@ponx:
True, that as an author, its much easier to use a formerly introduced premise rather than introducing a new one. But why make it vague then? If I were to use that established premise, I'd have made it clear (and even more so with Oda, after all the man is a damn good writer).
[hide]@KiShiDo:
This would mean he could absorb each damn DF and use it? o_O
@Croy:
Yeah this sounds like the powers of the Yami Yami no mi. Not only can he absorb the damage of a fruit powers, knock out a fruits power from its user, but upon the users death he can flat out absorb it…
@GaaraofTheDesert:
Blackbeard is now officially Sylar.
@Kiavik:
I think it's all in the abilities of the Yami Yami no Mi. Or the "Megaman" fruit, as we can dub it from now on I guess.
@Aohige_AP:
Akainu better not get eaten, or we'll have even more serious problem. Intangible Darkness Magma Quake Teach would be…. unstoppable.
@Ryuksgelus:
Called this ability…...well not really. I always suspected he could fire back any abilities he's absorbed like Ace's fire or Magellan's poison making him a truly terrifying demonic opponent. Actually his line about him actually having the power of the devil makes more sense now. The devil in his fruit wants to reclaim its lost powers from the other fruits**.** Oda's a sly dog because these turn of events means we won't get an answer to how long it takes till another fruit grows when its user dies or where grow at.
@Dan:
Guys, i bet it was some perk of his original fruit that allows him to do this. That's why he wanted it so bad. He stumbled on the fact and made his plan to cheat his way to the top.
@Croy:
Like he said (and someone else pointed out) it was noted from the beginning that this 'fruit' was the closest thing to the devil himself. That was the foreshadowing Oda had for this fruit possibly absorbing other fruits. I mean we just assumed it had the ability to suck a power from a user so that the user couldn't use it, but maybe it was sucking the power from the user and thanks to the person being alive he couldn't 'posses it'. Still like others have said, I hope there is some limits to this, if not we might see a villian in this story that becomes so broken any possible defeat against him will seem like a cop out lol.
@Uncle:
You're next, Ace.
[/hide]Well, I've gone over the spoiler thread a few times, since I had to pull up Aohige's translations, and in my opinion everyone's initial reaction was basically, "HOLY SH**, THE DARKNESS FRUIT CAN ABSORB ANOTHER DEVIL'S FRUIT!?" See the quotes above as a few examples. Keep in mind, also, that "established premise" means just that, the premise had already been established, so Marco's comment could have simply been framing what we already knew, that the Darkness Fruit had very unique abilities. To me, it made sense immediately, and there didn't seem to be any doubt from other fans until Aohige brought up his 'Ace comment' theory later.
@ponx:
I would strongly disagree with the terms "extremely convenient for BlackBeard" and "forced explanation". Those terms suggests that the "weird body" plot was only made to give BlackBeard 2 DFs, and I really don't think so.
I don't mind agreeing to disagree on this, but note that at this moment you agree that the "weird body" plot serves one purpose, to give Blackbeard two Devil Fruits. I certainly agree we will get more info on all of this later, but who can say what 'more' will be?
@ponx:
Lastly, though this is purely speculation, IF it was BlackBeard's DF that allows him to take 2 DFs, then whats stopping him from taking the 3rd? the 4th? etc, etc. […] What does BlackBeard do with all those stolen DF powers?
True enough, this question takes us in to the dangerous ground of fan fiction, but if I had to make a guess? When a power user dies, their ability is "reborn" somewhere else, right? I figure Blackbeard, at that moment, is able to "suck in" the Devil Fruit from them, allowing it to be reborn there and consumed again. That thought alone seems very strange, but how else could he be doing it? I have no other suggestions. Furthermore, this chapter says he is killing and stealing their powers, so the one similarity we have to go on is that all of the power users are dead. From there, it gets even more fanficcy… my only suggestion would be that he can only contain one fruit inside his logia enhanced body at a time, because anymore would be like a regular person consuming two. So the other fruit powers he steals go to other crew members. They basically shop for their favorite power, then collect it. Makes enough sense, but Oda has a pretty... interesting... imagination.
