a joke.

The only decent aspect of Gear 2nd is the scientific aspect and the steam. "Hohoho, look at me zip around at invisible speeds!" is so overdone.

Frankly, I really don't like either move. They were awesome when they were first introduced, but Gear 2 is little more than OP's Super Saiyan and Gear 3 had that weird "power-down" thing. The concept was awesome, though.

gear 3, been a giant is cool. the trouble is the side effect. when luffy activate gear 3 for 5 minute, he will become chibi luffy for another 5 minute.

I like both really. The steam was a nice touch for Gear 2's apperance (I'm not sure if one can count the pink skin as Luffy's JUS sprites and coloured segments of the manga panels show him with his regular skin colour), how he activates it and I so love watching or reading him lay into a confused Blueno with it. Gear 3 is very original - gaining super strength by blowing air into his various body parts, watching as a huge fist comes storming towards his foe and it has a great weakness.

The only thing I dislike about them is if they're treated like every other anime power up - Luffy only stands a chance of beating his opponent with either the speed of Gear 2 or the strength of Gear 3. As much as I like it when a character activate and use their powered up form, the fact they need to use it to win almost every battle gets so repetitive. So far the Gears are different and innovative when compared to other power ups (they're not based around some mystical force like a sealed demon, part of their blood line or the full power of a related weapon) as they're made by Luffy playing with what his body can do, and generally seem more like the "stances" used in some fighting games like Soul Calibur that allow the player to use different moves. I don't want this novelty ruined because Oda chooses to have Luffy use them every time a fight turns out to be a bit tougher than he expected.

I voted for Gear 3, mostly for the same reasons that have already been posted – it's very creative, and very satisfying to see a fist the size of a building crush an enemy.

Caracal brings about a good point, though, that hopefully Oda doesn't overuse these gears. Otherwise each fight will end up being a "wait until Luffy whips out Gear 2/3" fight, which will get boring quickly.

I have faith that Oda will find something else for him to do, though!

I think a hypnotized Luffy is stronger than a rampaging luffy because it seems like Jango's hypnotisms somehow makes his brain relinquish restraint. Which is probably how he can make people stronger than they actually are, by stopping their brain from stopping them going all out.

luffys gears are different from saiyan lvls

gears are more like different modes-each have a weakness…gear 2 is not better than gear 3, and gear 3 is not better than gear 2

while saiyan lvl ups are just powerups (faster, stronger, better defense) with no weaknesses...well each higher lvl covers the weakness of the lower ones

I'm not a pure fan of uber power-up, however Gear is just the name of an attack.
It's not like Super Saiyen 1/2/3 with no real drawback…. it's more like "strengthened speed" (but badly hurting Luffy's body), "strengthened power attack" (but deeply slowing Luffy & turns him in chibi Luffy).

Stopping gear simply implies stopping new attacks. No more new attack for Zoro, etc, etc.

Main characters need to improve and there isn't a lot of option. Either they use the same attacks and Oda just told us "yeah, it's just 100x more powerfull than 50 chapters ago, even if the power was already maxed out and the new guy is 100x times stronger than the previous vilain" or it's a new attack (ie. named Gear or whatever for Luffy).

My guess is there won't be any new Gear (or maybe something equivalent to Tekkai for defense). At worst, in the end, Luffy will need a combinaison of Gears. Therefor I guess the attacks name could be Gear 5 (2+3) or Gear 6 (2*3) if the attack increase Luffy speed & strengthened somehow his power.

I like em both so much. But if I had to pick it would be Gear second. It was the coolest and most logical thing Oda has done. The whole "Luffy being able to do this because of his rubber body" was brilliant.

In a long term way, it's best not to over use Gear 2 or 3........

In a short term way, yes, it's good to use Gear 2 or 3..... once in a while, but it's not the solution to every problem.....

Luffy needs to invent a more better move that has the speed of Gear 2 and the power of Gear 3........
