Chapter 490 "Getting There Again" Discussion
-
-
Where did Luffy get that thing on his arm? and what is it supposed to be?
-
It was a piece of treasure that Nami let Luffy have in the post-TB party with the Rolling Pirates
the fact that it is still there means it might be something
I hope it's just a permanent art upgrade
-
@raj:
Don't be silly.
Monsters don't marry people.
Why am I suddenly imagining "Reptar on Ice"?
Anyway, wondering if we'll see Hatchan possibly this week…or at least the way the SH are going to go down into the island. (since they probably won't cross the Red Line until the end of whatever is coming)
-
WTF-Mate
One Piece apparently has Sea Ents. Bitchin'
-
Sea Ents? (Edit: meaning sea giants?)
what?
are you refering to whatever was in the fog or one of those things they encountered between TB and redline?
-
Is it possible the giant thing is Jimbei? I don't know if he's that big but it might be him.
-
I had always thought of Jimbei as being really fucking huge, but I'm guessing that all kinds of ships were damaged in the Florian Triangle, not just pirates, so the WG would have to order him to stop after a while.
-

I didn't think of that. Must not be him then. I guess we really don't know what's behind there. Could it be Mihawk just riding through on a sea king?
-
Why not?
Mihawk can do anything.
-
Really? Then does Mihawk know why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch? Sorry, I felt compelled to do that. Anyway, I got the idea that it might be Mihawk because of the glowing eyes. He has sharp, hawk-eyes so I figure they might shine through fog like that.
-
Are you guys joking or what? There's not a chance in hell something that big is Jinbei, or even Mihawk riding a sea king. Even Odz would be too small to ride something that big.
-
There's not a chance in hell something that big is Jinbei
You say that like we have some idea as to Jimbei's height. We have no idea what he looks like, aside from "like a gyojin".
-
I'm pretty certain Jimbei can't be that huge, and even if he was, he would be way too big to even attend the Shichibukai meetings. He'd have to sit outside ain the water and wait.
-
They said that the Shichibukai don't have to attend, and rarely do, so it's not like he'd really ever have to be in the meeting place. And there's never been a rule that says how big he can and can't be.
I mean, look at Whitebeard. Humans aren't supposed to be that big.
-
when was it said he was "like a gyojin"?
-
-
eh? did they say that in a SBS or in the manga?
and could you specify where?
-
I doubt something that big would even manage to get itself a pirate crew. I mean, this thing wouldn't even notice guys like Arlong. Unless it has a very big eye or something.
-
…he was the former captain of the Gyojin Pirates.
-
which doesn't confirm anything. It suggests he is a fishman but it doen't prove beyond a doubt.
-

Can you really see Fishmen Supremacists like Arlong following someone who wasn't even a Fishman?
-
Given the flag, the fact that they said to have come from the Gyojin Island, their hatred for humans, it's enough for someone who's not arguing for the sake of argument to connect the dots and figure out that he's a Gyojin.
-
Maybe he's a halfbreed like big pan? A mermaid? Or a human that grew up among fishmen. Or just that strong that he managed to get a fishman following.
ID: "the flag" looks like a sun to me. And we aren't even sure that is Jimbeis flag.
Arlong could have become a supremacist BECAUSE of Jimbei in some odd twist where Jimbei betrayed Arlong.I agree that him beeing a Fishman is the most likely scenario but i don't agree that it is a fact. (looking back I notice you didn't state it was a fact though, you only said "we have no ideawhat he looks like, aside from "like a fishman".")
-
I think Yosaku said flat-out that Jimbei was a fishman, and seeing as how jimbei-zame apparently means 'whale shark', and knowing Arlong's views on how fishmen are the 'Lords of All Creation', I find it silly to think that Jimbei isn't one.
-
Damn. No late monday spoilers. Good thing is tomorrow we probably will get the cover AND the spoilers. This week for some reason I'm dying to see whats going to happen. even more than usual.
-
I have a question to any japanese speaking readers out there. Are all the things that the Strawhats saw while traveling to the Red Line deal with puns?
I know one translator mentioned ame means rain and candy, but are the others puns as well? -
I think the raccoon thing is based off the old Japanese legends that Raccoons transform into things.
Or foxes do. Some kind of furry forest animal turns into stuff.
-
I rarely say this.
There is no way Jimbeh is one of those things.
"But Greg you are always the one who says ideas aren't wrong and you should use your imagination etc. etc."
I know, I know. And there's no way one of them is Jinbeh.
That's not Shichibukai level. That's not Marine HQ Admiral level. That's something else. They're something big, and they're something old. If those flashes really were its eyes (which they could always turn out to be something else) just think about what it's capable of. It could extinguish THRILLER BARK by just walking by it. I mean we don't know if it's a violent life-form, but just by existing and moving it could devastate any surrounding life.
Anyone remember the tale of a 'Giant Kingdom' that Clover almost let out before he was shot?
edit:
Also some food for thought. We know know there are AT LEAST 2 two different tribes of giants and can rationalize there were at least 3 since Saul was bright and Odz….well Odz died running around naked in the ice -_- His recent statements from 49's SBS also suggest that there are plenty more. In thinking about the increasing number of characters with abnormal size, I'm starting to wonder if everyone is descended from those things. Sure, giants (Like Dorey and Brogey) make a great device in fantasy stories, but what if their very existence was linked to the history of the world and they weren't just there 'because'.
Very cool things to ponder.
-
Maybe that monster thing or whatever will help the SH crew to get to Fiahmen island some way.
-
The marines holy island will be a point to find the next porneglyph. Good storytelling.
-
Ok, so we have no clue what the monster is. Maybe we'll find out next chapter? Speaking of which, why the hell isn't there a spoiler for the next chapter yet?
-
Brankie must've not gone to get it =[ Oh well, I don't blame him. I can wait longer if necessary.
-
@dwo:

