Lol. Hancock looks down on people so much, that she is actually looking up. I love you Oda!

yeah that sentence….pure gold

Great Chapter. Even without the translation it was interesting and exciting to me. Especially the part where it went back and forth between Luffy dawdling and the Amazons scavenging through the forest in search of him. I love how he tried to land all nice on the building, then broke through.
Page 3 was the best:
[hide]- Anyone else kinda creeped out by the middle sister?
- LMAO. Great work there Oda. Looks like Ronald McDonald or something.
- Cool. She does have a Bazooka of sorts.
- LMAO. Oda at his best, I swear. I love this girl!!

hancock is a mermaid of the snake type, when she is in the water her tail comes out and that is the thing that ppl dont have to see… it s not sure that she has a eye or a tatoo on her back luffy says where i saw it before?
Maybe the power of turn people in stone is a combination of the 3 sister. -
i got this on mh:

hancock is evil, but she is beautiful so its ok :) -

doesn't it seem kinda obvious that this whole gorgon monster business is just a lie to hide the fact that hancock has a devil fruit? maybe the warriors on that island wouldn't like devil fruits because you wouldn't be relying on your own strength? maybe all 3 sisters have devil fruits? if hancock does go to the gathering then she might go close to shanbondy island so that's probably how luffy will get on board most likely. that or dress up as a girl and sneak on to the ship.

Interesting theory, i'm sure the peoples of Amazon Lily most likely have that mindset , but then there'd be no point ending on that cliffhanger; "hmm? hey, your back, I've seen that before"
Then again your probably right, but I found that last line quite peculiar.

Franky House Scans by the way is out.
Basement Scans is out as well. -

Thanks for the chapter Deu$.

Many of us have gone over this in the Spoiler thread. I personally think that the Gorgon story is a lie crafted to hide whatever is on her back, and she uses her DF (also a lie) to help in that. However…I am still unsure as she seems to be able to charm people and can turn people into stone. After seeing the way the Granny reacted I think that her charm ability might actually be something natural; though at the same time her whole "Mero Mero" talk brings me back to DF grounds. At this point, who knows. But this is more or less what I feel is most likely at this moment.

The Marines wanted to serve her before she did the Mero Mero talk, though. I think she has the devil fruit of petrification, but she also has the ability to charm most enemies into submission, just as Aldiva did. I think the Gorgon story is a lie too, but I think she made it up for the simple reason of getting all the villagers to fear her without having to kill them. Really, what sort of symbol could be on her back that the villagers in this remote place could recognize?
On the symbol itself… it could be the mark of the Sunny Pirates, or Whitebeard's Mark...
-
Never thought I would break up a post so early in the thread, but: @Keatsta:
The Marines wanted to serve her before she did the Mero Mero talk, though.
I know, but saying "Mero Mero" is very Devil Fruit-ish. Since Mero Mero is not related to turning someone into stone, it leaves me a little confused. Unless it was a fruit that combined both, which I am sure Oda could make it work. Who knows if that is the direction he is even going though.
I think the Gorgon story is a lie too, but I think she made it up for the simple reason of getting all the villagers to fear her without having to kill them.
I would guess she was an Empress before the whole Gorgon thing came about. Maybe. I mean we know they had previous Empress's, so it is not far fetched to believe she was one by right. However, she could very well have usurped the "throne" at some point by using some a "claim" or something that might not even exist. Like the Gorgon thing. Or something else, and the incriminating evidence against her is on her back. Or something. Else. Entirely.
Really, what sort of symbol could be on her back that the villagers in this remote place could recognize?
Who knows? But as we know very little about the Kuja in general anything could go. There is also the matter of Nyon being considered a traitor for leaving. Maybe Hancock has something similar that she is being kept hidden. Perhaps a Jolly Roger of a different pirate crew. Perhaps something else entirely. A Jolly Roger could make sense, as it means she would have "abandoned" the Kuja – when she returned she could use the Gorgon story as the reason for her leaving.
On the symbol itself… it could be the mark of the Sunny Pirates, or Whitebeard's Mark...
This has been suggested. I don't see why it needs to be a symbol necessarily, but I understand why people think it might be. Who knows. Were this true, I suppose it would mark her a traitor. A different Jolly Roger.
-
Looking down on people causes the invisible limbo? How bizarre. I was half-expecting some kind of creepy mesmerization powers. Regardless, Luffy just fucked himself up. I'm not going to bother speculating on Hancock's mark, as at this point, it could be anything from Poneglyph runes to the name of Makino's bar.
The doujinists will almost certainly go to town over the next two weeks.
-
Whatever the symbol is (if a symbol it is), Luffy doesn't seem excited, upset, or too concerned about it. He just says a general "Hey, I've seen that back before."

i quote all u said XD
it is not sure that she has a simbol on her back, and we dont see her legs in the water -
Could just be a bad rash.

maybe she got syphilis!!

