The only positive I see is the single last shot with Carrey as bald Robotnik.
General Sonic the Hedgehog Thread (Now With Movie 3 & Knuckles)

Can you imagine the reaction if they'd HADN'T been leaking that awful design before now?
-
There are things I can appreciate about that trailer. Jim Carrey is quite serviceable for the doc, who's definitely gotten more and more sassy as Mike Pollock has expanded into the role. And I actually like how he's not immediately crazy-looking, like he's deliberately slickibg down his mustache to hide his inner insanity, at least somewhat. I don't love his acting in general, but Robotnik's who I'm the least worried about.
I also don't mind a lot of the other changes, like Sonic's quills being electric and slightly translucent. That he's lived alone and scrounged around for things like his shoes make sense for the character. The spin dash was cool, the matrix slowdown was interesting. Even Ben Schwartz sounds good as Sonic; for me, he comes in 3rd behind Roger Craig Smith and Jaleel White.
But let me put on my ranting cap now: Sonic looks HORRIBLE. No doubt about it, that creature is absolutely hideous. The lips, the teeth, the gangly muscles with that giant floppy wig of a hairdo. The face is so unappealing, and it's disjointedly stuck onto a body equally unappealing. They wanted the make the design work more for a movie, but what good is making more sense anatomically if it makes everyone want to avoid looking at it?
Comparing it to Detective Pikachu may be obvious, but there's a reason some of the weird designs in that movie work: they're not the main character. Pikachu looks perfect most of the time, the majority of the Pokemon look great. The ones that are off-putting like Mr. Mime and Lickitung are there for varity, texture, as a juxtaposition to the cute and reasonably unobtrusive Pikachu. Sonic is carrying the movie on his own: he's only got humans to compare to, so he needed to look aesthetically pleasing a lot more than anatomically correct.
The writing and stock government plot wasn't hot, but the other part that majorly annoyed me was the bag scene. Besides being an excuse to save on animating that…thing, it was just creepy. Who admits to stuffing a kid in a bag in what looks like a government building? And those people just backing away: what, are they worried they'll be next or something? Call security!
Bottom line, this film ain't for me, at least not in theaters. If Detective Pikachu is breaking the video game movie curse, Sonic is conducting a blasphemous ritual to bring the curse back.
Skip to 3:08 for my final thought on this trailer:
-
Plot wise, it looks average. Like the ring teleport part. I'm iffy on Jim Carry, but it looks like he's doing all he can with the role. The more realistic Sonic doesn't work. Why put him on our Earth? They're humans on Sonic's world, do that. If this movie came out before Detective Pikachu it might get more credit but right now, no.
Argh. The teeth and lips are horrific.
Why does Jim look like the best part of this movie? I bet he gets his Egg Man shape at the end of the movie.
You know, a lot of people been saying that. Sucks if it's true. Don't give moviegoers a fully realized Eggman in the last minute just to setup a sequel. That's like if Batman '89 fought Gangster Guy all threw the movie then Joker pops out the chemical tank right at the end.

This is every bit as embarrassingly awful as I thought it would be, and I love it.
Also, Robotnik looks like a Lazy Town character.

Now I wish Robotnik was Robbie Rotten.

Someone suggested that this is a movie from the mid-90s that is only getting made now and I can totally see it: Sonic, Coolio, manic Jim Carrey, VIDEO GAMES GET REAL
-
And thus the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has fulfilled its purpose of making the Pokemon from Detective Pikachu look much more tolerable.
-
Can't wait for the spin off Shadow the hedgehog :ninja:
-
Jim Carrey looks like a Chuckle Brother.
!

Nah we'll get a Dr.Robotnik origin movie.

Nah we'll get a Dr.Robotnik origin movie.
I'm okay with that as long as we get a fast and furious crossover, can't wait to see Sonic face off against the Rock

No, it was made in the 90's, they just didn't have the CG budget to do it until now.
-
I kinda want to take that Jim Carrey performance and shift it over to a Marvel film. Hell, make him Jonas Harrow.