The Holy Land is the World Government's HQ, not the Marine HQ.
And to the "monster" helping them or something, isn't it too far away to do anything? And it seems like the "monster" is more of something to fit into the backdrop plot of the series, like WB and whatnot.
-

Tanuki. Raccoon Dogs. An animal native to Japan with huge nuts (That's how they're drawn). But foxes have been known to change appearance too to decieve people. In Japanese folklore, the tanuki play their nuts like drums. (Yes, I know, it's really strange)
Anyway, I agree with Greg; that huge thing is definitely not Jimbei. I doubt it's an ancient weapon either. Just like having low tide every year at Longringlongland and then having super high tide at the VERY NEXT ISLAND (Water 7) is left unexplained, it'll be a mystery we may never find out.
-
The Florian Triangle shadow thing is most likely a giant monster Paille.
No seriously… Usopp is talking about it before they arrive at the seastation and see the seatrain for the first time.
And we all know how his lies are really Fortune tellings of the same class as Nostradamus. -

I chuckled a little inside at this statement. I couldn't help it.
-

Usopp said it was around 100m, right? I think TB is larger than 100 meters.

And we all know how his lies are really Fortune tellings of the same class as Nostradamus. Then it would have to be much smaller since Paille is supposed to be "only" 100 meters large.
-
Maybe he only killed a baby? And now the mother is back for revenge? =P
Not everything in his lies need to be 100% correct, do they?
-
Dang… no spoilers... Well, hopefully they will come tomorrow.
-
Now Usopp need only combine his power of prophecy with the power of suggestion his Usopp Spell relies upon to create Usopp's Dire Malediction. Even Jimbei would be powerless against it! [/silliness]
I hope they reach Fishman Island in the next two or three chapters, but with Nami's admission that " we know which way we're supposed to go, but not how to get there." it's beginning to feel like there's going to be a nine-chapter interlude. Ah well, if we get to see Hatchi again I don't mind it.
-

He is another poor person reading the even more poor German translation :(

What I find interesting about the introduction of this "THING," as well as the SBS possible hint/foreshadow is that it's a totally new question mark. We've been discussing possible answers to the trail of question marks left by Oda for a while (eg questions surrounding the Yonkou, ShichiBK, and the WG). But THIS is totally out of the blue.
First of all I don't think the Florian monster is a giant at all, and I'm not accusing you (Greg) of proposing this thought. Even Odz's extraordinary race of giants is small compared to this. Like you said, this monster is on a completely different scale than anything we seen b4. It's probably bigger than any sea king of the calm belt. What the hell is it doing stuck in some desolate area of ocean? Btw would I be out of line to say that this area is pretty close to the Calm belt? For a huuuuuuge mother like that, I think it would be pretty easy to travel to the CB in… say... 5 mins of the breast-stroke.
So, again, why is it stuck in the F-tri? And more importantly, what significance does it have on the overall story. So I really can't link this to any of the cards dealt out by Oda - nothing relating to the WG, Yonkou, ShichiBK equilibrium - but it's sooooo big and powerful that I'm sure it must have some role to play in the story of One Piece, esp regarding what you said about the significance of the history of the OP world.
These are some interesting new questions that ultimately amount to the question, "what the bloody hell are you scheming Oda???"

Dang… no spoilers... Well, hopefully they will come tomorrow.
Spoilers for the next chapter of HxH and Naruto are already out…
-
Spoilers for the next chapter of HxH is already out…
And your point is…? I love Hunter X Hunter... but we're talking about One Piece...
-
Chapter this week?
-
@AWB:
Chapter this week?
There's going to be one, as far as I know.
And Moria, isn't it more fun to be surprised about a new chapter? I know I'd be a lot less emotionally distraught if Brook wasn't forcibly spoiled to me before I read the chapter.
-

The point it is that all of them are on the same magazine. Maybe the spoiler is already on 2ch.

Yeah, there is a chapter.
But nah, I like to be spoiled, since I usually look at them before I go off to school. Then I can actually have something to thing about during school. -_-