Is this on any sites yet? Please post if they are…....:ninja:
As for Boa her charming ability just seems too convenient the way it works on most ppl, I know she said ppl forgive her because she is beautiful but it makes the amazons look dumb and/or weak willed to be easily strayed after being done wrong. It also kinda contradicts the strength is beauty motto the amazons go by since Boa is basically just tricking them with just her beauty instead of like showing her strength to get her way.
A combination of charming and turning ppl in to stone seems like a stretch unless Oda does a twist and is ready to show us the first 2 DF user! Something I've had a theory on for awhile.
This is if the gorgon story is a lie, she could easily have that curse and a DF.
-
If this accidentally double-posts, sorry.

Maybe Hancock has something similar that she is being kept hidden. Perhaps a Jolly Roger of a different pirate crew. Perhaps something else entirely.
But I had a thought when Luffy landed and said he'd seen whatever it was before. Maybe a scar on her back like Duval had mentioned (in fact that whole accidental discovery by Luffy reminded me of him and Duval again).
But instead of a scar of war or battle, maybe it's the scars of childbirth - on her lower back and around her hips.
Stretch marks.
Anyone unwary of getting bigger in any area is subject to them. And Boa, not knowing the signs of pregnancy, didn't moisturize. As she got chunkier, her skin of her hips also stretched.
But this falls in the "Boa is a mommy" theory which I'm not sure about.
Beyond that, does anyone happen to have a good memory of all the tattoos shown before Luffy in One Piece?

Might be reading too much into this but I think it's Oda who is looking dumb here. I just hope this isn't gonna lead to some shit like Uderzo pulled in Asterix and the secret weapon where a unit of female legionaries was "beaten" by setting up a shopping mall to distract them.
-
Hmm has anyone made the theory yet that Nyon is Luffy's grandmother? Cause if not I got dibs on it.
Really for no other reason than that she left for an unknown amount of time when she was still young.Well, whatever is on her back is really embarassing her. With her personality it's go to be something she percieves as ugly. Some birth defect only she and her sisters know about, a mark of some secret shame. A defeat she kept hidden for example.
If one adds her irrational behaviour on the fighting Whitebeard issue and Luffy recognizing whatever is on her back to that I could imagine that a couple of years ago she met Ace or Whitebeard and got defeated or saved by one of them and whoever it was put some sort of marking, either some symbol related to Ace or Whitebeards tatoo, on her for some reason.
Of course that embarasses her no end and thus her pride prevents her from joining the fight against Whitebeard. The advantage of something like that is Luffy would have a rather easy time of hitching a ride to Shabaody.
EDIT:I even found something which it could be:
that thing on the cords of Ace's hat looks suspiciously like the thing Hancock's snake is wearing on its head. -
The Marines wanted to serve her before she did the Mero Mero talk, though. I think she has the devil fruit of petrification, but she also has the ability to charm most enemies into submission, just as Aldiva did. Considering the Marines had no idea what they were doing after the "spell" on them was broken, and given the elder's reaction in this chapter. She doesn't have actually say an attack name for it to be in effect (much like Luffy doesn't have to say Gomu Gomu to be rubber.) So it's likely a passive ability that she might be able to increase, the Mero Mero attack was likely to amplify that power.
-
Maybe Hancock is Luffys mom, which would explain why she hates the world government, and why kuma sent him there. It also seemed like she was thinking something else when she said "Monkey…?' hmph"
-
Did anyone notice that on page 8 and 12, when Hancock does that face before she is forgiven, little dots appear behind her? Is it an aesthetic effect or is there something more behind it?
-
I suppose that now that the elder lady has a newspaper she will now know about luffy and about the latest happenings. heck, she might go to luffy for help

Pretty sure it's just for effect - it's a normal effect for someone doing that face.