Jim Carrey IS Reed Richards
-
I am . . . . confused.
Sonic as a character doesn't look . . . . awful, he just seems like Sonic. Which is good. But he looks freakish. Which is bad. Although that was a cool spin, and why wouldn't he have lightning quills?
Jim Carrey looks completely in his game, which is awesome as I love kooky Jim Carrey. Evil Jim Carrey is especially fun. So that's good.
I don't know who the hell the human partner for Sonic is, and he seems almost pointless. Boring. Give me Tails.
Nitpick: who the fuck decided Gangsta's Paradise was a good song for this? It might not seem so stupid if it wasn't for that completely unfitting song.So yeah. Not sure at all about this. Other than I never cared about getting a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
-
-
At least we got 90s Jim Carrey.
That doesn't seem like a good thing. He's painfully unlike anything resembling Robotnik.
Sonic's the best thing in the trailer, and that says a lot.
-
It's only superficially 90s Jim Carrey, there's none of that Ace Ventura or Mask charisma.
It's not silly enough to be Long John Baldrey Eggman, not intimidating enough to be Jim Cummings Eggman, and not entertaining enough to be modern Eggman.

This is the weirdest case of typecasting I've seen.
-
That's perfect considering Coolio is like the one guy that publicly had a problem with Al doing a parody… even though he and his label clearly agreed to the parody beforehand.
And now 20 years later he agrees to let his super serious song "not meant to be made fun of" in the trailer for THIS. SO yeah.

Isn't weird al doing a parody of your song supposed to be like a badge of honor in the music industry?

Isn't weird al doing a parody of your song supposed to be like a badge of honor in the music industry?
It is. Coolio was the one guy in decades who complained, everyone else was flattered, its a sign that they'd made it.
And again, this is after it was cleared through him and his label. Al had permission to do the parody, or else he would have left it off the album.

So now apparently the director has said that Sonic is going to be redesigned following the negative backlash.
Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed. I mean, this movie is gonna suck no matter what. Stick to your guns, Jeff. But hey, maybe the redesign will be even worse.
-
Unless they already have an alternate design ready to go, how would that even work without delaying the film by months?
They can't just call an actor in to reshoot a few scenes for something like that.
-
Prediction: the redesign will also be ass
-
I don't expect the redesign to be drastically different. Theres likely a whole mess of tie-in merch that needs to be finalised earlier that the 6 months we have til release.
-
They'll probably just change Sonic's eyes, and maybe some of the coloring, but leave the anatomy alone. Much else will take massive CG rework. Unless the only thing finished was the trailer stuff. If they've only got 45 seconds of CG out of 20 minutes of screentime, they have time to fix it because they still had to do the rest of it anyway. I assume 20 minutes, and that Sonic is going to have next to no screentime in his own movie because it's pretty clear the time is going to be padded with cheap human actors… hence Sonic being in a suitcase for a scene and most of the trailer being Jim Carrey.
Since his proportions are clearly a result of lazy mocap instead of actual animation, I'm not sure what they can do if they're very far in, because they won't be able to just swap that frame with another one with totally different proportions and joint positions.
I just want to know who was so stuck up their ass they insisted this design go forward. Because the art team HAD to have told them along the way it was bad and that people wouldn't like it.
Or, most likely of all, a whole bunch of animators are about to kill themselves with sick overtime crunch they don't get compensated for very well.
Since Sonic is the only CG that will need fixing, stuff like the machines and explosions can stay as is, so that doesn't need to be done from scratch at least. And it doesn't look like they're doing the iconic checkerboard loops or anything so...
-
Redesigned Sonic will just be a constant blur due to him always being in motion.
-
@Cyan:
Prediction: the redesign will also be ass
Twist: exact same design but he no longer has blue arms.
-
Exclusive first look at the new design.

Just for fun, I figured I'd look at the Sonic the Hedgehog Wikipedia page. According to the Summary section, the James Marsden character comes from Green Hills, Montana.
So yes, according to this movie, Green Hill Zone is in Montana. I'll be sure to remember that each time I play that level in the future.
-
That's not surprising, Chemical Plant Zone is in Michigan.
-
@Cyan:

Wouldn't that actually be Metallic Madness [Bad Future]?

See, little bits like that can make it a fun movie. But when it's freaky like it is, it's harder to enjoy it.

Does that means Casino Zone is in Vegas?

Does that means Casino Zone is in Vegas?
Atlantic City, actually.
Knuckles was tired of coming out on the losing end, so he met this guy last night and he's going to do a little favor for him.

Just gonna drop a bunch of these.

Is that a real trailer cause it comes off looking awkward…...even more than the official one we got.

It's from a Meme YT channel so the answer is pretty obvious.
-
Yeah should've saw the Kill La Kill avatar in the corner of the video:ninja:
-
The film is, unsurprisingly, being pushed back to a February 2020 release.
-
I really wonder how much havok thats going to cause on tie-in merch.
But I'm glad they did that. 6 months to entirely rework a core CG character from (presumably) the ground up is going to take alot of work. Glad to see they're not going to overwhelm the VFX artists too much.
But its not like this is going solve everything else that's wrong with the movie.