What I can remember:
Nojiko's tattoo
Nami's tattoo
Arlong pirates
The sun tattoo on some fishmen
Various Shandian tattoos
ASCE
Whitebeard symbol
Weird marks on Law's armsNone of these seem very likely

@Zik:
Unless Oda does a twist and is ready to show us the first 2 DF user!
What?? Wouldn't they just explode? Oda would be contradicting himself. That would hardly be a twist.
@Zik:As for Boa her charming ability just seems too convenient.
Not really. If you think about most uses of the Gorgon type characters (IE: Video Games), it is common to have both a charm ability and petrification. Take FFIX for example (first to come to mind), when you enter Gizamaluke's Grotto, there is a snake-like ugly lady that uses both "bewitch" and "petrify" on you. She was a pain. Hated that mini-dungeon.
Edit: The enemy was a "Lamia" – which is based off a different myth -- but doesn't seem to have any other relation to the mythical Lamia outside the look and name. @CodedTech:
So it's likely a passive ability that she might be able to increase, the Mero Mero attack was likely to amplify that power.
Or, given the nature of the series ~~ she is simply giving name to an attack (petrification + love potion) for the readers' sake.
@dirt:Beyond that, does anyone happen to have a good memory of all the tattoos shown before Luffy in One Piece?
The ones that come to mind are Whitebeard's Jolly Roger and Bellamy / Flamingo's. I suppose what people are saying about her not going to war with the Govt makes sense if she had that Jolly Roger on her back, and it would mark her as a traitor. But ~~ this is all wild speculation. Nothing really original either. Though I haven't really seen anyone link it together yet with a decent amount of sensible logic.

Haven't read any of the posts in this thread so … sorry if this has been mentioned before:
Isn't her laugh the same as Blackbeard's? Could that have any significance?

That's some other woman's laughter. But yes, that's slightly unsettling to me.
-
It seems like some variation of the infamous ''naga'' laugh that so many rich/snobby girls in anime do.
-
It isn't the same laugh
Her laugh starts with Za BBs start with Ze
Woman: Zahahaha
BB: Zehahaha -

It is???
I must have miss read it, then: my bad!
-
i think it's the Whitebeard symbol that why she doen'st want to go at war with whitebeard.
-
I don't think there is any "charming ability".
I think she is just way too beautiful, so people just want to do whatever she wants to if she does that cute face and that's all. More of a comic relief… I really don't think it is some kind of special power.
About her back, I think WB's Jolly Roger is very likely as well... but for some reason I think it will be something stupid (just like the mistery of Duval's face).
-
Gee,
OneManga is taking it's sweet-ass time <_< -
What?? Wouldn't they just explode? Oda would be contradicting himself. That would hardly be a twist.
No he wouldn't. The theory of eating 2 Dfs have only been talked upon once in 500+ chaps. My whole theory behind it is the CP9 are just ppl who kill for the WG and are not high enough to get full info on the matter. So what Blueno was told is not the whole truth everything he said is what someone told him(hearsay). He didn't see it first hand so he couldn't possibly know if it is entirely true. That whole scene seemed to suspicious from how they talked about the topic to how the leaded in to it. Seems like perfect misdirection to me or just plain out fooling the reader, it's an easy retcon if he chooses to change his mind so it wouldn't be contradiction if he planned to reveal that way all along.

Ummm this is all assuming I know what you're talking about. I never played any games with gorgon monsters. So like I said her power of charming seems to convienent to just be a natural ability imo. If it is, the amazons are just naive and/or stupid and/or weak willed, etc. A few ppl will overlook Boa's actions because of her beuty is understanable but there seems to be no skeptical ppl on the island outside of Luffy and the former empress Nyon.
Also you're assuming that Oda would base it off what you're talking about and doesn't have a plan for her to have 2 powers(the gorgon curse and a charming DF). That is my rational, that Boa might have 2 powers.

Traditions about nāgas are also very common in all the Buddhist countries of Asia. In many countries, the nāga concept has been merged with local traditions of large and intelligent serpents or dragons. In Tibet, the nāga was equated with the klu (pronounced lu), spirits that dwell in lakes or underground streams and guard treasure. In China, the nāga was equated with the lóng or Chinese dragon.
The Buddhist nāga generally has the form of a large cobra-like snake, usually with a single head but sometimes with many. At least some of the nāgas are capable of using magic powers to transform themselves into a human semblance. In Buddhist painting, the nāga is sometimes portrayed as a human being with a snake or dragon extending over his head. One nāga, in human form, attempted to become a monk; when telling it that such ordination was impossible, the Buddha told it how to ensure that it would be reborn a man, able to become a monk.
took from wikipedia XDand compare this image with the one in this chap where hancock sit on a snake XD

Going to try to remember some tattoos that Luffy may or may not have seen. On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest), I'll rate the chances of the symbol (if it is a symbol) being from that time.
Ten years ago, he knew Shanks and his crew, and while no particular tattoo comes to mind, there's the chance that quite a few of them did have tattoos, and showed them off to him. (7)
In Alvida's crew, I remember a man with tattoos on his face, but it was a distinctly facial tattoo - I can't remember any others. (3)
Then came the time with Morgan, but I don't remember any tattoos, and if there were, it'd have likely been a Marine. (1)
Buggy himself deals with face paint, and I don't remember any particular tattoos from here either, but that doesn't mean none of them do. (3)
No particular tattoos during Kuro's time either that I can recall. But again, it's not what I or anyone else saw, but what Luffy saw. (3)
I think some of the cooks of Baratie had quite a few tattoos, but the one I remember the most is the one on Johnny's face, but it's just a kanji that says ocean. (4)
There's a lot of tattoos in Arlong Park, but they seem to be mostly affiliated with the Fishmen. Otherwise, they're very personal like Nami and Nojiko's tattoos. (5)
Any new tattoos seen in Logue Town are more likely to be of the Marines, but I can't recall any that are distinct or any on Smoker and Tashigi - both of whom Luffy's seen. (2)
I don't think Crocus sported a tattoo. (1)
I don't remember anyone from Whiskey Peak that had any except Mr. 9 and that was a facial tattoo in the shapes of nines - though they could easily be put anywhere on the body. (2)
Little Garden didn't have any tattoos whatsoever if I remember. (1)
The same with Drum Island. (1)
Alabasta had quite a few interesting tattoos, but Pell had facial ones. Ace was first seen here, and sporting a new (to Luffy) tattoo on his back which is obviously Whitebeard's mark. Bon-chan wore horrifying make-up, so he's kind of counted out. I don't think Luffy even saw Mr.1, so he's counted out, and his tattoo was an old version for the kanji, one, anyway. (6.5)
Jaya probably boasted some pirates with tattoos, but none that come to mind. And while Bellamy/Flamingo's mark is first seen there, no one of that crew was sporting such ink. (5)
The Shandian guerillas had quite a few tattoos as well, but they're mostly tribal markings. And Ohm's tattoo doesn't seem to represent any particular group, and I don't think Luffy saw Ohm anyway. (3)
I can't recall any particular tattoos in Foxy's crew, but that doesn't mean no one didn't still have marks from their past crews that were just not seen by us. (2)
Water 7/Enies Lobby has Franky's tattoos, Lucci's tattoo, and probably a lot more from the Franky Family and Marines. Edit: Jyabura also has a tattoo, I think, but when Luffy saw him, he was far away, and Luffy likely wasn't paying attention to him. Also, while I'm sure it's not the first time he's seen the World Government's symbol/flag, it's where I first remember seeing it. (5)
Some of the zombies in Thriller Bark still had tattoos on their bodies if I recall - not just their numbers. (4)
I didn't see the Flying Fish Riders with tattoos, but I could just be plain wrong there. (2)
Saboady (how the hell is that thing spelled? I see it in all sorts of shapes and forms!) carries a lot of pirates and Marines, so there must've been some unusual tattoos out there. Law has quite a few on his arms, and if the other Supernovas had them, I'm sure Kidd didn't, and Luffy didn't see the others. (4)
And those are the arcs up until now. Now unless Luffy saw something on his flight to Amazon Lily, it's either all up there, or something Oda's going to throw in our face and splatter everywhere.
Again, this is if it's a symbol on her back and not the eyes like the women are saying it is.
-
hancock's notice of the word "monkey" could be from knowing dragon or luffy, and luffy saying he's seen "that back before" without getting at all excited or turning to stone proves that they have some kind of a connection and that luffy is somewhat immune to her charm. wouldn't it make sense that only her son would be able to resist her? since (hopefully) luffy wouldn't be attracted to his own mother?
but showing the vice admiral and grandma nyon ability to resist her charm (the old lady only PRETENDED to fall for it) means that it isn't an absolute "power" too.
or maybe hancock was in love with dragon at some point and he left her for another woman (luffy's mom) which has made her hate men forever. that could be very bad for luffy, or make her have a weakness for luffy, being dragon's son.
anyway, it's really the only way i see the story going now. hancock and luffy HAVE to be related in some way.as for what's on her back, that could be ANYTHING. why all this talk of tattoos?
-
….then.... who's vageta? .-.
and nappa?Wrong Jump shonen: you're thinking of King Kai, Genkai is from YYH. (though you could use analogies of Kuma being Toguro Younger)
Somehow I do find it interesting that Hancock supposedly cares about her people yet at the same time just seems to not care about everything they do. The doll scene shows that: those Kuja girls probably worked for a while on it and she destroys it without even a slight "thanks". Somehow I imagine that her encounter with Luffy will at least humble her.
